I just sold my twin. I just had stopped using it. You are so right about that beautiful reverb decay. Nothing else beats it. Now I may try to get it back!
My early 70's silverfsce never breaks up. With the anvil case, 90 plus lbs. It served me well for about 15 yrs. From the late 70's through early 90's. Loves analog pedals. Great memories. God bless one and all.
The Fender Twin Reverb is so cool! I had one when I was young (many moons ago) and able to carry it around to gigs, LOL! Now, I have a Fender Deluxe Reverb (although it still weighs 42lbs) that I'll use until I can't haul it around either. BTW-I love your Mardi Gras flag. My wife and I live on the parade route in New Orleans, so we have MAJOR parties!
I went to a friend’s rehearsal studio where he had a 70’s Twin, plugged into it with a Nobles overdrive in front & it just laid in the mix perfectly. What a great amp! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge & experience🎼🎸
Thanks for sharing your perspective and the mids tip Shane. Workhorses are workhorses for a reason. That was good advice for someone who might have to deal with backline equipment. When we show up and are required to use any (hopefully reliable) piece of gear that is not our particular brand (in my case, it might be an organ), our job is to lean into whatever qualities that gear has to offer and make music. I always get something of value out of your presentations.
Twin owner and lover here. I think you explain what people need to hear... they sound great at low volumes! All the time, people say they are too loud. Well, they CAN be. Don't turn them up that much. 😂 great video. Thx
Beginner/ intermediate player here, and a proponent of budget gear.. ( Epi Casino into Bugera V5 into a 1x12 celestion cab… blues driver , DS1 , behringer analog delay , Danelectro EQ…. ) but man I love your channel and love learning about all this wonderful gear that’s out there..! I’ve been a fan of yours since I saw you on all those LFDH episodes… and even a bigger fan now!!
Nice lesson and what a tone to anyone but especially a new learner. Some of these tips I must put in my back pocket for when advancing. Again, what a beautiful sound and thanks, Shane.
Fellow Twin enjoyer here with some additional thoughts: It just looks cool. I don't know why because it's so typical black-and-silver Fender, but the dimensions are just super-pleasing. It also has two speakers and, as we all know, more speakers = more better. Finally, it has a reputation. People who see it know what it's capable of and will flinch, then gradually creep closer to gawk at its power. Great channel, ST. Keep 'em coming.
I miss mine. I had a mid 60's Twin that someone put Altec 417's into. Was so loud my parents said it shook the house. Some of the best tone out of that amp. Great Video!
I love your playing Shane. I had a silver face twin, early '70's model at the time CBS was supposedly cutting corners with the quality, but to me it sounded great. I was playing in a band doing all the motown stuff and I loved that I could stay clean and still be heard next to the drummer. I emigrated from UK to Oz in the 90's and loved it so much that I packed it up and shipped it out there but somebody must have dropped it from a great height in transit because when it arrived the speakers were no longer attached and the front plyboard was wrecked which I replaced. Amp still worked though and sounded great even with the speakers hanging out.
they are built well. Fed Ex destroyed a Bassman I had in a flight case by dropping it off of a fork lift...wouldn't honor the insurance claim either. Luckily most of the time they can be fixed.
What a killer video! Thanks for sharing. I randomly picked up a 67 SF Twin at O'Dibella Music in Bergenfield, NJ about 15 years ago. May have paid $800. What a lucky score. It needed a little work but the amp was just so versatile and moved air really well. I swapped in some WGS ET 65 speakers, the amp killed. Took pedals all day long and had the best cleans, maybe ever. Still think I prefer my AA864 Bassman though. Easier to carrier.
I had a silverface Twin Reverb that I bought new in 76, I think. It had a master volume control that you could pull out. That was before we had good overdrive pedals. I liked it a first but gradually grew tired of it and sold it around 82. It had a good clean sound but that was about it. It was very reliable though and never let me down. It was a great rhythm amp but not a good lead amp, there was no tube breakup, just like you said. But you sound absolutely great playing through your Twin.
I have owned 2 of these beauties, everything you describe is 100% true, the premium amp, it is very heavy to carry but just the most superb clean head room, and pedal platform, love them
I still am the original owner of my 1976 super twin that has no reverb unfortunately and is 180 watts because it’s has 6-6L6 power tubes and it is loud as hell. Seriously loud. But the clean tone of this amp is ridiculous and sounds amazing, and handles any pedals you wanna put through it. It is a well built serious amp. Ted Nugent would have a wall of these same fender super twins and super twin reverbs combined when playing live at outdoor stadiums. And I believe that he would use all of them at the same time. That’s one of the reasons why they called him the motor city madman. like I already stated, my super twin didn’t come with reverb, it did come with a five band EQ, presence, and distortion controls. I don’t think I could ever sell it, I’ve had it for 48 years and still use it, but I certainly don’t take it out to play anymore even though it has casters, Those days are long gone.
