I own a Z9 and a Z6II. I use my cameras to do a lot of video work. Replacing the Z6II by the Z6III was a huge improvement. To be honest, the Z6III is becoming my main video camera. This week end, I was on trip with my motorcycle, took the Z6III and I was not disapointed by the quality of the photos. This is a very very good photo or video camera.
I bought a Nikon Z6III when it was on sale late last year. Used it to replace my aging half beat to death cosmetically Z6II that I had for almost for years. I use it for event work, it's the back up body to my Z9 and it's been doing that well so far. Glad I bought it.
I have been in the z system a while now. I currently have a z6ii and z6iii. I traded in my z7ii to get the z6iii because of better low light, and better auto focus because I found myself not doing as much landscape or astro and doing mostly portraits. Also not as much larger printing. With programs allowing us to now expand the pixels if needed, this was a no brainer for me and has been amazing. I also have a 24-70 F4 S, 85mm 1.8 S, and 105 mm 2.8 macro, which are all stellar. I've been shooting Nikon for 10 years and have loved every piece of gear.
One of the best reviews I have ever come across..
none bias
Minimal tech bs but a down to earth review 👍🏼
Just a point to note..
All amateur photographers, you have to learn to shoot full frame, sans the cropping..
During my days as a professional photographer, we only crop our images when we shoot on Hasselblads or the larger formats..
But never on 35mm
Use the right lens for the right purpose.
I was appreciative of comparisons to the Z50ii. That camera has blown me away, especially when I'm using manual focus lenses.
Excellent review!!!
I love my Z6III. It was a weird road to get it. I initially got a Zf, and loved it, but in the end, I traded it for the Z6III. I shot Fuji for 7 years. XT2, XT3, and finally, the XT5. A few months ago, I sold my XT5 and all my Fuji lenses and got a very lightly used Zf with less than 500 clicks. I also got the 40f2, the 50 1.8S and the 85 1.8S. After using the Zf on a couple of paid shoots, I was sold. The auto focus was light years ahead of any Fuji. The Expeed 7 processor is insanely fast. The Zf is just a beautiful camera to behold. But for me, after 3 months, I decided that the Zf was perfectly imperfect. It just felt imbalanced to me. Even with the small rig grip (which is great) it felt awkwardly heavy. Without it, the Zf just felt front heavy, especially with zooms, but even with any S prime. Great with the 40 or 28 SE lenses, not great with zooms or heavier primes.
And not being able to have aperture clicks on native Z lenses was crazy to me. The PASM dial on the retro body seemed half baked. I missed the true exposure triangle of my XT5.
So, heavy hearted, I sold the Zf and bought the Z6III. I’m still having a lot of growing pains within the Nikon system and when I can afford it, I’ll probably pick up the ZF again. It’s just a fantastic camera.
Now I shoot with my Z6III (head) and Fuji X100V (heart).
Nikon is amazing. I’m a portrait and headshot photographer in Los Angeles, who was entirely Fuji for over eight years. Now I am fully sold on Nikon.
If I had the money I would absolutely have the Zf AND the Z6III. Head and heart. But for now, I’m using the Z6III and loving its ergonomics, incredible EVF and crazy AF speed, but I’m missing my Zf. I’ll get it back one day.
The Z6III is a Zf in a modern body with a few tweaks and better video. The Z8 and Z9 seem incredibly good, but coming from Fuji, WAY too heavy for my 53 year old back to carry. Heck, if I could, I would shoot everything on a X100! Maybe after I reacquire my Zf I’ll get a Z50II? Ha! I’m weighing my options, literally and figuratively.
Seriously though, I love my Z6III, and my X100V scratches my retro itch. I’ll probably get a Z50II next, which is like a mini Z6III. The Z6III & Z50II is the combo that can tackle anything.
Nikon ftw.
The battle between ZF and Z6 III is still not over in my head. I'll wait a few more months, I hope I'll be wiser by then haha.
Zf best for stills and cheaper, Z6iii better for video
@@mjr333both stills and video are fine for me, as I use the camera for hobby not work. I like the look and dial on ZF, but the grip and EVF seems to be much nicer on Z6 III
@@mjr333 just a shame I get a headache whenever I imagine casually picking up the zf due to the grip or lack thereof. It’s the sort of camera you need to have with the strap constantly around your neck which isn’t for everyone
@@mjr333 Z6III is a monster for stills, like anything it comes down to use case. I have both, the Zf is my easy daily carry and the Z6III (with grip) for higher-requirement subjects like sports / action. Having both a mechanical and (useable / fast) electronic shutter is a huge advantage. Both cameras are amazing at stills in their own way, but yes the Z6III has advantages on the video side.
@@18yearsoldnot Zf is kind of a niche body, I absolutely love it but yes the SmallRig grip is permanently attached for me (all my bodies have either a vertical grip, or L-bracket anyway). That said, it's very useable without the grip with the 50 1.8 or smaller up front.
Just upgraded my Z6 for the Z6iii. Can't wait to stretch its legs a bit. I'm also upgrading from F-mount glass via F2Z to native Z mounts. First up is the 24-70 f2.8 S. I think this combo will be my go-to kit.
