Great disassemble and reassemble instructions especially with the dog spring. They were full of gunk and now they run like brand new. Had to order new drag washers though.
Thank you for making this video. I struggled with the dog spring. I watched that part at least 20 times. Without this video i would still have a pile of parts. Thank you again.

I see when it comes to reels your the man !!! My question is , what rods would you recommend for a penn number 9 reel ? What’s a good overall rod maybe do some pier fishing
Great video and explanations. I found a very dusty peerless 9 in my grandma's attic and am now in the process of rebuilding it. It needed a new drag and I ordered new spool bearings at the same time....overkill?
I always replace the drags on my reels when doing an annual, or longer, service. They are cheap enough for the peace of mind they provide. The bearings are probably overkill, but as long as you fo not know the history of the reel and the condition of the bearings, then a fresh start with replacing them is OK. These parts rarely wear out and a shot of oil during routine service keeps them working - Thanks for asking - Good luck with the rebuild. The #9 is a great reel - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks again! The rebuild went great and the reel feels and operates as new. It was pretty gritty so I tore it all down and degreased in naptha, polished the bakelite with plastic polish and polished the chrome. then put it together with new Penn grease and oil. I love using the vintage gear to put fish in the boat, it seems to be as well built as my Ocean City 922 topsail reel that helped me get a nice Chinook salmon last fall on the Siletz river.
How can you tell when an HT-100 drag is worn out? I changed one recently that didn't seem soft enough...but I should take the reel back apart to see if I missed the spring washer. The carbon fiber drags didn't seem to be worn. I wouldn't use steel wool around assembled/clean parts. 000 steel wool sheds a lot. That flat spring surprised me, I haven't been inside a Peerless 9 yet. That seems odd.
First clue is that the drags don't hold under pressure. There is a dimple grid on the HT-100 washers. If these are worn smooth, then they need to be replaced. The smooth face will cause the drags to slip. These washers are stiff by nature, so having limited flexibility is not necessarily a cause. Penn uses two types of anti-reverse springs. There is the small coil spring and then there is the flat spring shown in this video. The flat spring is found on some older reels like the early Long Beach, Delmar and Beachmasters. - Dennis
Sir, nice tutorial. Was wondering what specifically is the tool/wrench that you use to loosen and tighten the handle nut on with? How do I get one of those? thanks
That is an Alan Tani custom wrench for PENN Reels. You can buy it through mystic parts.com through the link below www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Custom/168-TANI.aspx This wrench handles both the standard screw for this type of reel as well as the larger screw found on the bigger ones. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I have one but the slightly newer black version . It's just called Penn 9m levelwind but still usa made. I use it for catching bait on the boat/ Kayak. Have also used it for soaking bait on a pier but stopped using it after fighting and losing to a big Stingray. The levelwind guide popped out (still does occasionally) the guide channel during the fight and the small handle was a bit uncomfortable. Do you know of any bigger handles that will it and if I can convert it to a non levelwind?
Just buy a different model and keep your 9 for lighter tasks. The price depends on the model you want, but you can find them all over Ebay, Craigslist, Facebook easily.
@@nicholassmerk I have other much more appropriate reels for fishing sport fish. Just would like to upgrade the small 9 to be more comfortable and cast a tad bit better. Pretty fun fighting stingray and sharks on such a light duty reel.
Anotherflores91 I'm wondering if they made a high speed version of the 160. On the other hand, I've been buying Penn 10's for freshwater trolling which are 4:1 ratio. Model 500's must be large in comparison. A narrow 500 sounds interesting.
Most handles for the older Penn reels will fit this. Try one from the Model 155 or the larger one from the Long Beach series. They have the same size gear sleeve. They cannot be converted to non-levelwind, but you can disable the feature. You can remover the line guide and worm and fish this as a conventional reel. Just take the pawl out of the line guide, so that it moves freely, then take the side plate screw out to remove the worm gear shaft. That will give you room to remove the line guide. You could then reinsert the worm gear or leave it out. Your line guide may be popping out because the channel is not aligned properly on the cross post. Try loosening the side plate screws on the top post and rotating it towards the line guide tip until it is firmly in the channel. That may help. - Dennis
I disassembled my Penn Peerless No 9 that I received from my grandpa. He passed away in 1984 and I had used the reel in the ocean when I was a kid. I wasn’t aware, at that time, of proper maintenance and the reel had a lot of corrosion on it. I watched you video and felt good about taking it apart and reassembling the reel with only one hand. Well, the flat spring has disappeared and now I don’t know what to do. Can I order the flat spring somewhere? Also, the bridge didn’t seem to fit back over everything like it was supposed to. What would you charge for me to ship my reel to you for reassembly ?
