Hey Jrose, I love the way you do these videos. You do a great job explaining the mechanics of the game and your strategies. Keep it up! The rise in views is because of your consistent quality.
3:00 -- "Why would anyone use a Weedle" Funny enough, in Gen 1 games, I don't know if it is a glitch, but Poison type moves have a significantly higher probability rate of poisoning Pokemon that resist "Poison" attacks, excluding Poison types themselves since they cannot get Poisoned. So I personally frequently used Weedle/Kakuna/Beedril against Brock, especially when the Onix uses "Bide" in certain versions. I averaged a "Poison" status condition about 75% of every use of Poison-Sting against Rock-Type Pokemon throughout the game... ^^^Since that only ever happens in 1st Gen games, I always simply assumed it was a glitch somehow. Or it might be related to Speed akin to "Critical Hits" since all Rock-Type Pokemon are slower than Beedrill in-particular! Needless to say, poisoning Brock's Pokemon made facing him during the early game massively easier; because even if he cures the poisoning, that would simply give me a free turn to use "Poison-Sting" again. It is a surprisingly useful strategy.........
@@mistermr2147, Such as what? Are you wanting game coding?? Or are you simply wanting video proof??? Frankly, I don't know what I can provide that would convince you to be honest. Because if you don't believe me, then my best advise is to simply try it out for yourself. I'm fairly certain it was exclusively a "Gen 1" issue where any type that "resisted" Poison moves were more easily poisoned themselves. Kinda ironic, but it served as a fairly reliable strategy against Brock in-particular whenever I play through the original Red or Blue (or Green in Japan). Granted, maybe people weren't aware of this glitch because most people wouldn't intentionally use Poison-type attacks against enemies you know to be resistant toward it. My alternative strategy would usually entail getting a Fighting-type move from Mankey or Nidoran. But simply inflicting the "Poison" status condition was much easier... Granted, that's assuming you have enough defense to survive the battle for "Poison" to kill! Usually, I would start with Weedle until I successfully poison Brock's Geodude and Onix (which would typically only take 1 to 3 turns with "Poison-Sting"), then I would switch to a Pokemon with greater defense. Alternatively, if I have already evolved the Weedle into a Kakuna, then I would simply spam "Harden" while waiting for the opponent to die from "Poison". Not a particularly difficult strategy really... You should give it a try! Pretty much any noob can pull it off......... :-D
I've gotta get up early tomorrow so I can't watch this right now, but I'm super excited to watch it later! I LOVE not only the content, but the consistent uploads. (of course I'd be fine if they weren't consistent - this is not only quality, but free content. We can wait if you need breaks)

