The spoonplug is meant to be fished near the bottomb, bumping it on occasion. They use double hooks to eliminate the binding problem, at least on the ones I have. The method intended for their use is trolling along structure, the larger the lure the deeper it goes. Once fish are located they can be cast. Very interesting and thorough attempt at reverse engineering them. Well done.
@ huttonvista dav Thanks a lot for chiming in , though I already knew about all these features . By making these spoonplugs , I just wanted to try out something , that was entirely new to me , as this is what most of my luremaking used to be about(I do not make lures anymore these days for personal reasons) . I've found out , that these spoonplugs perform quite poor on the cast , as they offer a lot of air resistance , and I haven't had a chance for boatfishing during the past years . Nevertheless I had already caught a few perch on my smaller versions of the spoonplug by now , but honestly speaking , I prefer casting different types of lures for their better casting performance . But still I tie on these spoonplugs now and then . Haven't lost one yet , either , since I've found , that when the tip of their diving lip hits an underwater obstacle , the spoonplug would turn on it's back , causing it to rise up away the obstacle immediately , also the hooks would turn away from the obstacle . After one or two feet of further rerieve the lure would then turn over and fall back into normal swimming position again , ....a brief pause of the retrieve after hitting the obstacle would enhance this feature . tight lines from northern Germany , Dieter
Just discovered your videos and have to say I’ve really been missing out. I enjoy your commentary as much as your lures. You have given me tremendous enthusiasm in trying to make my own lures. During past years I was just too occupied with having to take care of senior family members suffering of dementia and I still am , ....also the present political and social situation in my homeland kinda mentally disabled me to carry on with business as usual . Sorry to hear Dieter. I had to take care of my dad when he got cancer. I stayed away from fishing for a few years after he lost his battle. I just started back last year and have found my passion for the outdoors again. It’s not about getting knocked down but standing back up no matter how difficult it is. I was visiting a fellow lure maker not too long ago and he had made a prototype of a similar metal spoonplug. He was showing it off in a lure testing tank and oh boy it swam so beautifully. it was very reminiscent of the design you use here but if i remember correctly the body it self was curved slightly like a banana. sorry to hear about the health problems in your family, i know stuff like that effects on ones motivation to make videos but its great to see you making some now :)
+SolarBaits Thanks a lot , Mikko , ....I had such lure on my mind for years , but found a round banana shape like f. e, the "Russellure" or the old DAM bananaspoon to be too difficult to duplicate just by handwork, .......I had considered to do something like cutting the top off a piece of curved stainless steel or brass tubing , but this would have been quite a pain in the butt , I guess ? Thanks for your compassion, the past years haven't been that easy for us , and the constant nerve wecking obviously also affected my own health . Got problems about my blood pressure now , back in mid-January I had to be taken to the emergency room with an ambulance , a vein deep in my right nostril bursted open during my sleep by 5.30 in the morning . I was thinking , that I would bleed to death , they've really had a tough time to stop the bleeding , lost about estimated 1,5 litres of blood just through the nose , before they were able block up the hole , it simply would not stop as every few minutes I had to spit out a peach-sized clump of half coagulated blood looking like chicken liver not to choke on my own blood . But now I'm looking forward to a new fishing season again , ......greetz , Dieter

