Yes, in most square dance traditions it's customary to designate 1st couple, 2nd (to the right of the 1st couple), and so on. Some styles of squares also work with "heads" (1st and 3rd couples) and "sides" (2nd and 4th couples).

So you have to "order" yourselves as 1st, 2nd....etc. Is that for every kind of square dance?
