Cole, I’m really glad you had two combines available because you were able to keep going with the Deere after the Case broke down. It’s really interesting to hear your initial impressions of the Deere - I’m grateful to the equipment dealer for letting you demo the combine so we can see what it’s capable of doing.
You can program the button you use to raise the head (1,2,or3) to lower and slide back the reel to bump the beans onto the belt as the head raises so no piles at the end. There are so many little set up/ button programming tricks you can do with the reel and hydo flex it will blow your mind. Once you know it, it’s easy.
I must say I have a whole new appreciation for farmers wherever they are in the world. Thank-you for educating, entertaining and enlightening me. an avid follower from Ontario, Canada.🌽💛

Nice honest first impression on the S790 Cole even though it is 6 years newer. Seems like your getting the hang of the John Deere settings and Kudos to Chet Larson for the help for sure. You can clearly see the Beans popping over the head in today's video, I'm sure that's why The Larsons run the Crary Air bars on both of their combines ..... Saves a bunch of header loss for sure. It really is great that Van Wall has set you guys up to try and compare the Red vs Green on your farm. As always Thank You for bringing us along on your Journeys, See you tomorrow hopefully!
Again, it is so nice that you have each other to keep the farm running. While Cooper works on one, to get it back in the field, Cole is out there knocking out the beans. Nothing is stopped or lost. I think of the John Deere and the Case like Ford and Chevy. They are both the best there is, and each one has something better than the other. Just need to choose what works best for your needs.
I was worried about the same thing. You never know what little thing might happen and you won't have your scalp anymore, and thats if your lucky. Don't worry us mom's.

Hi Cole , glad to see you are getting a chance to run a Deere Combine. If you want to have a different layout on your main screen, you can select the Main menu button (lower right green squares) and select Layout Manager, then you can choose what you want on your Run Pages. Some are Preset from the factory, but you can create your own custom ones from many of the features. The program will give you different sizes of the boxes you can choose from to build up your Run Page. And you can also move them around to suit what you want. Don’t be afraid to have a play with it. You can also touch on some of the boxes on the display, and they will open up to show even more information. Hope you enjoy the rest of your time with it. And yes, a Crary wind system is a must for what you guys harvest. Good luck with the rest of your harvest, from Australia. 👌👍🙂
Hey Cole, Thanks for the thorough walkthrough! We run a MacDon draper, which is basically identical to your Case. You can adjust the draper belt speed using the little lever on the head's main hydraulic block just to the left of the feeder house. There's a little access panel you can flip up.
Cole you do a great job in educating people on farming. My brother runs our family farm and he is amazed at how young you are and the amount of knowledge you have.
Have photos of my dad and his parents in the field in South Dakota with 2 horses pulling a plow . My grandfather built a box for his toddler aged son to sit in on the plow. My dad died at age 97 years and got to see a man on the moon and a computer on the desk. Amazing
Nice features on that combine. It's going to be intresting in regards to your final opinion of the two machines. I enjoyed watching the video, keep up the good work harvesting. Big thumbs up
You mentioned a lot of beans on the ground with the John Deere. The millineal farmer had that problem and someone told him to reset his screens. Watch the last few videos of his bean harvest and he will explain what he did.
Try a Gleaner combine. They have etremely clean samples and are light - weight and easy to repair. I think they will work very well for your operation. Love your videos!
I'm from Iowa. I might be biased- but I really like John Deere, Kinze, Pella Windows, Amana Refrigerators, Vermeer, and Iowa State Fair. Seems like supporting local is a very good thing for us. Casey's, Kum and Go and Hy Vee are good also. Just saying. Buy local when possible.
Hey Cole with the JD, I’d recommend you use the HarvestSmart feature! It limits your speed based of engine load, you’d love it! Also the screens are super customisable, just got to the Layout Manager tab and away you go!
Cole great to see u cutting beans in a green machine u were blessed to have it for demo while cooper is working on your case ih u guys keep farming an I will keep watching
This is fascinating. When you're comparing these, don't forget to take into account the six additional years of technological development on the JD. I'd also add that you added the LED lights to the Case, so it would presumably be pretty easy to upgrade all the JD lights to LEDs as well. What you ARE certainly proving is the worth of the Crary air bar.
More and more technology and electronics can be a double edged sword . Just as a matter of interest my cousin bought one the first IHC axial flow 1460s nearly forty years ago and it is still doing all of his harvesting.
I think the Case ran alot of acres. Like I always hear all colors break. I guess it boils down to parts and dealers and how they take care of you. Obviously John Deere wants to be seen on all the UA-cam Channels. And I think you have a popular channel. Well done.
hey. I'm not into Deer or Case. but I am surprised by the machine. quality, modern, capable, advanced,... I like your unbiased approach. I hope you don't have problems and everything will go as normal. best of luck.
