Thank you so much for sharing! I've seen similar comments popping up and I want to clarify... I completely understand both perspectives, as I mentioned in the video. When I say I would want my partner to have my back, I'm not suggesting they get physical or even violent (personally I would not want a partner that crashes out like that, at least not over some words lol). I would hope my partner would know how to deescalate in a situation like that. For example in this scenario, as they are walking to the car it would've been dope if Brice laughed along with the guys and said something on the lines of "Yeah, I have a good one with me but let's be respectful. You fellas have a nice evening" or even if he responded the same way he did in the movie accompanied by comforting his wife. In the video I start to say " As much as I would want my husband to defend me.... I wouldn't want him to get hurt but I would want him to say something to make me feel better" but my brain runs a mile a minute when I'm recording and I literally didn't finish the thought before moving on lmao. I didn't think to circle back because I really didn't think this many people would be upset by it after I said I understood both perspectives (I think both perspectives are completely valid. Perry has such an opportunity to get other black writers/directors/creatives off the ground to tell DIFFERENT stories in the black experience. Being reduced to trauma is exhausting at this point.
My god is that so true! He could’ve been the black equivalent of Walt Disney and handled the producer /businessman role, while recruiting new and old talent to tell innovative black stories/films. Now he’s being overshadowed by the likes of Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele (and many more talented black directors), when in a different timeline, if he had played his cards right, those directors could’ve been making films under HIS production.

Another thing that really pissed me off about Temptation was the fact that Judith’s first time with Harley was completely nonconsensual. She told him “no” several times and he refused to take it for an answer. I got the sense that she recognized she was attracted to him, but didn’t really plan to act on it, at least not during the plane ride. I think the way she crashed out later was a result of guilt and confusion from the assault.
Right, and it was only when *he* wanted, he stopped and said "Stop it! Stop it! Now you can say you resisted", after you pushed up all on her and got her confused. And even then she didn't give a direct answer.
I had to argue with my Grandma about this. She argued that Harley was right and Judith just wanted to save face/have an excuse. Uh, no. He coerced her into sleeping with him, proved that he won’t take no for an answer, and he is in a position of power over her. That was r*pe.

Brenda did not fold under pressure when Charles was shot. She was a gold digger and wanted to inherit his money. That’s why she drained his bank account and got ghost. Brenda was not his only mistress, she just happened to be the one with the biggest finesse. She was willing to become his baby mother while he’s married. Charles is so arrogant that he doesn’t realize this woman is only after him for his money. She would’ve never looked his way if he wasn’t rich and powerful. I believe that possibly Helen reminded him of his past when he used to be broke. That’s why some older women say not to build with certain men because they will always even if subconsciously associate YOU with struggle. It doesn’t help that Brenda is a racially ambiguous woman who stands in direct contrast with Helen.
I seen some where it says some men will lost respect for you because they don’t respect or Love themselves so it’s like they project those feelings onto The woman. Like the energy is the man looking at the woman he is with like “ she’s with a bum she isn’t a quality woman” WHEN HE’S the BUM in question! Acrimony felt like they were punishing the character for deciding that enough was enough of letting this man use her and now she can't get entirety of the blessings that she helped if not worked for

It sometimes feels like TP punishes the women characters who get with the bad guy and ignores the nice guys in his films. Judith, Grace, Megan goods character, Melinda… it’s like it’s his way of punishing women for not choosing him IRL. And I wonder if his dad is dark skin. He’s got issues and he shows it in his work
I think TP's comments on "high brow negroes" perfectly encapsulates his weaknesses as a writer/director. He cannot fathom that regardless of subject matter, his execution is way off. The egregious part is that he hasn't become a better filmmaker after 20 years of financial success. He's gotten worse. There are plenty of directors that have genres/themes throughout their films. However, you can see the effort and care put into that vision. His focus is on churning out product and he proudly says so. I don't watch his tv shows but I can't imagine they are much different. Now he's onto streaming and its an unholy union.
The shows are somehow way worse, I don't watch them but some of my friends do. He doesn't care at all about his work because he knows he's got his faithful following who will see it all no matter what. Very little actual logic and thinking goes into his scripts and it never fails to be a glaring issue with each movie/show.