Hi Matthew. You can order the flat spring from Mysticparts.com. If you would like me to service the reel, please send a note to my email - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com. Thank you for asking - Dennis
Thanks for the video, have a question about the penn peer 9 I just cleaned and lubed. I had to straighten the line guide slightly in order for it to ride and stay in the upper track, working fine but seems to be quite a bit of lateral play to the worm and curious if this is normal.
There should be some lateral play but not a lot. Have you tightened down the screw adjuster on the handle side of the reel? That controls tension on the worm gear and side to side play. Tighten it down completed and then back it off about 1/4 to 1/2 turn to get the ideal free play. Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for the reply. Have tightened it down as far as it goes, looks like it should go another 1/2 turn but won't go. Have backed it out and tightened it several times with no change, Reel seems to be working alright, very smooth, has about 1/8" play with screw adjuster tight.
I would say I am surprised but I have seen a lot of interesting stuff inside reels, so I guess I'm not. I saw one once with the graphite goop used to keep car door locks working. Wha a mess that was to clean! Best wishes in you project! Dennis
The Penn 9 and 109 are for inshore ocean, deep lakes and bays. They handle fish to about 10 pounds. They have a relatively low retrieve rate but are built strong and are very durable. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Hey Dennis...I have the new Penn 9M general purpose reel. Can the drag strength be increased on this reel at all from the default 10lb. to anything higher by manipulating the drag washers or adding one or two more?
There isn't much you can do with this one to increase the max drag. You may try adding another washer and metal, but I am not sure if the inside of the case is deep enough to support the added layer. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Hello Dennis I had another question for u so I was doing some maintenance on my peerless number 9 and I broke off the head on a screw that goes on the line guide grove and I was wondering if u knew the part number on that so I can order one I tighten a little to much and it just broke off.
Alex - here is a link to the schematic with the part numbers. You can order from this site - mystic parts.com which is where I got the schematic. Dennis
I am currently working on this reel but am having a bit of an issue upon reassembly. The gears are set but the spool does not turn upon re-assembly. I am also having a bit of trouble with the line guide - that doesn't turn either upon re-assembly. I've followed your instructions from the video but am still experiencing the issue. Any tips?
You may want to back off the non gear side plate adjuster. Also, make sure that the slot on the pinion gear is facing the spool. Finally, did you take the pawl out of the line guide? If you did, you need to make sure it is seated properly when you reinstall it. The reel will not turn if the pawl is not in the track of the worm gear - Dennis
Dennis! Thank you so much for the reply. I got the reel working. The worm gear wasn't sat correctly but now we're back in action. Thanks again!@@2ndChanceTackle
What size screw driver do I need to use I know that's a flat head but I don't know the size I was thinking about getting a presison screw driver kit thanks
It is unusual and it means that the reel has been repaired before (it should have as they are older, and that the service person used fully threaded screws. It should not be a problem - Dennis
One of the most reliable nd nicest companies to work with is Mysticparts.com. They are an authorized Penn Parts distributor and they do a terrific job in helping us get the parts needed to complete the repairs. Thanks for asking Dennis
Hello! First of all thank you very much for your videos, I wanted to consult you because I got a penn peer 109, similar to the video but with a double handle, and when moving the lever to release the spool it is still hooked with the handle, is it normal? or is there something wrong? thanks!
That is normal. The reel will back turn when the free spool is released. When you return the lever it engages the anti reverse. The Penn 9, which is similar, does not move the handle when in free spool. It is a different set up - Dennis
Mine does not reel in silent, it reels in making ratchet noise, flip the lever and it is free and disengaged from the handle. What do you think is causing this? I will be taking it apart soon but just wondered why this one behaves this way.