The longer you run the JD the more you will like it 👍 of course I like green paint!! I just see you guys haven't had the best luck with the case since you have had it. I guess bottom line is it's your money do as you wish 👍
It sounds to me like you're having fun with that Big Green incredible hulk machine. If you're not careful you're going to be finished with harvest before you know it.
In the Deere, try Machine Sync. All the grain cart operator has to do is pull alongside the combine, press the AutoTrac resume button in her cab and voila! the grain cart goes to "home" position under the unloader, the combine operator has full control of the left/right and fore-aft position of the grain cart. It's built into the machine, no need to buy aftermarket like Raven Cart Automation. Nor have the mechanical complexity of adjustable spout. Also prevents damage to the header from the grain operator inadvertently steering into the header because she can't see in the dust at night, or is blinded by the sun during the day.
Love the rpm limiter on our 6430. Makes it nice being able to throw the throttle to full when using the pto and not having to worry about a over speed.
i know the grain bin debacle is still ongoing but man i wish you the best of luck getting it figured out and moving on to using it more! all these work arounds to fill other bins seems like such a hassle when you've spent the time and money on a bigger (supposedly) easier solution.
Love watching your videos, a lot of flooding over here in northern Victoria, Australia. A lot of our local farmers have lost majority of their crop, had to relocate livestock and horses, using boats to rescue horses and cattle, it's absolutely insane
My heart jumped when I seen precious Cooper under that loud powerful machine, with his hair blowing. I prayed that God would keep your amazing family safe this harvest season. Great weather, two combines, you are so blessed! Entertaining real life video, thank you again.
Cole, Chet installed some brush kit that goes on the feeder house and prevents beans from being thrown back out. You should ask him about it. they have installed many after market parts just ask him what are his MUST HAVEs for add ons.
I am a John Deere guy and they make a bean saver kit for the heads now. There is a curtain that goes in the opening that keeps a lot of the beans from flying out.
If you have the orange button (near the parking brake) that has an H on one side and a L one the other, that’s how you set your maximum field speed. It only works in first gear and to set the target speed you have to go to “toolbox” (I think) in the PRO700.
Raise feeder house drum to up position, may help with to slugging. Noticed he dropped it down when walking around machine in setup and that is what manual says but most guys around here just leave them up all the time with drapers
Great videos your putting out! Really appreciate all the hard work you farmers do. Thank you so much for being so detailed in your explanation of things.
Nice first impression of the Deere , Nice of Van Wall to let you try out a green machine. Hope you get your combine fixed quickly. Very good video Cole, thanks for sharing.
There are a few you tube farmers that do machinery justice, not a blind faith to one colour. With the JD on the farm I would have thought the local Case dealer would be falling over themselves to have the case combine fixed. I have mentioned before, a few factors for choosing a colour of machinery; Price, resale value, reliability, (perceived and actual reliability). The crunch comes down to the dealer, spare parts, spare machines and quick to react. Often the main factor of equipment is what father had.
I had the amazing fun of a corn field fire in Lake Benton Minnesota yesterday. I ran out of fire extinguisher fluid and had to tap dance in a 30 mile an hour wind trying to keep the fire from the main field. I called the fire department when I started tap dancing fortunately they got here before it burnt the main field. They had a disassembled brand new Wind Tower in the middle of my field I was really worried it would catch $3 million dollars worth of Wind Tower blades and nacelle on fire. The fire was caused by an alternator which had a failed bearing. On Windy days it might be better to combine on the downwind side of the field

I think it was Mike Mitchell was having similar problem throwing crop over the back of the header he raised the reel up and found it didn't throw crop as aggressively. It took him trial and error to get it right. Hope it helps.
Sounds to me like you add the air bar, and possibly a flex head and the Deere is a good choice. Not sure if the maintenance is a problem, but your focus on productivity in the review makes sense.
A lot of awesome quality of life/production features on that machine. It's just the "Right to Repair" issues that bother me and I don't know if those have been solved. Well done Cornstars you're definitely out there getting her done. God Bless all our famers...
Hey Cole I know that you don’t like running the John Deere bean head without the blower system my question is do you want to keep throwing thousands of dollars into you case combine to fix it every time it breaks down or do you want to keep harvesting your crops that’s what you have to consider when running the right combine for harvesting your crops
I know the 790 is a lot newer, but it’s also not a lot different than the 690 which would have been current at the time of their red combine. I think what we are seeing though are the little things that John Deere has always done right. Little things like cup holders are nice, but ergonomics, heavy duty design, technology, etc always seem to be a step ahead on Deere. At least until Fendt came on the scene. Deere developed ROPS, sound guard cabs, narrow tapered hoods, and this was all done in the 1970s.
You can set the yellow wheel on the multi function to flip through your run screens. You can also program the clicking of it to close your slap screens
You sure do look good in that John Deere Cole. Wish they would have brought you a 45ft flex Draper to try out. Also they do have led lights available it appears that combine just doesn’t have the led package.
