While FSMR may be dead, a lot of the old Metroid fangame community that he and I were a part of are still around and still make things, but I think by this point everyone's old enough to realize that remaking Super isn't worth it.
I'm glad this video exists, but I do wish there had been some mention of Metroid: Fan Mission, which was where a lot of FSMR stuff (and other Metroid fangames, including AM2R) was first published.

The most realistic thing you could do with super is create the game again with reworked controls and bosses, as well as maybe some new bosses to throw in the mix but nothing too crazy.

As much as I heavily appreciate them working on a remake, I feel like using the zero mission style again for super metroid would have made it not feel like super metroid. The movement and momentum in super is so unique compared to any other 2D metroid and a remake that didn't mirror that 1:1 would feel very strange. Same with the art style and samus in particular, her body being taller and the floatier movement letting the game showcase her sprite in detail moving around in segments. Having zero mission or a mild variant of the ZM sprite would make the game look not quite right.
Super is one of those games where I'm not sure a remake is even needed. M1 and 2 both had heavily restricted/archaic design and while you could say the same on a few things in super, it holds up amazingly well even now.

What always scares me of a Super Metroid remake, and I feel is something people don't really talk too much about, so maybe that's just me, is the game losing what made it special. Recent 2D metroids pride themselves in crafting an agile, fast-paced, tight controlled Samus that wrecks through enemy forces. They have also worked towards making the games so accesible, you have to actively seek to get lost instead of getting lost naturally. Those two things would hurt Super Metroid, I feel, as the game seeks to let the player get lost and figure things out on their own. You're Samus, a lone bounty hunter in a hostile planet she once called home. Observe the walls, the vegetation, the strange alien environments, the local wildlife. Take the atmosphere, the music in slowly. It's a slow, methodical approach that the Prime games ran with later on, as well. So, seeing as how Zero Mission, Samus Returns and Dread made the controls super tight and agile while depicting the more badass, superhuman side of Samus, and the structure more restricted, as in more linear, less room for getting lost, it also made you lose on that slow, methodical and immersive approach. The game also has aged insanely well visually, as opposed to Metroid 1 and 2, so a remake is not as necessary as their predecessors, I feel.

  • @MidanMagistrate

I'm gonna be honest, the reason why Nintendo won't ever make a Super remake is because it doesn't need to be made. Super is still playable, it still holds up to modern standards, hell the speedrunning scene for it is still very alive. It's not like Metroid 1 or Metroid 2 which were very dated when their remakes were made.

But it seemed like around that time everyone wanted to remake METROID II or something to do with SR388. There's another lost fan project called Metroid: SR-388 and about all I can find of it here on UA-cam is a trailer uploaded by Rivalseeker. I'm guessing the game was never finished because there are no playthroughs whatsoever.

That said, it's of course sad if a project like this gets abandoned, whatever the reason may be. But I think there's hope it may get revived once again. If someone works on something for years and doesn't mind taking a long break, then doing that again seems reasonable to me.

I was the programmer for the demo seen in the "Welcome" blogpost, I think it was 2009 or so... Yeah, I was around (12?) at the time and I loved Metroid, so I figured I'd learn Game Maker as I went along. It was some of the worst programming you've ever seen, I didn't even understand the concept of state machines. Every input was basically 50 lines of "if standing forward left, run forward left" with 10 additional keyboard checks for aiming direction. I used Plunder to upload everything, and that site is long gone so I don't have the files anymore.

The first demo came around in 2008 from a guy named Octohunter. I vaguely remember it being a very, VERY poorly cobbled together mess with like 20 different power ups all enabled from the start. The collisions were extremely finicky and it was impossibly choppy. Just landing on the ground caused you to freeze or get stuck. There was a "sticky beam" upgrade that allowed you to grapple to any surface. It worked terribly and got me stuck in walls.

  • @apollolux
    @apollolux Рік тому +2

It’s harder to justify a Super Metroid GBA-style remake than a Metroid or Metroid 2 one mainly because graphically and sonically it still holds up even if the gameplay is a bit stiffer than later entries. After the release of Fusion, Zero Mission was a thing partly because there wasn’t any new 2D Metroid being released for a long while and partly to bring original Metroid in line with Super and Fusion artistically and thematically. AM2R only happened because Nintendo sat on remaking Metroid 2 for long enough that fans literally got tired of waiting for a Zero Mission-like remake and did it themselves before Nintendo started Samus Returns. A Super Metroid remake can’t look and feel like Fusion, Zero Mission, AM2R, or a GBA update of Super because it’s already good enough that it doesn’t need to - it basically has to look and feel like Dread if it’s gonna be worth doing. Which is probably why all Super remakes to this point have failed - they’ve probably correctly come to this realization and stopped because they haven’t been doing that.