I really can't help shake the impression that Acrimony was Tyler Perry airing particular personal grievances after becoming rich, because it's kind of a story about this guy who looks like a total screw up that seems to have a complete pipe dream nobody believes in, but eventually becomes super-rich from it (like Tyler Perry), so he has his self-insert be this nice guy who tries to make amends, he has all those former acquaintances that are fundamentally villains that feel entitled to a piece of him. He doesn't have to be sympathetic to the wife anymore, he can make it about himself (more than usual).
I despise Temptation. So much. Just when I think i hate any of his later movies, I remember Temptation and get angry all over again. While i dont know anyone who has HIV/AIDS, i still sympathize with the stigma surrounding them. To treat their condition as a punishment is to condemn people who contract it through other means and basically saying that the ones who do get it through sex (in any context) deserve to suffer as a lesson to those without. Its sick and cruel.
You probably know someone who has it, you just don't know they have it (and maybe they don't even know they have it). I used to think I knew no one with it yet my best friend had it (got it from taking care of her mom in the early 90s when she wasn't even 5 yet coz their whole family was shunned and she was the oldest). Then later on I learnt two of my cousins have it and I know my uncle has it but he doesn't know he has it which is f'd up since he's a rake.
I had a friend lose his life defending his woman from some dude talking shit. Now he dead and she happy. That taught me to learn how to de-escalate instead of trying to be tough. My life is more important than words. Now if they are physically putting their hands on her then that's different

I feel Acrimony would have been a great movie to dive into mental illness in the black community and how it carries to the children undetected. In the movie the sisters mention their father had the same temperament. And possibly he had angry issues as well as some underlying mental health issues that were not addressed. And his daughter unfortunately had what he had. I feel if the movie ended with of course her being held accountable for her actions and then getting psychiatric help and learning to love herself, deal with her mother's passing and sister's neglect, as well as her mental illness and coming out on the other end healed or at least healing it would have been more powerful .
I agree. He did a poor job explaining Melinda’s mental health issues. It was obvious he didn’t consult with medical professionals. What therapist in their right mind would propose the idea of personality disorder to an emotionally volatile woman like Melinda?

Those early Madea movies are entertaining but that’s about it. Especially seeing how they aged from 15-20 years ago, there isn’t much at all that you should take away. You gotta see thru the brainwashing and just enjoy the movie for what it is. For example The family reunion scene from Madeas family reunion invoked that nostalgic African American family vibe that’s slowly dying out. Also, I think he might have heard our complaints on this because he fixes this with I Do Want To Do Wrong and Madea Class Reunion (even though that play was bad) and technically I Can Do Bad All By Myself, the movie (April was a mistress and was cheating with a married man). I think his bigger sin is having the worst thing a woman can do is cheat. The worst thing a man can do is be a manipulative, abusive sociopath... who also cheats. A man who just cheats can be forgiven but a with a woman, eh, maybe, if she deserves it and is really sorry and if the husband feels like forgiving her. He's not obligated like the woman is. That, to me, is more problematic. He should have a movie/play where the man is at least left solely because he cheated, and that's all. There doesn't have to be another reason.
I think that for Bryce... Honestly Judith didnt need to communicate that much on the s*x thing. Men know what women want, when she start kissing on him, and literally telling him to hit. He basically showed her that he wasnt that into her..they were just having s*x cause it was something they were supposed to do. I think its very much implied that Bryce wants to be a traditional man..but he didnt have the funds to be that at the time. And Judith was never interested in being a traditional wife...she wanted to career, the business, etc...