I'd say a good portion of the "improvements" is the 6 year difference in machines. Big Green fan myself, but I recognize that all colors do the work. I am a bit surprised that the local case dealer is letting Green full court press you though.
I wouldn't imagine that in terms of console controls that a 2020 S-series would be much different than a 14... just going off of running two 2012 RTs and a 2018 RT. Asthetics are a little different and it the controls in the 18 might be slightly more intuitive but almost all of the same console functions exist in both. Deere is way ahead of the all the competition in terms of cab layout and simplifying controls. The upgrades between a 14 S series and 2020 I would imagine come more in the shape of mechanical upgrades.
@@jacobpgood724 No there not. Case IH has always been ahead in creature comforts. a guy that I work for has a 1991 Case IH 7120 that has an air ride seat while my dads 1989 John Deere 4455 does not.
@@Just_a_Mere_Farmer air ride seats are an option in sound guard tractors. I know because the nitrogen charged accumulator for the air ride seat is something that occasionally leaks down in those tractors. Plus my 4650- a tractor 6 years older than your dad's- has one. Case magnums have nice cabs, they still are not as user friendly or nice as the Deere cabs going all the way back to the 8x00-20, and 30 tractor series.
@@jacobpgood724 "Case magnums have nice cabs, they still are not as user friendly or nice as the Deere cabs going all the way back to the 8x00-20, and 30 tractor series" that is an opinion. my dads 2005 Case IH 305 has individual cab suspension. most John Deeres are Case IH copies. I've had the Deere vs Case debate many times and never lost.
Hope buy one you buy one won’t need worry about using bin set up. Most crop be in field still. Green machine 6 years newer get red one same year then can compare.
That case combine must have been run pretty hard all the issues your having glad thay got you a john deere demo have run both kinds and they are very different both good setups for different reasons.
Cole I love your initial thoughts, I would love to see Cooper's, and DC's as well. Between the three of you I would like to see what you all like and what you might differ on. Goes to show we should all not be afraid of trying another brand, they all have pro's and con's.
So, with trying the new equipment you say you are losing yield from the field. Is the loss of the yield still worth trying the new equipment when the margins for profit are so small? I grew up in a farming community in WNY, so I had some friends that were from farming families and I appreciate everything that you farmers do!!!
If I'm not mistaken that combine has the capability to hook to the Tractor now I don't know if your tractor can hook to it but if it has a system in the tractor where you can move the tractor forward or backwards while you're feeling the green card so if you like start at the front and it starts to feel and you want to move back some then you can nudge the tractor forward in the combine like 2 ft at a time I believe it is so you just go two feet then you push a button and the tractor will automatically move forward 2 ft but obviously you have to have the tractor that is got the same system so you can hook up to the combine which is pretty cool
Cole, I’m really glad you had two combines available because you were able to keep going with the Deere after the Case broke down. Thanks Cole for another great video, I liked how you explain the difference between the 2 combines that was really interesting.
Two things you need to carry on your combine:
1. A leaf blower.
2. A infrared thermometer to look for hot bearings and belts when you take a break.
Also a good idea to keep both those things with your round baler

I mean, compare their two older “small” tractors. The Deere is years and years ahead of the Case IH
You can set the yellow wheel on the multi function to flip through your run screens. You can also program the clicking of it to close your slap screens
I'm worried about Cooper and Cole inhaling too much grain dust. Cooper's hair is majestic af but I'm afraid it will get caught in something.
You sure do look good in that John Deere Cole. Wish they would have brought you a 45ft flex Draper to try out. Also they do have led lights available it appears that combine just doesn’t have the led package.
Thank you! God bless your family!
I like how you run the grain cart over to leave a pile of beans so you know what fields you have done
You need one of them Big Birds Brush as Chet would call it on the feeder house to stop that drum from throwing the beans out the front!
Hope buy one you buy one won’t need worry about using bin set up. Most crop be in field still. Green machine 6 years newer get red one same year then can compare.
Oh my. I just saw you over grease the knife head on that case/macdon head. One pump every 10 hours
Nothing runs like a Deere.. Clarion also pretty good tho too. Thanks for the vid. Enjoy the rest of your harvest Cornstars!
The sound system in the JD is the best
So, with trying the new equipment you say you are losing yield from the field. Is the loss of the yield still worth trying the new equipment when the margins for profit are so small? I grew up in a farming community in WNY, so I had some friends that were from farming families and I appreciate everything that you farmers do!!!
Looks like a very handy time for a Demo- They all break down and never at a good time.
It's nice to have that loaner machine to try out. Got to be frustrating all the stuff you have had to do to the Case!
Never hurts to have Chet Larson on speed dial when you're trying to setup in a new 790! 👍
