    I'm lucky as a beginner I learned from the ground up with Bryan Sutton as my instructor at Artistworks.

    Marcel seeing your intro, my wrist and hand simply do not hinge that way, laterally, parallel to the top, with minimal or zero twisting of the forearm. Trying for any speed at all and I go into the knocking on a door motion, especially when floating my hand. How do I change how my wrist hinges?

    Ah maybe Dan and Beppe disagree? Just kidding, I don’t know how they do it but boy they sure do. I’m in your camp as far as holding a pick.

    I don't want to denigrate any bluegrass players, and if you are a bluegrass player, denigrate means to put down ❤

    THANK GOD YOU SAID IT! The amount of students I have to break from "planting" their hand somewhere... yes it can touch.. and those players you SWEAR are locking it down... they aren't.... but I equate it to "a shortstop with locked knees" when you lock and pivot on any point.... stay fluid my friends.. perfectly said Marcel.

    Still a beginner, can only do a handful of licks and runs but I can’t help but rest/lock my fingers on the pick-guard, it serves as an anchor point for me, not to play faster but because it’s my guide to where each string is. If I play loose I lose my bearings.

      You're good. Playing anchored is a legitimate technique. Don't feel bad about using it.

    Sounds bad but I e played for 22 years and I can't hold the pick that way and strum chords. Picking sure, but strumming rhythmically and it falls right out.

      I’m with you man. I’ve also played about 22 years and can’t do anything holding the pick that way. It slides around all over the place

    I’m used to playing electric guitar with one of those tiny jazz iii picks-green tortex, to be exact. I notice bluegrass players tend to use giant picks like the blue chip. Will I be holding myself back in some way, be it in speed, volume, or tone, if I try to learn bluegrass with a jazz iii?

    • @oldtimetinfoilhatwearer
      @oldtimetinfoilhatwearer Рік тому +1

      Definitely not. I have a bluechip and an apollo and I'm firmly in the camp that a specific kind of flatpick won't make you play any better. The important thing is the edge bevel, and the thickness. Generally you'll want a minimum of a millimeter. But if you get yourself a six grit nail buffer those work perfectly for beveling flatpicks. The guys at bluechip and toneslabs, and nik monnen at Apollo are master pick bevelers that use very expensive materials, but I don't really think you need the expensive materials.
