In the library of Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night, you can find a Stone Mask, the mask itself is often thought to be a reference to the long running manga series, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The mask is a reference to Part 1: Phantom Blood, in which the villain Dio Brando uses the mask to turn himself and others into powerful vampires. The location of the mask may also be a reference to the library where Jonathan "Jojo" Joestar and his adopted brother, Dio Brando studied the mask.
***** There are trolls on UA-cam and there are funny people, and you are one of the funny ones, the funniest of the funny. (this one is a bit more obscure)
Here's something else not many people know. Alucard is not a vampire. He's a dhampir :) A dhampir is a human/vampire hybrid. Dhampirs were very useful to the superstitious community because, being half vampire, they can see vampires for what they are even if the vampires are invisible or have transformed into an animal. Towns would hire dhampirs to find and kill vampires, for a fee of course. Much of the time the dhampirs could talk to the vampires and convince them to leave. Some dhampirs, such as Alucard, loathe their vampiric lineage and do truly act like humans and will kill the vampires that seem to be causing trouble. The dhampirs that followed this path in life joined gangs of human hunters to track down vampires, even their own family in some instances. Naturally, the human hunters were more than pleased at gaining an immortal member with inside information.
+Chris Westergaard Sorry for the late reply. Actually "Tepes" is not written with simple "T" and "s" letters. In romanian both these letters have a second variation that have a comma right under them and are pronounced "ts" and "sh" respectively. "Tepes" is written with these letters thus being "Tsepesh". Hope this helped :)
This was the best DYKG yet. All these cool tidbits show just how much effort goes into these excellent games. So many memories watching these boss fights.
The way Markiplier pronounces Vlad Țepeș is not quite correct..almost,it's CLEAR he's not from Romania. :)) The accent in "Țepeș" is placed at the beginning : TZE-pesh. Markilplier's version is Tze-PESH. It's sounds weird for romanians, like me for example. But it's ok Mark, you did a GREAT job with the narration of this video! :)
NightxofxDarkrai Yup,is more "relaxed" :) It's fine thou,it happens to ALL of us when we try to speak a different language. The first time is a little hard..
He got Neuschwanstein wrong too ^^ but I think it sound kinda cute. About the Tepes thing I cant say anything thou. Anyway what I wantet to say was it is nice to see that there are other poeple who take this as relexed as you when a non nativ mispronounces a word. I sady know a lot of poeple who get really angy over such thing.
CASTLEVANIA IS ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED GAME FRANCHISES OF ALL TIME. Veteran fans like me hate the new games. The old games actually stayed faithful to the storyline. I hate it when they change stuff around. Leave it alone!! A lot of people don't know that Walter Bernhard came before Dracula in the Castlevania games, even though the previous older games had the Belmont clan going after Dracula. Which means that Leon Belmont was the first Belmont. Once Walter was destroyed, then came along the Dracula era. The Lords of Shadow Castlevania basically changes all of that, and it sucks. Newer fans to the Castlevania games need to know the depth of the stories. That game just ruins everything. They need to go back and remake the older games and stop changing the damn stories! It's like going back and telling Zelda fans that Link wasn't the Hero of Time, it was someone else. -_-
As a "veteran fan" I can see where you're coming from. There was a rich story happening. Except there really, at it's core, wasn't. Castlevania 1 was Monster Mash in game form. Ok, cool. Castlevania 2 was "Ok, let's try something different." It was unique but story wise, the first game, except you're putting Dracula back together. Castlevania 3 was "Ok, let's just add different playstyles." Aside from reading the instruction booklet, the story was more or less left out of the game itself, as was just how games of the NES days were (except for RPG's, which even then, had their own brand of crazy). Fast forward to establishing the very first Belmont. We've had some good run ins with Alucard, a few others, and learned that the world is not solely dependent on the Belmonts. Others can do stuff too. Then we spend a game establishing how important the first Belmont was and how the Vampire killer was formed. Already, due to the lifting technical limitations, we know more about the history of the Belmont clan and Dracula's first defining motivation. He was whiny and decided to hate God for his girl getting killed. Cue the violins. It turned Dracula, this malevolent force that wasn't completely understood, into anyone with a myspace. Granted, it made Dracula into a man that didn't know what to do with his grief. It gave him a human feel. It took away a lot of that unknown that had made him scary to begin with. It was closure to the story. You can only whip so much before you're rehashing the same levels with remixes of the same music. There's only so much story that can engage me when the mechanics are not aging as well as the plot. For me it's like a great book series. I've read those stories. They'll stick with me. I don't want to read the same books again with different characters. It's also ease of audience. It's easier to reset the world than to catch someone up on years of lore. Lords of Shadow took the history and said, "Let's see how the world looks through the eyes of this person, and what does that change?" It gave the Belmont clan shame in how they began. It made the battle more personal and had a wider range of conflicted emotions. I wont say it was better or worse, but it was different. It took advantage of it's hardware, asked different questions, posed different philosophies, and then let the player judge.