I love the video but I feel like you glossed over the biggest problem with Temptation: Harley raped Judy. She had repeatedly rejected his advances and she said “No!” multiple times when he crawled on top of her, after he got her alone on a plane. When Judy got home after being raped on a private plane, looking tired and disheveled, both her own mother and husband immediately jump down her throat for going on a business trip. Bryce the space cadet wasn’t going to listen to her and her mom was disappointed she wasn’t being the ideal Christian wife. Her affair isn’t defensible but I can see why she went back to the guy who raped her because he was the only one that listened to her (atp anyway).
This is such an important take. I am not sure if its because the movie itself brushes past this and everything that follows after is such chaos but, after reading your comment, I literally had to run to Netflix and fastforward to that scene. This is my issue with some "dark romance" themes. I've seen so many movies and have read so many books that romanticize a woman "succumbing" to a man's advances. After rereading your comment and rewatching the scene, it definitely feels so much more sinister, and honestly... it kind of freaks me out that I didn't receive it that way the first time. Even with the private plane scene, I don't think TP wants the audience to sympathize with Judith. When I did this video, I watched the behind the scenes for some of the movies, including this one, and he describes the progression of Judith and Harley as a result of Judith's "own choices and her own decisions". Which I already knew his MO with the plot of the movie and what his "moral of the story" was but considering the private plane scene, it makes his ideology SIGNIFICANTLY worst and concerning. I've talked about this movie with sooo many people and not once has anyone described the private plane scene in the way you did. I think that is also telling of how maybe some of us should rethink sa and sa victims. Regardless of Judith's attraction to Harley and the context that we receive leading up to this scene and the scenes that follow after, she sure as hell did say no MULTIPLE TIMES. now if we just looked at his made movies from a comedy perspective then sure, i can see it. but even as a non black person i dont really understand how his “theme” of movies is supposed to help black ppl ? like sure, trauma is real in black ppl and other non white groups, like trauma is so prevalent in our lives as minorities, but to see us as only that is kinda … despairing. like as an asian trans guy, i have a lot of parental issues, as a lot of ppl my age who are also asian can relate too, but idk me personally im tired of crying over movies w asian culture and families and characters that involve healing bonds between parents and children that have very different ideologies about how to live life

With Tyler Perry, I understand him writing from his life experiences but conceptually, some of his stories are just really problematic. I say one of because there was a whole second story here in this film that Tyler Perry completely neglected dealing with her potentially having an internal mental situation that her mother also had, it was a throw away line early in the film. In the second movie, it sounds like the lesson should have been "communicate with your partner your needs, if you cannot satisfy each other either find a solution or part ways instead of endangering yourself by running off thoughtlessly with someone who could very possibly ruin your life in a way that can't be undone" and I still think the ending would have been dramatic.
I haven’t seen Acrimony, but I think the take away was that sometimes you just had to let some stuff go. No matter how much it hurt you because if you keep holding onto your anger resentment than it would eventually lead to your downfall.

Imma be so honest Tyler Perry’s movies gave me a terrible view of the black community. Based on what was happening at home and what was depicted in black movies growing up it was always the black women getting abused by the black man I completely wanted to detach from my black side. When I was 9 I promised myself that I would never get married to a black man. Up until this year I was never attracted to a black man. These movies while they are entertaining shouldn’t be movies we should be promoting to our community let alone our kids.

