Scotty Kilmer hey scotty...i am huge fan....recently i got my tires changed and balanced on my honda city 1.3 aspire prosmatec....but when i go over 110 km/h i can feel vibration in the steering wheel. my car is a 2016 model...and i take good care of it.
and also please tell me if the oil honda oem 5w30 fully synthetic is good for 5000km / 3000miles or does it last longer because my owners manual says 3000 miles. and i dont understand it for a full synthetic oil its pretty short drain interval
ali usmani Conventional oil=3000-5000 miles, full synthetic= 7,500-15,000 miles. It all depends on what type you get. To be on the safe side, use the lower numbers.
ali usmani Does this happen when you're breaking? If so, it is possible that your rotors are warped. If not I would have them rebalance the tires as long as none of your rims are visually bent. Vibration at high speeds is usually always the tires. I know my name isn't Scotty. I just wanted to help! I know how bad it can suck to have vibration at higher speeds.
Thanks Scotty. I switched the front and back wheels and my steering wheel's completely stopped wobbling on my Mitsubishi L200. Keep up the good work. Russ.
This also helps when you are experiencing alignment problems but worn parts and an alignment are not the culprit. My car pulled to the right but everything was perfect up front. Swapped front to back, back to front, problem solved. Obviously, one of my tires is worn improperly. Nothing a few burnouts can't fix.
I've watched a lot of mechanics and a lot of videos about cars and trucks and how to fix things on you tube and by far Scotty is down to business never Rambles on or repeats himself and wastes time he's fun to watch you actually learn something very very good UA-cam channel don't change anything you're unique keep it up Scotty
Every time I've dealt with a shaking steering wheel on a front wheel drive car, I've put the front of the car on jack stands, started the engine, put it in gear, and watched the wheels/tires as they rotated. Always found the problem to be a bad tire. A lot less work and I've zeroed in on exactly which tire.
it's 2024 and this comment cut my work in half. One of the front wheels was more obviously egg shaped than the other, swapped that side only with the back tire and problem solved. Half the work and now I know which tire is the problem child. Thanks Scotty (& FrankH)
Also watch out for popped off weights. On steel rims you'll have weights placed the edge of the rim to balance them. If one falls off it unbalances the tire and will make it wobble at higher speeds. Sometimes you can tell if a weight is missing as there's a spot with more or less dirt and wear to where it used to be. Just have to take it to a tire shop and ask for a balancing of the tires.
Scotty Kilmer aren't you meant to torque the wheels to the manufacturers recommendations because that what the dealers do to every wheel regardless if it came off or not
Great job on recommending the breaker bar over the air gun. Personally I'd take it a step further and say tighten it with whatever you carry in your car. For me, it's my 4-way lug wrench. Never leaves my passenger seat. That way if I get a flat, I KNOW I can take it off.
I'd say a wheel weight falling off and thus causing a balance issue is more likely than a wheel bending from some minor curb rash. Stick on wheel weights can come off fairly easily, but even the ones that wedge in between the rubber and the wheel can come off. I've also had steering wheel shake from mud, snow, and ice caught on the inside of the wheel which throws the balance off.
Recently I had a wobbling steering wheel at most speeds. The problem was a broken belt inside the tire which was making a spot in the tire bulge. The bulge was causing the wobbling. Luckily I checked it out because the tire would have blown out eventually.
My 2002 Honda Accord's steering wheel was VERY wobbly. I rotate my tires every 6K miles. I got it fixed by replacing the rack and pinion gear. Not cheap (about 50% of the Blue Book value of my car) but I got the shop to throw in an inspection sticker and alignment for free. My steering is very tight now and I love it.
Wobbly or loose? Wobble has no play, it’s just vibrates left and right a touch as you go. I hope they didn’t pull a $50 wheel from a junk yard and slap the old cover over it, you’d never know
I've had a 99 gs300 and an 08 gs460, I'm not exaggerating when I say I never had a single problem with either car. It's nice knowing your car isn't gonna break every few months lol
Scotty, I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey that the steering wheel shake left and right when I drive in slow speed. I have had all four new tires re-balanced twice, rotated the front tires to the back and forth, it still doing the same thing. The van has newly installed shocks and bushing, the front wheels also do not wobble as I checked it. The steering wheel tie rods also still in good shape, the only thing I found is the steering wheel is kind of when turning. By the way, I also replaced the right side motor mount recently. Where do you think I should going after to diagnose the problem.
