Nice video. Ranger was a bullpen guy who was so lights out he got promoted to a starter in 2021. 22 he became a good 3rd starter and he was amazing in the playoffs. Same with 23. Now we are seeing his playoff form during the regular season and I couldnt be happier

The Lefty Mike Maddux at The moment. Precision on corners mixing speed variation. Time will tell how real it is.

Also he just looks so nonchalant in everything that he does. It’s pretty badass.

I prefer the camera angle for entertainment. You already know the pefty ball is moving all over. Been saying for many years that Ranger Suarez was going to grow into an Ace of given enough opportunities. Literally first time I watched him ot was obvious to me.

One of the things I don’t think you mentioned is how Ranger seems to understand how each pitch sets up the next pitch almost too well. It makes it so mistakes that he makes still have hitters off balance. Of course he will give up more runs later on in the season, or, maybe he won’t. Only time will tell.

Bingo. Yes, things are going his way right now. Statistically he is doing things that hasn't been achieved since the dead ball era, so of course it isn't sustainable, but that art of keeping hitters off balance as you said is why I believe there may be something real to his "ace -like" performance of late. The "mistakes" he got away with in this video were not capitalized on because he mixes his pitches so well. A 92 mph fastball that catches a lot of the plate is harder to hit when there is good movement on the pitch and when speed, location, and pitch selection is constantly switched up with such ease. Ranger may have that "Maddux" factor that allows him to outperform the nastiness of his "stuff." We'll see though. Luckily for the Phillies, he's always been slated as the # 3 on the staff, so any regression would probably be withstood by the team with the presence of pitchers like Wheeler and Nola assuming they perform as expected.

Hey Nick! Kind of an unrelated question but I noticed that Bryce Miller's sweeper has a ton of vertical drop to it (-8.4 ivb!) and it has a more "slurve-y" break to it as a result.
Do you think it could be effectively used as more of an early count pitch to earn strikes and keep batters off his fastball, similarly to how Julio Urias used his curve? Or is Miller's command of it too inconsistent to use it in that way?

Baseball people have known this was a Ceiling Ranger could get to, not 9-0 a 1.36 but..... with his moxey and filth, being a Starting pitcher with a closer mentallity is a special combo that has resulted in your Mad Max's, Cole, Verlander, Smoltzy, Clements and every other SP in Cooperstown. Ranger has the technique in his delivery that prevents injury, its fluid like Wheeler, looks effortless, get used to his name in the Cy young race in the future.

Suarez reminds me of Cliff Lee. Lefty. Not a high velocity thrower but he paints the corners effortlessly. Smooth at fielding his position and almost seems to have no pulse out there while on the mound. His fielding reminds me of Cliff Lee vs. the Yankees in the World Series when he made the nonchalant catch and then the behind the back fielded grounder up the middle..
I know he was profiled as more of a "mid rotation" starter when he first came to the majors, and he doesn't have the "nastiness" of a Verlander or Scherzer-type ace pitcher in terms of his stuff but he has the demeanor, command, and art of deception that reminds me of pitchers like Cliff Lee or Greg Maddux. He understands the art of pitching versus just being a "thrower." It's fun to watch. What he's doing statistically right now hasn't been done since the dead-ball era, so nobody thinks that's sustainable, but I've been watching him long enough as a Phils fan at this point to really start believing that he could be more of an "ace" given the feel for pitching that he has. Pitchers like the aforementioned sustained careers as top of the rotation pitchers despite more mid rotation type stuff pitch wise because they had that innate sense for the art of pitching that Suarez also seems to exhibit.

Ranger has been known for his changeup since he came up. Not a new pitch.

Definitely! It's taken a massive step forward this year, too. You love to see it.
