How to Remove Dashboard - 88-91 Honda CRX & Civic

  • In this video I show you how to remove the dash from any 88-91 CRX or CIVIC. It's a pretty easy DIY process but does involve some time and being careful as to not damage any of the older plastics.
    It is also the end of the 1989 CRX Si. The car has been cut into pieces and taken to the recycler. They don't pay anything for steel but a penny a pound. I took 377 lbs to them and got $3.77 which I turned around and spent on 2 Gatorades because I was tired and thirsty. LOL. I did film the entire cut sequence into a time lapse as well which I found pretty entertaining!
    I got some good parts off the car and we'll see if I make all my money back plus extra and which parts I am keeping.

    Pretty clean for a part out, but if it keeps others on the road its worth it. Great info. A few things on later 90-91 are different, cluster, blower, harness, but should be similar enough. Non-si are easier with less crap.

    Great video. Like always. Just a tip. Dash can be removed with the harness on. you just have to unplug it from the fuse box.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  8 років тому

      That would be much more difficult, since you would have to feed it in from both sides of the engine bay. The part that connects to the passenger side was behind and underneath the blower controls and evaporator core. I don't think I could've gotten all of those wires out without removing those parts, and I couldn't remove those parts without having the dash out of the way.

    • @felixrodriguez6189
      @felixrodriguez6189 8 років тому

      Jon Widmer I should have been more clear. The wiring that is on the dash (cluster, clock, cigarette lighter) come out with dash. There is just one cable you have to remove from the fuse box.

    Looking for help. I installed a Momo hub and a Nardi wheel on my EF. The center bolt is tight, however there’s a mm of play in any direction on the wheel to the column, almost as if there’s a spacer missing. In addition my turn signals won’t turn off after a turn. Is this normal?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  6 років тому

      Not normal at all. You should still have the small plug inside the switch column which has the ears on it. Hopefully the hub slid around the ears which turns off the signal. Was the hub EF specific. Only certain hubs fit the DA/EF, all other Civic and Integra used a different hub.

      General tips in terms of maintenance?

    • @4thlevel386
      @4thlevel386 8 років тому

      Mainly just trying to bring it to original working condition, The engine is perfect and runs great. Only issue is Fuel gauge only works half the time and the trail arm bushes and shocks need replacing, the only other work needed is some panel damage but already have parts to replace them with. But yeah general maintenance tips would be great. Eventually when this car is nice and clean im going to probably get a dc2 integra and turn the crx into a track/show car.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  8 років тому +2

      Honestly these car seem to run with even the crappiest maintenance. I would of course do the usual plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Transmission drain and refill with new fluid and all new radiator hoses and smaller coolant hoses plus a thermostat.
      The fuel sending unit may be broke, or even the cluster. Both are easy to change as you can access the sending unit by lifting out the rear cargo box. You'll see the lid for access to the sending unit.
      Those suspension parts you mentioned are easy to change out also, just takes a little time and effort.
      Keep me updated, or make some videos, would love to see the updates! Need any pointers when you get to work, let me know!

      @4thlevel386 8 років тому

      Thanks! I would love to make videos but dont have anything good to record with but ive been taking photos every step of the way, Might make a build thread on the Honda forums.
      My next step i think is pulling off the muffler and replacing it, replace the fuel sender unit and change the fluids.
      Sadly i didnt realize how hard it would be to find parts locally and how over priced people are selling them for before i got the car, so for now i can only work with a few things until i get my next paycheck and ill pick up parts for the general maintenance.
      Also I've read that the HyperFlex Master Bushing Kit and energy suspension trailing arm bushings are the way to go, Whats your opinion on them because im on a tight budget and they seem to be the cheapest and have quite good reviews.
      Thanks again for the help as well as your channel, Been watching a lot of your videos and they are really helpful and informative.

    how easy would it be to swap hatch dashes? from a 89 to a 90 dash? and do you sell parts? there's a few things I need that I can't find.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 років тому

      Colorado Macbay It's pretty easy. I believe those dashes are the same unless you have a sedan. You can just swap the gauge cluster cover. Unfortunately I do not believe the 88-89 clusters work on the 90-91 models so if you swap clusters and the housing then you're cluster will not work without some modifications to the wiring.
      I sell parts when I have them, usually don't keep much. what are you looking for?

    • @coloradomacbay131
      @coloradomacbay131 7 років тому

      I'm looking for some 89 seats and some Door panel's. I had a 1990 hatch rhat got tboned and I'm using all my parts off my 90 and putting it on my new 89.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 років тому

      Colorado Macbay I only have some CRX Si door panels, not hatchback. They would fit a 90-91 hatchback but not the 88-89 because of the pillar.

      Kevin Williams Aftermarket alarm LED. It seems to be a common/smart place to mount it because you can always get a new piece of plastic to replace it if you ever needed to.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 років тому +2

      Shoot, I don't. The 3 main parts you'll need are the heater core assembly, the blower, and the evap core or evap delete tube. With that you'll at least have heat shooting out the bottom warming up the car. There are the tubes that direct air to the vents also but still not a necessity if you just need heat at the moment.

    • @allmoda1
      @allmoda1 7 років тому

      Jon Widmer I need the bracket that goes from the blower motor to the evap and the ashtray for sure if you still have those. Then it would be nice to have a new dome light and the trim over the back glass above the hatch. I work away from home so I can't really pin anything else but those parts would have my car almost complete again