It took me going to an HBCU for me to see that black people are so diverse and come from all walks of life. Til this day, I say going to an HBCU was the best decision I’ve ever made in terms of feeling connected and embraced by our community. The reality is there’s good and bad with every race/ethnicity. I’ve come to know and love some really amazing black men. It feels like sometimes media is set up specifically for us to demonize one another. ❤️❤️❤️
I think that happened to me to,not sure if it was Tyler specifically. I only stopped after realizing even whites are annoying and bad to each other. Also I started liking black men but more light skin for now but hopefully it will grow
i actually dont mind his films. And my family really loves them all. But A Medea Halloween was one that stood out to me because the issue in the film is that Medea's nephew or something wont hit his kids and now his daughters become a bit of a delinquent. But then the film goes on to explain the reason as to why in a "joke" scene. Turns out Medea and the others traumatized him and went way too far on several occasions with one instance leaving one of his family jewels punctured.... Its no wonder he's scared to hit anyone now but Medea and co just laugh it off and can only respond with "but did you die?" Also theres some odd inappropriate jokes in there but mostly the traumatized father bit stood out since his refusal to dicipline his daughter was the main in-lore problem in the movie
In temptation I know a lot of ladies do not like this story. But In marriage when there are problems you have to communicate. Judith would state a want with no follow through. You have to teach people especially your partner how to treat you. I still think Bryson should’ve been more hands on but our partners cannot read our minds. I just think they could’ve solved issues with more long intimate and proactive conversations. With Bryson he was definitely disconnected, neglectful, and passive. He should take accountability for that and recognize where he might’ve went wrong so he doesn’t repeat it in another relationship. However, none of this is reason to cheat. Now on to Harley, I believe he is a complex villain with a terrifying history of neglect and abuse. It was so shitty for him to drag her out of the house but it was also shitty for her to bring up his history of abuse to humiliate him. Not to mention when he promoted her to make a decision about him she threw wine and food at him. I’m sorry but that is not how to communicate with people not your husband or your side piece. Judith was definitely a flawed character and not as much as a victim as I previously thought. Honestly, this is a story with no heroes. In life we can and will hurt the ones we love and most of the time it’s unintentional, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We need to be more active and accountable to move forward.
I agree in terms of Judith and Bryce, they most definitely could've cordially resolved their issues by either continuing their marriage or getting a divorce. Relationships definitely take work, and I do not think that was something either of them were prepared for 😭. Now, I will say I do have a different perception of Harley and Judith's interaction from when I first made the video. Someone pointed out that although Judith may have began emotionally cheating on Bryce, and was physically attracted to Harely, that their first sexual interaction was not as black as white as I initially perceived (I'm referencing the private plane scene when Judith and Harely went on their business trip). 28:07 my parents are counselors, and they have been happily married for over 40 years, but some of their counselor colleagues and friends are terrible cheaters. And in fact, one of the things they run into when training new counselors is really having to hammer home that you cannot have relations with people who are your clients, especially when you are a marriage counselor for effs sake. Anyway, so my point is it’s actually pretty realistic to have someone who wants to be a marriage counselor be clueless about marriage and a functioning relationship.
I think in acrimony it’s not as much about making Robert the victim as it is highlighting the complexity of human nature and distorted perception. We all want to believe that people are either good or evil but most people are a combination of both.
I think it was more so about carrying or being consumed by resentment "acrimony". The movie definitely displays all of the things you mentioned. I don't think the movie was about making Robert into the victim but I do think Tyler Perry wrote his character as a victim to further his perception of acrimony. Making Melinda's character unjust. Which to an extent she definitely is unjust not with her feelings per se but how she chose to express them throughout the movie. Thank you for sharing!!❤
There is something I really find annoying in Tyler perry movies and that's the fact that there are so many lose ends that don't get wrapped up thought the story. In Diary of a Mad Black Woman for example When the ex-husband gets shot and his wife comes back to torture him. we never see his light skinned side chick or her children ever again after the first few scenes in the movie. What happened to her? Did she leave him? I haven't watched the movie in a while, but I don't remember it being explained why he lived alone tbh.
When Helen goes back to "help/torture" Charles lol, she mentions that Brenda emptied out his bank account and left. I have noticed that with some of his movies as well. Where the ending feels a bit rushed.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman is the only one I go back and re-watch. It still has problematic parts for sure but I feel like that’s his best movie and it’s so memeable with my sister and I. Idk, maybe I wouldn’t have such high regard for it if it wasn’t for my sister. Nice video btw!
I wish Tyler would hire different writers/directors to tackle different genres with more Black and other characters, like fantasy, action, musical, etc. Just to really expand beyond trauma/drama while elevating Black actors.
I feel like Acrimony is about how consuming anger can be even if it’s justified. I didn’t feel like the movie was saying stay with the man. He cheated on her and spent all her money. She gave and gave and gave and then she finally set boundaries but it was too late. A relationship is a partnership. And when you give too much and it’s not reciprocal you are the one that suffers in real life.

The self defense thing with Harley and Bryce was completely different. With Bryce there was a group of guys talking to Judith and with Harley there was a normal guy on a bicycle. I know that Harley wouldn’t have done anything if he was in the same situation as Bryce.

I supported Tyler Perry early on because of his story. It was good to see more black movies at first, but the lack of character development has ruined it for me. Every movie seems like a continuation.
I always wanted to make a video on this. I think it's because there's not a lot of known black directors that can be up to his level(maybe Spike). Tyler does movies and tv,his shows and movies were the only time I saw someone look like me. I feel lots of the older actors are moving on though which is good

I’m Latina and I loved his first couple movies. His last ones are pretty cringe, especially the homecoming. The Madea boo movies were very cheesy. The movie, the diary of a black woman, is very relatable even if you weren’t black. How many women are there in the world haven’t been left for a younger woman? I honestly feel like Perry's main problem is that his views are generally outdated, stagnant, and lack creativity or nuance and he's too arrogant to make changes that would benefit his productions as a whole. I had to hang it up after Acrimony when I realized for most of his movie, the actors are carrying the entire experience even when the writing is bad. I can always say there's a good scene as opposed to a good movie. To this day, I think he's only made 2 or 3 movies that were actually good that I can return to. For me, most of his content has no replay value as a complete body of work. The older I get, the worse his movies are in my opinion.

