Lets not forget this is the first step into the new 992 platform. Porsche have even said that the new 911 in standard and S formats is more GT focused than before. If you want track focused you'll have to wait for the GT3/2 or GTS. Personally I love the idea of a track car but actually use my car more for long roadtrips and UK B/A road driving which is why I ordered a 2S (currently counting the days to delivery).

I don’t get this. Why would someone care for fuel consumption in a car that’s meant to be driven spiritually? A Tesla for the weekdays, and a fun car with a beautiful symphony from the exhaust on the weekend = problem solved. You get the best of both worlds, instead of a boring, down-sized mediocre car.

I disagree. 1 trick ponies that are amazing at 1 thing get boring really fast. Sure, it's cool to have an amazing quality in your back pocket, but it does not matter if you can do, let's say, a 9 second quarter mile at 160 mph if that is your 1 amazing quality. You can really only exploit the "amazing" trick within very slim parameters and very strict conditions for your own safety and others. A 911 is a great over achiever at many things. It will take you years of enjoyment and exploration to discover the many layers of greatness the 911 has. Not only on the street, but also on the track. I have been a Porsche owner for 20 years and some of the oldest Porsches I still own are because I still enjoy how great they are at everything ;^)

Matt, it would be nice if there was track telemetry on both the 911 and the C8 test drives so we could determine speed/g-force, etc. You appeared to be driving more cautiously in the 911 than in the C8. Just my observation. Then again, Porshe did give you unprecedented access to their cars in Germany and the US, so I'm not certain how unbiased your review can be.
Phil Rhodes Travis did all the telemetry laps for Performance Car of the Year and the telemetry will be in the story. There is no benefit to me to have telemetry, only drawbacks.
Least excitement I’ve seen in a UA-cam piece about a “great car “ in a long time. This is why the grand sport best the 991 in motor trends comparison...911 is fantastic but if you l crave drama you need a GT3 or to look elsewhere
are you gonna talk about the C8's dyno results ? seems fishy, like the good old ferrari tricks with press cars given a hotter tune and then say its just pre production, honestly i see it as false advertising, especially if the production car will have the advertised power, motor trend got more that the advertised crank power to the wheels, i hope you discuss it in the tst crew podcast
$140k. More than half the cost of my house. The C8 is the everyman sports car that punches above its weight to be considered in the same class as this Carrera S that costs double the money.
Miguel Flores One of the comparisons said the C8’s interior was better than the 911. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still rather have the 911. www.motortrend.com/cars/chevrolet/corvette/2020/2020-chevrolet-corvette-c8-vs-2020-porsche-911-comparison-test-review/
I mean, this is a sports car costing 130k. It's not a realistic comparison. M cars are all about the engine these days, but they cant compete with the precision of a true sports car.
Noah B get the z06 c8 and use the 50k for a dd. I guess it depends on your situation. If you have a family choose the option I said but if it’s just you or you and your gf the 992 doesn’t seem like a bad idea
In the C8 you seemed to be much more giddy driving it than this. How much of that was excitement for finally driving a mid engine vette vs the car being genuinely more fun? Also I am assuming the vette was more fun at least based on your reaction.
Jose Lopez 100 percent of it was giddy at there being an actual mid engined vette that doesn’t suck. 911’s are very familiar and I had just spent a whole week in one. So it’s all careful analysis here. 911 is definitely more fun to drive once you get over vette’s newness, and at that price, it better be.
OK, which is better, this 2020 992Carrera S, or the 2018 manual 991.2 Carrera T? Glad you got Michelin shod cars, and not had to put up with them GoodYears.
Nord Mann Hi Nord. What really is the question? Those cars are totally different. No car really is "the best". It all depends on what you are looking for. For one of my friends the best car is the one that is the fastest from 1 to 60 even though it has a tiny significance on what he uses his cars for. For me the best car is the one that starts and has very little hp so I can beat on it without losing my license. How would we ever know what would be best for you?
Jonas Rosenven the question is which is the best drivers car? That’s a legit question. Which one thrills the most, and puts the biggest smile on your face, and I’m not talking about mundane commute to work. Manual 991.2CT or 992S?
watching this 4 years later....and 911S has jumped to near 991.2 gt3 prices or new lightly optioned 992S are like 165k! and 992 gt3's have jumped to Ferrari prices? great cars, but not drinking that lemonade.