Shane, I really enjoyed this... I have a couple of Black Face Fender Showman heads ( a Twin in a head w/o Reverb ), a '66 and a '68. I play them through a 1x12 cab, w/ a Fat Jimmy speaker in it, in my home, on "3"... as you have your's, and it's my favorite amp, by far! I have a few other really nice amps... Germino, a couple of Carol Anns, Louis Electric, Mesa Boogie Mk II, and my '68 Showman, which just has regular modern JJ tubes in it, is the one that I play almost all of the time. I just love the tone, the richness. I find myself frequently just thinking, while I am playing, Man I love this amp! I am spoiled ! Lol... I realize that I could sell all of the rest of my amps and I could be happy with just this Showman Head and a 1x12 cab for the rest of my days and be VERY happy !
Dude, I love that playing clean seems to be a big part of the fabric of your thing. There are a lot of players who seem to be afraid of playing completely clean, and I don’t get it. I love overdrive pedals just as much as the next guy, or plugging into a Gainey amp/exploring the full range of volume and tone controls on the guitar. But all that aside, sometimes I just love going straight into a clean amp and enjoying the pickup positions/right hand technique stuff for what it has to offer. All this to say, I Doug this video and yes, to diming the mids on blackface circuits. Great way to not get lost in the mix playing a Strat too
Such a great channel! I recognised you from the Darryl's house video with Billy Gibbons. I spent a lot of time trying to work out the amazing slippy-slidy descending lick you did in the Sharp Dressed Man video (where Billy goes 'I like!'). Perhaps you could do a video on that one day because I'm sure I still get it wrong!
I have a Twin that was modified by Andy Fuchs which is really cool. Andy called it an “evil twin” as it has an overdrive channel. The clean sound on it is great.
My only twin experience was a 1978 silverface with the push/pull master volume, that I got in the early 90s. Either I was too young and inexperienced to make it sound good, or it was just a dreadful sounding amp. Probably the former....😂 Love the channel Shane! 🙌
I LOVE the channel! You are obviously a great player and you seem like a great guy. May I make a suggestion? The lighting is harsh. You're a good looking guy and that strong white light washes you out. It makes it a bit tough to watch. Having said that, thanks for all of the great videos!
I hear ya on the lighting! I'll try to improve it for future videos. Believe it or not I've spent so much time and bought different lights etc...and it's something I totally struggle with. Thanks for watching though
🤓Yeah man... I was weened on my grandpa's '61, no reverb but the vibrato/tremolo is so good. I just sold it a few years ago, I'm sure they're having fun with it 😁 Now I have one of the '57 Customs I found that had taken a pretty good fall and pulled the chassis screws through the top and a crack in the side. I fixed it all up and got it a tune up, and for a third of the price of a new one 🥳...
1987 i think. Sound Control music Shop in Glasgow. Awesome Guy tried to convince me to buy an old fender twin reverb that was used by big country. I was so into U2 and delays at the time that I seriously wanted 2 combos in stereo. Wasted years with Laney linebackers and peavey bandits. Tried PA direct. Played gigs. It worked but now i know what the guy meant. You can't beat a valve amp for sound and tone. 10 years after that day i walked into another guitar Shop in Glasgow. Played Marshall MG combo then realised it was the same guy. I could tell he recognised me because he looked really pissed off. I walked away. Emigrated to Australia and finally bought a vox ac15 a gibson les paul and since then a Marshall combo. He was right. But he couldn't find the way to communicate with me. So we all have a long road. Spending money on gear that never pleases us. Until we buy the real thing. Stay cool. And BTW. I now hate U2 and I'm enjoying learning real guitar.
