    Just to add context:
The crash did hurt Concordes reputation for a little, but that wasn’t the reason the program ended.
The reason the program was canned is because of a few factors, one being the post 9/11 downturn, and rising maintenance and operational costs.
Concorde burned a SHIT ton of fuel.

@@simoncourtney1592 Where did you get that from. Just look how much fuel the concorde uses. The concorde uses 25000 litres of fuel per hour and carries 100 people in what are basically economy class seats, a boeing 747 Consumes 15000 litres of fuel per hour and carries up to 524 people. Now consider a seat on the concorde is up to 18000 dollars and you will see why airlines had to rely on glamor to sell tickets. That's not merely an excuse, that's airlines trying to get off a clearly unsustainable business model.

    • @eatshit8034
      @eatshit8034 2 роки тому +19

@@simoncourtney1592 Your neighbor was the captain of a concorde? Cool, im currently in uni studying several aspects of aviation. The Concorde was a doomed project from the start. A nightmare to produce, being severely overbudget, being stupidly inefficient at slow speeds burning a cars weight in fuel just taxiing, the 747 burns half that while carrying 3-4 times the passenger load. Both Air France and British Air, originally refused to purchase the aircraft, so the government sold the aircraft to them at $1 a frame.
It was a delicate piece of shit, requiring many specialized components. Heavy on the maintenance, and overly expensive to operate, and unlike most airliners. The Concorde had a very short service cycle, due to issues regarding the airframe.
And it was a fuel hungry monster. Fuel is one of the biggest expenses for an airline and the concorde became simply to costly to continue to operate.
Did we want her gone? No not really. In actuality the concorde received special treatment from the US gov. Despite being in utter violation of noise regulations and several other environmental policies.
Like it or not, The US was just as proud to have the concorde as the british and french were. But as others already pointed out. The downturn in 2001 cemented the downfall of the Concorde. And if it had somehow comtinued flying past 2001. It would have been retired come 2008.

The metal strip didn't actually get sucked into the engine. The strip punctured a main landing gear tire which sent the remains into the wing fuel tank rupturing it and spilling fuel along with severing landing gear controls with gave the now leaking fuel an ignition source thus setting the engin and surrounding areas on fire, which is why engaging the fire emergency systems on the engine failed to do anything.
As for the company going under. They tried to make the aircraft as safe as possible giving many redesigns to the landing gear. The fuel tanks, the under belly, etc. They then proceeded to go and put these new safety measures on all their planes but the expense was too high, the reputation (as far as i know this was their only crash to) was destroyed, and they ran out of money thus leading to them closing their doors permanently. So sad to see a company bleed themselves dry to try and make their planes safer

I know like 10 people have already commented this but the crash in 2000 (Air France Flight 4590) was due to a piece of metal on the runway that came from a DC-10 (which had a really bad reputation for safety) that had used the runway earlier, which punctured the Concorde's tire which caused a fire. Because of this, the engines on the left side of the wing were running low on power which caused the Concorde to crash into a nearby hotel because it wasn't going fast enough to lift up. Everyone on board died.

The Concord was unpopular for how loud it was as well, people who lived near airports had to hear it as it was low to the ground and going supersonic. AirFrance flight 4950 was caused by a piece of a DC-10-30, which took of before it, slicing the tire of the Concord and the rubber was sent flying into the left wing, rupturing a fuel tank. Even after AirFrance flight 4590, the Concord was said to be one of the safest aircraft in the world, the main problems were the cost, for both manufacture, and people who wanted to fly on it, and the noise it made.

Also the planes could fit way less people inside the planes, and since the cost to make this flight was so high, ticket prices would be absurd.

Also a major factor that led to the failure of the Concorde is that, a lot of people would prefer laying down on a flat seat(Business & First class) for 5 hours to get themselves rested than to sit in a seat that is similar to Economy on the Concorde for 3 hours when the prices were similar. Some cases even showed the Concorde was more expensive than a business class or first class seat

I’m pretty sure the real reason the Concord program was shut down was because of the rolling sonic booms that followed the plane and disturbed local residents. It was banned from several airports and began losing revenue because of the limited flight options.

  • @DarthGeo

One of the main reasons it was discontinued was because as it flew over head it made deafening repeated sonic booms as a result of its speed which resulted in those who lived on its routes being angry and the companies narrowed down the routes they could take until it reaches none

It was also canceled becuse of when it passes the sound barrier it craes a loud explotion type of sound. This sound on the ground can be compared with the sound of a handgun fireing, a lawnmower produce 90db, sporting events/live music 105db.
When a jet is breaking the sound barrier it produce a sound of 200db. If you are tailing behind it its enough to damage your intearnal organs.

Another issue with the Concorde was the sounds it would make flying at super sonic speeds, it would sometimes shatter windows and cause temporary hearing loss.
And so, some states and countries banned the Concorde from ever flying in their airspace.

Another reason is that severely limited this plane was because of the sonic booms these planes would imit flying over populated areas. So they would have been limited to Transoceanic flights.

The concord also wasn't allowd to fly over land in supersonic because of the sonic boom being soo loud and strong it would brake window's on the groind and damige hearing in some cases. So the concord was only allowed to fly over water and small bits of land if it was gowing slower than supersonic.

It's crazy how most stories about the Concorde fail to mention how bloody loud the thing was. I mean, it needed to go supersonic, so that means hella big and powerful engines, which means really fucking loud.

"Far ahead of its time"... 12 years *after* the XB-70 bomber.
The "back in time" thing happened when flying westward. It was faster than the rotation of the earth, so it could take off at, say, 9:00AM local time from London, and land in New York at 8:00AM local time, ready for second breakfast and a long, slow trip from the airport.
(Part of the reason it failed is that short flying time doesn't reduce overall trip time so much, especially when there are few flights.)

Concord was one of the best planes to ever live and there still is some around the world. But what you said at the end was incorrect the program never shut down. They stopped flying the planes and then a upgrade for then came out some planes where converted and letter stopped for safety conserins but the super sonic program has not stopped and they still trying to find out how to make a newer plane. Concorde alpha alpha is deployed in the Edinburgh museum of flight with other great, epic aircraft and if you in Edinburgh I recommend seeing it as it is still great if your not into aircraft.