    • @Jetter06
      @Jetter06  Рік тому +1

First and most importantly, thank you for your comment and perspective!
however I definitely have to disagree with your take on this.
I hardly believe that the reason these projects to remake super Metroid failed was because they thought if it wasn't as good as dread then there was no point. I personally think that is rather silly. I mean we already "technically" have a zero mission fan remake of Super known as super Metroid GBA edition and it shows how awesome Super could be with the physics and style of Zero/AM2R. There is also the very important topic of preference, I respect and love Super Metroid but its a game I personally hardly come back to, where games like AM2R and Zero are titles that I jump back into on the regular, I even speed run AM2R in my free time because that's just my preference. Another very important aspect of a remake is its style, and as good as Dread and Samus Returns is, the 2.5D aesthetic leaves a lot to be desired, pixel art has a way better time being more artistic and expressive, and if you compare Zero and AM2R's environments and style to Dread's you'll see a clear difference, yes Dread fundamentally looks great but artistically it seems rather drab, Samus returns is even worse in this aspect. But besides that, Super metroid is nearly 20 years old and we have a far better tech now that can give Super's world far more life, yes it looks great as it is but that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, if the devs of Super had access to the tech we have now I HIGHLY doubt they would have made Super with the aesthetic that they did, they probably would have made a world like Dread or AM2R
I find it rather silly that you cant make a remake because the original is already "perfect" and trying to say that a remake would have to be identical to the original just shackles people and there creativity all because of some over protective nostalgia.
Now I'm not saying Super isn't good, it is nearly perfect, but it does have flaws that most people ignore, weather that's for nostalgic reasons or just personal bias. A remake could add so much to super, new mechanics and items, new areas and bosses, adding passive scanning which could add lore and flavor text which rom hacks have already done for Super, TLDR it could expand Super's already grand world into an even better one!
And on a final note, many of these Super Metroid projects existed WAY before dread was even announced so trying to attribute there ceased development to a game that only recently came out is just wrong in my opinion. Many of these projects failed either because of loss of motivation, life circumstances and other factors. and there are projects right now that are attempting to remake super and they have a whole lot of promise, and not one of them ( at least as far as I could tell from there devlogs ) even referenced dread as a point of concern.
But with all that said that is just my own take on it and I respect your perspective! Thank you again for the comment and have a great day!

@@Jetter06 It's fair to disagree. I only use Dread as an explicit reference because it's the latest both in release and chronologically in the timeline (i.e. after Super), otherwise stylistically I'd likely be referencing Samus Returns even though I'd rather reference a game that would take place after Super.
You mention the Zero Mission hack, but there is an exponential difference in the amount of effort it takes to do the thing in a ROM hack vs making a fangame from scratch like AM2R did. If the goal was just "Super Metroid in GBA style/with GBA improvements," then the Zero Mission hack should've been more than satisfactory, and I agree it looks and sounds great for a GBA ROM hack.
I never made any claims that Super was "perfect," though I did indeed say "good enough" _compared to the GBA-style games._ There are certainly room for improvements in Super that stuff like the Zero Mission hack handled, but again being based off an existing GBA Metroid does most of the heavy lifting here that would otherwise have to be made from scratch in a non-hack fangame. I was mainly trying to say that because Super Metroid had already set such high standards of not just graphics, audio, and gameplay in the Metroid series, but also the combo of the three that after THIRTY YEARS the only way "modern audiences" would accept a fan-made remake is if technologically the effort was put in to make it look and feel like a "modern" game like Dread rather than just "slightly updated" graphics and sound like the Zero Mission hack or an AM2R-style remake.
Older audiences are fine with the original Super or the Zero Mission hack, even if there are genuinely things that need improvement or QoL things that get solved by ROM hacks or similar patches (the Super Metroid Randomizer in particular has some sweet QoL fixes for the SNES version like better weapon cycling with the shoulder buttons). This isn't even taking into account my own personal philosophy on remakes/remixes.

This reminder just makes me sad how much Nintendo neglects the Metroid franchise but floods every facet of their existence with Mario. Forcing us to cling to the tidbits of games in the genre of Metroidvania (which seems to be unfortunately slipping into becoming Rouguelikes.)