When I say I would want my partner to have my back, I'm not suggesting they get physical or even violent (personally I would not want a partner that crashes out like that, at least not over some words lol). I would hope my partner would know how to deescalate in a situation like that. For example in this scenario, as they are walking to the car it would've been dope if Brice laughed along with the guys and said something on the lines of "Yeah, I have a good one with me but let's be respectful. You fellas have a nice evening" or even if he responded the same way he did in the movie accompanied by comforting his wife. In the video I start to say " As much as I would want my husband to defend me.... I wouldn't want him to get hurt but I would want him to say something to make me feel better" but my brain runs a mile a minute when I'm recording and I literally didn't finish the thought before moving on lmao. Another thing that really pissed me off about Temptation was the fact that Judith’s first time with Harley was completely nonconsensual. She told him “no” several times and he refused to take it for an answer. I got the sense that she recognized she was attracted to him, but didn’t really plan to act on it, at least not during the plane ride. I think the way she crashed out later was a result of guilt and confusion from the assault.
Right, and it was only when *he* wanted, he stopped and said "Stop it! Stop it! Now you can say you resisted", after you pushed up all on her and got her confused. And even then she didn't give a direct answer.

Tyler Perry's thoughts on therapy and therapists is pretty clear if you look at his movies.
Brenda did not fold under pressure when Charles was shot. She was a gold digger and wanted to inherit his money. That’s why she drained his bank account and got ghost. Brenda was not his only mistress, she just happened to be the one with the biggest finesse. She was willing to become his baby mother while he’s married. Charles is so arrogant that he doesn’t realize this woman is only after him for his money. She would’ve never looked his way if he wasn’t rich and powerful. I believe that possibly Helen reminded him of his past when he used to be broke. That’s why some older women say not to build with certain men because they will always even if subconsciously associate YOU with struggle. It doesn’t help that Brenda is a racially ambiguous woman who stands in direct contrast with Helen.

I think TP's comments on "high brow negroes" perfectly encapsulates his weaknesses as a writer/director. He cannot fathom that regardless of subject matter, his execution is way off. The egregious part is that he hasn't become a better filmmaker after 20 years of financial success. He's gotten worse. There are plenty of directors that have genres/themes throughout their films. However, you can see the effort and care put into that vision. His focus is on churning out product and he proudly says so. I don't watch his tv shows but I can't imagine they are much different. Now he's onto streaming and its an unholy union.
The shows are somehow way worse, I don't watch them but some of my friends do. He doesn't care at all about his work because he knows he's got his faithful following who will see it all no matter what. Very little actual logic and thinking goes into his scripts and it never fails to be a glaring issue with each movie/show.

I really can't help shake the impression that Acrimony was Tyler Perry airing particular personal grievances after becoming rich, because it's kind of a story about this guy who looks like a total screw up that seems to have a complete pipe dream nobody believes in, but eventually becomes super-rich from it (like Tyler Perry), so he has his self-insert be this nice guy who tries to make amends, he has all those former acquaintances that are fundamentally villains that feel entitled to a piece of him. He doesn't have to be sympathetic to the wife anymore, he can make it about himself (more than usual).
I despise Temptation. So much. Just when I think i hate any of his later movies, I remember Temptation and get angry all over again.
While i dont know anyone who has HIV/AIDS, i still sympathize with the stigma surrounding them. To treat their condition as a punishment is to condemn people who contract it through other means and basically saying that the ones who do get it through sex (in any context) deserve to suffer as a lesson to those without.

