that's probably because I only messaged for a little under 2 years then worked in the office. I worked for Street Kings. Feel free to stop by their office and ask if I was employed there!
actually I bought the bike myself, with my own earned money while working at a bike shop using a discount. I have a 2nd fixed gear, less expensive bike that I used for work. They wanted me to use the BMC cause it was nice looking. I am no longer a messenger because I got a higher paying job. You care too much about my business let alone to leave a comment like that
Not only the comments about the BMC frame, but he has Dura-Ace Di2 and Easton carbon wheels!! Not sure if they are sew-ups or not? That makes that more like a $12,000 bike new!!
I don't get what's so special about being a courier in New York. You have a grid street system with numbered streets, therefore orientation is super easy, there's as good as no elevation, so you don't even have to be overly athletic, traffic is slow to average and clearly organized, so you neither have to be technically skilled nor have to be predictive while keeping overview. Now before you start bashing on me, i also work as a courier, i've worked in different cities and have also been to New York, although haven't worked there as a courier. I'm not trying to be a dick. I just don't get it. Would some one please explain? Thanks!
When I was messengering, I was on the bike for about 8 hours of work, as well as my other transit so often on and off 10-12 hours. It's worthwhile being on a bike that performs and that you are comfortable with. My riding style is too hard for a bike like that, but I have seen similar.
Technically speaking anyone with a nice bike in NYC, you have about 1-3 hours before you can expect a piece possibly missing, but if you leave your bike outside for more than 1-3 days, if youre lucky you could expect your frameset still there, if not then its time to buy a bike or build the bike up again if the frame is still there.
My main work bike is 6k plus all carbon with hed wheels, I work with messengers that have Bishops as there main work whip. I'm not going to ride a junk bike for 10 to 14 hours a day six days a week if I have a choice, so do but not me. 20grit b-more 44
I had an opportunity to have that brand Master King from Street Kings AKA Fernando gave me the gloves it's nice to see this documentary it brought me back flashback when I used to be a messenger somehow we are connected
For a bike messenger he must make a lot of money. Or he inherited a lot of it. That bike he rides appears to be a BMC Teammachine SLR01 which retails in the vicinity of USD$6,000 to $8,000. It's the bike Cadel Evans rode to victory in the 2011 Tour de France. Seeing how bike messengers don't make that kind of money I'm going with the trust fund brat posing as a bike messenger seeing how the occupation has been romanticized and the look made fashionable, at least within the hipster scene.
I disagree, it's the most important thing for his job and he said he can ride it up to 10-12 hours a day, in which case spending that much on a bike is not unreasonable.
unusualbob5 yes it is. If you are spending up to ten hours a day on the saddle and your racing then its reasonable. But why would a bike messenger who doesnt make that much money risk a full carbon road bike on the streets where they can and eventually will get hit. Also that thing would get stolen the second they delivered a package unless they always bring the bike in with them. completely wrong tool for the job.
Erik Hausknecnecht most (not all) messengers have more than one bike. They have their work bike whatever other expensive bike that they wish to own. In this case its probably his BMC. Maybe he's using it only for the video
I'm from germany and i wanna do THIS. That's my dream job but i don't wanna do it in berlin or anywhere else in germany. I wanna do that in new york, la,...love it
I wish Manhattan Portage had the build quality of Chrome. They have basically the same piece of Chrome but just significantly worse attention to detail, features, organization, and looks. They could do so much better and be much more liked but they cut cost and corners instead of building a better reputation. If you go into both of their stores in Manhattan like I’d do for fun as a bike messenger you know what I’m talking about.
I hate all this "well, if we made it in America, we couldn't have it affordable, oh BULLSHIT. How often do you buy something like a messenger bag? Or a bike helmet? Or a bicycle? Or shoes? I personally remember a time when an American made frame (LeMond), European components (they're pros, we're not), an American made messenger bag and clothing made in San Francisco were to be had for maybe 25 percent more than Chinese communist slave factory crap. It's amazing that American and European companies that were thriving only twenty years ago are so destitute they export everything to China now, give me a fucking break.
RedBearded T Ah c'mon! You picked out the one arguement you can actually argue about. ^^ It maybe a little chaotic during rush hour, but that's nothing overly special. Go to Thailand and you'll see, what's chaotic! Compared to that, NY is extremely organized. I'm not saying it's easy being a courier in NY, but what exactly makes it so super special?
+Sam Bebop ... I've been on motorbikes and bicycles on 4 continents and about 20 countries. I was a bicycle messenger in NY in 1999. I can assure everyone that the traffic in Manhattan is a breeze. I ride a motorbike in Saigon, Vietnam, right now. Look up traffic in Saigon, or any Indian city you choose on UA-cam. NY dangerous? Not at all, at all, at all. Slainte Ri an rothair.
your daddy bought your bike and u have nothing to do whit ur life so u just wanna be a wanna be messenger ?!?!? wow !!! your lucky man !!!! happy for ya !
actually I bought the bike myself, with my own earned money while working at a bike shop using a discount. I have a 2nd fixed gear, less expensive bike that I used for work. Dear Mr. Shacklford, i'm sure you're not quite aware of the fact that a liberal society is just what it takes to make it possible for you to write comments like these

