- CHARLOTTE DUJARDIN sensationally pulled out of the Paris Olympics in disgrace after a video emerged of her allegedly whipping a horse.
Britain’s greatest horsewoman said she was “deeply ashamed” by her “error of judgement” in a coaching session “from four years ago”.
The lawyer for the complainant has alleged that Dujardin hit the horse with a long whip more than 24 times in one minute during a lesson with a 19-year-old female student at her private stable.
The FEI, the sport’s governing body, has launched a probe into the incident and has issued the athlete with a provisional six-month ban.

It was nervousness, shock and unbelievably. to what was happening. I know it sounds strange, I am not saying that it is the case in this situation.However the fact that it was posted could say I cant believe this is happening ..and it has to stop. Honestly if I was there I hope I would have had enough guts to go try and stop her.

If she was hitting the ground then I agree with you but if she was hitting the horse then I don't. Hard to tell as the sound of the whip is loud. I have had riding instructors use a lunge whip in my riding lessons years ago but never to hit the horse. It was said that the person filming was the sponsor of the horse and the rider was Dutch. If they are laughing and the rider did not come forward before, you have to say this looks a bit like espionage on the eve of the Olympics. A dressage rider in the USA has just been done for the same thing. I have watched this again and I wonder if she was hitting the boards. It is hard to tell.

After spending the whole of yesterday defending Charlotte , having seen this video for the first time I’m deeply shocked and saddened. For someone with her knowledge and experience to think that this is in anyway useful for the horse to learn is beyond me. If she’s willing to do this while teaching with others viewing and she knew she was being recorded can you imagine what she does privately. And whoever the person was who was laughing and thought it was funny you’re just as liable as Charlotte! The whole thing is disgusting and the majority (I hope) don’t treat our horses this way
Yes, thisvis the less agressive method. She wants the horse to run with the legs higher as that shows more human elegantm that is not natural for a horse. The horse is exhausted

My first experience with soring. The look in those poor horses’ eyes. Blank and dead. Defeated. Broken. It’s haunted me ever since.

I've been in horses all my life. When I heard she used a whip on a student's horse I presumed it was a 'known' training method of teaching passage/piaffe whereby the horses legs are tapped repeatedly with a lunge whip whist the horse's forward movement is slightly restricted by the rider, causing the horse's leg movement to elevate. NOT something I agree with at all btw, but lots of trainers do it! But wtf was Charlotte trying to get that poor animal to do? Aiming for collection? Try teaching the aids! And she was really belting that horse! Shortcuts never work, Charlotte. And cruelty to animals ( sniggering while watching included) is despicable. You've lost the respect and admiration of a lot of people 😢

Extreme conflict of aids causes tension and increased extravagance. Rewatch videos of her winning rides- exaggerated legs and a tight neck= conflicting aids. This cruel training practice creates winning rides. The sad truth about modern dressage.

Absolutely no reason to hit a horse with a whip, EVER, never mind a lunge whip. Whips are there as a light aid of touching, almost as an extension of your arm, certainly not causing harm. She is clearly showing that she carried this abuse out on other horses before and has no shame in beating someone else’s horse (whilst they are there and whilst knowing she is being filmed!). Very worrying behaviour. This horse is trying its best and is being incredibly stoic to protect the rider. This makes it even more upsetting. There will certainly be some phycological trauma from this session, never mind the pain the horse is experiencing. Terribly sad situation which seems to happen more and more when more money, pressure and expectation is involved. Horses should never be subjected to such abuse. Dressage is about working towards absolute connection and communication with your horse. It’s quite magical if done correctly. Horses have done so much for us humans throughout the years and we should feel lucky to have their trust. This is absolutely sickening and it is a sad day for dressage.

I absolutely agree with your well-put comment. I have seen other commenters saying that she might be hitting the ground and/or the boards and calling this acceptable. I disagree there, although it does not rise to the level of touching the horse with a cracked whip end, and repeatedly. The horse is clearly tired, confused, stressed and finally - and understandably - defends itself. This is unacceptable and a sorry excuse for “training”, and it is deeply disappointing to see what appears to be cruel and useless training from a rider so respected, particularly given her mentor’s reputation in the horse world as a true horse person. And this is a time in which this issue is so discussed in the horse world and everyone knows that the world will ban equestrian sports if this continues. Training takes knowledge, skill and art, and so experience. It takes time and exceptional and tactful riding. If we are not going to take that time, nor develop the skills to train and ride masterly, then by all means, ban the sport. I am a horse owner and equestrian. I recognize and revere true dressage and horse and rider partnership. Dujardin has won the top medals, but nothing in that means beyond all doubt that her practices are ethical and professional. The sniggering is beyond the pale.

