    Nice review and comparison to the Citizen model. One point of clarification about your comments at 20:46 - just like the Citizen Eco-Drive, the V147 solar movement in the Seiko is powered by any light source, not just the sun. The details on charging times for different light sources are detailed in the manual for the Seiko.

    It’s a great value at under $400. USD in 05/2022. I have plenty of automatic watches. I also have some Citizen solar quarts watches and they are my daily work watches. They keep great time without having to change a battery every few years and they are extremely reliable. I’m in hvac and they are not babied. I just bought this one and can’t wait to get it on my wrist!

      @ Nice! So, I posted that comment 5/22. Here it is 11/24 and I’m still wearing the same watch as my daily work watch. I still enjoy wearing it. Still looks great. Keeps great time. (I only reset it spring/fall daylight saving time). Certainly has proven to be an outstanding value!

    Yes, it's overpriced, but sapphire crystal and true diver certification have to be taken into account as well. It looks way better than the Citizen but that's of course subjective.

      @@Klunker1 Exactly what do you mean with “not true”? Just because you bought it at a lower price, doesn’t mean the initial msrp was the price you paid. At the price they wanted when they released this watch (when I made the video) the price was, in my opinion, too high. Now, if you bought it for $360 that’s another story and I congratulate you on a great deal 😊

      @@backintimewatches sorry for the confusion. I’m going by current prices that range from $360 to $405. I agree with Francisco that it can’t compare to the Citizen in the video as they’re different size and style. I agree the bracelet is crap but I don’t wear bracelets anyway and have at least a half dozen straps already that look great on the watch. It’s really hard to find a diver in this size , very comfortable and great looking. If Citizen made something in this size I would be very interested.

    The price is very close to what I paid for my Casio Oceanus which is a titanium watch with a fully milled titanium bracelet, Sapphire crystal running a Tough Solar movement with Multiband 6, and World Time for 29 cities. I also own a few Eco Drives and they all have really decent specs for around 300 USD. Seiko seems to be ruffling a few feathers lately 😀

      The casio oceanus is a spectacular watch. I can't remember where I read this, but the company that seiko contracts out to do their GS finishings is the same company that Casio contracts to for their casework on the Oceanus and MRG line of watches.

  • @Roughdraft214

    Really, are solid end links and milled clasps better? Are they better because the watch world says they are, or do they perform the same? For me those things wouldn’t bother me so long as the watch is comfortable and doesn’t rattle, other than that only I’ll know these things, no one who sees my watch would know, so it’s not a deal breaker for me. Even sapphire is kind of gimmicky to me, but maybe that’s because I’ve never had a problem with mineral crystals. I just wanted to point out that these small details are, well, small, and probably more preference than anything. I would say build quality of this watch is excellent as is. My main concern would be how well the solar cell and battery hold up. I had a Seiko solar dive watch about 15 years ago and it didn’t last long. I just bought this model so I’m really hoping it’ll last longer this go around. The specs and looks are spot on, and the small details i mentioned really aren’t a problem to me, but then again that’s just me.

      The watch is definitely not too expensive. I have a Seiko SPB143 with the 6R35 caliber and it is so inaccurate that it is no longer fun. It cost well over 1000 euros and is garbage. Thanks for the great review! I agree it looks like a homage to a vintage Rolex/Tudor which I don’t even mind since it’s Seiko. (To be honest I think they knew it would be part of the appeal) It’s £500 in the UK. I absolutely would love this as an everyday watch but I think I would feel angry that I paid that price after purchasing it. £30 more gets you a seiko ‘King Samurai’ with an automatic movement with hand-winding and hacking, ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal.

      @@vonkruel if you do then check for aligned second hands and look at both sizes - they are fairly close - also look at the GMT HAQ option in the range.
      The white dial seems most legible in all lighting and the least likely to date. Note the perpetual calendar and other interesting features. The whole case is very attractive and robust and the case-back is a stunner!
      It's really a scientific instrument designed to tell THE exact time.

    • @vonkruel
      @vonkruel 3 роки тому

      @@citizent6999 Actually I was thinking a GMT HAQ would check two boxes for my modest collection here. My wrist size is 20cm so I take the larger size when there are options. The Conquest VHP does look like a nice value proposition for sure. +/- 5 sec in a year is about twice as impressive as +/- 10, and the latter is no mean feat. Yes, I noticed the perpetual calendar and that's also an attractive feature to me. Legibility is important to me also (eyes aren't what they used to be), and I've been gravitating toward white dials. I recently received the Phoibos PY032E (white dial DLC dive watch) and I love the high contrast between hands & dial. There's not a ton of selection for HAQ, but 1 attractive watch that really shows what quartz can do -- that'll do it for me. Thanks again for pointing me toward Longines (move over, Grand Seiko).

