- People are freaking out about powdered alcohol, but I wasn’t convinced they understood the science behind it. So I tested their concerns. Will it get you crazy drunk? Will people snort it? Watch and see! -Brent

Notes: Let’s state the obvious here: this is not the commercial version of powdered alcohol. It’s a very DIY version that was suggested by Popular Science (see link below). The version that is slated to go on sale this summer will almost certainly use a higher proof alcohol (151 is as high as we could legally get in California), so it’ll be a bit more efficient. There’s also a strong chance that it will use a cyclodextrin powder instead of the maltodextrin we used. Cyclodextrin is essentially a ring of sugar molecules that can trip liquids inside. Right now food-grade cyclodextrin is very difficult to find for consumers and it’s quite expensive, so we went with maltodextrin. We acknowledge that there’s a chance that cyclodextrin would dissolve a bit faster, but we maintain that it would still be prohibitively slow for spiking a drink. Everything else basically holds true. For the snorting section, for instance, that is the real quantity you would need to get one drink’s worth.

DrSpooglemon Huh? When you dry something into a powder, all the water leaves and it becomes smaller but the ingredient is still there. Therefore, when you make a powder out of pure alcohol it has to become super concentrated. It's like if you heat up an entire bottle of rum you get left with a brown sticky substance that is like 1000 times smaller than the rum used to be, and if you keep on heating it, you get a super concentrated powder of rum cause all the water is gone. That's how it's possible. QED, as they say.

It totally works, been a few years since i last did some, but it's quite easy to vape alcohol and the most dangerous form of ingestion(or at least with alc poisoning in mind), but it IS SUPER STRONG.
I tried it once. Id rather just drink it but it does work. It doesn't last long at all though.

Well the problem with snorting alcohol, just like the problem with "butt chugging", inhaling, and injecting alcohol is that it bypasses the liver's ability to break it down before it enters the bloodstream. Drinking a shot of alcohol is much, much, MUCH different than the other things I stated. If you did your basic research, you'd know this.

My Uncle is a doctor and he explained to me that to get a quick hit from alcohol 7% ABV is around the correct strength to get straight into your bloodstream. If you drink stronger alcohol the body decides it is too strong and the alcohol stays in the stomach while the body finds water to dilute the strong alcohol, this takes time so the your hit is delayed.
I would imagine that it would be a re-formulated version of alcohol that is a solid at room temperature, not tapioca powder saturated with vodka, that's just silly. GHB for instance, is basically alcohol in powdered form just with very slight differences in effects.

A good use for it, only if it's in a manufacturer sealed and labeled container(so it's not mistaken for drugs), would be to take it on a plane or other places that have restrictions on quantity of liqued that can be carried on the plane or on flammable liquids.

Probably wouldn't make a world of a difference but ingesting through the nostrils (or any other mucous membrane for that matter) will get any substance much faster/more efficiently into your bloodstream, so you wouldn't have to work through 30 fat lines to get the same results.
But all those fat lines are just one standard drink, even if it was absorbed faster you won't get drunk easily. It's easier and faster to take a liquid shot and using a powder is just painful and stupid

hahahaha love the "concern"... think about it, for the same amount of alcohol u need to drink, u'd have to add the "mixer"to make it powdery.... (tapioca, or some different kind of bonder)... so technically u are consuming the same calories + sthg more... All in all, completely inefficient like the whole thing... Just get a bottle of anything, and chug it down like any normal person.

Why is no one pointing out the obvious flaw in this "research"? Obviously, when it hits the market, it most likely will not be maltodextren, and one drinks worth will very likely be contained within the normal size of a powdered water enhancer.

From what I've heard, it's a stupidly inefficient way to store alcohol. Being it's mostly filler, you're carrying around a LOT of weight over the liquid version.

The way they do powdered alcohol it's gonna be much more concentrated that what you did. They have a special process during which alcohol get encapsulated inside tiny maltodextrin capsules. Nothing evaporates, mix easily and deliver a punch.

Best use case for this stuff I can imagine is camping, festivals, or other scenarios where you don't want a bunch of room-consuming spillable liquid in your pack and you can just add water upon arrival so you don't have to carry all the excess liquid.
Well if all That powder = 1 drink, it’d Sunkist make more sense to bring fifth which is what.. 23 oz? So 23 1 oz drinks in a small bottle vs 1 drink in powder form which takes up almost the same amount of space.. It's just not practical until it gets concentrated enough to where it actually has a cause for concern