You were NOWHERE near as giddy with delight as when you drove the Vette... that pretty much says it all. I've been a German car snob for 25 years. Not only did I order a C8, it's also the first time EVER that I'm paying sticker price...for an American car at that... I'm in the twilight zone!!!
theclutch I had driven the Porsche for a full week and 1500 miles before this test. It was old hat by now. I hadn’t so much as seen the new vette until 5 mins before the test. I made it very very clear in that video to not read too much into the excitement of a new thing and in fact to pay closer attention to what I said after.
@@TheSmokingTire yes, I know... you were back pedaling... lol... it's ok, you can admit it and we will not think any less of you. I love the passion. A Tesla for the weekdays, and a fun car with a beautiful symphony from the exhaust on the weekend = problem solved. You get the best of both worlds, instead of a boring, down-sized mediocre car.
@@jgripen969 To know how long I can drive spiritually sweetheart. ;)
LOOKING GOOD MATT!!!!
Yeah, I like your videos man... Not bad, not bad... If I waited for the RX-9 to come out of production, I would be waiting forever...
Hey I'm sure I missed the chance of a response, but really curious which you prefer- 992S or 992 4S? The 4S was on the tale of the dragon so I'm sure there were good memories there! I'm looking at both. Got a 991.2 right now. Thanks
If a car is great at everything and amazing at nothing, most enthusiasts will get bored of it very easily
Yellow Porsche. Check. Yellow seat belt. Check. Yellow Homer Simpson helmet. Check. Let's go!
Still can’t figure out what that vertical line is in some videos on the windshield...
Antenna?
I know I should be listening to the sponsor plug. However, the "pig chef" holding a chalkboard is just too mesmerizing. I don't want it. I need it.
The reflection of the line in the dashboard is super annoying. Great review Matt!
The image stabilization of the Gopro really don't allow to understand the steering.
Wish they was vertical stabilization only!!
I wanna know the 0-60 on the in-car PiP scaling down to the upper left hand corner of the frame.
I wish it was running Michelins. They all ship on Pirelli or Goodyear. That yellow car has Pirellis I think I’ve seen.
I find the back end on the 911s I have driven will fish tail. My 718 never does that, even under heavy throttle, doing a turn from standing.
What brand boots and model are on your table? I looked though the link and they don’t show any boots as they only show shoes. Thanks for the help.
RYAN GUERCIO they are all Beckett Simonon obviously but the boots are from last year and may not be in production right now. Boots should be available again in next month
Thanks for the info as if I purchase I would like the boots!!
Since you now have driven the new mid engine Corvette and this Carrera S, which do you like better, regardless of the cost?
David Oh Porsche
Driving view is delightful with the rolling terrain and wide views. You are saving me time away from the kids and $ spent flogging my 996.1 manual for gratuitous trips through the nearby Rocky Mtns. Amusingly, watching your vids of the new ones helps me appreciate the old one I can afford to keep well maintained (vs the immense depreciation costs of new ones, but I can imagine “one day....”). Matt, how about a concise list of al the goods you like/advertise. Before I buy something I’ve thought “what would Farah or Lieberman buy”
Which one do you prefer if you were to buy one of these 2 cars, Carrera 992 S or the C8?!
Manny Land Porsche all day
992 because manual (I would wait for the manual but this is just me)
@@ryanguercio7061 992 is Automatic PDK only
Manny Land only for now the manual is coming soon!
How long would a set of brakes last on a track?
Beckett Simonon cut out the middle man so they can get their prices as low as $400 a pair for boots edit: I still ordered a pair but that marketing seems a bit iffy
billiondollardan these boots would easily be $150 more in a store but ok
@@TheSmokingTire I hear ya. I mean I did actually buy a pair, no joke. They're nice. I wonder if they could move the marketing away from value and toward luxury
Is this Matt replying? If so, this isn't the first one I've seen where Matt was kind of a dick. Just don't reply dude. Stay out of the comments section.
When do we get to watch the Road and Track videos or are they just going to be in print?
The Road & Track story is a print story.