I own a D800 dslr and still remember the product review of that by you. I am glad to find the same friendly and elaborate approach even today. Thank you and Raymond.
Thank you for watching!
Z8, Z6ii(astro mod), Z6iii and when it goes on sale the Z50ii. It’s been a fun and wild ride with Nikon. Can’t wait for more.
I find it interesting that the Z50II was mentioned in this video. I bought the Z50II and it is fantastic! Shortcomings?...ya...every camera has a few...so what, as long as the core values fit your requirement, then, use your noodle to work around any shortcomings. The Z6III is awesome but it won't replace my Z6II. Great video as always Leigh...cheers!
thanks for showing the editing. I need to learn to use my tools
I am still a happy Z6I user and I am shooting landscapes with does not require a fast AI based autofocus system. At the beginning I was concerned about the specs but as a more mature photographer I do not care so much anymore. For me it is more about the handling of the camera. Do you like the usability, the viewfinder etc.. A thing of the Z6III that I do not like so much is the flippy screen. Maybe I am there a little old fashioned. I would prefer the screen of the Z8 with the weight of the Z6 :) . I do print on a size of a range from about A2 to A0 and the resolution of a Z6 is good enough for me. No concerns about that. I do give a full recommendation for any landscape photographer for the Z system. Be aware that the Z24-70/4 lens is stunning and for landscape you do not need the Z24-70/2.8 which is very expensive. Buy the f4 version maybe used. This spares a lot of money as it is used very cheap.
I bought the Z6III to replace the Z50 as my second camera. This was before I knew the Z50II was coming. Either way, I am happy with my purchase.
I have the Z6III, and I love it. It’s an excellent camera for both stills and video. The Z50 looks like a decent camera but lacks IBIS and a joystick. Another central point to consider is that Nikon neglects the lenses for the DX format. Lastly, for the Z6III, my only complaints are that it needs a shutter angle, dual card recording, and a way to record externally to an SSD similar to the Lumix S5IIX.
I switched from Fuji to the Z6-3 because of autofocus. I am so happy with the Z6-3 because it’s the right fit for me when it comes to speed, image quality and colors. So far I did not miss more megapixels and I am absolutely blown away by the high iso performance even in low light. I only need AI denoising in extreme conditions.
Thanks for the excellent work in the past years! Im a „still“ Nikon d750 owner! As I travel a lot, the Z50 II is a good entry! Need something smaller! It has the speed aso and the Z7II is getting cheaper. So perfect for me! Greetings from The Blackforrest/Hochrhein!
Thank you for watching!
Hi, I've Nikon Z72-Z63 with two quantity 24-70 F2.8 S lenses and Zfc. I really love it Z72 because high MP etc. To be honest I never tried and did not check about z63 but I bought this body as affordable price. My opinion is Z63 is better on videography but z72 is better on photography. As I who loves high megapixels, Z63 sometimes does not satisfy me in photography like z72. But Z63 raw(nef) format is amazing.
It's a shame the Z50 II doesn't have IBIS, and there aren't enough appropriate lenses for it. I certainly have no issue with APS-C (I actually shoot Micro Four Thirds), but you have to have a good ecosystem of lenses for it to make sense. And stabilization would be very helpful
Interesting review. I have a couple of questions. Using a lens like the 24-120, does the Z6iii display the focal length or are you stuck between flower and mountain, not know the exact focal length? At apertures below f/5.6, do you have to use the DOF preview to check focus? Does the Z6iii have focus stacking?
Z6 III?
Great review, thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
I take mostly stills….I think, other than erogonmics, I don’t need a Nikon Z6 III…..so why do I want it so badly?
Nice review both of you........ although the Z6ii does not fit my use case. For me the Z9 is the camera of choice (and I shoot almost 100% stills and 90% animals). Having 2 cards slots sounded good till I realized one of them was an SD card. So when you write to both cards it defaults to the speed of the SD card which slows downs the buffer significantly vs a Z9 [think 200mb/s with an SD card vs 1000mb/s or faster with just a CF Express Card]. In fact in my 1 days of test shooting with it at a zoo (and writing to both cards) I had the buffer fill on me several times, drop out the SD card and had no buffer issues in same shooting conditions. Also animal AF although it works fairly good on the Z6iii it is not a snappy as on the Z9 espdcially for darker mammals and primates ( so if your shooting 80%+ animals keep this in mind). But with all that said the Z6iii would make a good back-up to the Z9 when traveling and you can't afford or make 2 larger Z9s fit in your carry-on bag. Its a nice camera just not the best choice for my use case.
I purchased the Z6III as a backup to my Z9.
That’s a great pairing :)
Just traded a Z9 to a PJ pal for a Z6III and cash. I’m getting away from weddings, and a lighter kit and battery commonality wit my Z8 makes sense.
The only issue with the Z50ii is the battery, for that reason I'm waiting for a Z70/Z90 that uses the EN-EL15 battery ??? can only hope....
I am SO curious where Nikon will go with the DX portion of the system.
