Pentium M and Celeron M based Centrino processors often beat the mobile Pentium 4 and NetBurst mobile Celerons chips in performance and power efficiency. An article on Ars Tecnica states that, "A Pentium M is (very roughly) 50% faster than a similar P4". A Tom's Hardware thread from 2005 says that "A Pentium M 2GHz is usually faster than a P4 3.0GHz". Yet another Tom's Hardware thread mentions that "[Celeron M] will be roughly equivalent in performance for many applications". As a matter of fact they were so good that some motherboard manufacturers offered them as replacements for desktop Pentium 4 processors. The most famous of these cases was ASUS releasing a special Socket 478 (Pentium 4/Celeron) to Socket 479 (Pentium M/Celeron M) adapter called CT-479. As for which Intel laptop lineup is the second worst I'd say that Pentium 4 Mobile chips were quite awful. They were slow, hot, overpriced and painfully power hungry. Some of these chips are so inefficient that there are Atom processors out there that outperform them.
