When testing the broken MOSFET I managed to format the SD Card on my camera before saving the video. Fool. I didn't realise until much later so at 2:15 I reconstructed the null reading after the repair for completeness. - Наука та технологія
I got a Lynx for Christmas in 1991 when I was 10 years old... to this day it's still my favorite handheld system, especially Todd's Adventures in Slime World, which at the time was the greatest game since Metroid... This makes me want to see if my old Lynx is packed away somewhere in my parents attic and see if I can get it working again... this has been a fantastic bit of nostalgia, and I'm happy to subscribe to see all your future videos!
The #1 reason I like your channel is that you're treating these machines gently. I really can't stand some tear downs I've seen of old machines from other people, where they literally just destroy them only to show what's inside!
Watching electronics rise from the dead is oddly satisfying
I have been known to quote Altered Beasts "rise from your gwwwave" while plugging in repaired kit in the hope the retro gods are with me.
agreed
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Enzo Alijah instablaster ;)
It's such a beautiful thing to see old technology be given a second chance at life. Great job bringing the Lynx back to life!
It sure is, thank you for watching I'm glad you enjoyed it
After a long day at work there's nowhere more relaxing than the cave. Lovely.
I had an Atari Lynx back when they first came out. I had several games and a carrying case for it but the darn thing got stolen. I've missed it ever since. :)
Great video! thanks for sharing. It makes me want to get another one.
Really like the video with all the details, how-to's and recap music ofcourse. Nicely done.
My favorite retro tech videos on yt.
Keep up the great job!
Cheers, always great to see you in the comments
Another fantastic watch Sir! I remember my brother having a Mk1 Atari Lynx. Man they were huge!
This really makes me want to get my lynx out of storage and repair it. Last time I used it, I was getting a white screen of death.
Not sure if it was the music or seeing the lynx come back to life, but I felt a bit emotional at the end!
I just bought one of these with a pile of games,, and I absolutely love it!!! It is a simply amazing handheld.... with by far one of the best versions of paper boy on the planet.... I wanted one in the nineties,, but for some reason I never got one,, but to finally have one now... I couldn’t be happier!!! If you love old arcade games... buy one...
Your YT videos are the best...thank you!
I am relatively new to the Atari Lynx scene. I barely remember it coming out in 1989, and I didn't even touch one until less than a year ago when I bought a Lynx II on eBay. Now I have all of the accessories and I'm up to (I still can't believe it) 34 games, all with manuals and all except three of them with boxes. Now is the best time to get into collecting for this fun system, as even CIB Lynx games (if not the consoles themselves) can still be had for a relatively cheap price, at least on this side of the pond. I'm saving up for the McWill LCD screen which you referenced in the video; it's cheaper for you in Europe because McWill lives in Germany. I will be out-of-pocket almost US$150 after shipping. But I understand that the upgrade is absolutely worth it.
Thanks again for your spot-on videos. They're always interesting and instructive, and I never miss them!
Mark Little Sounds like you have a great collection, I agree it's a brilliant time to collect for the system and I'm glad to hear it's getting the appreciation it deserves.
Oh man this part evokes childhood memories. I had the Lynx 2 with Blue Lightning and Roadblaster at the time. I had to tear myself away. Thank you.
Keep up the great work - you're slowly giving me inspiration to try again in getting my PS/2 70 portable back to life :)
That Lynx is jacked up! You DO know jack. What a transform-ation! CAPtivating, even.
+Christopher Born Good lord stop this punny man
Great Video. It’s a pleasure to watch!
So glad i found your channel last month, excellent series 👍
Great job, wonderfully put together =D
love it when I see old tech get restored and given another life
Still have mine, bought new back in the day. It really was an extremely impressive system compared to what was available at the time. Thank you for making this video; a joy to watch.
Love seeing systems brought back from the dead. Amazing work!!!!
This is one of my favourite channels right now. Great content.
Great to hear Chris glad you're enjoying it!
Your videos are so relaxing
👍👌👏
Love your stuff, just subbed recently and already watched most of your old videos! Keep it up!
+Wanace oh lord don't go too far back. I'd lile to think they have come a long way since I started out, and we have plenty more way to go. Thanks for watching
These restoration videos are soooo satisfying.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoy it. Here have a secret teaser to an upcoming restoration ua-cam.com/video/jqV_Mn8dOrY/v-deo.html
Great restoration video, the Lynx was an awesome machine when it came out. I still i have mine i bought from Dixons, apart from a few marks on the case it's still rocking just fine! Looking forward to seeing the screen upgrade, i'd probably play mine more if i changed it so it will be interesting to see.
Absolutely love these restorations! Can’t wait to see a modern LCD on it!
Thanks for the video, fantastic work! Ive got a Lynx I and II in the wardrobe, breaking it out tonight for some Hard Drivin, California games and Cyberball!
