    Our Billie throws all bucks, too. We’ve introduced a new Billie to our flock. So far, he hasn’t had a chance to cover any does, as the older buck is the herd sire and the does love him.

    I was told by a couple people that if you let your buck cover your doe just the first encounter you should have a doe, I tried it with my neighbors buck who throws nothing but bucks if he stays with the girls for the whole time. I got out of 9 babies 3 were bucks and those were bred multiple times, the ones with the does were all bred once. Hope you have a great day.

      That's very interesting. I believe we let him run with these does for a month, so it's very possible that played a factor. We normally just catch the heat and hand breed, but this time we didn't.

    • @devenlamar3900

      Yep higher does, I have seen it work. You have to catch your doe on the first day of heat and within the first 10 hours of the first day. I've let him mount 3 times then done. And had great success all but the buck I paid the most for lol

    8 bucks, 1 doe?! You should sit down and read him the goat slow cooker book. XD That is crazy, he'd definitely be getting sold if he was here. I had a friend who had a buck who NEVER threw a doe until they year they decided to sell him. I think they got one or two. But they used him for 3 years, and every other kid was a buck. Wild.

    ... 4 in 1000.... Could we have a Perusal of the Workings Out 😂😂😂😂

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm  2 місяці тому

      Sure! I'm no math expert and could be wrong. But I took 50/50 odds (the probability of each kid to be a buck or doe), and multiplied them to the power of 8 (the number of the first 8 births). That gives a result of 0.003906, which, when converted to a percentage is 0.39%. This would be "less than 4 in a thousand" odds that we could get 8 in a row that are the same gender. I'm happy to be corrected if I misunderstand probabilities and/or how to calculate them.

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm  2 місяці тому

      So I ASSUME the odds of getting a buck or doe are 50%. But with the next "generation", the odds of them being the same sex drops by half, to 25%. Each successive kidding adds to the next, and you are cutting the chances in half of the string continuing. So it works out like this: 1st: 50%, 2nd: 25%, 3rd: 12.5%, 4th: 6.25%, 5th: 3.125%, 6th: 1.5625%, 7th: 0.78125%, and finally 8th: 0.390625%. The odds of every kid being either gender is 50/50, but the chances of the string continuing with the same gender cuts in half with every iteration.

      @@plumbushfarm fascinating how nature works things out. I am guessing that in the wild, one buck has several does, but if there is a “sneak” breeding by another buck, there is a higher chance of getting a buck so they can mix up the genetics going forward. Thereby - more breeding = more bucks.

    What are goats used for other than clearing underbrush?

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm  3 місяці тому

      Our goats are used primarily for milk production. We drink their milk and make cheese and butter from it. They are a perfect animal for a small homestead because as you mentioned they are great at clearing underbrush and weeds, but can still provide milk for a family. Cows on the other hand, require much more space and feed.

  • @araunapalm

    Just investigate: it is the acidity of the doe that determines the sex of the baby - not the buck. .... as far as I know..

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm  3 місяці тому

      Now you sent me down a bunny trail. It looks like there is some research that indicates the ph level of the female can produce a more favorable environment for male vs female sperm. Of course the sex of the kid would still be determined by the sperm from the buck. Thanks for pointing out another factor that could influence gender!

    *IF you're "breeding for meat" **_OR_** "breeding for pets," **_THEN_** you're doing well. **_HOWEVER,_** if you're aiming to increase your herd numbers, you'll be **_NOT_** so happy with all those "hairy-legged, boy-o" offspring! (You've also **_MAJORLY_** "NAILED IT" for CUTENESS!)* 👍😊
    *Liked the suggestions regarding time-limiting breeding access, even though the results DO sound "anecdotal" rather than "scientific." Have you queried your vet at all? They **_SHOULD_** be an excellent source of Scientific knowledge, as opposed to anecdotes.*
    *THANK. YOU SO **_VERY,_** VERY MUCH FOR USING CORRECT ENGLISH! **_WHEN_** I was **_SO_** PLEASANTLY SURPRISED to read (in your "Description" section), that there were "...FEWER than..."
