    This Supersonic 22 is one of those amps on my radar along with a Bassbreaker 15. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe III that I really like and a Dr. Z Maz 18 Jr NR (no reverb) 112 combo that is my main amp. Love the videos!

    Thanks Phillip, I traded in some old gear and was supposed to put the money towards a AVRI Telecaster; but I left with the Supersonic 22 . Damn, I was disappointed cause the dough didn't go toward the Tele; but after watching this vid, I'm gonna keep the Supersonic cause it's friggin awesome!
    The guy's at Dave's guitars did steer me right; thanks again to them and you Phillip.

    I'm convinced. I'm buying a Supersonic 22 over the Bassbreaker 15. 1, The foot switch. 2, the gain channel. 3. FX loop. I'm definitely going to try one first because of the pop/noise issue. I'm using a Vox Night Train 15c right now. It's my first guitar amp and I'm ready for something new. Thanks for the reviews.

    I know I'm very late in posting here, but I just came across this demo (good one BTW....just could have added some lower gain settings, i.e. bluesy stuff). The main thing I wanted to comment on was the channel popping + reverb squealing. These two faults existed in many/most of the initial release. I'm shocked Fender blew you off on a fix. They became a tech. bulletin and were fixed free of charge under warranty (yes, mine was an early one that had the faults). I had no problem getting this done at an authorized Fender warranty repair station, free and quickly. When I bought mine, the head was not yet offered, or I would have gotten it. Very shortly thereafter they came out. I found a custom cab builder who made head cabs for the 1965 DRRI and we determined it was identical except for several cutouts on the back panel to access jacks. I got it for a very good price and made the conversion. I think this is a great amp and is so versatile that the only pedal I use is a JOYO Ironman Rated Boost (tiny little pedal) velcro'd to the top of the amp, in-the-loop, always ON, and switchable via the FS loop button. Gives a volume boost to both channels for soloing.

  • @sudburyman8775
    @sudburyman8775 8 років тому +1

    The pop comes from a capacitor keeping its DC charge while switching over. The cure is a bleed resistor, usually. Schematics for your version and the one you once owned are available and if you check in the vicinity of the relays you might be able to spot the differences if the circuit has been fixed.

    I have the Super Sonic 60 and it's great. Your review has been really helpful thank you! Question about the effects loop and distortion: I really love the distortion on the amp, but I also use distortion pedals on the clean channel for different songs, and I'm looking at different ways to stack on top of the built in distortion or clean channels. Because distortion typically is in the front of the signal chain, what effect would putting a distortion pedal in the effects loop have since it would then be after the pre-amp? What are some simple and useful ways to get different distortion sounds using the effects loop (either separating or within), distortion channel, and clean channel with pedals for shows and easy transitions between them?

    Beautiful amp, looks like it fell out of the 70's. looking for higher gain myself but I loved playing fender back about a decade ago and played nothing but and this is damned tempting with a good pedal. Would have bought this in a heartbeat, I'm going to have to grab one in a year or two.
    Also that fender Pop is not just on this model, I've heard that on several fenders that I've used, that were pre 2000. Never thought anything of it, was pretty bad on a particular black faced twin I had.

    I can’t believe the 594 didn’t make it off the wall. Haha. These amp when first released were 60 and 100 watts and were setup the same on the front panel but the clean switch went from a vibrolux clean to a bassman circuit. The new ones are different. The output section on the new 22 watt versions are also different. The new one is based off a deluxe reverb output stage and the old ones were 60 and 100 watts so it was different and original to those amps. That may have been part of the popping problem Phillip was talking about, but I don’t know. I’m glad they fixed that popping, and I’m glad it’s 22 watts but I preferred the older clean channel to the newer one. There was a dramatic difference. Also the font that said supersonic was different and it had a salt and pepper type grill cloth to the now oxblood or traditional black and silver. Overall great amps though.

Anyway, the supersonic 22 sounds great and I need something for live sound. Do you think this will cut through? The closest place that has one is guitar center in Louisville KY. I have a Fender American Standard too, bought back in 2008. I hope the supersonic does the trick.

  • @tub8r
    @tub8r 4 роки тому +1

    I had a chance to play the Super-Sonic 22 head at a store through a large Fender 2x12 cabinet. It sounds really sweet and had nice versatility with the clean Fat switch and the combinations of the two Gains on the overdrive channel.
    It has a nice full size real spring reverb tank, which sounded nicely. No tremolo though.
    With the effects loop I was thinking to compare it with a Hot Rod Deluxe (BTW why there's no HRD head?) But no they are different animals. the Super Sonic sounds more like DRRI. Then I was wondering if it has the same inherent in many DRRI issue (esp. Custom 68s with the hotter negative feedback) - the high noise floor, the hissing at low volume or even 1 volume (HRD have no noise issues). And yes, that particular unit had that hissing noise. Specifically with ambient quiet room level of 29 dB, the no signal 1 volume 22 was producing 45 dB of hiss. This means for home use or recording, it would be very annoying once you turn it on every time. For DRRI I found a trick - AB splitting the input with B inverted and feeding in both channels. But 22 has only one input.
    So noise level was a put off. I wonder if someone knows of a trick workaround?

    Hi.
    Good channel here !
    I have a question: do you think it could be possible mod this head in order to add a switch to the "gain 2" circuit to make on/of for it ?
    I see that gain2 knob could be at zero and the amp will sound with only gain 1 going. So this is my queation.
    Make of this amp a 4 channel amp.
    You say in the video that is not a feature of this amp bit would it be a possible mod for it ?

    Picked one up used for a lot less than a deluxe reverb. Thought I might be unhappy for having not spent the extra money, it’s just not the case. The normal channel does end up sounding like a Vibralux, or a black face DR. The fat setting sounded horrible on every UA-cam video I heard. It sounds so much better live. Knowing I can get a couple of great Boogie sounds out of the second channel is a huge plus! They are a little too pricey new, but used they are a great value.

  • @MessiahofFire
    @MessiahofFire 8 років тому +1

    gain channel sounds great... though its wattage, price and gain tone don't quite match a 6505, its far superior clean tone and footswitch can easily make up for it... asuming it's still loud enough to be heard amid a full band (which it likely is, given the ludocrous volumes acieved by even lower powered valve amps).

    Excellent combination of Fender clean and Boogie-esque cascading gain. Is there enough clean headroom for live playing? Or would you have to get a more efficient speaker?

      it will be close, but for small gigs the clean should work

    Phil, did you ever own a Blues Deluxe, and did you like it?

    I've had a Hot Rod Deluxe for about 8 or 9 years now... I always prefer to get dirt from the amp rather than a pedal if I can, but the Deluxe's drive channel just doesn't cut it. So I'm looking for a Fender toned amp with a decent drive channel... Something tight with good bass response. I've heard good things about these Supersonics, but they are not cheap.

    Hi Phil I was wondering what’s the best settings you recommend for the clean channel to run pedals with? Right now I been using the fat mode treble on 6-7 and bass on 6-7