I agree wholeheartedly. I was ranting though. I feel like Castlevania is too good to be this bad, if that makes sense. Why create such good in depth games in the past and then in the future, where technology is better and just change everything? I don't see where they doing there. I'm not even going to start on Castlevania: Judgement. The first versus game, it was good story wise, kinda like Soul Calibur, but again they changed the characters looks and it just ruined it for me.
I completely agree with all of that. They could have easily done remakes of the games, even continued the story with a few catch up flash backs, and all the veteran fans would have been incredibly pumped to see new life in a great franchise. Even just seeing a continuation, a classic Belmont against Dracula story would have been great. What they've created, interesting from a story standpoint but convoluted in execution. I can see what they wanted to do but it did admittedly come across as a "well, this is a reference to what you fell in love with. We named someone Simon. Buy all our games." I personally would have loved to see a Zelda timeline effect. What if Soma had failed at resisting Dracula? What if somewhere down the line time was altered? Judgment would have been cool as a true Castlevania entry if it had been less of an attempt to redo everything the series had been. As for Judgment- I cringe. I don't know what development weed they smoked for the redesigns to make sense.
I am sooooo glad someone agrees with me. All I'm asking for is for them to stay faithful. I would love to see them add another Belmont and give him or her their own game. But without altering the timeline. I was deeply saddened by Judgement and Lords of Shadow, I love the game design in LoS, it's very good. I just wish it was a classic game. Remakes would please the crowd and give younger gamers and opportunity to experience the games that were before their time. I know there's some fans who hate Castlevania 64 & Legacy of Darkness, but that was the first 3D Castlevania game. That's definitely one I would like to see remade, along with Bloodlines, Curse of Darkness, Lament of Innocence. Lament of Innocence is my personal favorite game, but I think if they ever remade any of them it would be Symphony of The Night. I have no problem with that, It just seems like they're not thinking clearly about what the fans want. Like, they need to stop trying to beat the competition. I think that's what's wrong.
I would absolutely love a Curse of Darkness/Lament of Innocence remake. Both great games, but CoD was so open and movement was so distressing. Lament held what we all love about the games, made it fit, and gave the sub weapons actual usefulness for a 3D game. Castlevania 64 and Legacy were the only two I've not played through solely due to the N64 controller being the absolute bane of my existence. My hands are not made for those things at all. It's not a wide fan base comparatively and looking at the indie games gaining popularity as well as games on Xbox arcade there's clearly a lot of desire to see some of the old style gameplay come back. I'm not talking Harmony of Darkness or Mirror of Fate. Both tried to do too much and ended up looking like messes. Unfortunately the mostly failed releases of Megaman 9 and 10 pushed developers away. The market competition is driving game devs rather than taking risks like companies used to be able to do. Mostly, I'm OK with the whole "let's see what it's like to make Dracula the first Belmont" idea. It would have made a fantastic novel or even movie. I just, like you, would like to see a return to the roots of the series, if at least for one game. One last true moment for the CV series, much like Final Fantasy IX was considered.
While that would be cool, it seems that many of the recent Castlevania Games (Excluding Mirror of Fate) haven't been on Nintendo consoles, giving him a pretty small chance chance of getting in. It isn't the same with Snake though, considering he only got in because Mr. Sakurai and Mr. Kojima were good friends.
***** Seriously, how can anyone ignore the fact that at least 7 games were on Nintendo platforms between NES, SNES, and N64? Plus the few DS games that came out. I'm sure there were at least one or two original Gameboy games made as well.
Oh and the boss Zephyr from the DS Castlevania's is based on the character Dio Brando from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Gotta love that time stop followed by throwing a lot of knives.
Yeah, to me he's one of the most badass in the series. 1 - Shanoa (I don't know, she's so damn cool, not to mention her power being so adaptative) 2 - Soma / Allucard (yup, *spoiler*) 3 - Gabriel (from lords of shadow, the character is cool, the game is fun as fuck, the best 3D Castlevania, but that's not saying much when comparing to the 2D ones :/ ) 4 - everyone else, lol I actually hate the portrait of ruin main characters. The game is a whole lot fun, tho.
Did you know that the inspiration for Castlevania came from Twilight and the Vampire Diaries? Edward Cullen is the strongest vampire in this world ever and Dracula's character is based on Edward Cullen.
Fun Fact: One boss in the CastleVania games is a reference to Dio Brando from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The boss is known for his slicked blond hair, and his ability to stop time whilst tossing knives and saying "Toki wo Tomare!"
Seth Matteson another fun fact, there is another jojo's bizarre adventure reference in aria of sorrow, there is a soul you get from monster known as cragnazz. It becomes a large torso arms and head that yell "ORA ORA ORA"
And that one is actually in the Bible, not some medieval sorcery textbook (The Key of Solomon, I think-- and notice the contradiction: both Jewish and Christian scripture condemn sorcery and occultism as sinful. So Malphex isn't actually from a Christian source.)
Bitterfly is in fact a Chonchón (pronounced "xonxon", not concon as you said) and it's called MaPUche, not MaCHUpe. Also, the Mapuche are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, not a religion.
***** Ahaha, I'm a big fan of JRPGs or even Western RPG's. I'd say my second favourite game of all time is either Super Mario RPG or Tales of Vesperia.
