Pete, for those of us who shoot over 100 on a regular basis - Thank You for this video!
The Golf Gods are cruel masters and we the unwashed masses all think in our heads we could be a scratch golfer "I would have been great if only I had *drove *chipped *putted like I know I can 10% of the time"
Your honesty in this edit is massively appreciated - I'm sure watching the 11th hole again would have been painful to review
Looking forward to the next one in which I'm sure you'll shoot a Tigeresque score again!

Hats off to you Pete. I can only imagine how raw that experience felt. Thank you for sharing not only the focus and practice leading up to the comp, as well as the results of that, but the weakness and oversight that was there as well. It is one of the things I love about the Quest for the Open series. There is so much to this game, and you are at a level that I never see myself achieving. It is exciting to "share the journey" with someone of your skill and get to live the experience a little bit via your videos. Keep it up mate!

Great job getting out of your head and back on pace after the 11th that is a great lesson in not compounding mistakes. Watching you and Rick got me back into golf after a bad back injury which kept me from walking for a year and then off the course for another year after that. I developed a serious fear of golf and even went so far as to sell all my clubs. Watching both your channels has reignited the passion and I went to the range for the first time in 2 years the week before last and had a fantastic time with my dad. I can't thank you enough for your hard work on UA-cam sharing with us both the good and the bad and for the great coaching. I truly do appreciate it as thanks to you guys I'm back at it.

I love the honesty here. This is why this is such a valuable series to watch. I imagine all golfers who take the game at all seriously have had that period of panic, where the walls close in and the self-doubt creeps to the front of your consciousness. "The Demons" as Mike Malaska calls them. The fact that you were able to collect yourself and play better immediately after such a nightmare hole is the real lesson here. So often with amateurs that nightmare hole bleeds over for the next several holes and becomes a disaster. Such a great series. Keep battling on Pete.

This was actually incredibly encouraging. As a guy coming back to golf after 15 plus years off, and struggling to score despite knowing I can play better, it's actually very good to see everyone has their own version of that struggle. I admire you, Rick Shiels and Clay Ballard for your clear, simplistic versions of complicated concepts and hope to one day perform even half as well as you all have achieved, albeit in different ways. Keep at it, and I will eagerly await watching you surpass this latest hurdle.

Keep your head up Pete. I can identify with everything you described in the video through literally every round of golf. You had 17/18 holes that were still good. One bad hole does not make a bad golfer.
I have learnt a lot since I started watching your videos so you're definitely doing a lot right.
Definitely keen to hear how the mental coaching sessions go as I want to work on that as well.
Keep on smiling, the good times are just around the corner. Oh, and never stop having fun. It's why we play this game in the first place.

Your attitude in defeat is inspirational. I played the TPC here in the Twin Cities last week. Just a friendly game but a course us mere mortals don't get to play often, I wanted to do well. I got stuck in a fairway bunker, first swing, all sand,.. second swing, barely moved the ball...third swing the ball moved and rolled right back to where I was standing. I picked up my ball, got in my cart and met the group down at the green. I was salty to put it lightly. One guy made a great putt and I congratulated him...I felt the weight lifted from me as I was genuinely happy for him, it wasn't fake or jealousy. I played and struck the ball well the last three holes with a monster drive on the 18th, one of my best.

So much admiration for your honesty and openness. It’s easy to disguise blemishes online and selectively create an unrealistic image of perfection, particularly for pros. But that’s not how life is. I’m a professional performer myself and understand this conundrum as much as anyone. It’s so refreshing to see that even the guys at the top of their game can have bad days and need to keep working at it. We never, ever see that online. Thank you, Pete. Also great to see how much your working at your game and how much you want to step up to the next level. Really inspirational and makes me feel less of a chump for spending 6 hours a day in the practice room. Will be waving the Finch Flag at The Open when it finally happens.

Peter you referenced an excellent round that you played prior to the comp. I’ve found in life in general, and very much in golf, that expectation is the thief of joy. I’ve had to learn as a player to completely forget my good rounds as well as my bad, and when I show up at the range gauge my skill set for the day and adjust the plan for my round accordingly. Huge kudos to you for recovering from the 11, You showed some serious grit. Keep slashing at it!

