  • An incredible Olympic high jump final ended with both Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi taking gold medals.
After an exhausting two-hour competition, the pair couldn't be split, having recorded best clearances of 2.37 metres.
The athletes were offered an opportunity to take part in a jump-off. But in a moment of sportsmanship, they agreed to share the title, sparking huge celebrations.
Both had three failures as they attempted to match the Olympic record of 2.39m and, with error-free records on countback, could have fought for sole possession of the title.
Instead, they made history - it was the first joint Olympic podium in athletics since 1912.

For non Italian speaker: Tamberi in his interview with Italian television (where Barshim intervened too) said Barshim IS the greatest world jumper, so this medal for Tamberi means even more because he didn't expect it. I believe he thought Barshim would have won in the jump off (that's why it's even more grand that Barshim proposed the tie, he was the favourite). This shared victory show their respect and friendship over everything else

It's really not that hard to figure out. The fact that Barshim didn’t even hesitate to not only ask if they could have two golds, but then as soon as the judge said it was possible, immediately turn to his friend and say they were Olympic champions, shows the tremendous amount of respect and admiration that they both have for each other.
