  • It’s an emergency episode of the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast!
    San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier has fired head coach David Quinn.
    When did Sheng first get wind that Quinn’s job might be in jeopardy? He had an idea on Monday. (1:10)
    What’s our first reaction? Sheng argues that the Sharks’ ill-constructed roster wasn’t on Quinn, but more on Grier. (4:33)
    So if not the roster, did Quinn get fired because he didn’t develop the young San Jose Sharks players? (23:00)
    Were Grier and Quinn on the same page about what they wanted out of the Sharks, their identity?
    Keegan wonders if player perception of Quinn doomed him. (26:40)
    Sheng and Keegan speculate on other reasons why Grier fired Quinn. Is Grier feeling the heat from above (read: Hasso Plattner) after back-to-back disappointing seasons? (34:40)
    Keegan argues there isn’t much downside to letting Quinn go right now.
    Was Quinn a fall guy for Grier?
    What type of coach should the San Jose Sharks target in this stage of their rebuild? What about David Carle? (43:30)
    What are our thoughts about Grier keeping John McCarthy behind the San Jose Barracuda bench? (47:05)
    Finally, a note about the San Jose Sharks hoping to sign Will Smith. (53:20)

    I don't think you should be kicking yourself over it, Sheng. 100% the right move to not jump the gun when it comes to someone's job/livelihood

    Grier has said over and over he wanted a team hard to play against. I anticipate he will go out this offseason and find those types of players like Carrick, Perry, Hathaway, etc. He likes Kunin-type players.

    1:01:20 I think this hits the nail on the head. I don't hate the move of letting Quinn go, but am a little worried about what it might suggest for Grier's plan with the rebuild. Is it a sign that he wants to move things too quickly? Probably not, but combined with what he's said about Smith coming over, it's at least worth considering.
    I don't think there's much point in trying to improve the team too fast. Sure, more than 47 points would be ideal next year... that's not a good environment for development. But you'd still really like to get one more really premium top 3 pick in next year's draft. Then, you can look to start building up a bit more. Make the coaching changes for a longer term building-up of the team.
    This is probably just one way he's trying to make adjustments for next year. But I hope it's not a sign that he's trying to pull out of the rebuild too fast, and trying to improve too much at once. Not a terrible move, but I think it happened one year too early.

      Jul. 1 will be very interesting. I think he's still taking his time, but I do think he has to show better results to Hasso, at least less embarrassing. I think we can generally agree that you can aim for top picks, but without losing THIS bad

    Yes, I think Mike Grier is feeling the heat from Hasso Plattner and the business operations aspect of the team. You can't field a team that is so uncompetitive that you have only 4-5 thousand in the Arena most weeknight games.

    What about Ryan Warsofsky as the next head coach? I read that Grier might be looking for a younger coach that the roster can grow with. Ryan won the Calder cup in 2021/22.
    The down side is Ryan worked for 2 years with this roster, so would this roster be willing to listen to Warsofsky?

      I'm assuming he probably means a guy like David Carle. He's a coach who has a great track record of developing young players but is also a great tactician and great at getting the most out of his team

    Horrible team put together by MG, but the way they lost this year is unacceptable. There are plenty of good proven coaches to pick from and majority are much better then Quinn.

    Seems more like a culture/leadership move than a performance move. Yes, sharks shouldn't have been this bad but looking at the players on our team, the 54 games lost due to injury (#1 in the NHL), and Mike shouldering blame for the season based on his roster construction, it doesn't seem results based. I think based on exit interviews, Grier having to step in at a VERY early point in the season to turn around the locker room, and probably other things that we on the outside haven't seen, it became clear that Quinn wasn't the leader needed to steer this ship. I'm interested to see who becomes the next coach, whether is a more known quantity like a Don Granato or a younger coach who has a successful track record with young players (Warsofsky, Carle of Denver/Team USA), but I have a feeling that Quinn lost respect and control of the locker room and Grier is looking for a stronger leader.

    These are the tank years. Who cares who the HC is? Maybe Grier wanted to see more work ethic, but that’s tough for 82 games when you’re icing barely AHL level talent. Keep losing Sharks, get top picks, and set the tone when the kids are ready for the show.

      Agree, time to go for Hagens next year, whether the team gets Celebrini or not.
      It should eventually come together naturally as all these picks happen and mature, and as Vlasic and Couture’s time run out.

    I agree that the firing seems unfair based on the roster construction. But what about Calen Addison, Filip Zadina, development? These two seemed to regress.

      The big point I see brought up is that the fact Grier had to address the locker room so early in the season did not look good on Quinn and the culture he was instilling. Sturm also hinted he didn't like the direction Quinn was taking the team's culture in.

    • @ShengPeng
      @ShengPeng  5 місяців тому +1

      @@vincentalvarado7058 I don't think Sturm has hinted that, where?

    • @ShengPeng
      @ShengPeng  5 місяців тому

      I think both, especially Zadina, were inconsistent. Not sure how that's on Quinn? I'm not sure how either regressed. Addison had better stats with the Wild, but he was playing with a lot more talent there, and the same reasons why the Wild were willing to trade him for not much, those shortcomings showed up in San Jose

    • @rickgray5731
      @rickgray5731 5 місяців тому

      @vincentalvarado7058 I don't remember Sturm mentioning Quinn at all in his locker cleanout session. I do remember Nico saying bringing back the same group would be crazy.

    • @rickgray5731
      @rickgray5731 5 місяців тому

      @ShengPeng That's true. Not sure Addison should get another chance with the Sharks, and neither do I feel Zadina should get another chance. The -44 is very telling. His lack of defensive structure is why I feel this way. He's not the kind of hockey player this team needs moving forward. Zadina and Addison are the type of player I feel Nico Sturm was talking about. Their the players I was thinking. He was warning shouldn't be allowed to return. At least that's my two cents. Thanks for all the great coverage, Sheng.

    I keep thinking that Quinn should have fired Grier for the players that he was given to forge into a team. Mike Grier wants to try something better, and find a coach that works better with the players. Either a) Quinn is the scapegoat for Sharks organization coming in last; or b) Quinn was not the right coach because he did not get the most or push these misfit players enough, whatever he did, the players did not respond positively. I think there is an element of hypocrisy in being impatient with Quinn after 2 years when we are expected to give Mike Grier 5 to 7 years to "re-build" this team. Maybe a more pushy or desperate or aggressive coach will work better, maybe a European coach to work with new players, or a wild experiment with a player like Joe Thornton to see if he can bring the team together better with his less cerebral approach to game. Sharks players need to recover their love of the game and not be deflated by a bad puck bounce or ref call. I think Grier will go through multiple coaches in this re-build rather than stick with one steady coach for 7 years. Grier is entitled to experiment and change faces but has to stabilize the team identity and scout much better to identify the right kind of prospects.