Two ways to do everything I guess..because I am known to (purposely) look at the hole instead of the ball when I’m putting..like get my ball all aligned, line my body up, get my putter behind the ball then stare at the hole and stroke the putter. More often than not, it’s perfect distance control and I hit it as close or closer (or sink it) than a traditional putt.
The staring at the cup helps both speed control and also just overall confidence in my experience.
    It works. Try it.
It’s easy to do. Unless you have an out of control putting stroke

I enjoy all of your videos and being honest with us over all aspects of your game makes you just that much more enjoyable.
Over the weekend I played a course that I hadn't been on in 3 years. It is a premier local course and very challenging. In 2017 I had just taken up the game and really had no business playing this course. I shot around 120 and lost 14 golf balls. On Saturday I was so nervous teeing it up at the beginning but once I got the first shot into the fairway it was nothing but smiles for the rest of the day. This time I shot right at 100 and lost no balls. The 13 three putts were my down fall but coming off of 18 I felt so great. This video just keeps me motivated to keep practicing.

This was incredibly refreshing. Technique is important, trust in your technique is also important, but you need to have both of those to compete under pressure. Totally agree that as a coach this will help enormously, and hopefully as a player. One thing is for certain, thousands of people will have learnt a great deal from your experience, and in terms of growing the game, that is exactly what we need.

Thanks for sharing this, Pete! I'm not anywhere near as good a golfer as you are, but I would have totally lost the grip after getting an 11, let alone getting back 3 strokes, so well done!
Regarding putting, if you don't mind an observation, I noticed that - because I struggle with the same thing - you open your hips a bit as you make contact with the ball. Because it's a small amount, it doesn't have much effect on shorter putts, but definitely affects longer putts, causing, or at the very least contributing to, a left miss.

Amazing reflection Peter, I think the most telling and useful thing that takes no talent at all, is what you mentioned about seeing the golf course. It’s so easy to get lost in a round thinking about your grip, or swing keys, or blowing up mentally...but simple things like watching other players shots into a green, how they roll out...actually looking at the slope of the green as you walk up the fairway instead of hanging your head and grumbling about being in the bunker. Really making use of all the info available to you is something you need to constantly remind yourself of. Great series as always!

We are all experts sitting on the sidelines - but for my two pence of experience I see its a mental block. Putting pressure on yourself to qualify for the open - rather than play your natural game. I whistle the Morecombe and Wise tune after a hole to put it to bed and keep relaxed. once the basics of golf are sorted, 80% of your problems come mentally, investing in a coach to help you prepare for that mental battle will go a long way! Great video again Peter, being so honest and critical of yourself in a positive way, very inspirational to the young/new players. Don't get down on yourselves guys, brush the bad shots off and just think of what you can do better next time! :)

Pete used to play golf with a guy who was awesome on practice rounds ext but could not play tournament golf due to his anxiety. That was until he started playing with a caddy that was a good friend. Took the pressure off him as he was not thinking about his next shot until he needed to. If you are not allowed caddies then ask a friend to walk with you talk about anything but golf between shots. You have the game to play we all know that. Good luck with your quest and keep the videos coming

Huge amount of respect to you Pete, you could have easily hid away from this, not posted the video and pretended it didn’t happen. Facing it head on will hopefully benefit you massively going forward.

An extremely honest and insightful video. You could easily of not posted it or given up during the round but you did neither which is huge credit to you. I have learnt some key points for my own golf thanks to your honesty. Good luck in your next event.

It’s videos like this, of Pros shooting scores like average golfers that give me more confidence. Understandably it’s frustrating for you however it’s inspiring when pros are transparent like this and allow us to remember that everybody regardless of skill level has shocking days.