I intend to try to make some spoonplugs of my own using your methods and templates as they have a reputation of being very precise in terms of depth control and very stable in terms of speed control. Hi , Nick , Thank you very much , this really makes my day . Sadly I have lost my enthusiasm and passion for lure making , thus also making videos about it , either . Me and wife had to take care of senior family members suffering of dementia during the past years , which obviously took it's share of our mental welfare , too . By now my aunt and my father have passed away at 89 and 86 years of age , but still I'm unable to get back to my usual ways . This is also and mainly due to the present political situation in my fatherland Germany ! I simply can't go back to business as usual , while our beds are burning and our nation is intended to be brought to it's knees by the globalist agenda flooding us with islamic migrants and autodestructive green ideologies . Nevertheless , I'm still going fishing frequently , as the outdoors is seemingly still the only bit of my homecountry , that has not changed drastically and still looks like it ever did and that I still feel like at home in . I do not think , that I will ever make any new videos , but nevertheless I'm always trying to answer any upcoming questions regarding the contents of these older clips . Never meant to get political , as this is strictly a fishing-, and lure-related channel , but this is the only and true reply , that I can give to you . Thanks for sharing. Could you let me know what was the heaviest material that you could get to work effectively. I am looking to create some of B Perry's plugs this winter in hopes of triggering some deep water bass next year.
I would not go thicker than 1,5 millimetres sheet thickness , but this also depends on the general size of the lures . Bear in mind , that the thicker the sheet material , the heavier it would get , thus the more mass would have to be moved to put the lure into it's swimming action . If you have two lures of same size but of different sheet thicknesses , the lighter lure of thinner sheet would always move a bit livelier . I would use 1,5mm sheet thickness only for the large 13 cms lures , maybe also for 10 cms , but not smaller ones , for these 1,0 mm sheet thickness would still be OK , ...the genuine Buck Perry Spoonplugs of different sizes all have the same sheet thickness of about 0,5mm . These lures are originally intended for trolling , so weight does not really matter , as they have a built-in tendency not to rise to the surface too much . I've found , that even heavier sheet lures do not have te best casting performance due to their anti-aerodynamic shape , ........they'd only cast little more than half as far compared to an ordinary spoon of same weight , and lures of only 0,5mm sheet are really , really poor on the cast . But on retrieve they yet seem to be quite snag-resistant , since any time the pointed diving bill hits a bottom obstacle , the spoonplug would flip over instanly to rise up a bit and same time turning the hooks upward clear of the obstacle , ......after a short distance of further retrieve it would then fall back into swimming position to continue to wiggle along . Use stainless steel of 0,5mm for very small trolling lures(brass sheet only in 1,0mm thickness or thicker , 0,5mm brass warps easily ) , .......1,0mm and 1,5mm thickness brass and stainless steel for medium sized and larger lures , ...copper sheet is not that well suited , as it is is quite soft and warps easily . @@61diemai Hello Dieter! Since you quit your lure building i dare to ask you this question. I have seen some drawings you made of your different lure models is there any chance to get hold of more?
Spoonplugs should run nose down and tail up and track in a straight line, if that helps you any. When properly balanced a spoonplug that is fouled with a small amount of weeds should flip over, belly up, and come to the water surface where you can jerk the rod and flip the weeds off the lure then the lure will flip right side up again and dive back to the bottom without reeling in your line, while trolling. If it's fouled with to much weeds it won't do that and you'll have to reel it in and clear it, of course. I mention this so you have a idea of the proper way a Buck Perry spoonplug acts in the water, so you can tune your lures as you make them. Sorry to hear about your family health issues.
Thanks a lot for all of your advice , .....by now I have already used some of my spoonplugs and I can only second to your statements . No catches occured so far , though , ....but as I've found out , these spoonplugs are well-suited to avoid bottom snags like mussels, rocks or submergerd branches , as when the lip runs into something , the spoonplug would flip over belly up and climb instantly for a few inches before it would fall back into swimming position to continue to wiggle along . My problem is , that through the years I had made so many lures , that I could barely cast them all , LOL ! But it happened to me a few times before , that particular lures would get dumped down the basement for years , before they'd be given another chance and put in a tackle box at season's beginning and then these would then prove to be excellent catchers . Thanks a lot for subscribing , though I did not feel like making new videos for a long time now , ....hopefully I'd be back on the screen some day , it's just , that some different preferences came up in my life now . Meine Kameras sind nicht neu , .....die Werkstatt-Sequenzen habe ich mit 'ner "Nikon CoolPix" Fotokamera gemacht , und die Unterwassersequenzen mit meiner "Denver AC 5000W" Action Cam , ...und die hat schon 'ne Macke auf ihrer Linse ! New lure???? Spoonplugs were first marketed back in the 1950's by Buck Perry who invented them and still holds the largemouth bass world record. I still have several of them from back then.

+Janne Ovaska Hallo , Janne , ......I've come across the "Russelure" in a catalog years ago , but found it too complicate to make my own version. During the early 1960s the DAM had a similar lure offered , a casting lure in lengths of 40 , 50 , 60 , and 70 millimetres , ......sometimes you'd still find threse on Ebay or fleamarkets . You can cast any of Bucks! In fact the 100 series, is my go to for casting to a school of fish. The are not for trolling only.

and I had found , that they had also made more simple to bend , but pretty much larger versions , of the old Buck Perry lures , and these became my reference for the lures in this video !

Sadly I have lost my enthusiasm and passion for lure making , thus also making videos about it , either .
Me and wife had to take care of senior family members suffering of dementia during the past years , which obviously took it's share of our mental welfare , too .
By now my aunt and my father have passed away at 89 and 86 years of age , but still I'm unable to get back to my usual ways .
This is also and mainly due to the present political situation in my fatherland Germany !
I simply can't go back to business as usual , while our beds are burning and our nation is intended to be brought to it's knees by the globalist agenda flooding us with islamic migrants and autodestructive green ideologies .
Nevertheless , I'm still going fishing frequently , as the outdoors is seemingly still the only bit of my homecountry , that has not changed drastically and still looks like it ever did and that I still feel like at home in .
I do not think , that I will ever make any new videos , but nevertheless I'm always trying to answer any upcoming questions regarding the contents of these older clips .
Never meant to get political , as this is strictly a fishing-, and lure-related channel , but this is the only and true reply , that I can give to you .

