Musically it is far more complex and pleasing, though not nearly as good as the Russian National anthem. I wonder how many of those who like the Russian anthem know about its history. The Soviet Union had a "national" anthem introduced during the black years of Stalin's reign of terror. This anthem remained in place up to the demise of the USSR in 1991. Russia's first president Yeltsin then introduced a brand-new Russian national anthem, based on a melody by 19th century classical composer Glinka. This was seen as a symbolic break with the Stalinist and totalitarian Soviet past - a new anthem for a new Russia. When Putin came into power, one of his first decisions was to abolish this Russian national anthem and to reintroduce the old Stalin anthem. Of course, the text had to be adapted, since all references to the "united, mighty Soviet Union" and the communist party, "the party of Lenin, the force of the people" had become obsolete.