Very frank and honest assessment buddy - respect. I've followed you for years and your technique has never been the issue. You hit the nail on the head - its the mental game and the pressure you put on yourself that's holding you back. Keep believing and you'll get there though, and we'll enjoy being able to follow you through it. (P.S. Maybe give Bob Rotella's Golf is Not a Game of Perfect another read... 😉)

I don't play much competitive golf now, but years ago I started off a shotgun start tournament by hitting 3 tee shots out of bounds on a par 5...I feel your pain. I actually "eagled" the hole with my 4th ball for a lovely 9. I was ready to quit, but the good friend I was playing with said "you can't leave me out here, plus we're as far away from the clubhouse as you can get on this course" so I stuck with it. Actually played the next 17 holes in 2 over for a smooth 78. Never give up!!!

I wouldn’t worry Pete, I’ve had an 11 and a 12 before. It’s golf, it happens. Keep up the good work and it will pay off. I have been suffering a lot from anxiety in golf, and i get so tense in competitions, tighten up and swing fast and don’t commit and then hit it so poorly . But the more comps i play, the better

Good on you bud for not checking out after the disaster. It happens to the best of players at times. How you immediately follow it says a lot about your character. Glad to hear you took pride in your finish and grinded it out. That’s what a PROFESSIONAL does.

Just had my first round today after nearly 4 months off the Course due to the covid-19. one of my biggest issues is anxiety whilst playing with unfimilliar people. So today on the signature hole this guy and his family showed up and boom the nerves hit. Luckily I took a deep breath hit a gentle 9 iron and stops 6 ft from the hole. On other holes when I had 20ft putts I nailed them with the Finch claw lol and yet 2 putted ome 6 ft putts. Was a messy 82 but it was fun

That's one thing I don't do well myself either. Actually walked off the course after losing my 3rd ball on a hole. It's just embarrassing. I'm sure crippling depression wasn't helping the last time I tried, but you got past it mate, and that's what matters! I'm going to remember your story about overcoming the adversity, and hopefully get within about 10 strokes of where you shot! 🤣

The fact that you were able to still play another 7 holes, almost ace your drive on a par 3, and birdie coming in is really impressive. Aside from Tour pros, 90-95% of golfers would have easily collapsed after an 11 midway through a round, during a competition. To me, that says more about your mental game right there; able to block out a rubbish hole and still finish strong.
I can relate too. I just played a course that I’ll be competing in today, played it once 8 years ago, but basically going in blind. Course is severely underlating and it’s got about 6 different types of grass, depending upon the location. First drive is right in the middle, short par 4 to an elevated green, and I card a 7. Unfortunately, it set the tone for the round but it made me wake up to, as you said, the importance of course knowledge and ball placement. Where should your misses go and what club should you hit off of the tee? Hopefully, I can commit to a solid game plan before the comp in 2 weeks time. Cheers mate!

Thanks for being honest and sharing that. I suffer from anxiety a lot in my competitions and i guess those are my masters qualifiers and open qualifiers. Club championship qualifiers every year i hit in the 80's and feel like all good in my game goes on holiday!
Does just prove how important the mental side is. Look forward to you sharing your findings...

I know the feeling. Although not professional, I also did this in my first competition after I restarted my golf playing days. Hooked 3 balls into a dense forrest left luckily found the third and manged to scrap 10. Played the last 12 holes 2 over, which isn´t bad for 12 handicap. My point is, it is just one isolated hole with many failures. Keep on!

Thanks for your honesty Peter, I can assure you that we can all learn from this along with you and the same for the mental side of the game when things don’t go our way and we have to shut out what just happened, relax, refocus and go again.

Loving the series Peter! It takes a huge amount of courage to talk us through what happened on the 11th hole. I still remember Kevin Na carding a 16 in a PGA tour event years ago so don't feel bad. If golf was an easy game, we'd all be on the tour! Best of luck to you in the future and crossing my fingers to see you at the Open soon! By the way, we have great weather year round here in northern California and plenty of spectacular courses to play!

Love the videos Pete. Started playing just before lock down and no point me watching giant Americans telling me how to get an extra 30 yards off the tee! You and Rick are way beyond what I can get to but it’s relatable and promotes the joy of the game.