I used to think I knew no one with it yet my best friend had it (got it from taking care of her mom in the early 90s when she wasn't even 5 yet coz their whole family was shunned and she was the oldest). Then later on I learnt two of my cousins have it and I know my uncle has it but he doesn't know he has it which is f'd up since he's a rake.
I had a friend lose his life defending his woman from some dude talking shit. Now he dead and she happy. That taught me to learn how to de-escalate instead of trying to be tough. My life is more important than words. Now if they are physically putting their hands on her then that's different

I feel Acrimony would have been a great movie to dive into mental illness in the black community and how it carries to the children undetected. In the movie the sisters mention their father had the same temperament. And possibly he had angry issues as well as some underlying mental health issues that were not addressed. And his daughter unfortunately had what he had. I feel if the movie ended with of course her being held accountable for her actions and then getting psychiatric help and learning to love herself, deal with her mother's passing and sister's neglect, as well as her mental illness and coming out on the other end healed or at least healing it would have been more powerful .

Those early Madea movies are entertaining but that’s about it. Especially seeing how they aged from 15-20 years ago, there isn’t much at all that you should take away. You gotta see thru the brainwashing and just enjoy the movie for what it is. For example The family reunion scene from Madeas family reunion invoked that nostalgic African American family vibe that’s slowly dying out. I love the video but I feel like you glossed over the biggest problem with Temptation:
Harley raped Judy. She had repeatedly rejected his advances and she said “No!” multiple times when he crawled on top of her, after he got her alone on a plane. When Judy got home after being raped on a private plane, looking tired and disheveled, both her own mother and husband immediately jump down her throat for going on a business trip. Bryce the space cadet wasn’t going to listen to her and her mom was disappointed she wasn’t being the ideal Christian wife.
Her affair isn’t defensible but I can see why she went back to the guy who raped her because he was the only one that listened to her (atp anyway).
This is such an important take. I am not sure if its because the movie itself brushes past this and everything that follows after is such chaos but, after reading your comment, I literally had to run to Netflix and fastforward to that scene. This is my issue with some "dark romance" themes. I've seen so many movies and have read so many books that romanticize a woman "succumbing" to a man's advances. After rereading your comment and rewatching the scene, it definitely feels so much more sinister, and honestly... it kind of freaks me out that I didn't receive it that way the first time. Even with the private plane scene, I don't think TP wants the audience to sympathize with Judith. When I did this video, I watched the behind the scenes for some of the movies, including this one, and he describes the progression of Judith and Harley as a result of Judith's "own choices and her own decisions". Which I already knew his MO with the plot of the movie and what his "moral of the story" was but considering the private plane scene, it makes his ideology SIGNIFICANTLY worst and concerning. I've talked about this movie with sooo many people and not once has anyone described the private plane scene in the way you did. I think that is also telling of how maybe some of us should rethink sa and sa victims. Regardless of Judith's attraction to Harley and the context that we receive leading up to this scene and the scenes that follow after, she sure as hell did say no MULTIPLE TIMES. I haven’t seen Acrimony, but I think the take away was that sometimes you just had to let some stuff go. No matter how much it hurt you because if you keep holding onto your anger resentment than it would eventually lead to your downfall.

Imma be so honest Tyler Perry’s movies gave me a terrible view of the black community. Based on what was happening at home and what was depicted in black movies growing up it was always the black women getting abused by the black man I completely wanted to detach from my black side. When I was 9 I promised myself that I would never get married to a black man. Up until this year I was never attracted to a black man. These movies while they are entertaining shouldn’t be movies we should be promoting to our community let alone our kids.

It took me going to an HBCU for me to see that black people are so diverse and come from all walks of life. Til this day, I say going to an HBCU was the best decision I’ve ever made in terms of feeling connected and embraced by our community. The reality is there’s good and bad with every race/ethnicity. I think that happened to me to,not sure if it was Tyler specifically. I only stopped after realizing even whites are annoying and bad to each other. Also I started liking black men but more light skin for now but hopefully it will grow
i actually dont mind his films. And my family really loves them all. But A Medea Halloween was one that stood out to me because the issue in the film is that Medea's nephew or something wont hit his kids and now his daughters become a bit of a delinquent. But then the film goes on to explain the reason as to why in a "joke" scene. Turns out Medea and the others traumatized him and went way too far on several occasions with one instance leaving one of his family jewels punctured.... Its no wonder he's scared to hit anyone now but Medea and co just laugh it off and can only respond with "but did you die?" Also theres some odd inappropriate jokes in there but mostly the traumatized father bit stood out since his refusal to dicipline his daughter was the main in-lore problem in the movie