I had a nasty shimmy at higher speeds (about 50 to 70 mph) so I assumed it was a balancing issue but it persisted after an alignment and balancing so I rotated the tires and that got rid of it therefore it narrowed it down to two wheels/tires. When the time came for new tires, I bought 4 new tires and the problem came back so got two more OEM wheels and swapped them out but it didn't cure the problem. Again rotating the tires/wheels proved the issue was with two specific wheels/tires. To end this story, it turned out to be two consecutive sets of bad tires! Top that!
Hey Scotty. I have a steering vibration that starts around 70mph. I also notice my windshield mounted phone vibrates as well. Had alignment checked and it's within spec. Has new balanced Michelin Premiere A/S tires. Suspension seems nice and tight. I do however hear what sounds like a worn bearing or bad fluid coupling in rear while driving. Sounds like a jet engine. 2006 Toyota Matrix 4WD w/ 75k miles.
Hey Scotty I just got some used tires for the front and. Before I bought them the steering work fine but after I put the used ones and then the steering wobble
Hi, love watching your videos. I had a question and be awesome if you'd give me your opinion. I have a car that shakes at about 45-50mph, tires were all balanced and rotated, no bent rim or imperfections were noted on the tire or rim. What could be causing it to shake in certain MPH? Thank you
@@masterk5066 I took it to a mechanic and he said it was most likely a bearing that was bad but never had it done since for that specific car the parts were expensive and not very common
I spent a weekend driving a new Fiesta, great steering feel but now that I am back in my old Corolla, the steering feels loose and disconnected, I tried the same test you did and it's ok I suppose it is just worn out suspension parts vs brand new ones.
Thanks for your video, as part of regular maintenance, I have rotated my wheels back to front and now steering wobbling started, what you suggest now, again I should rotate my car to original position as earlier?

Can you do a video showing us if it's better to change the boots or to change a whole wrecking pinion assembly. I have a Nissan titan 2008 I'm not sure what I should do.. I get a lot of mix information...
Hey Scotty how are you? So here's my situation my car was in an accident and wasn't bad my fender was messed and some scratches on my rim. Body shop made it look like nothing happens. They did the alignment and the rim was rebalanced. I picked up my car and hoped on the freeway and noticed a wobble, took the car to get rebalanced the from two tires and I still have the wobble. If anything I think the wobble got worse, tie rods, ball joints and everything looks good. Someone told me it could be the hub plus I never touched that since I got the car in 2017 it's a 2013 Dodge Charger RT
@scottykilmer - My 2001 Mazda MPV is doing something odd in the steering. When I accelerate from a complete stop, the steering wheel jerks to the right about 45 degrees. The car continues to drive straight, and if I pull the steering wheel to "straight," I end up going off to the left. Get this, though: as I let off the accelerator once I have reached my cruising speed (anywhere from 35-65 MPH) the steering wheel returns to center and the car continues driving straight. My local tire shop checked out my front end thoroughly and found the rack and pinion to be nice and tight, as well as the tie rod ends - no play in them at all. Ditto for my bearings. There's no play in the wheels with the front end jacked up. Did find the bushings and ball joint were shot on the passenger side, so we replaced both lower control arms; we also found the struts were frozen so I replaced them as well. So, what's left? Could the transmission be sending too much torque just to the passenger side at low speed during acceleration? Could the brakes not be disengaging sufficiently on the passenger side, dragging down the right side and causing it to pull the steering wheel? The most puzzling thing about it to me is that the car drives straight when accelerating at low speed even though the steering wheel pulls to the right pretty significantly.
two inquiries. First, I thought when tires were rotated you wanted to take the rear tires to the opposite front side? Or was this just trouble shooting, not rotation? The second, I am feeling a wobble sometimes in my steering. Most noticeable when I get above 40mph. And I have hit some curbs. I guess this isn't a question as much as me saying I probably ought to rotate the tires and see what happens...
Sure he might have a good feel for it, but too tight and you warp brake rotors, too loose and lug nuts & wheels fall off. If he's going to show how to do things he should show people the best (right) way so a poor unsuspecting person doesn't screw it up.
I'm sorry but there are too many variables to have a "feel" for lug nut tightness. He needs to use a torque wrench, this guy is a terrible "mechanic" if you ask me.
Hi, Scotty I have a 2003 honda civic had a problem with the rubbing sound coming from the back wheels going around corners change the bearings and the sound was still there, it turned out to be rushed on the hubs rubbing. Bearings cost $111 all need was a hammer knock off the rushed. a well better safe than sorry.
Scotty if a car has perfect rims and tires and suspension parts also look fine, what else could cause a minor high frequency shaking at speeds over 80 mph?
scotty can you make a video explaining how to tell and put spark plug wires in the correct cylinder? I changed my spark plug wires and I think I might have crossed them but how could I tell which ones are crossed? My car has been idling before the spark plug wire change so determining crossed wires by the idle: I don't think will be of good use.