People are subject to change after doing the same thing for years. If what he does makes him happy, let him be. As long as he's happy, we should be happy. He might be experimenting.
its the pewdiepie effect. go onto seananner's channel, watch his world at war videos and then watch his newer ones. apparently there is a direct correlation with decibels and views.
I mean, realistically, if they covered everything Castlevania referenced, the video would be probably an hour and a half long, if not longer. References from religions and folklore to cryptids and literature (including Lord of the Rings.)
But I have no sense of humour! I didn't think it was funny, I just like the name Mouthass better than Malphas.. Like, I would never name my kid Malphas, it's just ugly!
Igual genial ver a Chonchón en un juego, pero la cultura es Mapuche, no Machupe. Chile y sus cuentos de terror. Great to see the Chonchón in this game, but the culture is mispronounced it should be Mapuche instead of Machupe, ( WTF is a Machupe xD ) Chile and it's frightening myths.
Markiplier is one of the best youtubers. the amount of charity work he does eclipses almost everyone else on youtube. anyone that says any different are trolls.
In the Binding of Issac, Carmela appears as a boss called the Mask of Infamy. The boss has no health bar as the creator said that whatever was in it was not alive. The boss is extremely difficult.
The Flappy Bird Murderer wasn't real. wafflesatnoon.com/flappy-bird-killing/ Of course, I don't blame you for believing it. I wish I could say that events like two diluted young girls manipulating another young girl into thinking they were her friend just to sacrifice her to pop culture was unique. But there have been thousands upon thousands of Murders, and attempted murders in the name of fictional characters or to abide by the rules of a fictional universe. You know how many people in mental hospitals believe they're in the Matrix?
kenneth mabie Yeah, I'm aware these girls had serious mental issues, i.e. they were totally fucking whacked. I'd say that was pretty obvious the second they decided to knife a classmate in the woods. Not really sure why you're debating the particulars of it with me though, considering the pop-culture figure of their psychotic obsession really is irrelevant. Their subconscious just gave them an excuse to act out their sick violent fantasies, and in a world without Slenderman they would've no doubt tried to sacrifice that poor girl to Aliens, Justin Beiber or Corn Flakes. Also, believe it or not I actually am, some what, familiar with what you're talking about. It's that relatively new fringe theory about how the universe's true form may actually be two dimensional strings of "information" (use that term loosely) and that reality as we know it, converts this information into 3D objects, not unlike how a computer would render a video game, except backwards since the 3D object would determine the code. However... 1. This is extremely controversial and has like no solid evidence to back it up. It is just a theory. 2. Regardless on whether or not this is true, it would have no barring on our day to day lives. Just as being in the actual Matrix would, frankly. 3. I didn't say they believed they were in something similar to the Matrix. I said they believed they were in the Matrix, keanu reeves agent Smiths, Morpheus, Trinity and the whole damn shebang. Including everything from the shitty sequels, so probably those stupid fucking Vampires too. In what is a very text book case of fantasy fueled self-delusion. 4. Not exactly like the Sims, because last I checked the Grim Reaper doesn't take regular walks whistling down my street, and I don't have a Polar Bear for a room mate, though admittedly that would be pretty awesome.
AVGN seems to be more into filming/editing than gaming. If he was as into gaming as he claims, wouldn't he be better at it? I'm not trying to come off as an asshole, I love James' content, but Mike Mattei is IMO a better retro gamer, and then sometimes Pat Contri comes by and runs circles around both of them.
Teflon Vaughn You think Mike is more of a retro gamer? First of all, he owns an XboxOne, second, what does that have to do with Markiplier or James? James might not be much of a retro gamer, but he doesn't play shitty indie games that try hard to be funny or fucking Oculus rift games. Does Markiplier even own an NES or even played any Castlevania games?
You kind of missed one possible reference here, when you were talking about the boss Legion. Legion was a collection of demons possessing a man that Jesus encountered in chapter 5 of the Gospel of Mark. When Jesus asked the demon possessing the man for his name, it replied, "Call us Legion, for we are many." The demons asked that when Jesus cast them out, he cast them out into a nearby herd of pigs. Jesus cast the demons into the pigs, and the pigs jumped into a nearby lake and drowned.
I wouldn't consider that hating on Markiplier. It's just the combination of his soothing manly man voice on a show that asks him to simply read a list of facts.
***** I dont watch markiplier videos. But it is annoying to see so many contrarians who see someone popular on the internet and feel the need to let everyone know how unique they are then call anyone who disagrees fanboys. Yall are worse than fanboys lol. He has a good voice for narration.
Poor Markiplier, he gets the episode where he has to pronounce things... and does it always wrong :D At least Neuschwanzstein... then again, it's german, most people don't know how to pronounce that. EDIT: I MEANT NEUSCHWANSTEIN. My mind was in the gutter... :D
Neuschwanzstein? XD well... his japanese is worse... karasu (カラス/烏) is raven... what he says sounds more like korosu (殺す)... that means "to kill"... but anyway... he did his best and it was interesting XD edit: btw... was Neuschwanzstein a typo or are you german and know, what you did there? if it was a typo - well done... you wrote "new dick stone" or "new tail stone" ^^
You know, I don't think Elizabeth Bartley is just BASED on Elizabeth Bathory... I think that's actually what her name is in the game! "Bartley" is likely a mistranslation, since both Bartley and Bathory would be rendered as BATORII (バトリー) or BAATORII (バートリー) in Japanese.