Does the 992 plow snow like the C8?
Clearly not
Matt, it would be nice if there was track telemetry on both the 911 and the C8 test drives so we could determine speed/g-force, etc.
We don't question our love of Matt Farah.
@ 8:43 I finally realized it's a homer simpson helmet
Least excitement I’ve seen in a UA-cam piece about a “great car “ in a long time. This is why the grand sport best the 991 in motor trends comparison...911 is fantastic but if you l crave drama you need a GT3 or to look elsewhere
Does the 992 downshift to redline unlike the C8?
Very nice car
Who knew Homer Simpson could slide Porsches on a track?!
are you gonna talk about the C8's dyno results ? seems fishy, like the good old ferrari tricks with press cars given a hotter tune and then say its just pre production, honestly i see it as false advertising, especially if the production car will have the advertised power, motor trend got more that the advertised crank power to the wheels, i hope you discuss it in the tst crew podcast
ssllhh100 The motor trend results are horse shit. Cammisa broke it down nicely on his IG
$140k. More than half the cost of my house. The C8 is the everyman sports car that punches above its weight to be considered in the same class as this Carrera S that costs double the money.
yakapo888 yea except Porsche comes with a GOOD interior. Corvette is fast but lacks in interior fit finish and materials
Miguel Flores
One of the comparisons said the C8’s interior was better than the 911. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still rather have the 911.
www.motortrend.com/cars/chevrolet/corvette/2020/2020-chevrolet-corvette-c8-vs-2020-porsche-911-comparison-test-review/
Crazy how guys like me have a high appreciation for M cars and Matt rarely compares anything to them. Shows how much better there really is out there.
I mean, this is a sports car costing 130k. It's not a realistic comparison. M cars are all about the engine these days, but they cant compete with the precision of a true sports car.
1 992 C2S or 1 C8 Corvette LT1 + 65k daily driver ?
Noah B get the z06 c8 and use the 50k for a dd. I guess it depends on your situation. If you have a family choose the option I said but if it’s just you or you and your gf the 992 doesn’t seem like a bad idea
"Matt Farah is The Joe Rogan of cars"
He’s also the Thanos of cars
so nobody hears the front tires screaming for mercy? 911's DONT understeer, or nobody says that they do?
In the C8 you seemed to be much more giddy driving it than this. How much of that was excitement for finally driving a mid engine vette vs the car being genuinely more fun? Also I am assuming the vette was more fun at least based on your reaction.
Jose Lopez 100 percent of it was giddy at there being an actual mid engined vette that doesn’t suck. 911’s are very familiar and I had just spent a whole week in one. So it’s all careful analysis here. 911 is definitely more fun to drive once you get over vette’s newness, and at that price, it better be.
So glad Smoking Tyre is back.
Those cobwebs give me anxiety 2:43
Came to see the 992, treated to a minute of looking at Brogues.
👑
Outstanding
OK, which is better, this 2020 992Carrera S, or the 2018 manual 991.2 Carrera T?
Glad you got Michelin shod cars, and not had to put up with them GoodYears.
Nord Mann the 992 is excellent if you want a brand new daily. For a weekend treat, get a Carrera T and get it tweaked a bit.
TheSmokingTire I have a Carrera T in my garage. Just wanted your opinion on what is the best drivers car? 991.2CT or 992S?
Nord Mann
Hi Nord.
Black with gold wheels and a red interior
Prefer? This, or the natural aspiration of the 991 Carrera S for driving enjoyment/feel?
watching this 4 years later....and 911S has jumped to near 991.2 gt3 prices or new lightly optioned 992S are like 165k! and 992 gt3's have jumped to Ferrari prices? great cars, but not drinking that lemonade.
Were you as giddy with the 911 the first time you drove it? :) Again, if it was Chevy's goal to pull in new buyers from the European market, well done. You got me. The last and only time I had an American car was 35 years ago! And I still can't believe I'm paying MSRP. I never paid MSRP or over MSRP EVER (not even for my 911 C4S or my Boxster S)!
I’m not interested in commercials/ads.
No stick shift in a Porsche. The king is dead.....
Great video, nice to hear the engine (although it makes it clear that the NA 991.1 sounds a ton better)