  • @TonyStarkCLC

There's something about SM that forbids it's remaking.
SM is pure, unadulterated storytelling without the need to utilize extended dialogues (save for the beginning, and it was straightforward and to the point). It's the perfect speedrunning game. It has the atmosphere, the music, the tension, the pressure, the anxiety, the joy, the sadness... It has everything.
Trying to improve upon the original is a titanic task, which not even Nintendo has dared to do, because irs gonna be incredibly difficult, if not impossible to achieve, while keeping the essence and magic of the original untouched. Even Mercury Steam won't dare to do that, because it's gonna be an hour-and-a-half game with Dread graphics, and that's gonna be honestly a waste of time and efort, unless they create an entirely new experience without using the blueprint of the original (or else, you'll know what to do or where to go, and that'll ruin the new experience), an unprecedentedly enlarged game that justifies the fifty bucks it's probably gonna cost us. The story won't impress us like it did back in 1994 (they can only make it prettier). The poignant cutscene of the Baby sacrificing itself in order to save you from M.B won't shock us the same way it did back then. The Ridley battle won't be the same. The little draygons burying their mother/father won't have the same impact as it did back then. It would only appeal to modern audiences (which are already choosing between dozens of other games), but to us veterans (the ones who loved the OG SM), will only serve as a revival of the nostalgia factor.
The original was so perfect, we honestly don't need an update, and Nintendo knows it, they know it so much, they don't even know where to begin when it comes to potentially remaking SM.
But we don't really know what the future will have stored for us. Maybe we'll receive a surprise by the end of the Switch's life cycle, or the Switch2's beginning.

    Some things:
    1. Metroid is NOT a Metroidvania. Metroid is Metroid. I've said it before and I'll say in again: claiming Metroid is a metroidvania is like saying Rouge is a Rouge-like.
    2. Castlevania did NOT help define what a Metroidvania is. Castlevania is notable for being the game that popularized the idea of applying SM's formula to a different IP.
    3. ZM and SR are great games, but they are not great remakes. A great remake should at least _try_ to capture the spirit of the original for the sake of preservation, not build a completely new game off of its basic foundation. That's called a re-imagining.
    And lastly:
    4. Super. Metroid. Does. Not. Need. A. Remake.

Neither Zero Mission nor AM2R are "definitive remakes". They change a lot of the core design and approach of the original games and are basically completely new games: whether they're better or worse off for it is arguable, but nobody calls Super a remake of Metroid (NES), despite having a lot of surface level similarities. One thing about Metroid 2 in particular that stands out is the direction and atmosphere: it's probably one of the more Western film-inspired Metroid games, and this can be seen with how both the organic areas and the mysterious structures are distinct from the first game or what came later, also seen in the enemy designs. AM2R gets rid of that entirely and goes for a mix of Zero Mission and Super, with the structures and technology being replaced with "lol chozo tech and statues" and the ambience-esque music of the original being replaced with new Prime-style compositions and rearrangements.

The connections with prime are actually shown pretty nicely in samus returns, because the final boss (proteus ridley, i believe its called) is just wearing leftover armor from his time as meta ridley. That armor was likely destroyed in the battle with samus and the baby.

Considering you see the end credits of a hornoad messing with the detached armor before being X'd I believe it plus it would make so much sense when you face off Ridley it would still have some of energy as some of the damage might of been negated by the armor and Ridley doesn't exactly fight you for long in Ceres station which actually makes sense in hindsight as that Ridley wouldn't attempt to fight Samus after a defeat and recharge in lower Norfair for a more proper and prepared fight

For that, you have to look at Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and the followup Castlevania games. We called them "Metroidvanias" because they abandoned what Castlevania games had been prior and became more like Metroid. Thus, Metroidvanias.

Translating the look and feel of SM to a higher fidelity of visuals is difficult. Settling for conventional methods used for most games would inevitably affect its style i think. SM is so liked in its visual, auditory and mechanical presentation for a specific reason, and any change must be in resonance with the original to capture what SM is. Where to lay the computational resources for a look that, if one made a course grained version of it something quite similar to actual SM game should be recovered . An image with its downsampled version is like a remaster of a game with worse temporal/spatial resolution. Its an artistic choice how constant values should be "recovered" but too often it is done naively. would be interesting to see a try but i feel it will only happen once in a life time and should be done right. in any case SM will always be there I guess.