Well, assuming Bathory is pronounced the way it's spelled (the way he pronounced it in the video), wouldn't it be something like バソリ(basori)? The 's' sound is a lot closer to the 'th' sound than the 't' sound is. Unless, of course, he pronounced it wrong and her name is pronounced with a 't' sound, which is entirely possible.
liaku25 "Th" sounds can be represented with a T or an S mora depending on the source language and... honestly, the whims of whoever first decided to write the word out in katakana, so it's hard to say. But that is a good point. Still seems a little too close not to have been intended, though, I think.
He said "Se-pesh". Am I missing something? There is neither an "s" nor an "sh" in "Tepes". I've always thought it was pronounced "Tepp" (silent e and s) or even "Tuh-pess". Even "Teeps", but not Sepesh
As a Romanian, can you tell me if Wallachia was part of Romania when Dracula ruled it? I read somewhere that Wallachia was part of Hungary at the time and that Count Vlad was Hungarian.
Great job narrating this, Mark. Never knew there was this much history in subtle things throughout the classic Castlevania games, and I played the shit out of Symphony of Night (my personal favorite of the series)
I've never played the originals, but I'm in awe of the effort they put into the lore and the sources they drew inspirations from, I think that's a rare commodity when you think of that era in gaming.
Dunndolo4life this isn't a clone, but the spiritual successor, which is being developed. Koji Igarashi, creator of SotN and other 2d exploration-based Castlevania games, leading development of Bloodstained, and Michiru Yamane, who composed music for those Castlevanias, works on this game as well. I can't wait to play when it comes out
Konami can go burn in hell. They're making EA look like saints. They already butchered Castlevania with Lords of Shadow, I don't trust them with the series. But yeah, Bloodstained. Iga, the guy who did the Metroidvania games, is handling it. And so far it looks bloody great. Pretty psyched about it.
This is the kind of stuff that I love in games, movies, any form of multimedia, really: Stuff that is inspired by really obscure historical or religious references. Stuff that we wouldn't know existed unless someone pointed it out to us, then it becomes so obvious and really cool. This video alone might be enough to get me to start playing the Castlevania games, perhaps...
***** The point of this comment was not to bitch about Markiplier, it was to point out that I don't like Markiplier but I still think his narration was top notch. The fact that StarBot whined about just the one element of that comment that he cared about instead of adding to the topic makes him a fanboy. Then again, considering only one reply to my comment has had anything to do with the topic of conversation, maybe I shouldn't have made the post at all.
Did you know, Sonia Belmont would have made a great female figure as starting the stand against Dracula but one dev decided to throw that completely out the window? Man, what a waste.
Because the Belmonts were originally a lineage of knights before becoming vampire hunters, and a female knight was nearly unheard of in the middle ages.
lalungenuictdestens You are both correct and incorrect my friend! lol as Ryan Wilson already pointed out lol. If youre a fan of awesome movies you should watch Dracula Untold. IT. IS. AMAZING.
***** He could atleast try to pronounce it correctly, out of respect... I'm not German either and I wouldn't pronounce it as Nuhskwamsteyene (how Dutch people would, more or less, pronounce it)...
I am German and I think he has a cute way of pronouncing it. Utterly wrong and not understandebil (only knew what he ment throu the writing ) but still kinda cute ^^
HateSolstice127 I never called him stupid... I said he could have tried pronouncing it correctly. Inputting something in Google translate and having the word said outloud isn't very difficult or time-consuming. The way he pronounced it is the generic, English way to do so. Saying a word in a foreign language the correct way is a gesture of respect.
This was a great feature. I'm highly impressed with the amount of source material CV pulled from. Super impressive, makes me appreciate the game that much more even though I only have completed CV IV.
chris passama Call of Duty is a rip off of Battlefield because you hold guns and shoot people and Battlefield came out first and in that game you also hold guns and shoot people therefore COD is a copy.
I think everybody would die from any more sexy Mark voice than he already crams into just one of these videos, and I'm kinda surprised there are any fans left that haven't had their heads explode from the sexy Mark voice overload. It may be dangerous, but I also want more Mark, besides, Marks sexy voice is addictive, don't you know. ;)
Yeah I didn't think the 64 games weren't that bad either. The controls and camera were the only real things that bothered me, otherwise it was a pretty amazing game and even had it's scary Resident Evil styled moments like that freaking Frankenstein Gardener and the freaky faces of the Vampires.
It's pretty sad to see that so many people here are too busy complaining about Markiplier's narration to give two shits about the ACTUAL CONTENT of the video. I don't watch Markiplier's videos, so I don't know how he sounds in those, but he sounds perfectly calm and clear in those videos, which is just what you need.
great video. Love all the historical references. It should also be noted that the Vampire Hunter D Books and movie, helped inspire the Castlevania game(s) as well. Love this series. Keep up the good work.