In temptation I know a lot of ladies do not like this story. But In marriage when there are problems you have to communicate. Judith would state a want with no follow through. You have to teach people especially your partner how to treat you. I still think Bryson should’ve been more hands on but our partners cannot read our minds. I just think they could’ve solved issues with more long intimate and proactive conversations. With Bryson he was definitely disconnected, neglectful, and passive. He should take accountability for that and recognize where he might’ve went wrong so he doesn’t repeat it in another relationship. However, none of this is reason to cheat. Now on to Harley, I believe he is a complex villain with a terrifying history of neglect and abuse. It was so shitty for him to drag her out of the house but it was also shitty for her to bring up his history of abuse to humiliate him. Not to mention when he promoted her to make a decision about him she threw wine and food at him. I’m sorry but that is not how to communicate with people not your husband or your side piece. Judith was definitely a flawed character and not as much as a victim as I previously thought. Honestly, this is a story with no heroes. In life we can and will hurt the ones we love and most of the time it’s unintentional, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We need to be more active and accountable to move forward.
I agree in terms of Judith and Bryce, they most definitely could've cordially resolved their issues by either continuing their marriage or getting a divorce. Relationships definitely take work, and I do not think that was something either of them were prepared for 😭. Now, I will say I do have a different perception of Harley and Judith's interaction from when I first made the video. Someone pointed out that although Judith may have began emotionally cheating on Bryce, and was physically attracted to Harely, that their first sexual interaction was not as black as white as I initially perceived (I'm referencing the private plane scene when Judith and Harely went on their business trip). I had to go back and watch it after reading a comment that pointed this out. Harley's character was indeed sinister. Thank you so much for sharing!! I'm enjoying reading your takes ❤❤❤

28:07 my parents are counselors, and they have been happily married for over 40 years, but some of their counselor colleagues and friends are terrible cheaters. And in fact, one of the things they run into when training new counselors is really having to hammer home that you cannot have relations with people who are your clients, especially when you are a marriage counselor for effs sake. Anyway, so my point is it’s actually pretty realistic to have someone who wants to be a marriage counselor be clueless about marriage and a functioning relationship.
I think in acrimony it’s not as much about making Robert the victim as it is highlighting the complexity of human nature and distorted perception. We all want to believe that people are either good or evil but most people are a combination of both.
I think it was more so about carrying or being consumed by resentment "acrimony". The movie definitely displays all of the things you mentioned. I don't think the movie was about making Robert into the victim but I do think Tyler Perry wrote his character as a victim to further his perception of acrimony. Making Melinda's character unjust. Which to an extent she definitely is unjust not with her feelings per se but how she chose to express them throughout the movie. Thank you for sharing!!❤

There is something I really find annoying in Tyler perry movies and that's the fact that there are so many lose ends that don't get wrapped up thought the story. In Diary of a Mad Black Woman for example When the ex-husband gets shot and his wife comes back to torture him. we never see his light skinned side chick or her children ever again after the first few scenes in the movie. What happened to her? Did she leave him? I haven't watched the movie in a while, but I don't remember it being explained why he lived alone tbh.
When Helen goes back to "help/torture" Charles lol, she mentions that Brenda emptied out his bank account and left. I have noticed that with some of his movies as well. Where the ending feels a bit rushed.

I feel like Acrimony is about how consuming anger can be even if it’s justified. I didn’t feel like the movie was saying stay with the man. He cheated on her and spent all her money. She gave and gave and gave and then she finally set boundaries but it was too late. A relationship is a partnership. And when you give too much and it’s not reciprocal you are the one that suffers in real life.

The movie, the diary of a black woman, is very relatable even if you weren’t black. How many women are there in the world haven’t been left for a younger woman? I honestly feel like Perry's main problem is that his views are generally outdated, stagnant, and lack creativity or nuance and he's too arrogant to make changes that would benefit his productions as a whole. I had to hang it up after Acrimony when I realized for most of his movie, the actors are carrying the entire experience even when the writing is bad. I can always say there's a good scene as opposed to a good movie. To this day, I think he's only made 2 or 3 movies that were actually good that I can return to. For me, most of his content has no replay value as a complete body of work. The older I get, the worse his movies are in my opinion.