Survive nyc?... LOL! hahaha, try miami dade county where people believe you have no right to be on the road with a bike. Getting honked, yelled at, cut off just to name a few. You literally have to wave your arm at cars so that they'll stop for you.
Manhattan Portage is all made in China now, this isn't 1995 anymore, they sold out. Bagaboo bags, made in Hungary, everything else in China unless you're prepared to drop $400 on one made in San Francisco, that's it.
Title should be: Messenger bag commercial
Agreed, this is a commercial, not a gritty "real" messenger video.
agreed with who ? there was no such comment lol u talkin to urself ?
ysf adb Good point! Lol. I don't recall. I agree (again).
i worked in nyc for 2 and a half years, on the east coast total for 6, and i've never seen this dude before in my life.
that's probably because I only messaged for a little under 2 years then worked in the office. I worked for Street Kings. Feel free to stop by their office and ask if I was employed there!
i would like to see footage of this guy working his shifts
BMC SL01 and Easton Aero wheels for a messenger bike? Damn the pay must be good
That's prob his weekend bike he used for the video
actually I bought the bike myself, with my own earned money while working at a bike shop using a discount. I have a 2nd fixed gear, less expensive bike that I used for work. Not only the comments about the BMC frame, but he has Dura-Ace Di2 and Easton carbon wheels!! Not sure if they are sew-ups or not? That makes that more like a $12,000 bike new!!
Ok no he is not a bike messenger. No bike messenger has a 10,000$ bike!!
KING SIG I was just going to say that. BMC with Easton wheels? This guy must make some pretty serious bank.
its like uber you drive to get a better car or some shit
so what do you lock your few thousand dollar bike with, mr. prestige bike messenger?
The "New York Lock" gets you insurance. Or used to?
I don't get what's so special about being a courier in New York. Great points
Who said its special big fucking deal I ride in the city to its Pretty easy and I jumped in to an allycat and came out I didn't win but ya
+Sam Bebop New York is like Texas; everyone who lives there thinks it is better than anywhere else, even if they've never been anywhere else.
+Sam Bebop ... I was a messenger there for all of 1999. I agree with everything you wrote. I didn't find it dangerous at all. I did it on a Mongoose.
That's because you're not riding dangerously enough. You have to tease death and give him a boner, either was play safe and not get fucked.
what messenger works on a $10,000 bike
he's an actor

Agreed. Anything worth more than roughly $2k is over kill.
I had an opportunity to have that brand Master King from Street Kings AKA Fernando gave me the gloves it's nice to see this documentary it brought me back flashback when I used to be a messenger somehow we are connected
Manhattan portage has some nice bags. May have to check one out, from Chicago!
When I move to NYC, I would like to be a bike messenger.

I would love to try this for a year or so. It looks awesome!
First step is an expensive bike. You stand next to it.
one of New York's fastest messenger is hanging around in the background at 4:36 just chillin leaning on his bike
For a bike messenger he must make a lot of money. Or he inherited a lot of it.

Does anyone even use these bags? Their website looks like Vogue magazine for wannabes.
You shouldn't cross the red light and put pedestrians in danger.
Sam Bebop NYC traffic is anything but organized.
RedBearded T Ah c'mon! You picked out the one arguement you can actually argue about. ^^

Sam Bebop I guess for America it is organized. I've been to Taiwan, that's hectic, I assume Thailand is bad as well.
RedBearded T Yepp!