Americans pronounce English different, english pronounce and spell different, Europeans pronounce English different, some words either mean something else or have their own. English is expanded within time and culture just like Spanish, mexican Spanish is a modern tone Spanish, while Spaniards are a more traditional Spanish. Even china has extreme culture differences where there's two main languages like mandarin, but then there's also small village languages. It's not that we pronounce things different but change the language slightly due to time and liberal culture.
0:30 This isn't true actually. Alucard's name was shown in the credits of his very first appearance in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (Akumajō Densetsu in Japan). It's only shown as "Adrian F. Tepes", though. Despite that, I believe that his full name was revealed in the game's manual, at least in Japan.
A small observation! 04:35 the creatures are actually called Chonchon (phonetically, shon-shon), but the religion is 'Mapuche', not 'Machupe' (referring to the ethnic group of the same name) Thanks for the great videos, i really love DYKG!
Thanks for having me narrate again! The pronunciations in this one were a bear, I hope you promptly burned all of my failed attempts :P
You rule \m/! Love your Brutal Doom review!

This sounds like the plot of Vampire Hunter D ngl.
By far my favorite episode. Mark is such a great narrator, and this video is so full of interesting trivia.
Yep totally agree! He just needs to work on his pronunciation or do multiple takes, whichever
Am I the only one here still trying to wrap his head around how "Tepes" is pronounced "Sepesh"?
+Chris Westergaard Mark is the the one who pronounces it that way, the actual pronountiation is different.

Not really, for me. In other languages, letters aren't always pronounced the same way English-speakers would do so.
Because it's missing accent marks the way they spelled it. Țepeş is the proper spelling.

so the 'pesh' is more relaxed or silent in comparison to Tze? : o
NightxofxDarkrai Yeah, I think Mark said it with a french accent or something where that kind of emphasis is more common.
1trueNRG Ah I see n_n Thanks for letting me know : )
NightxofxDarkrai Yup,is more "relaxed" :) It's fine thou,it happens to ALL of us when we try to speak a different language. The first time is a little hard..

Buy all our games."
I personally would have loved to see a Zelda timeline effect.
Simon Belmont for Smash Bros!
Hs00129 the GBA, and DS games say hi
***** Read Hs00129's first post
Mirror of fate doesn't deserve the honour to be called a Castlevania title.
Oh and the boss Zephyr from the DS Castlevania's is based on the character Dio Brando from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Gotta love that time stop followed by throwing a lot of knives.
ZA WARUDO.
Natsu Dragneel
How many breads have you eaten?
Artenuga
*Gasp.*
Legion's probably actually based on Christianity.
"Our name is Legion, for we are many."
my name is legion for we are many
Thats what I thought when I saw Legion show up in the video too! Like the demon(s) Jesus cast out of the naked dude
Tynanitar legion is an army of demons all inhabiting one body.when asked."what is thy name?".it will say."our name is legion.for we are many".
***** i am the angel of death.death is destuctive.
Christianity isn't mythology.....
"Let's go out this evening for pleasure. The night is still young"
Did you know: Soma Cruz is a badass?
Fuckin' Right!
At first I had trouble getting over the hair, but now he's one of my favorite video game characters.
Yeah, to me he's one of the most badass in the series.
1 - Shanoa (I don't know, she's so damn cool, not to mention her power being so adaptative)
2 - Soma / Allucard (yup, *spoiler*)
3 - Gabriel (from lords of shadow, the character is cool, the game is fun as fuck, the best 3D Castlevania, but that's not saying much when comparing to the 2D ones :/ )
4 - everyone else, lol
I actually hate the portrait of ruin main characters. The game is a whole lot fun, tho.
wow this has to be the most interesting did you know gaming episode I've ever seen
Did you know that the inspiration for Castlevania came from Twilight and the Vampire Diaries? Edward Cullen is the strongest vampire in this world ever and Dracula's character is based on Edward Cullen.
Good one.
Thats right but i hated the fact that Dracula didn´t sparkle at the sun light I mean what kind of vampire dies at sunlight?
Jocachaval C. The ones from Diabolik lovers don't XD
Megamibunny then they did a good job representing the good old vampires like Edward
How could I forget Alucards special ability when exposed to the sun?!: Sparkle Attack!
Fun Fact: One boss in the CastleVania games is a reference to Dio Brando from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The boss is known for his slicked blond hair, and his ability to stop time whilst tossing knives and saying "Toki wo Tomare!"
I was expecting them to mention Jojo but all I got was Dio.
Zephyr from Dawn of Sorrow?
In addition to DIO, he seems to also be a reference to Jack the Ripper.
Seth Matteson another fun fact, there is another jojo's bizarre adventure reference in aria of sorrow, there is a soul you get from monster known as cragnazz. It becomes a large torso arms and head that yell "ORA ORA ORA"
Symphony of the Night also has a "Stone Mask"
5:28 "Noy-shwin-steen castle"
This hurts. Do not ask Microsoft Sam to pronounce a non-english word. Ever.
