  • Comparison of different Fylde models, all fitted with D'addarrio phosphor bronze strings. Same fingerpicked and strummed piece played on each for comparison. Recorded with Zoom HD2 camcorder, not pro gear! Remember that when comparing with other videos - obviously, anything recorded in a studio will sound different.......The idea behind this vid is to show how the various Fylde models sound compared to each other, not to other makes. If you're considering buying as Fylde (Stop considering - just get it!!) they are a very good company to deal with; you actually get to talk to the boss. Btw, I am not connected with Fylde in any way - I just like them. For further pictures/info, check out Cruelfolk.com. If you'd like to see some of them played a bit more, see 'Fylde guitars acoustic blues ideas'. Enjoy.

    A concise and informative video. Really helpful despite the limitations of the medium to communicate the first hand sound experience. Thanks for playing the same thing throughout. Lovely playing and a beautiful collection.

    Hi Pete, Just saw this, and it is a real service. I'm left handed myself, so will never get the chance to play these before I buy, but hearing them back to back, in spite of sound quality issues, is a big help, so thanks. At the moment I'm veering towards a Falstaff. Thanks for doing this, Cheers, Rob

      You' re welcome. The Falstaff is probably the best all-rounder, which is why I bought that one first.

      @@peteholden7944 Thanks, Pete, you are a real Fylde collector! What's the neck profile like? I currently have a Martin J40 which I like and has what they refer to as a 'low profile neck' - not like an electric, but definitely not a handful either, Cheers, Rob

      @@robertnewell5057 They're mostly fairly slim, more a 'D' than a 'C' cross section. The Alexanders would normally be 43mm wide at the nut, but I like a wider board, so mine are 45mm. Fylde generally will allow for small changes to orders. The Falstaff is about 22mm deep, all along the neck. Not sure if you could ask for this to be changed or not - certainly for a custom order, but maybe not for a stock guitar. Worth asking directly though; I've always found them very helpful, and you can usually talk to the boss.

      @@peteholden7944 Thanks again, Pete. I'm in contact with Roger Bucknall by email and phone, and he' suggesting I come up and have a look since Falstaffs have changed a bit over the years. However, it's a long way from Devon to Penrith, and I never found 'feeling' a RH guitar neck gave me any idea what an LH one would play like, so I'll probably just order. Appreciate your time and help. Cheers

    Shame you only had 10s on the Oberon, didn't do the guitar justice with those extra light strings, They sound so much better with 12s

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for taking the time to produce this comparison of Fylde guitars. This is something that is missing from UA-cam and I think is needed for the Fylde brand. It is easy to find demo's of the main stream brands on line but not for Fylde. The frustrating thing is it is practically impossible to compare the guitar types at the dealers as they are rarely available for sale and certainly never available to do any kind of comparison. I’m not sure if this would be possible at the Fylde workshop either as a quick look at the website will demonstrate there are only one or two standard guitars available at any one time.
    I have a Fylde Alchemist which I think sounds great, however I would love to compare it to its big brother “the Magician “. I want to know how they compare through the range of tones and perhaps how different playing styles affect the sound that both guitars produce. If in the future I was to purchase for example a Magician I would have part with my Alchemist first. But in the absence of a ready made comparison it is not an easy road to go down.

    • @peteholden7944
      @peteholden7944  9 років тому +1

      Hi Mark, I've never played an Alchemist but the thing that stands out to me with the Magician is it's huge bass - strong, but not muddy nor overpowering. I imagine your best bet would be to take your Alchemist to a shop that stocks a Magician to compare. Btw, one thing I have noticed is that all guitars sound different when you're behind them, playing them to what they do when you're in front of them, listening to someone else............

    • @countrymanb2109
      @countrymanb2109 9 років тому +1

      Thanks Pete,
      I assumed the Magician would have a good base and that’s the sound I would like.
      But there are no dealers in easy travelling distance, if anywhere in the UK, with a Magician for sale. This is why I think it would be great if Fylde were to put a musician in a studio with a selection of their guitars producing a like for like comparison. I’m aware that Fylde can’t produce their guitars fast enough to meet demand so maybe they just don’t need to do anything like this but if they did it would be cool.
      Until then I will keep an eye out. We have a very good store in Manchester, UK called Forsyths which is where I got my Alchemist from the other two stores are in Scotland.
      All the best.

    • @peteholden7944

      They're a sort of shallow V profile. I like a fairly wide board, so they're all 45 or 46mm at the nut. Well fretted, so the action can be very low.

    Hello Pete, I just got a Fylde Ariel Single Malt and I think it's a wonderful guitar. But I keep asking myself, how the sound differs from a regular Ariel? Did you ever have the chance to compare those two guitars?

    • @peteholden7944
      @peteholden7944  9 років тому +1

      I can, if you are still getting noticifcations. I just got a 1984 2nd hand and it is a very open sounding guitar, very balanced across he strings and fingerboard with lots of sustain especially high up the fingerboard, where the treblrd are not thin. @@peteholden7944

    Couldnt see the head stocks of any of them. Would have been useful to have heard the tone in different positions up the fret board. beautiful instruments, even when played like a banjo!!

    • @peteholden7944
      @peteholden7944  9 років тому +2

      Robin Wright Not sure if you mean I played them all like a banjo, or just the country licks..............Anyway, I positioned the camera to show the bulk of each one, but in hindsight should've done full shots also, given that they do have differing headstocks. As for the tone, I tried to just record the tone of each identically, for comparison between models, concentrating on the basic sound rather than on the finer points. Maximum of 15 minutes, after all.

They really are superb instruments´ A good friend of mine, David Buckingham recommended them to me. Have you heard him play. Thanks again Pete. Do you come from Norfolk?