+PRiSM Visual Production awesome. Was Harddrivin comlynx compatible? That would be fun
Slime World, a personal favourite of mine. If you like puzzle-type games, I highly recommend Chip's Challenge.
+MarkTheMorose Chips Challenge is one I have fond memories of and I must find a game card for it. Shadow of the beast was a little disappointing but I think a lot of that is down to the screen struggling with small fast moving sprites. I'd also like to try RoadBlasters.
Hey CaveMan (the temptation to put Captain before, and shout both words is so strong!) Interesting as always. Well done for putting life back into old bits of kit.
Cheers Phil. I should get a club to carry around.
RetroManCave cavey wavey
Well done Mr Cave...excellent restoration...
Fantastic job on the restoration. Bringing the old handheld back to life. Would love to see the new screen upgrade. Just to see, how it compares to the original.
therapeutic to watch you revive the old Lynx
The graphics quality of the games are a lot more impressive than I would've expected! The animations look fairly smooth and well made.
Thank you for the amazing content Mr Caveman. You've inspired me to dig out my old lynx's from storage to test if they still work! I've also got a ton of games around here somewhere.....
+Adam Mann Great! Have fun and I hope you didn't leave the batteries in it!
@@RMCRetro I finally got around to digging the Lynx's out and they both still work just fine. I'm in the process of collecting all 76 official titles, i'm not missing many now! How's your Lynx gaming collection?
Love the detail shots and care you took documenting this. Really feel like I don't need to do it myself now. :D
(Though if I see one for super cheap I still might fix one.)
Great job! Your videos are simple enough, that evan I can fix it know!
Sweet! I might be able to fix my broken Lynx now!
Keep it up, superb job done!!
This is so awesome. Love your videos.
Cheers Erv. Urban Exploring? That gets my sub every time.
This is reallly amazing.... Loved it
Amazing video as usual!
Got a few games at a yardsale last year. Just got one that was for parts and plan on doing the fix as you showed when it arrives. The McWIll screen mod looks amazing, but yeah for $110 us dollars I'll have to wait. Thanks for the video.
Another great video. Really hope you'll do the screen upgrade!
Snowmation I did :D you'll find it on my channel
Oh cool. :D
A chain of Lynx ... a chain of links ... brilliant.
Had a Lynx as a child. Absolutely loved it. It seemed like any time we traveled we'd stumble upon a store selling Lynx games. Still have my collection Lynx games sitting in my old Lynx kit case. I have a brand new model 1 and 2 in my closet. I'd like to find another model 2 in good condition eventually to do the McWill mod to. I just don't have the heart to do it to my brand new ones as I feel they should stay original.
I can understand that, it's nice to keep it original if you have one in perfect shape. It's nice to mod another if you want to play it :D
Nice job ,Well done 👌
A friend had one when they first came out and it was incredible at the time. I might have to see if I can find one for myself.
Another Superb Video. 🙏👏 Looking forward to seeing this New screen Fitted, may even look T replacing my original screen?! . Cheers
I got one when someone was selling off old stock as clearance, back in the late 90s. The games I can remember enjoying were APB and Gauntlet. I also got Robotron 2084 (twin stick shooter without two sticks wasn't great), and Gates Of Zendocon (Scramble-ish side scroller). Because it was all new, I also have a few of the nice little pin badges that Atari packed with the games :-) Really nice handheld, and certainly the only one I ever wanted to own...
So pleasing!
Glad you enjoyed it
This channel is so chill :) Great for watching on the sofa with me feet up, a cuppa, digestive biscuit or a Hob-Nob if I'm feeling in one of my daring moods!! I know what your saying, damn this guy is one crazy son of a beep RIGHT?!
What If? I bet you take your digestive to full tea saturation and the brink of breakage before lifting it out just in time. Life on the edge. Glad you enjoy it there are plenty of action packed channels out there, this is a place to chill out among friends :)
You know I do, but that's just the way I roll sometimes.
Fine video Mr Cave, camera work - check, top quality content - Check.
The Lynx was way ahead of it's time. Such a shame.
I bought a broken lynx, with near scratchfree case. First thing I do, I take it apart, and put back together. Now there's a hole on the case. Good news, while the unit was sold as broken, "fried", as was scratched under a battery compartment, only issue seemed to be, that the batteries weren't getting a proper connection. Some rechargeables tend to have flatter + sides. A bit of solder blob fixed that.
It's so easily done! Still, at least you got a working Lynx, put an Atari sticker over the hole :D
I remember those from years ago. Late '80s? Great little things.
+Declan McArdle 1989, same year as the Gameboy in the US
this is great, but what we *really* want is the final episode of the Game Gear to Raspberry Pi series!!! We've been waiting for so long...
