FALL RUT HAS BEGUN - Breeding goats for Spring kids
It's that time of year - breeding season has begun. We like to plan for the majority of kiddings in February, March, and April, but to do that we have to control when the does get bred. Therefore, we only breed our does at the times we choose so we can have them kid on the best schedule for our farm.

      I assume you intend this as an inflammatory remark, but I'll reply anyway. We are Christians, who are a part of the Mennonite culture and community. While the word culture does START with the same letters as the word cult, we don't actually fit the definition of a cult very well at all.

    I have a DeLaval bucket milker for goats, I hated it and set up an old surge milker. the bucket weighs a ton, so I built a milker like yours. I love it, so much that I milk my cow with it as well. The only difference between the cow and the goats is the jar size. This is by far easier than either of the other machines to use and to clean. Great video.

    ... 4 in 1000.... Could we have a Perusal of the Workings Out 😂😂😂😂

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm 2 місяці тому

      Sure! I'm no math expert and could be wrong. But I took 50/50 odds (the probability of each kid to be a buck or doe), and multiplied them to the power of 8 (the number of the first 8 births). That gives a result of 0.003906, which, when converted to a percentage is 0.39%. This would be "less than 4 in a thousand" odds that we could get 8 in a row that are the same gender. I'm happy to be corrected if I misunderstand probabilities and/or how to calculate them.

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm 2 місяці тому

      So I ASSUME the odds of getting a buck or doe are 50%. But with the next "generation", the odds of them being the same sex drops by half, to 25%. Each successive kidding adds to the next, and you are cutting the chances in half of the string continuing. So it works out like this: 1st: 50%, 2nd: 25%, 3rd: 12.5%, 4th: 6.25%, 5th: 3.125%, 6th: 1.5625%, 7th: 0.78125%, and finally 8th: 0.390625%. The odds of every kid being either gender is 50/50, but the chances of the string continuing with the same gender cuts in half with every iteration.

    I thought this was super interesting while i know absolutely nothing about goats. I do own a horse and i know about horse conformation so a lot of this made sense. In sport horse breeding i see a reduction of the gene pool because everyone wants to breed to the popular stallions. This is very worrisome and i hope the goat world is working hard to preserve diversity.

    • @plumbushfarm
      @plumbushfarm 2 місяці тому

      That is very interesting! Nigerian Dwarf Goats are reproductively mature at six months or less, and with a five month gestation and normal multiples of babies, it's quite common to need a new buck every few years just because everyone gets related so quickly. The good thing is that with those generations happening so fast, there are always new desirable genetics available, or so it seems. As we say in the video, right now is a great time to get great genetics at a fantastic price and introduce them to your herd.