Thar rider is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of her mount. She should have stopped her horse, dismounted and told Dujardin that her behaviour towards the horse was not on and led the horse out of the ménage.

@@leesboo1 It's common in all horse sports. None of it is about horses enjoying the sport - there's too much money and prestige riding on it. There's also a high level of control needed in such performance, so a good percentage of people involved are control freaks.

@@hollywooda111 I listened to a trainer speaking on LBC radio this morning. She was asked by Nick Ferrari can horses be trained by ”carrot or stick”. She said the carrot reward was just as efficient as the “stick” or in this case a whip.
I will admit that I have not given much thought to the training previously as it is not something that I follow, although I have seen it at the Olympics before.
I hope it is banned following this exposure, horses do not naturally dance around making these intricate movements. I for one cannot condone it.
The horrible person filming this laughing! Disgusting and the one whipping the horse shouldn’t be aloud near horses again! Shameful
People unfortunately get accustomed to that may have been the persons mum or something and had previously just been told it’s part of how we keep the horses in check it’s perfectly normal blah blah. Doesn’t excuse anything but this looks like it’s very normalised behaviour.
My assumption is that most people competing at that level will be doing this
The one laughing and filming I understand was the sponsor of the horse and the rider is Dutch. They are as much to blame and this is espionage to knock Charlotte out of the Olympics. Her behaviour however is stupid and unacceptable. A USA rider has been done for the same thing.
@@lloydgiles4816 I think if you have to whip an animal to make it do something isn’t right and if they can’t do that event while not using a whip in training then it should be banned.
@@angelabaker1992 I agree with you on this 100% on this being a personal sabotage attempt towards Charlotte. The fact they are laughing witnessing this is behaviour on their horse shows they also have no remorse to the welfare of the horse undergoing training and are now coming out with this as a clear last minute attempt to disqualify her competing. As you say however; this does not in any way discount her behaviour towards the horse during this training session (and potentially others) which is completely intolerable.
She should have all her medals she’s won over the years immediately rescinded. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. From a person of privilege who couldn’t care less about the poor animal and only about her glory and ego. Totally unacceptable abuse. ✌️

Cruelty towards animals in any sports should be banned. Horse whipping should really be a punishable offence.

This post is about CD, not racing therefore people aren’t talking about racing. And we could keep going, barrel racing, reining, show jumping, etc etc etc. but again, people can care about it all & still focus on the issue with CD.
Not condoning whip use for any sport/training , but eg in racing , the whip is to stimulate forward movement . Here the horse is trapped and has no means of escape. Which I think is worse, because then it becomes mental abuse .
horse racing around the world generally is losing audiences massively n has been for a number of years, such that it may be on its last legs. Those who were ambivalent about horse sports n exploitation are being reminded more n more that animal abuse for entertainment is getting the spotlight.

The student was 15, and being taught by an olympian who by their understanding should know far better than them and are being taught from a position of power. I don't think it's fair to shift blame onto a child.

She laughing because they are just working, this is how you get a horse trained to perform these routines. If you think all other trainers use kind words you are delusional.
As a professional horsewoman, I can confirm just how easy it is to get frustrated with a horse and turn to problematic methods like these. It then becomes a habit and you feel it's a normal and acceptable training method. We've all been victims of our frustration at times. This is why I teach my students that if they are starting to feel angry or frustrated, or have any overpowering emotion - put the horse away and readdress the issue when you are less emotional. If they can't control their emotions around horses, they are gone, that is that.
Absolutely! I've had "difficult" horses all my life and the only way is patience.
I've owned horses for 50 years. I've NEVER abused them. If you get that frustrated you need to take a timeout to breathe.
I appreciate this comment. Many times riders feel they have to "finish on a good note" but your advice is practical; sometimes it's in the best interest of the horse and the rider to 'try again tomorrow'.
I would have thought that if a horse is repeatedly throwing the rider or halting before a vault that it is the problem of the horse and not the student. You completely ignored the need to train bad habits out of the horse and if your response is to put it back in the stable I can guarantee you will have a whole lot of disobedient horses.

As a psychologist I can say that this was for sure not an error. I feel already ashamed and angry for the fact that she won golden medals anywhere for this kind of abuse. This was not her first time. I’m also sorry for the example she gave to that young girl…

I am a keeper of equines - I have four donkeys - and I have a profound respect for their sensitivity and intelligence. If I treated them as appallingly as this "professional" horsewoman, I would expect to be prosecuted and have my animals removed. She should not be allowed to keep equines again until she has undergone some sort of RSPCA education course about animal suffering. After watching this video - which is utterly sickening - I wouldn't trust this woman to keep a hamster.