You do not have a problem. Some anti-reverse dogs make the clicking sound, some do not. It is usually a matter of whiter there is grease on the gear sleeve or not. The free spool is normal as well from what you are describing. Dennis
No. The ball bearing version is the Penn 10 and it is a completely different set up. You can replace the bearing in the #9 with the originals but you cannot upgrade them - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you for replying. Recently found your channel, and love it. Immediately dubbed! I had another question about Penn Senator size 1/0. It's in your video about the difference between red/black Senators. Thanks again.
There needs to be flex in the gears that mesh the worm drive and the drive gear. The plastic gear gives it that play and actually saves the reel is it gets hung up. If the plastic gear breaks, it eliminates a lot more severe damage that could occur within the reel if the reel was to keep cranking
It all depends on your type of fishing. In saltwater, the Long Beach 60/65 is great for drop fishing. The Senator 3/0 is very versatile. The Jigmaster works best for, well, jigging and shoreline casting. In deeper lakes the Penn 9 with level wind is hard to beat. There are a lot of variations on these basic foundations, but overall, Penn had a durable line up to match most fishing needs. - Dennis
That is a tough question to answer. Is your spool turning? I assume you mean that you are pushing the free spool release lever. If the spool is not turning easily, try backing off the side plate adjuster bearing. If the spool is turning, it should be able to cast. If the bearing does not solve the issue, then something is incorrect in the way you put the gearing back together. Also, Check the work gear and idler gears that drive the line guide and check the pawl to make sure they move freely. - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle had to go back in that little spring pop out on me. Still tight when I crank. But i think backing off those plate screws will help. Thanks for the vidoes man they do help. This is my fourth Penn I have pulled down and put back together. Oh and one Mitchell 600a thats was a pain. Thanks again
Something is binding that shouldn't be. Check to make sure your earred washers are in the grooves inside the main drag. If they are not, then the reel will bind. Also, check to see if the line guide is traveling smoothly or if that is the cause. Take the pawl out of the line guide. The will allow the line guide to go left and right without and resistance. If it is binding, then readjust to top post with the groove to take the pressure off of the line guide.
No. The level wind arm slows down the speed and casting distance. You can use them to drop fish from the pier, but casting is limited. If you like that format, go with the Penn 10. Same size and format, but it has ball bearings and is a much better reel for casting.
Yes I do. Please send me an email to 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will give you the particulars on where to send your reel - Thanks for asking - Dennis
I haven't heard of it, but I guess any oil is better than none. Motor oil has an unpleasant odor. I am not sure I would want to smell that every time I lifted the reel - Dennis
Yes they are. The problem is not where the reel is made. It is with the materials used and the design. Good materials and good design make a good reel. You get junk and poor performance when one or the other is compromised, regardless of where it is made - Dennis
thanks Dennis there is nothing out there worth a darn ....You seem to know your stuff I have a lot of 209m I wish you were here in fresno California I have a reels worm gear not going back and forth real good.......
Davis - A quick guess on this one is that you have a worn or bent pawl. I will try and do the video this week. If it is the pawl, that would need to be replaced - Dennis
Better safe than sorry in that case! There are some springs that make the service interesting, not to mention the line guide set up - Thanks for the note - Dennis

Hi Dennis how are you what size flat head screwdriver do I need to use was thinking about getting a presison screw driver kit thanks
I use a 3/16 flat blade screwdriver for this
Hi Dennis thank you for your time and help 🐟
What size screw driver do I need to use I know that's a flat head but I don't know the size I was thinking about getting a presison screw driver kit thanks
I use a 3/16 flat blade electricians screwdriver for these reels
The 85 reel that i have
It has 4 screws..fully thread....there. Is no partially thread...
Is that normal??
It is unusual and it means that the reel has been repaired before (it should have as they are older, and that the service person used fully threaded screws. It should not be a problem - Dennis
Can I send my Penn #9 to you to service it?
Where do you recommend getting parts (sprockets, etc) from?
One of the most reliable nd nicest companies to work with is Mysticparts.com. They are an authorized Penn Parts distributor and they do a terrific job in helping us get the parts needed to complete the repairs.
Thanks for asking
Dennis
Is it's possible to convert to left hand reel? Just got one and was wondering.