I am looking to create some of B Perry's plugs this winter in hopes of triggering some deep water bass next year.
I would not go thicker than 1,5 millimetres sheet thickness , but this also depends on the general size of the lures .
Bear in mind , that the thicker the sheet material , the heavier it would get , thus the more mass would have to be moved to put the lure into it's swimming action . If you have two lures of same size but of different sheet thicknesses , the lighter lure of thinner sheet would always move a bit livelier .
I would use 1,5mm sheet thickness only for the large 13 cms lures , maybe also for 10 cms , but not smaller ones , for these 1,0 mm sheet thickness would still be OK , ...the genuine Buck Perry Spoonplugs of different sizes all have the same sheet thickness of about 0,5mm .
These lures are originally intended for trolling , so weight does not really matter , as they have a built-in tendency not to rise to the surface too much .
I've found , that even heavier sheet lures do not have te best casting performance due to their anti-aerodynamic shape , ........they'd only cast little more than half as far compared to an ordinary spoon of same weight , and lures of only 0,5mm sheet are really , really poor on the cast .
But on retrieve they yet seem to be quite snag-resistant , since any time the pointed diving bill hits a bottom obstacle , the spoonplug would flip over instanly to rise up a bit and same time turning the hooks upward clear of the obstacle , ......after a short distance of further retrieve it would then fall back into swimming position to continue to wiggle along .
Use stainless steel of 0,5mm for very small trolling lures(brass sheet only in 1,0mm thickness or thicker , 0,5mm brass warps easily ) , .......1,0mm and 1,5mm thickness brass and stainless steel for medium sized and larger lures , ...copper sheet is not that well suited , as it is is quite soft and warps easily .

Spoonplugs should run nose down and tail up and track in a straight line, if that helps you any.
When properly balanced a spoonplug that is fouled with a small amount of weeds should flip over, belly up, and come to the water surface where you can jerk the rod and flip the weeds off the lure then the lure will flip right side up again and dive back to the bottom without reeling in your line, while trolling. If it's fouled with to much weeds it won't do that and you'll have to reel it in and clear it, of course. I mention this so you have a idea of the proper way a Buck Perry spoonplug acts in the water, so you can tune your lures as you make them.

No catches occured so far , though , ....but as I've found out , these spoonplugs are well-suited to avoid bottom snags like mussels, rocks or submergerd branches , as when the lip runs into something , the spoonplug would flip over belly up and climb instantly for a few inches before it would fall back into swimming position to continue to wiggle along .

My problem is , that through the years I had made so many lures , that I could barely cast them all , LOL !
But it happened to me a few times before , that particular lures would get dumped down the basement for years , before they'd be given another chance and put in a tackle box at season's beginning and then these would then prove to be excellent catchers .

Meine Kameras sind nicht neu , .....die Werkstatt-Sequenzen habe ich mit 'ner "Nikon CoolPix" Fotokamera gemacht , und die Unterwassersequenzen mit meiner "Denver AC 5000W" Action Cam , ...und die hat schon 'ne Macke auf ihrer Linse !
Sollte mir 'mal eine neue Kamera kaufen , ja , .........muß dazu aber mit meiner Regierung verhandeln , LOL !

During my lure making carreer I've made quite a few versions of already proven , commercial lures , some were not even accurate copies as only being made after pictures .
But surely some of these came out to be great catchers for me , sadly this particular one snot , though I've caught one or two trout on the mallest version so far , but I do not tie them on very often , since they do not cast too far .

I am sorry , but apart from my sheet metal templates I do not have any blueprints anymore .
To initially make them , I bought a sample of a "Buck Perry spoonplug" from US-Ebay and took measurements and bending angles off that sample , afterwards calculated measurements in relation of required dimensions to furnish my templates .

New lure???? Spoonplugs were first marketed back in the 1950's by Buck Perry who invented them and still holds the largemouth bass world record. I still have several of them from back then.

Hallo , Janne , ......I've come across the "Russelure" in a catalog years ago , but found it too complicate to make my own version.
During the early 1960s the DAM had a similar lure offered , a casting lure in lengths of 40 , 50 , 60 , and 70 millimetres , ......sometimes you'd still find threse on Ebay or fleamarkets .
This Spoonplug is just a lot easier to build with it's straight bending work !
