- Colorful game show creator and host Chuck Barris has died at age 87. Known for creating “The Dating Game” and “The Newlywed Game” and as both host and creator of “The Gong Show,” a precursor of contemporary TV reality competitions, Barris died in his home in Palisades, New York.

Loved Chuck Barris and the Gong Show....two American treasures!!💙💜😥🙏
The Gong Show was such an important part of our daytime television and Chuck Barris touched all of our lives with his talent and comedy. He is greatly missed and I'm sure in Heaven he's got everyone laughing and has an endless pool of talented contestants. RIL (rest in laughter)!

Its depressing for us 70s kids to hear those last words at the end of this clip: "It was a little before my time". I guess you had to be there to love the most mindless 30 minutes of broadcasting...and that's exactly what made it so much fun. From Gene Gene to the Unknown Comic, Barris was true ringmaster of a TV circus. For fans who love the current-day Gong Shows that are on the air, Chuck truly was The Godfather of TV talent shows.

He was so cool with the tux, cowboy hat and Les Paul on The Gong Show. Such a great person. Side note, who's the co-host next to Matt who knows nothing of history and says " a little before my time". Her knowledge of history begins when she wakes up and ends when she goes to bed. Chuck lived a full life, creative, funny, hip as hell, made millions and lived in the south of France! I appreciate Matts input, the two others should play with their building blocks. How do folks like this get a career in television?

I don’t know if Chuck was a happy man but he sure did make a lot of people happy. ❤❤❤❤❤❤and he was a funny guy I miss his show.
He brought light into our house with the Gong Show..i actually ran home from school as a kid so i could watch it with my mom in the afternoons