No - it is not possible. Thanks for asking - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks!! excellent your videos
Thank you Daniel - Please stay tuned for more to come - Dennis
Mine does not reel in silent, it reels in making ratchet noise, flip the lever and it is free and disengaged from the handle. What do you think is causing this? I will be taking it apart soon but just wondered why this one behaves this way.
You do not have a problem. Some anti-reverse dogs make the clicking sound, some do not. It is usually a matter of whiter there is grease on the gear sleeve or not.
The free spool is normal as well from what you are describing.
Dennis
Sir do you service reels
Can I put ball bearings in my Penn 9m? Order them from Mystic?
Hi Dennis why do level winds have plastic gears
There needs to be flex in the gears that mesh the worm drive and the drive gear. The plastic gear gives it that play and actually saves the reel is it gets hung up. If the plastic gear breaks, it eliminates a lot more severe damage that could occur within the reel if the reel was to keep cranking
I got Olympic dohzuki 500dg reel. Do Penn reel have same system like mine?
The Penn 350 Leveline fishing reel has a similar torsion bar winding feature. - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle do you have video link that I can refer to?
Here is the one for the Penn 350. It is not identical to your reel ua-cam.com/video/o0iFUJZLxcg/v-deo.html
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks you sir..
I got a old but don't look it Penn monofil 27 do you service those.?
Yes I do. Please send an email yo me - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will provide the details - Dennis
Hi is this reel the same as penn 9m thanks 🐟
Yes it is - The M stands for metal spool - Dennis
What is the best vintage penn reel to use every day....?
It all depends on your type of fishing. In saltwater, the Long Beach 60/65 is great for drop fishing. The Senator 3/0 is very versatile. The Jigmaster works best for, well, jigging and shoreline casting. In deeper lakes the Penn 9 with level wind is hard to beat. There are a lot of variations on these basic foundations, but overall, Penn had a durable line up to match most fishing needs. - Dennis
Bill just did the penn 9 but when I push the casting line up it will not cast what did I do wrong
I just got one from my grandfather and wanna go fishing on Lake Erie do you/ anyone know how much drag this reel has?
I think I has around 10 pounds of drag.
Penn 9#s and 109#s have 10 pounds of drag while 209s and 309s have 15 pounds of drag.
Are these reels good for casting off piers?
No. The level wind arm slows down the speed and casting distance. You can use them to drop fish from the pier, but casting is limited. If you like that format, go with the Penn 10. Same size and format, but it has ball bearings and is a much better reel for casting.
@@2ndChanceTackleWhat is a good , small conventional reel that i can cast easily from a pier with a 7,6 rod? Would the penn 10 work?
Do you repair reels I have one like this that needs a little TLC. An if so do you have a contact
Yes I do. Please send me an email to 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will give you the particulars on where to send your reel - Thanks for asking - Dennis
What about motor oil on a fishing reel I know someone who does this he has his reels about 40 years
I haven't heard of it, but I guess any oil is better than none. Motor oil has an unpleasant odor. I am not sure I would want to smell that every time I lifted the reel - Dennis
Hi are the china made reels any good thanks 😊
Yes they are. The problem is not where the reel is made. It is with the materials used and the design. Good materials and good design make a good reel. You get junk and poor performance when one or the other is compromised, regardless of where it is made - Dennis
That dog spring saved me the schematics dont show that !!
There are things that a picture cannot show in the install. Thanks for watching - Dennis
Hi can you give us a video with a basic lub and outside cleaning of a 209m without pulling It apart please...........
Sure thing - I will add it to my list of requests. Thanks for asking - Dennis
thanks Dennis there is nothing out there worth a darn ....You seem to know your stuff I have a lot of 209m I wish you were here in fresno California I have a reels worm gear not going back and forth real good.......
Davis - A quick guess on this one is that you have a worn or bent pawl. I will try and do the video this week. If it is the pawl, that would need to be replaced - Dennis
Thanks Dennis
You just scared the Hell out of me, I am mechanically inclined~~~but I don't know~~~
Better safe than sorry in that case! There are some springs that make the service interesting, not to mention the line guide set up - Thanks for the note - Dennis
Seams like your in a hurry
Hmmmm - Sometimes I work fast - Thank you
