The 20 year old hood latch on my 04 Silverado 1500 broke today. The hood release cable still seems to be working just fine but the latch itself is completely frozen. I tried to pivot the latch with a screwdriver through the grill and it won't rotate at all. I was wondering if removing the latch bolts might work and found this video. This will be my next step after trying to outline the latch with some paint markers. I purchased a new replacement latch but just need to get the hood open to replace it. Thanks for the video!
If you can outline the old latch with a marker or a screwdriver or something, it will allow you to place the new latch in the same position reducing the chances that the new latch needs to be adjusted . We did this in the body shop all the time.
@@HomeOwnerRepair I went ahead and did this with chalk taped to the end of a screwdriver which I accessed through the front grill. I outlined the latch assembly and each bolt. This should help quite a bit later during installation. Thank you!
I would highly recommend once you get it open spray the latch assembly really good with a good dry lubricant. Like silicone based spray lube usually works well. Spray it in all the pivot points and then work the latch a bunch of times. Open and close the hood a half dozen times or so and then spray the latch some more. Then redo it roughly every 6 months or so and it will help eliminate the hood from ever sticking again unless you have a broken release cable or something.
This is a big problem where I live too. The salt and stuff on the roads in winter jams and gunks up all the hood mechanisms. I usually end up spraying a bunch of brake cleaner in there through the grill. Sometimes that works...
Here's a hint: if you're stuck by the side of the road and you need your hood opened ASAP with no access to getting in the vehicle. Just the facts, less talking, we need a solution ASAP not a commentary of your history being a mechanic. Non of it. How to open the hood from the outside. No offense, but it's NOT about you, It's not about you, it's about the solution. This context. WHY would someone click on this video?, HOW can I help them quickly? Thats all we need. Thanks.
I have a ford 1996 contour. Tried everything for a stuck latch. Last resort using a hole saw cut through Hood. (Huge resistance to doing this). Small Elliptical Rubber grill at front of car lifts slightly but cannot see latch assembly as plastic cover in the way of behind Assembly. Just on the off chance you might have an idea. I thought cut grill away and just drill blind through plastic and try fingers to open latch. Its been a holy grail of thinking a solution. Even prayed to god on this one. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Cheers Colin.
See if you can see the hood latch release from under the front bumper. If you can you might be able to use a long flathead screwdriver to push up on the hood release mechanism so it pops the hood. Hope this helps you out.
Someone backed into me and broke the grill.. It's an '04 F150 honeycomb grill.. Pull latch hood doesn't pop.. Looks like only available access is underneath what options are there..?
What about a car that's been in a rear ended wreck and the hood is bent half way so u cant see the lever or latch, can I take the whole latch and all off? Need to know asap

Yeah I was going to mention that you could also use brake cleaner to clean it off in the video, but got sidetracked..lol

You may have to see if you can unbolt the hood latch from the underside.

If the hood is mangled then yeah you may need to remove the latch so you can fix the hood and damaged parts
Why didn't you show how to pop it open?
Because it wasn't stuck. I am giving advice on what to do in the event that you need to release a stuck hood.
Does this work on mazda 01 protégé
You may be able to get the hood open using this method.
@@HomeOwnerRepair ok..

So the hood will pop open if u simply unbolt the screws?
If you can unbolt the hood latch it should open.