You forgot about Granfaloon's English name, Legion, which is a name that comes from the Christian Bible as a man possessed by a legion of demons.
And that one is actually in the Bible, not some medieval sorcery textbook (The Key of Solomon, I think-- and notice the contradiction: both Jewish and Christian scripture condemn sorcery and occultism as sinful. So Malphex isn't actually from a Christian source.)
--No he didn't.
Lest you mean explaining it.
Markipiler? It should've been James Rolfe.
markiplier in a castlevania video??? WHAT??
Bitterfly is in fact a Chonchón (pronounced "xonxon", not concon as you said) and it's called MaPUche, not MaCHUpe.
Also, the Mapuche are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, not a religion.
It's good to see this comment has already been made, I was about to make it again
I can't believe this happened :O
Castlevania is my favourite game series, and Markiplier is one of my favourite YT'ers.
Symphony of the Night is my favourite game of all time btw
Nobody cares
***** Then why bother replying?
Man, you are pure gold. You have a Dark Souls avatar, and your fav game of all time is SoTN. We are cyber soul-mates
***** Ahaha, I'm a big fan of JRPGs or even Western RPG's. I'd say my second favourite game of all time is either Super Mario RPG or Tales of Vesperia.
Amazing how tolerable Markiplier becomes when he isn't shouting like an idiot. I'd watch his stuff if he talked like this in his primary content.
He used to talk like this before, now sometimes is a little annoying IMO... i really like his old videos :/
Eh, you can't blame him. It sells, and most people can't pull it off.
His videos would be boring, but that doesn't mean his current videos aren't annoying... Hmm...
Missed one: Olrox from Symphony of the Night was based on Count Orlok from Nosferatu (1922).
I mean, realistically, if they covered everything Castlevania referenced, the video would be probably an hour and a half long, if not longer. References from religions and folklore to cryptids and literature (including Lord of the Rings.)
child, EVERYBODY knows that one already :)
DID YOU KNOW The American artwork for Simon's Quest has his whip in the shape of a cursive 2? Castlevania 2 :)
I didn't know that. But did you know that Trevor thumb looks broken on the cover art for Dracula's Curse? :p
Wow, that's actually a neat detail. I doubt even the artist noticed it, since it seems like a natural pose for a whip. XD
Cool I didn't notice neither. That is pretty cool.
4:29 I guess that's where Toby Fox got his inspiration for the Gaster Blasters.
Maybe...
WOW
THEY'RE LAZERS
MUST BE SANS
6:34 That "Vampiric Figure" on the TSR - I6 - Ravenloft Module is Count Strahd von Zarovich.
3:46 Mouthass? Nice name.. xD
Mouthass was better, guess I hear what I want to hear :)
***** it did actually sound like mouthass. Even if it isn't the creatures actual name, can't blame the guy for having a sense of humour
But I have no sense of humour! I didn't think it was funny, I just like the name Mouthass better than Malphas.. Like, I would never name my kid Malphas, it's just ugly!
It could be spelt like that who knows?
coincidentally if you turn on captions. The automatic captions agree with you. "mouth ass" lol.
Machupe? wat? Religion? WAT?
First, it's MAPUCHE, and it's not a religion, it's a indigenous group.
*****
Still not a religion, the guy is right
Stop being smartasses, by religion he clearly meant culture and mythology.
^^
Igual genial ver a Chonchón en un juego, pero la cultura es Mapuche, no Machupe. Chile y sus cuentos de terror.
Great to see the Chonchón in this game, but the culture is mispronounced it should be Mapuche instead of Machupe, ( WTF is a Machupe xD )
Chile and it's frightening myths.
My favourite DYKG so far! Please, try to do more videos with historical/mythical references! I love those!
I wonder if the distant future someone will make a game about folklore of our time and include the psychos too
like the Flappy Bird murderer
*****
I think I laughed too hard at this
how about the teens sacrificing people to slenderman?
The Flappy Bird Murderer wasn't real.
wafflesatnoon.com/flappy-bird-killing/
Of course, I don't blame you for believing it.
I wish I could say that events like two diluted young girls manipulating another young girl into thinking they were her friend just to sacrifice her to pop culture was unique. But there have been thousands upon thousands of Murders, and attempted murders in the name of fictional characters or to abide by the rules of a fictional universe.
You know how many people in mental hospitals believe they're in the Matrix?
kenneth mabie
Yeah, I'm aware these girls had serious mental issues, i.e. they were totally fucking whacked.
SOTN one of my favorite games ever, The soundtrack i's so great.
I still listen to the prolouge track to this day.
What has this got to do with Markiplier? Should have got AVGN.
Teflon Vaughn
You think Mike is more of a retro gamer? First of all, he owns an XboxOne, second, what does that have to do with Markiplier or James? James might not be much of a retro gamer, but he doesn't play shitty indie games that try hard to be funny or fucking Oculus rift games. Does Markiplier even own an NES or even played any Castlevania games?
hey, its fred fucks!
Because video games, you dingas.