12:13 = Hold on. WHAT?! They give the Rival's Gyarados Hydro Pump THAT EARLY IN THE GAME?! I'll have to redo Solo-Cubone by making sure my rival starts with Bulbasaur instead of Squirtle next time. Seems like a Bulbasaur Rival would actually be harder for a Ground-type than a Squirtle Rival would be. 16:29 = Again, I always thought SPEED was the stat Surge's badge boosted. At least, that's what the game itself claims. Defense would be boosted by Koga's badge. (checks Bulbapedia) Well, I'll be a Mankey's uncle, the game lied to us AGAIN. Having a little trouble deciding right now whether Game Freak was worse back then or is worse now.
Yeah all trainer Gyarados have Hydro Pump regardless of their level, because Gyarados is programmed to know Hydro Pump naturally at level 1, which doesn't come into play for the player but since each AI trainer's pokemon have their moveset treated as if they were wild pokemon, their evolved pokemon know these "level 1 moves" you don't get access to. So if you're weak to both Grass and Water, or you're neutral against each starter, the Venusaur team is usually the best for the rival; he gets Gyarados with Hydro Pump and Dragon Rage as soon as Pokemon Tower while he doesn't get Arcanine and Exeggutor until the champion battle (while they also have shit movesets unlike the Gyarados), and then for a Grass type the Venusaur is a lot more threatening than the Exeggutor, since Exeggutor's moveset is just Hypnosis, Stomp, and Barrage.
@@OmegaTyrant Had to double-check Serebii for Gyarados' moves, but you're right. I didn't realize Hydro Pump was a Level 1 move for Gyarados in RGB, since you can't find wild Gyarados in RGB. And while Yellow does let you catch wild Gyarados, they changed its Level 1 moves to Tackle only. When I did my Cubone run, I had the rival pick Squirtle because I originally figured that was a bigger individual threat than Bulbasaur would be due to 1) Blastoise's higher Defense and 2) Cubone not learning anything to beat Water-types easily (Cubone can learn Ice and Fire attacks to wither Grass-types). But I found Lance's Gyarados to be the biggest threat in that run. Having to fight MULTIPLE Gyarados would be a drastic difficulty spike, especially with an actually competent Grass-type beside it four out of five times. Alright then, Cubone vs Bulbasaur Rival to be done... at some point soon.
@@RedSalamander Yeah the Blastoise is probably a bigger threat than the Venusaur to a Ground type, but Venusaur + Gyarados for the four later Rival fights is just going to be so much better than Blastoise + Exeggcute/Exeggutor (if only they thought to give the AI Exeggutor some sort of STAB move... even in Yellow they didn't fix that when they fixed other glaring moveset issues like Giovanni's pokemon not actually having Ground moves). Another point for Venusaur is if you're relying on Badge Boost stacks (such as with a Geodude and Onix run), it has Razor Leaf starting from Silph Co. with a nigh-guaranteed crit rate to just bypass your boosts and probably OHKO, so you have to knock it out in one hit or have to pray the RNG has it pick Solar Beam or Mega Drain (or Leech Seed and Vine Whip in earlier battles).
The amount of luck in this run was absolutely wild, and at some points almost necessary to save time level grinding. Have you done a Mankey solo run yet? I don't see it on the playlist but I could have missed it elsewhere. It could pose a massive challenge: - It only learns Low Kick in Yellow, so you wouldn't have it in Red/Blue against Brock. - Its level up moves are all Normal type aside from Seismic Toss at 33. - The only damaging moves it can learn by TM that aren't Normal or Fighting are Toxic, Dig, Rock Slide, and Thunder/bolt, which gives it pretty bad type coverage. - Dig is arguably the only consistently good TM choice (Rock Slide is unreliably inaccurate and Mankey has abysmal Special), though Toxic could potentially be helpful in the late game. - Its attack and speed are fairly good for a first-form, but the rest of its stats leave a lot to be desired. - Charmander as the rival's starter would probably be the hardest: -- Charizard has super effective STAB, is immune to Dig, resists Fighting, and is only weak to Rock Slide and Thunder/bolt (again, the former is inaccurate and Mankey has super low Special) -- The rival would also have Gyarados (same points as Charizard aside from SE STAB) and Exeggutor (a fairly bulky Psychic type). The only major battles that don't seem difficult on paper are Surge, Giovanni, and Lorelei (Slowbro will spam Amnesia and the rest are weak to Fighting); with stats and movepool in mind, even *Bruno* could be a challenge. I would love to see you pull this off.
Glad you became a frequent uploader man. My life fucking blows honestly. I have a mediocre job, a large family that I can't ever provide enough for. Shit house, shit car. These videos have honestly been something really nice to look forward to. Thanks Jrose.
I watched a Video yesterday, where someone did beat the game with just a weedle. It is in german though and it required a massive amount of reloading for every single member of the elite 4 + Champion. But it shows: it is actually possible.
I've seen the video (but not watched it yet). I don't understand how It's possible. With a perfect weedle I could never get past the last Giovanni, and absolutely no further.
Having Venusaur spam the Poison-move against Jiggly is secretly genius It knew the future, Jigglypuff's secret Fairy typing and kept clicking the super-effective move
This reminds me of when I was a kid. On my first playthrough when I was 5, I realized how broken sleep was and made my team focus entirely around my Venasaur using sleep powder and my Jigglypuff using Sing. And no, I did not evolve my Jigglypuff. Why? Because even though I had a guidebook that told me what moves Pokemon could learn, so I knew stone evolutions didn't learn new attacks, I didn't know when Jigglypuff would learn its last attack and I assumed the last attack would be the best, so I just never evolved it 😂 brilliant move kid me, brilliant. Either way, I still loved it. Jigglypuff is still a favorite of mine just for that