I have just bought my Atari Lynx 2. Now waiting for it to be delivered. Can't wait! :D
That's awesome, I will keep searching for a broken Lynx 2 and insert a Pie3 with a Lynx emulator.
I am not sure the Pi3 will fit the Lynx 2 case though! :-o
What about a Pi Zero?
I have a Lynx 2 that's been used for maybe 3 hours in total.. I should probably dig it out sometime.
Man, I have two dead Sega Game Gears, and this video is making me want to get at least one of them back to life.
that right there is some lucky pocket, great video :D
oh yeah it fits like a glove, I don't get any strange looks walking down the high street with my Lynx in my pocket, honest!
I’m searching for my Atari Lynx. BRB!
New video! YAY!
Beautiful. Can't wait to see it running on a new screen. GadgetUK164 does a brilliant-looking homebrew of the old C64/Spectrum Alien game for the Lynx.
Fantastic vid! Especially liked the 'Blob, blob, blob' sound effects :))
When it comes to the screen, won't fitting a modern LCD panel make the games look quite different to how they were intended to look though? Just as 16bit games were designed with 240p CRT scanlines in mind when displaying the final output, how will Lynx games look without that old style LCD 'matrix' pattern. We all know how bad 16bit consoles can look on modern HD displays, after all.
Second only to Perifractic's heehooheehoo screwdriving sound ;)
Great video as always. It reminds me I really need to get my Game Gear recapped. I've had the caps for a couple of years and just haven't pulled out the soldering iron to get it done yet. Sad thing is I've recapped several arcade monitors in the time since I've had the kit too, I keep forgetting about it.
In a reversal I have been putting off recapping my Amiga monitor while working on this, I really need to get it sorted
Now watch eBay worldwide get emptied of Lynxes. As always, a fantastic video. And I'm very much looking forward to the screen upgrade.
Haha I don't think I really have that kind of influence!
Great video, I repaired an original Gameboy earlier this year. The thing I am wondering is could you list links for your repair tools kit and the circuit board holder, that is really handy. As I repair a quite a few electronics now and then but always need 3 hands to repair anything. I don't have those sort of tools and it always takes quite a while to fix something due to the soldering being so delicate to remove components. What sort of tip and your soldering iron are you using to repair microelectronics without damaging the board?
fantastic video, Lynx nerds of the world thank you - If and when you do the screen will look out for that one. Oh and I'd totally pay a hundred euros just to play lynx California games, the best version by far!
Great save 😁👏😁👍
+therushden thank you, always good to see you in the cave
Shadow of the Beast! My brother had a Lynx and he had that game as well. It was a toughie. I remember that I tried to fix his broken AC adapter socket by wiring the wall wart directly into the battery leads and the screen exploded. I felt really bad (and dumb) about that one.
Great stuff! On the subject of replacement screens, I have both an original Lynx 1 and a Lynx 2 on which I performed the McWill screen mod. I have to say, if possible try to hold on to an unmodded system as well. Although the replacement screen does look fantastic, the system loses a fair bit of its charm. The original screen is quite capable of hiding the Lynx's low resolution, and the slow LCD's also hides the jerky scrolling that some games display.
+custardo agreed, my primary goal is always to get a system back to working original order. A secondary system for the mods would be a nice comparison
Good job restoring it, but what you could do with the other lynx is, 1 philling in those gap holes with liguid plastic and 3D print the missing battery cover sothat you also can complete refurbish the other atari lynx.
It's a great timeless system.
Nice ideas, I would like to use the 2nd one for upgrades and mods so I keep one original. I would have so many uses for a 3D printer!
And another one saved 👍🏻
I was really hoping you'd do the McWill screen mod to it. I'm glad you're enjoying your Lynx though!
+Firedcylinder Part 3 my man. It will take a while but it will happen. I wanted to draw a line under getting it back to original state. Next step is mods and modern add ons.
Slap bass aside - excellent - just fascinating.
This series is "As good as James!"
Wow nice job! I need to repair my walkman. I suspect bad caps causing the wow flutter.
+Synthusiast check out @msmadlemon she does great walkmam repair videos
Gonna check it out, thnx!
I think there's an LED backlight kit available for it that might be a nice interim upgrade rather than replacing the screen with the modern expensive one. nice vid as always!
Hey Martin! LED replacement is possible, that would save battery life but the back light isn't really the problem behind the screen quality. I'll look into it, maybe I can present both options
Yeah, if you get the other one working, you could always do it in that one and save the mcwill screen for this one.
I know handheld legends sell the backlight kits on this side of the pond. dunno about the uk though.
Nice video didn't know Atari has a handheld console the lcd and florsnt lamp remind me of Sega gamgear
I know what you mean about unloved game systems, My lynx II is in nearly mint condition because I just didn’t have enough games to play on it.
