The shooting took place at the new RC courthouse on Aug. 9, 2005. I remember walking into my bank on Palm Beach in south Florida.. and looking up at the silent TV screen and seeing the building, thinking ... "That looks like the Roane County Courthouse.... wonder what's goin on there??" At 4:47, on the left, just above that blue BMW, is the front porch of Kingston's oldest private home, the (Col.) Gideon Morgan House. For years, it was owned by Bob and Mildred Delaney. Mrs. Delaney was the RCHS Home Economics instructor back in the '70's when I was in school - a lovely lady with a heart of gold. A great town to grow up in.
RCHS (Roane County High School) class of 1981 here. I remember Fotchem Palmer that worked at the Browder hardware store in downtown, video marked at 6:06 at that first red you mentioned . It would have been to the right at that light. That road to Ten Mile is what we call South Of The River (58) There was once a gas station where Rite Aid is now, left side at that red light. The hardware store has since burned down. Fotchem and his son John Palmer used to stand in the street at that red light mentioned at 6:06 mostly in in front of the bank and sell newspapers to anyone that stopped to buy them. Fotchem and John both were also school bus drivers years ago. Fotchem was actually my mom's bus drive back in the 1940s.
The shooting you mentioned took place in 2005 at the new courthouse. A male prisoner was being escourted out of the courthouse after pleading guilty to a robbery charge. aA Department of Correction van was waiting outside in the parking lot when the prisoner's wife shot the officer in the van and killed him. She is now serving a life term. Not sure if Kinser's drug store is around anymore but back in the early days kids would go walk there from high school for lunch and have hamburgers. It was by the White Store, which I believe is gone now. All of this was basically behind the new courthouse. I know Kingston has changed a lot but still a nice town. I dont live there anymore as I had a military job and moved around quite a bit since 1986. I still have family there and visit quite often. On the video at 6:24 mark that is actually part of Midtown, you are actually looking at the backside of Ponderosa Subdivision. I lived right in that area. I lived on Bluff Rd and Duncan Hollow which leads to the old Cas Walker building area.
I currently live here always have don’t plan on leaving. Super glad you took time and recognized this amazing town/ city
It is a wonderful town. I miss living there myself, sometimes. I lived in the townhouses right across from Cherokee Middle School, lol.