11:10 For some reason, whenever I fight a koffing (or wheezing) and don't have a psychic move (or ground type on Gen1 before levitate), I also use an electric move like thunderbolt. Even though I know it's not extra effective, and that most other types including normal would be just as effective. I have no idea why, maybe it subconsciously makes sense since it's floating in the air. I'm so glad I'm not the only one! 😂
9:40 "he should be demoted to Ensign Surge" *actually*, he's in the Army, therefore, Lieutenant is the lowest he can be demoted to, without being stripped of his comission for incompetence. Wouldnt the Squirtle one be a lot easier with withdraw? I would imagine a bulky special attacker most benefits from badge boost. I just cant legitimately imagine bulky water with a lot of coverage with badge boost being on the same level as super slow quad weak to everything 0 special geodude using the same strat. (Just finished an Oddish one myself, basically a bulbasaur run but no body slam i had to use double edge).
Sing for the day now, sing for the years, sing for the laughter, sing for the tears. Could you maybe do a video of these about a pokemon that the player normally doesnt get until later in the game? because all the pokemon thus far have been pokemon that a player could have used during a regular playthrough and thus kinda knows whats coming. But hardly anyone has ever played the game using lets say: rhyhorn or dratini. I think it would be cool to see those. Not only the early catchable ones :)
Even with its movepool, Rhyhorn might stand an actual chance against Brock due to sheer out-bulking. Chansey would be cool too. With its massive special it could be an absolute beast in the later game, but before it gets access to special TMs it's near worthless. We would probably see Bide used a lot as well because astronomically high HP and equally low defense make it a perfect candidate.
I Know it must be a struggle from time to time (pokemon joke here) working as a youtuber, but please never stop. You're damn good at making cool videos and your funny! Makes my day every time you upload.
i can barely beat pokemon with a full team and this guy does it with one character. it seems so fun. never really knew the mechanics in pokemon but these vids are cool
"Why would you be using Weedle" I mean, I presume you'll be using it at some point. I'm still annoyed that I got to Giovanni, and the closest I got was a double knock out on myself and the Rhydon. I mean my stats aren't amazing but still, maxed out my stat experience, level 100, even with godlike luck I still died to Struggle recoil. Also Bulbasaur does get a few status moves that could be used against Brock, and Ember could burn it, Butterfree can get powder moves too and confuse with Confusion. So it isn't as nonsensical for him to have Full Heals as you'd think.
Your analytical breakdown makes you one of the best Pokemon playthrough youtubers around! :D Since you haven't made a run with a fighting type yet, I suggest you use a Machop or a Mankey for your next playthrough.

E: now that I’ve seen it, I hadn’t thought about levels messing up the badge boost. Go figure that there’s a drawback to leveling up quickly.
Dratini next?
Gen l: the only one that makes you scream in frustration when you hit a Critical Hit or Level Up.
This series is fantastic and I'm so happy when I see another one come out, I pretty much exclusively watch your Pokemon content, feel like your commentary and person-ability is such a step above everybody else's in the same space. Eagerly waiting for Weedle run!
Jrose is great, but don't count Mah-Dry-Bread or Pikasprey out. Even though Pikasprey prefers to do variety content... and he mostly keeps his Pokemon stuff on his Blue channel these days. I think the variety content helps him stay more interesting.
... why are all of the best Pokemon youtubers Canadian
@@Kihanacloudy I do like Pikasprey, he just doesn't release content very quickly, I'm pretty sure I'm already caught up on everything I'd want to watch from his channel, didn't mention that in my original comment.
I'll have to double check his blue content
They're all Canadian because the best of us are the best of the world, can't say the same about the average Canadian though.

Quarantine is possible thanks to this. Keep it up pal!
Honestly the best content when it comes to pokemon challenges, when I watch a pokemon challenge video I wanna know the strategy, not just “grind until lvl 100” and you are far and away the best at coming up with out of the box strategies in these types of videos. Keep up the great work
I don't play Pokemon and don't watch any other Pokemon channels but I watch all your videos. Loving this series!

I wish there was a vid where you were like “can u beat the game with this pokemon “ and you just said no and the video was 2 seconds long
But he must stretch it to about 30 minutes so its not obvious

Hey Jrose, I love the way you do these videos. You do a great job explaining the mechanics of the game and your strategies. Keep it up! The rise in views is because of your consistent quality.

3:00 -- "Why would anyone use a Weedle"
Funny enough, in Gen 1 games, I don't know if it is a glitch, but Poison type moves have a significantly higher probability rate of poisoning Pokemon that resist "Poison" attacks, excluding Poison types themselves since they cannot get Poisoned.
Proof?
With all the Pokemon Conquest music you use, and the fact that you're using Jigglypuff, I'm surprised that you didn't name the player character Oichi and the rival Nobunaga XD. I know you probably won't see this comment, but will you ever do a Pokemon Conquest challenge run? There aren't any around, so it'll be a very unique video.