John Sch it's never too late :D
Good stuff. Great to see it back working again. Done the screen upgrade to my Game Gear. GadgetUK164 has a great video on the mod.
Finally part two. Arnt you planning to replace the lcd with mcwill?
We talk about it at the end of the video. There will be a part 3 when I can afford the McWill. It's nice to get to a place where we've restored it to its original state, and we can look at upgrading it next. Hopefully I can get the 2nd one working so I can show a comparison of the two.
Another super video, thank you :) could you tell me the name or where to get that snappy circuit board holder with the rotation! excellent stuff. Thanks
+RoboKiteCat72 that was on Amazon. A PCB holder or "helping hands"
My original Lynx still works. Mainly because I didn't store it in a rusty toolbox at the bottom of a sceptic tank.
Hope you get away with putting your misseseses toothbrush back without her noticing the weird taste to it. 👍
Do you have any idea where to get a volume wheel for this console ? Or at least know of a modern equivalent that would do the job
i still have mine but it doesnt work with batteries i need to find an adaptor for it and see if its just the battery connection or a general problem :/ i wonder if i can buy some parts i miss :/ like the battery cover and well the screen protection :/ both of those had come off and i no longer have them.
Always loved the Lynx. Never understood at the time why the 4 shades of grey Gameboy totally blasted it away considering the hardware in the Lynx - it is more similar to the modern handhelds from Sony and Nintendo. Atari always brought things out too early. Jaguar was an N64 3 years early. No prizes for being too early it seems!
cool another atari saved
A Lynx 2 would be fun for you to restore too. Maye even add that fancy better screens Lynx 2 version onto it as part of a restoration and then compare what a Lynx 1 Vs Lynx 2 looks like with the same better built screen on both as if Lynx 2 looks better it would mean it has better graphics chip revisions inside of it and same for the Lynx 1 but Lynx 2 has the better sound as it's stereo probably even if not a better picture on the same screen type.
A Lynx 2 Restoration is definitely a handheld to restore in the cave for a compare of the chipsets on the same modern screen. Are new chip revisions in later anything really el cheapo or are they better for cheaper to put in. The answer would be in the Lynx 2 if you cover it one day.
Montage!!!!
Great job on the restoration! I was wondering what the tool is you use to hold the PCB?
offperception thats a pcb holder, sometimes known as "helping hands", mine were on Amazon
Thank you! Now it's easier to find. :) Owning a Lynx 1 and 2, this is a very useful video. Looking forward to that future screen mod!
Nice work! Are there any common faults with the Lynx II?
+dave4shmups I haven't looked too much into the 2 yet other than improvements such as the screen and stereo headphone jack. It has the same problem with the MOSFET which is in Q12 on the 2, as well as common faults with sound volume caused by old caps, but I can't be more specific. If interest in the Lynx continues I'm tempted to get one to show in part 3 to progress the story from old to new mods, showing how Atari tried to improve it along the way
Oh my word, I think you've voided the warranty!
Have you looked into getting a better soldering iron tip? A chisel tip would make work like that a lot easier. I have a soldering station like the one you have, I could send a link to some tips. The conical tip you're using has very low thermal mass, and makes it a lot harder to solder. I was under the same misconception that soldering was just semi difficult, but changing tips made the world of difference. For a couple of £'s it'll make everything so much easier.
I have indeed having spent some time with a friend who has a strong background in these things and a set of tips are on the way, I'm looking forward to seeing the difference it makes.
Good to hear.
Awesome quality video as ever!
Question: Is the any chance of replacing the LCD with a RaspberryPi 3.5 LCD screen? as they are under £10 on ebay etc.
MeesterDash thanks. No that won't work, but if you check my videos we go on to replace the screen with a new one
I just found this video from 2013... I guess he didnt get it fitted into his handheld tho. ua-cam.com/video/2xwM0Fwnz24/v-deo.html
great video :) next, new screen and some form of micro sd drive?
AdiSneakerFreak and perhaps an extended or updated battery back, that would make an awesome lynx
hopefully mate will definitely watch, pretty new sub and loving the content :)
I've been trying to get an old lynx 2 i was given going again and after watching this I decided to just replace the transistor regardless but atm it's still not going. BUT I'm a bit of a novice and part of me thinks I held a hot iron too close to the new one for too long and just broke it as well. I have a multi meter and if I put one side on pin 1 of the dc power (im using a plug not batteries) and the other on the source or gate of the transistor it reads around 11 volts. Putting the other on the drain however gets 0.34v and if hold the power button it goes up to 0.44v until I let go. BUT, if I put one side of the multimeter on the source directly and the other on the drain it reads 11volt pass through when plugged into the wall regardless of what I do with the buttons.. is that normal? Any advice?