I'm curious about the 1972-73 models with the master volume. That's what Steve Jones used with the Sex Pistols and it sounds very distorted and great. AFAIK he didn't use any overdrive or distortion pedals.
took a 71 silverface twin reverb, and rebuilt the normal channel into a Marshall plexi circuit, and rebuilt the other channel into brown vibroverb circuit. also an attenuator transformer on the back. red elephant tolex and zebra plush front with 2 vintage 30's. flipped it for a modeling amp
Ive never had a real Twin, I’ve always stayed away from them cause I thought they were too loud and too clean, oh and too heavy. I have a Headrush modeller and by far my favourite amp in it is the Twin! However, it’s very easy to turn it down 😂
If I was worried about getting a breakup at low volume, I would not buy a twin. Maybe a deluxe or Princeton. But a Fender Twin is a top amp and sounds great .
yeah it's not the amp for that. But a good OD pedal and it sounds great at low volume if that's what you need it for. Princeton is probably better if you aren't out gigging and mostly play at home
I run into reissue Twins in backline situations a lot and they always make me kind of sad. I’m going to try your settings next time to see if I have better luck
thanks! I have had a few people ask me this- answer is I have never played through it. I did however watch one blow up on stage..John oates brought one to an arena gig and was bragging about it and how light it was....well it didn't make it halfway through the set and just fried. Not sure what happened there.....but i'm not much on the digital modeling amps I've tried so far. Something about the feel of them. It's like using stevia instead of sugar haha
I'd be curious to know what you think of the Fender Tone Master series? Is it worth the trade off for the weight and the ability to attenuate the volume to achieve break up at lower levels?
Well honestly I haven't played through one myself but I watched one of them blow up on stage- John Oates had one and it didn't even make it half way through the set. It was light though ;). But like I said in the video, if you are looking for amp break up this isn't the amp for you. Clean headroom with pedals is where it's at with the Twin.
@@TheRiotguitar 😂Wow that's not a great endorsement😂I did a few gigs with the Deluxe Tone Master a while back but never really liked it. The Marshall DSL has always been my go to for live shows but lately Ive been doing some gigs where I need more of a Fender tone. I've opted for the Blues Junior as cheaper option but I have to say I love the tone you are getting with the Twin. BTW are you planning any more releases? I loved Still Motion👌Was it a Twin you were using on that album?
Sounds the business. Still don’t fancy lugging it about haha. Getting lazy in my old age. I’ve just downsized to a princeton. I dont need a lot of volume. But I’m my younger days I’d happily carried one of them about to get a sound like that.
I've got one they are great , 1973 , but heavy , but I wouldn't sell it . if you fiddle about with the master volume & volume you can get beautiful rich sounds ,.
If anyone has a problem getting a good gain sound from a twin reverb all they need is a king of tone or one of it's many clones also a Timmy sounds killer I was gonna give the Timmy to my friend Tim as a gift but it sounded so good on the twin reverb I couldn't give it up alot of my pedals don't sound great on my twin reverb until I realized I was using pedals not designed for it
King of tone is great, I use it wth the Twin sometimes. Like I said in the vid though with the mid control on the amplifier it's pretty easy to get a useable tone with pretty much any OD pedal.
@@TheRiotguitar Everyone said it at one time. At my age of 60. Everything was heavy in the 1970s and 80's. No idea what episodes, but yes Bukovac repeated it in more than a few videos. Actually played with David Lindley at a club gig way back in the day. One Dumble combo amp a couple volume pedals and a shit load of instruments is what he had. Was counting on my jbl loaded Twin if the Dumble went down. He sat in for Aiko Aiko with my band that was warming El Rayo X up.
Don't crucifie me. But i bought a Fender Twin reverb blonde tone master with 2x12 neodymium creambacks. Man, i love the tone im getting. What do you think of those??
i'm not familiar with the Tone masters. Like I had commented to someone else I did witness one of them blow up on stage...John Oates had one and it lasted about half a set at an arena. Maybe it was just a lemon though? My theory is...if it sounds good it IS good. So seems like you got it going on...thx for watching!
I had the red knob twin, it was a great sound, but not very well made, it weighed so much it left a dent in the earths crust And the drive sound was pants
I picked up a 1976 silverface a year ago and my god is it heavy. Would not recommend as a gigging amp especially with today's digital options. THAT BEING SAID, stop being weak and haul your +100lb tone machine into that bar and play the damn thing! What draws me to this amp is it has this amazing bell-like quality to every note, the overtones are ridiculous. My amp was modded by the previous owner and is technically an overseas Twin Amp(it has a preset voltage attenuator for different countries). It currently has a celestion g12k and weber California. Highly recommend this beast.
This is becoming my favorite channel. Tim Pierce, That Pedal Show, Uncle Larry, Guthrie, eat your heart out.
thanks for helping spread the word! Most of those guys are all friends of mine so much appreciated
I agree with everything you said in this video! I have a 72 Twin, bought it new, have had it all these years! Love it! Thanks for the video!