As a new-in-the-game event photographer coming from Fuji, I like the look of the Zf but the 6III seems like a better choice for the full card slots and grip. Any thoughts?
I think it’s personal preference here. As much as I love the Zf, I’d probably prefer the Z6III over the Zf for event photography because it’s easier to hold onto. Either body would do the job though.
My ONLY reason for skipping the Z6 iii and Zf is an obsession with open gate anamorphic i get with my LUMIX S1. Also the rumors of inferior dynamic range on Z6 III.
Nikon z 6 3 vs nikon z 7 2, They both are the same price now, which one is better no to get??
They’re both great bodies. If you are a fan of pixel peeping or heavy cropping, the Z7II is probably the way to go. If not, the Z6III is wonderful!
i don't want to be one of these people who is always waiting for the latest gear. this camera is pure overkill for me - I really don't care too much about the video tools here. i have a d750 and i want to go mirrorless. i'm hoping that nikon will bring out a z5ii.anyway, thank you for posting this video :)
I got a z5, sold it but regret it - it is a great camera for Leica m lenses - fantastic even. I never got the z lenses though… so my advise would be don’t feel pressured to get a Nikon just because you have f lenses, as the ftz adapter is very very bulky and offsets the weight making a z body with an f lens feel way heavier than your f lens on a dslr. If you have vintage glass stay with Nikon, but if you don’t, wait to see what canon does with its retro camera coming out this year apparently
I agree - if you’re happy with your camera or don’t see what you’re looking for, stick with what you have! I’m curious if there will be an update to the Z5 as well.
Brilliant video. I have a nikon z6ii, I do loads of different type of photography, but my passion is landscape and im considering upgrading to the z6iii as it has 8 stop of stabilization and if I pair it with a z 24-200 vr I was hoping to ditch carrying a heavy tripod for longexposure . Does anybody have any experience with zf or the z6iii with hand held longexposure?
Paul😊
Good review! I just want a true pro level DX body to replace my D500..I shoot raptors in flight almost 100% of the time , so the crop factor is needed..
There are a lot of folks that agree with you! The Z50II is a great body but it isn’t super duper fast like the D500.
@LeighAndRaymond true! I'm not burning on the Z50ii but it's just not for me..I like a big, heavy camera that is weather sealed with killer AF. If Nikon would make a DX body with an integrated battery grip, the Z8's AF and even use the 20.9mp sensor, I bet they would fly off the shelves at $2500+ ..
If you do the math, the D500 has a 7% higher pixel density than a Z8, so 20.9mp is plenty!
Note to self: Must visit Sedona soon.
Purchased but returned...Great camera but didn't have that "distinguishing feature or look" that was going to make it find a way into my bag against my other bodies. Cheers!
Did you try video?
I'd get one if I had the money.
As a Canon shooter (R6 MkII) I see absolutely no reason to switch to Nikon. In my experience Canon offers the more practical system.
This is why I tell people to try to get a camera in their hands in a shop prior to purchasing. We all have different wants and needs. Thanks for your comment!
Canon has great camera bodies but their lens selection is their Achilles heel. Your options are massively huge and expensive or a little smaller, flawed and still expensive.
Loved my canon r6. Auto focus was great as well as image quality. It fit well in my small hands. Loved having triple back button focus. I mainly shoot birds/wildlife and canon doesn’t have any “affordable” telephoto lenses. Yes the releases the 200-800, but got tired of waiting for it to be in stock. Now I shoot z8 and 180-600. Thinking of getting the 600 or 800
But are you going to buy one? I Think Not.... 📷📷📷
No, I have the Z7, Z9 and Z50II, so we don’t need the Z6III. I think it’s a great body. If we only used Nikon, we’d probably add this to our collection.
@@LeighAndRaymond - Hi! I also have a Z7, Z9 and a Z30. I bought the Z30 with the Creator kit thinking I was going to use it for my monthly Zoom meetings, but it did not work out. It overheated more than once. I now use the OSMO Pocket 3 for my meetings and it works great.
I know you have/had a Z30, and I, like Raymond have an issue using it outdoors due to the lack of a view finder. The Sunlight obilterates the lcd. I am pondering whether to sell the Z30 and go for a Z50-II.
Thank you for your videos, I enjoy following you. BTW, I have been a Nikon shooter for 50 years!
I have a Z6iii and find its colours horrible when shooting neon signs at night, especially reds. The neon is overexposed. To expose the proper colour for the neon lights you have to way underexpose everything else.
That is strange. Were you shooting at Base ISO and in manual exposure mode? I enjoy shooting Neon signs in my city at night. I did not have any issues with editing the raw files from the Z6iii.
@@williambuford6136 Handheld shots manual mode auto ISO. Shot with a 35mm f1.8 at 1.8 and ISO 800. My iPhone 16 pro max nailed the colours and exposure when shooting with similar composition. The Nikon overexposed the neon to properly expose the rest of the screen.
I tried the same shot in auto mode just to see what the camera would come up with and the neon was still overexposed. Could fix in NX Studio but I shouldn’t have to.
The Z6iii is fairly new to me so will do another comparison later in the week with my Z50.