This is quickly becoming my favorite series on UA-cam. I don’t even like Pokémon that much but this series is amazing
I did not realize that Jigglypuff is tied for the 2nd-slowest pokemon in the game, 3rd-weakest def, and tied for 4th-weakest sp. def. Dear lord.
I love these challenges. I've watched all of them in just a few days, and I will definitely keep watching! Thank you for your hard work ❤️
Jigglypuff is a perfect example of a Pokémon that you could actually use bide with seeing as it has insane HP and really low defense
Massive HP + Low Defense? My first thought is that it sounds like Bide o'clock.
The Gym leaders were so confused watching this air balloon body slamming their Pokémon, they just used all the most hilarious items and moves.
3:06 "Why would you be using weedle"... The Question is 'Why not'... You sir just told us about your next challenge :))
fyi one of the reasons why i love these videos -- your voice and inflection and way of speaking are so perfect
Anime Logic: Everything goes to sleep, just run around and desert the trainers.
"Starts with only Sing," on the thumbnail put the fear of Arceus into me.
Another great video. This is the only Pokemon content I consume these days. These are just so good that I watch them all
The amount of luck in this run was absolutely wild, and at some points almost necessary to save time level grinding.
Have you done a Mankey solo run yet? I don't see it on the playlist but I could have missed it elsewhere. It could pose a massive challenge:
- It only learns Low Kick in Yellow, so you wouldn't have it in Red/Blue against Brock.
- Charmander as the rival's starter would probably be the hardest:
-- Charizard has super effective STAB, is immune to Dig, resists Fighting, and is only weak to Rock Slide and Thunder/bolt (again, the former is inaccurate and Mankey has super low Special)
-- The rival would also have Gyarados (same points as Charizard aside from SE STAB) and Exeggutor (a fairly bulky Psychic type).
Thanks for the recommendation, I just watched it. The question is, do we really want to torture jrose like this?!
Yeah I also saw that one before
I've seen the video (but not watched it yet). I don't understand how It's possible. With a perfect weedle I could never get past the last Giovanni, and absolutely no further.
Having Venusaur spam the Poison-move against Jiggly is secretly genius
It knew the future, Jigglypuff's secret Fairy typing and kept clicking the super-effective move
Jigglypuff is still a favorite of mine just for that
5 year old me got stuck at Erika with... Charizard. I'm pretty sure I taught it cut too
I really love the whole series you‘re doing. In fact I love it so much, I immediately knew which run you were talking about (where you discovered he has 5 full heal) :D already looking forward to the next runs :)

For some reason, whenever I fight a koffing (or wheezing) and don't have a psychic move (or ground type on Gen1 before levitate), I also use an electric move like thunderbolt. Even though I know it's not extra effective, and that most other types including normal would be just as effective. I have no idea why, maybe it subconsciously makes sense since it's floating in the air. I'm so glad I'm not the only one! 😂
I love your videos. Your commentary style where you go in depth and really explain and such is super enjoyable.
I look forward to more!

9:40 "he should be demoted to Ensign Surge" *actually*, he's in the Army, therefore, Lieutenant is the lowest he can be demoted to, without being stripped of his comission for incompetence. “It has nothing to do with the Badge Boost Glitch”
Oh... so this is what betrayal feels like
Wouldnt the Squirtle one be a lot easier with withdraw? I would imagine a bulky special attacker most benefits from badge boost. I just cant legitimately imagine bulky water with a lot of coverage with badge boost being on the same level as super slow quad weak to everything 0 special geodude using the same strat. (Just finished an Oddish one myself, basically a bulbasaur run but no body slam i had to use double edge).
I think that run was done before Jrose fully understood the badge boost glitch, so I don't think he even used Withdraw when he did Squirtle.
@@tylerlarsen1842 No, he didn't use withdraw. Would be interesting to see him do a Squirtle run using such...
He underestimated it, but yeah it's just easier with withdraw, you can win sub-level 60.
@@tylerlarsen1842 Mostly true, he did understand it but somehow still underestimated it
Sing for the day now, sing for the years, sing for the laughter, sing for the tears.
These challenges are super fun to watch. Thanks for making them, it's been a lot of help :)
It’s fun to pretend Jigglypuff’s back sprite is actually Kirby throwing his arms up in frustration
Its just really satisfying to watch, like someone doing the dirty work for interesting questions and concepts I have for pokemon.
That Ensign Surge joke killed me! Poor Surge doesn't do pokemon very well this battle.

I appreciate your willingness to actually play around with all these pokemon.
i can barely beat pokemon with a full team and this guy does it with one character. it seems so fun. never really knew the mechanics in pokemon but these vids are cool
Your PFP is cute :)
Your analytical breakdown makes you one of the best Pokemon playthrough youtubers around! :D Since you haven't made a run with a fighting type yet, I suggest you use a Machop or a Mankey for your next playthrough.
I just realized other than Bruno, I haven't, I'll do one soon!
I did this too just a few days before you uploaded this. I had a much easier time, but I took my time and fought all the trainers I could, so I was at a much higher level. Props for making it work in tougher conditions!