My God What a Guy that knows about the Twin I’ve got one but would not have a clue how to dial it in! Thanks Shane 🙏👍
LUUUUUUVVV my Twin! Amp.... Only one of me... Awesome vid mate! Love the skills.
thanks!
Twin owner and lover here. I think you explain what people need to hear... they sound great at low volumes! All the time, people say they are too loud. Well, they CAN be. Don't turn them up that much. 😂 great video. Thx
exactly haha I always thought the same- any amp is TOO loud if you turn it up too much.- they have a sweet spot way low on the dial too
I keep mine at 2.8 and it sounds great. Sounds better at 3, but the glass in my windows starts to rattle. 🤣
@@mattolenn strange, mine is not crazy loud at 3. Maybe because it's an old one I dunno

Great playing, as always. Toy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band wailed on a pair of Fender Twins..no pedals...Some of the best tone on the planet.
I'm going to have to check out some Marshall Tucker Band now!
Watching a cool Uncle Larry video where he was talking about amps too. Great stuff. Love learning about these things 👍 Thanks.

The night before you uploaded this I was scouring the internet for... well... exactly what this video does. Glad I came back for another search
very cool!
I love your playing Shane. I had a silver face twin, early '70's model at the time CBS was supposedly cutting corners with the quality, but to me it sounded great. I was playing in a band doing all the motown stuff and I loved that I could stay clean and still be heard next to the drummer. I emigrated from UK to Oz in the 90's and loved it so much that I packed it up and shipped it out there but somebody must have dropped it from a great height in transit because when it arrived the speakers were no longer attached and the front plyboard was wrecked which I replaced. they are built well. Fed Ex destroyed a Bassman I had in a flight case by dropping it off of a fork lift...wouldn't honor the insurance claim either. Luckily most of the time they can be fixed.
just subbed . Tasty playing and yeh Twin Reverb is a fantastic amp . The reverb and tremolo are pure gold !
thx!
Easier to carrier.
great story- those speakers probably sound great in there
I had a 60s blackface, loved it, used to set the reverb at about 2.5 and mostly played a 335 at the time. What a sound.
great combo

that sounds like a good one

Sounds the business. Still don’t fancy lugging it about haha. Getting lazy in my old age. I’ve just downsized to a princeton. I dont need a lot of volume. But I’m my younger days I’d happily carried one of them about to get a sound like that.
yeah they can be a chore to carry around. Princeton is a fine amp too.
Have a 67 Fender twin with Jensen‘s C 12 N speakers in it. A great sounding amp. But it is a little too heavy for me.
they aren't the lightest amps that's for sure.....
When I first started gigging I had a mesa tremoverb combo. Holy S**T it had to have been 100lbs 😂
Could have bought a 70s twin in ‘86 for $400. Couldn’t afford it so I wound up with a ‘74 Peavey Classic for $150. Wish I had both now.
i had a Classic 30 long ago. It sounded good but wasn't built that well for what I remember. The older Peavey stuff was good stuff though.
What did Bukovac say? Good tone is heavy and hard to move? Or something like that.
hmm i wouldn't know about that but I read an interview where David Lindley said that 20 years ago
Man, great playing and that DS1 sounded super cool. You muhht want to think about your use of the word Wank for your UK viewers sake though 😂
glad you caught that! i knew exactly what i was saying haha..."having a wank" I heard my Brit friends say that about jamming
@TheRiotguitar ooooh. It had another specific meaning, and you wouldn't want to be doing It on youtube.
I had the red knob twin, it was a great sound, but not very well made, it weighed so much it left a dent in the earths crust
And the drive sound was pants
Robben Ford loved those, he even used the drive channel too. I tried to pick one of those up they are way heavier than the blackface Twins
Great for clean jazz sounds too plugged straight in with a good hollow body archtop.
86 watts?
i think so yes
90% talk. Typical american?
hmmm go figure and here I am thinking there was TOO much playing.....
Cuz he's communicating important information, not just another youtuber padding it out with smooth jazz instro tracks.
You are making it sound great and love what you are playing @TheRiotGuitar 🎶
I picked up a 1976 silverface a year ago and my god is it heavy. Would not recommend as a gigging amp especially with today's digital options. THAT BEING SAID, stop being weak and haul your +100lb tone machine into that bar and play the damn thing!
What draws me to this amp is it has this amazing bell-like quality to every note, the overtones are ridiculous. My amp was modded by the previous owner and is technically an overseas Twin Amp(it has a preset voltage attenuator for different countries). It currently has a celestion g12k and weber California. Highly recommend this beast.