Fred Fuchs
It's Mark, not Mike. Shows how much you know. You can't assume what games he plays in his spare time if you can't even get his name right.
"Gilles de RGHAEH"
***** ECH
I love this DYKG, and I would love to know what the background songs are that were used in this Did You Know Gaming video.
How to make a DYKG video Boring: MARKIPLIER
Obvious Markiplier hater is obvious.
I wouldn't consider that hating on Markiplier.
It's just the combination of his soothing manly man voice on a show that asks him to simply read a list of facts.
***** Look daddy! Exclamation marks!
boo
hoo
XD well... his japanese is worse... karasu (カラス/烏) is raven... what he says sounds more like korosu (殺す)... that means "to kill"...
but anyway... he did his best and it was interesting XD
edit: btw... was Neuschwanzstein a typo or are you german and know, what you did there? if it was a typo - well done... you wrote "new dick stone" or "new tail stone" ^^
Best video yet. It'd be kickass to see some more history-based videos based on some other gaming franchises.
This should have been 20 minutes. I could listen to that all day.
Unless, of course, he pronounced it wrong and her name is pronounced with a 't' sound, which is entirely possible.
liaku25 look up on on google translate in hungarian, it is Báthory
liaku25 "Th" sounds can be represented with a T or an S mora depending on the source language and... honestly, the whims of whoever first decided to write the word out in katakana, so it's hard to say. But that is a good point.
Still seems a little too close not to have been intended, though, I think.
im crying at how mark pronounces Tepes and Dracul (Romanian here ayy)
You shouldn't, because he tried and he's not a romanian speaker. He could go all 'murican and say just "tee-pez"
Nono it's not bad tears, I love when people try pronouncing things in Romanian. I just find it funny and it really makes me happy
Garraway Prox He means he's crying from laughing too hard.
I wish they would make a new Castlevania, the GBA ones are some of my favorite games ever.
Great job narrating this, Mark. Never knew there was this much history in subtle things throughout the classic Castlevania games, and I played the shit out of Symphony of Night (my personal favorite of the series)
Man, would totally love to see more videos about Castlevania & History, i thought i knew a lot about this series.
Madusa, Frankenstein Monster and Beth.
Luigi died
Carmilla sounds like a boss, I gotta read that book now
I've never played the originals, but I'm in awe of the effort they put into the lore and the sources they drew inspirations from, I think that's a rare commodity when you think of that era in gaming.
My two favorite things in the world: Markiplier and Castlevania. It can't get any better than this.
"took inspiration from"? That Castlevania 2 looked like straight up plagiarism.
You should of had "Angry Video Game Nerd" do the voice over for this video. He loves Castlevania
"this game sucks". Man, good ol' love :')
I don't know if he would have time right now. James is still very busy with the AVGN movie wrap-up.
I wanted him to do that
He would've began with "Did you fucking know?"
*****
Now that, I'd like to see.
Man. we need a new 2d Metroidvania right now. Come on Konami.
+Dunndolo4life have you ever heard of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night by Koji Igarashi?
+Azune Konpeki nah. What is that? a new metroidvania clone? the name itself peeked my interest.
+Camelslayer lords of shadow isnt that bad 😑, the 1st ond is obviously better, but the 2nd has some interesting plot points like Alucard
6:37 - that "Figure" is Count Strahd Von Zarovich of Barovia in Module I6 (1983) for AD&D.
Markiplier at 2x speed is comedic gold.
If Mark would've been a history teacher, I would've started to love History :DD
What music did they use in this video? I know it's from the series, but I wanna know specifically what that second track was.
Bloody Tears from Rondo of Blood (originally from CV2)
Finally, castlevania gets its own video. I hope you post more about this amazing series
I could listen to this for hours. Please make more Castlevania DYKG!
5:04 RELIGION!
Religion isn't all fun and games. We must PRAY too!
I got the reference right away XD
What is a man?
A miserable little pile of secrets
But enough talk. Have at you!
A hairy handsome animal with tan skin, robust muscles, an awesome stache, and a hose between his legs.
A Carbon/hydrogen-based mammal distinguished by the Y chromosome.
Ah feminist, the worst kind of people
Markiplier usually annoys the hell out of me but he did a good job in this video.
Lol, did I hit a soft spot pal?
***** Do I smell fanboy?
Yeah, his voice is perfect for narrating.
***** As he said. He wasn't even bitching. He was actually complimenting Mark.
WOW all the small details and historical characters....
I'm not a Castlevania veteran but this makes me respect the series even more
probably one of the best did you know gamings EVERY
Did you know, Sonia Belmont would have made a great female figure as starting the stand against Dracula but one dev decided to throw that completely out the window? Man, what a waste.
Because the Belmonts were originally a lineage of knights before becoming vampire hunters, and a female knight was nearly unheard of in the middle ages.
Not true! In romanian "Drac" means "devil", "Dracul" means "The Devil"!!!
lalungenuictdestens It actually translates to both that and "Dragon".
Ryan Wilson The Dragon Devil.
lalungenuictdestens You are both correct and incorrect my friend! lol as Ryan Wilson already pointed out lol. If youre a fan of awesome movies you should watch Dracula Untold. IT. IS. AMAZING.