    • @vonkruel
      @vonkruel 3 роки тому +1

      @@citizent6999 Looking into this a bit more, I came upon the issue of changing out the battery (which is normally simple on a quartz). Do you plan on changing the battery yourself or sending it to Longines? It seems like you _can_ do it if the battery wasn't totally dead, but if it completely died you'd have to reprogram the watch (do instructions exist for that?). I also saw what you meant about the alignment of the seconds hand being something to look for.

    The only thing I don't like about old skool Quartz is having the battery change. If you do it yourself you always end up making scratches on your watch for the sake of putting in a 2 dollar battery. And paying a steep fee for someone letting it do is also just a waste of money.
    Problem with automatics, is I run always late in the morning when preparing for work. I need something to grab that is still ticking, so yeah solar is my prefered work horse movement.
    As for Seiko, I love them. But they are going serious up market. The previous Seiko 5 was around 150 USD, the new ones north of 300 USD, and you don't even get a saphire glass or a sollid link bracelet on your new 5 for the extra charge. You can buy Lorus instead, they are good value for money... But there is just something I don't like about that name. It like that Cheapo faux fashion store selling miss spelled brand names. Guess becomes Cuess, Armani Armano and Louis Vuitton Lewis Vyton. If you tell about your Lorus, people always think it's a rip off on Lotus you got in that store.
    So yeah, Casio and Citizen Solar Quartz on my next year wish list, then maybe an automatic Lorus for that one vintage design they offer at that great price... And one previous gen Seiko 5 that is still around when I get some money to spare.

    Just my own opinion but I think you might be better to stick with watches over 42mm. My wrist is 180 and I have a 39mm diver that I always find myself looking at and thinking it’s a couple mm too small, even though beautiful. My 42mm watches I don’t think that of. My 44mm watches I think look a bit too big but still wearable. With the size of your wrist and all the tatts I think you need more wrist presence. Having said that it is a nice looking watch and if you’re happy with it then awesome 👍🏼👍🏼

    I wouldn't compare a mineral glass, 4 month battery life, world time watch with a sapphire glass divers watch with a 10 month battery life. I'm sure it has comparisons, but not this citizen. And also it MAY Appear that both are water resistent to 200 meters, but if it doesn't say 'Divers" it's not tested and approved to go down to 200 meters.

    I don't feel your Seiko & Citizen comparision is "apples to apples." The Citizen specs are 42mm case x 13.3mm thick, is a field watch style, with GMT and international time around the bezel. The Seiko is a "prospex" diver that is 38.5mm case x 10.6mm thick, with a traditional bezel and is dive rated. The Citizen is actually a GMT field watch and the Seiko a smaller, mid-size dive watch. I would not be looking at both of these for the same reason because of the size and style of each. You will typically pay more for a Seiko Prospex watch than similar Citizen. BTW: I own both Citizen Eco-Drive and Seiko Solar watches. I do, however, agree on your price issue. You can get this Seiko, and in other color variations, on Amazon or other sources for under $400.

  • @Robert_McShouty
    @Robert_McShouty Рік тому +1

    Hard disagree on the price. For a solar diver with saphire, this is worth every penny because at that point its an investment watch that will take anything you throw at it. The Seikos that arent worth the box they come in? Any of the Lux line with the 6r series. Garbage unreliable movement. Yes, everyone knows a guy who knows a guys whos second cousin has one and hasnt had any issues with his, but the overall complaints of the irregularities of that movement are plentiful.
    Seiko solar is fine, and old kinetic is fine, anything GS is fine. Don't bother with Seikos lower to mid tier auto's.
    Also, if we're talking cost and think ~$500 is expensive, go take a look at Breitlings superquartz offerings and then get back to me.

      @@backintimewatches I guess I'm a little lost as to the value metric used. It's an entirely in-house watch, and one that should last a lifetime. The only brand that can come close to offering that level of spec and price is Citizen due to economics of scale.
      And let's be honest, anyone that pays msrp on a watch does it on purpose. Most Seiko AD'S offer 20% across the board anyway, even in 2023. Both my Breitlings were bought grey market, knowing full well they were ETA based and an in-house warranty wasn't needed.
      Otherwise great review. If this was powered by the 4r movement and cost over $400, or a 6r and cost over $700 than I'd agree with you all the way to the bank. The best value Seiko has is anything not auto, or GS if the pockets are deep enough.

    Obviously Citizen have the market sewn up in this segment and make some fine divers
    However - while they’re excellent they do lack character