+Rin Izumi That movies storyline is exactly like The Lords of Shadow games though... ._.
Xilivian4560
No it isnt lol In LoS Gabriel was bitten
Neushwansteen castle? What the fuck Mark? :P
AND YOU´RE EVEN PART GERMAN
***** He could atleast try to pronounce it correctly, out of respect... I'm not German either and I wouldn't pronounce it as Nuhskwamsteyene (how Dutch people would, more or less, pronounce it)...
I am German and I think he has a cute way of pronouncing it. Utterly wrong and not understandebil (only knew what he ment throu the writing ) but still kinda cute ^^
***** i can say that easily :3 POLISH FTW!
Castlevania, History, Markiplier, its 3 of the favorite things all in one!
This was a great feature. I'm highly impressed with the amount of source material CV pulled from. Super impressive, makes me appreciate the game that much more even though I only have completed CV IV.
I am from Argentina and I've never heard about concons (or whatever they're called) in my life o.O
Argentinian too, and I've neither heard nor found any data on it. Source?
maybe as " Tue Tue"
Darkbuda
Nope, I never heard of Chon Chons or Tue Tues in my life. Maybe my family didn't know about those myths.
Fernando Langalú de que sector de Argentina eres??, soy de Chile, región de araucania asi que algo se del mito
Whose watching this after the direct?
Hey people, do you remember when Castlevania were great and wasn't a generic God Of War?
Good times...
Yeah, the series was amazing before they retconned Sonia
Gabe Puratekuta Blame Iga ironically.
You mean back when it was a rip off of Super Metroid?
chris passama
Call of Duty is a rip off of Battlefield because you hold guns and shoot people and Battlefield came out first and in that game you also hold guns and shoot people therefore COD is a copy.
@@GabePuratekuta Castlevania legends was crap, I don't think it was Sonia's fault, but the overall low quality of the game
Castlevania is my second favorite gaming franchise and i'm happy that Markiplier narrated this episode
I love how Castlevania: Curse of Darkness is never mentioned but the music is clearly added. To me, its the best game in the series hands down
Get Mark to narrate all the DYKG. :D
AAAWWW, YEAH!!
Hold my beer
I think everybody would die from any more sexy Mark voice than he already crams into just one of these videos, and I'm kinda surprised there are any fans left that haven't had their heads explode from the sexy Mark voice overload. It may be dangerous, but I also want more Mark, besides, Marks sexy voice is addictive, don't you know. ;)
Daviljoe193
If I die by hearing his voice I would have no regrets
As great a narrator as he is I by far prefer the variety they have now :)
dont hate on me but i think AVGN would have been better for this one that if if you could have got him to do it
Did you know: 3D Castlevania games FUCKING suck!
I hope Wayforward or Vanillaware do the next 2D Castlevania game.
I actually think they aren't that bad.
dude, Wayfoward making the game would kick ass, their 2D work is amazing.
***** castlevania 64: (has some flaws but no where close to being bad)
castlevania legacy of darkness: (fixed up, and is FREAKING AWESOME)
Yeah I didn't think the 64 games weren't that bad either. The controls and camera were the only real things that bothered me, otherwise it was a pretty amazing game and even had it's scary Resident Evil styled moments like that freaking Frankenstein Gardener and the freaky faces of the Vampires.
A very interesting episode...
I always enjoy hearing about mythology, especially the stuff i've never heard of...
I feel proud being a Romanian and seeing my boi Vlad get his well deserved credit
AVGN would have been a more fitting narrator I believe :3
Tepes...Chepes....fuck this name, it's fucking Dracula!
I wonder when will Pewds narrate to theese...
never.
Solfei
hopefully. But if even Marklipier ist doing it, then maybe Pewdiepie will eventually follow
lampenpam But Marklipier doesn't sound annoying. That's the difference.
Ew no pewdiepie thanks
No.. Just no..
great video. Love all the historical references. It should also be noted that the Vampire Hunter D Books and movie, helped inspire the Castlevania game(s) as well. Love this series. Keep up the good work.
What an excellent episode. We want more like this.
why do you pronounce it "Sepesh" when it's spelled "Tepes" I mean..."Tepesh," sure, but "Sepesh?" That's like pronouncing Lieutenant with an "f."
...phonics is weird.
David Spring
The name is Romanian, the name is pronounced differently to how it looks to us. Caught me off guard too.
phonics is still weird.
It is Romanian. Not every country pronounces letters the way we do.
phonics is phonics, regardless of the country of origin.
Neat
Why do americans always pronouce "Stein" as "Steen" ...
(^ from Germany) I laughed my ass xD
I don't.
I don't know, soereenfeevefeevefeeve. I buy Calveen Kleen undies.
They do? I've _always_ pronounced it stein.
I guess the "I before e except after c" rule fouls them up or something.
04:35 the creatures are actually called Chonchon (phonetically, shon-shon), but the religion is 'Mapuche', not 'Machupe' (referring to the ethnic group of the same name)
Thanks for the great videos, i really love DYKG!