Did you spin the wheel around while up in the air to check for visual runout? You can usually see a bunch with a wheel bent enough to shake the steering wheel.
once bent, aluminum rims can not be properly balanced in most cases, so this is a spare tire now, as this car had a good full rim and tire as the spare. They used to actually make them right like this, now many cars have no spare, or a crappy small stupid spare
Scotty my car has a staggered setup and I just put new tires on. There is now a slight vibration felt through the seat at around 60 KPH and 100KPH but at no other speeds in between, above or below the aforementioned speeds. Would that indicate an issue with the rear tires since the slight vibration can't be felt through the steering?
Very common. Always hand tighten the lug nuts using a torque wrench set to the manufacturer's specified tension for your car. Never trust a tire shop to do it right.
Absolutely agree!, a common issue I see with my circle of friends is "warped rotors" when it's just plainly uneven film on the rotor people just expect their brakes to take it all unfortunately, a little knowledge goes a long way
Scotty, hope you can help. Mercedes Benz c180 kompressor automatic, 2004, mileage 52,000. Changed timing chain and tensioner, turned the engine over a number of times to check the timing marks then, when turning the ignition on, the hazard flashers came on but could not be turned off using the hazard switch. Switched off and then turned the key again (no hazard lights) and.... nothing, except the click of the starter solenoid. Checked the engine again and found I could not turn the engine (I did turn it anti-clockwise, only to make sure the engine had not locked up). Checked the timing chain well in case anything had fallen into it but was clear. Have you had any similar experience with this model? Great show and thanks, Ted Murphy (based in London, UK)
those are bears to put timing chains on, obviously something went wrong on that work and will have to be put back on correctly and PRAY no damage was done turning the engine over and bending valves possibly. Good luck
Scotty, re. the Mercedes as discussed: The problem was discovered when the drive belt ( which was renewed) was removed and, before removing the timing chain cover, tried turning the engine and IT TURNED once again. The problem was the alternator "pulley" having seized up (it has a free wheel system? incorporated which allows it to turn anti-clockwise). However, on removing it and checking again, it started to turn normally.....this is one amazing car but I will never work on another as I consider it a poorly designed car lacking any real quality. Just thought I would let you know how I got on, in case any of your viewers ever experience a similar problem when changing a timing chain on one of these "dogs". This is a vert informative show put across in a clear and simple way. Many thanks for your help. Ted Murphy.
So my 2001 Honda accord always drove perfect, but I noticed it was pulling to the right so on the passenger side there was some thread on the inside of the tire exposed so I had a tire place put a new tire on it. Now my steering wheel wobbles a little bit. I did put the back tire on the driver side in the front And put the other one on the back. But it still wobbles a tiny bit now. Did they just balance the tire wrong? It was fine before I got the tire put on

I had the same issue. Is it okay to leave the unbalanced tires at the rear?
Thanks Mr. Scott, it fixed my steering wheel very well, following your instructions....
Hi Scotty, is it normal steering wheel shaking like in this video on bad roads? Need advise please
Scotty, set an example, use a torque wrench on the lug nuts!
If youre doing it for 49 years, you have the experience of feel how tight how loose to tighten bolt and nuts
Sure he might have a good feel for it, but too tight and you warp brake rotors, too loose and lug nuts & wheels fall off. If he's going to show how to do things he should show people the best (right) way so a poor unsuspecting person doesn't screw it up.
Well, if you 're not sure what you doing then don't do it. Ask Scotty or a good mechanic. There's a ton of DIY channels. It's free.
I'm sorry but there are too many variables to have a "feel" for lug nut tightness. He needs to use a torque wrench, this guy is a terrible "mechanic" if you ask me.
Justin Franklin no one cares about your opinion. Besides how hard is it to tighten lug nuts? Righty tighty lefty loosey, variables my ass.
mine has a little play, I would say about 5mm but comes from the steering box. do I have to replace the steering box or is there a cheaper fix?
Merry Christmas Scotty 🎄
Hi, Scotty I have a 2003 honda civic had a problem with the rubbing sound coming from the back wheels going around corners change the bearings and the sound was still there, it turned out to be rushed on the hubs rubbing. Bearings cost $111 all need was a hammer knock off the rushed. a well better safe than sorry.
Thanks, i always love your videos from the Bahamas
Scotty if a car has perfect rims and tires and suspension parts also look fine, what else could cause a minor high frequency shaking at speeds over 80 mph?
I bought a few used tired and the guy put them back on with a airgun so I hope I can get them off if I need to . thanks for the vid
Hey Scotty what are your thoughts on a 2001 Chevy Silverado 3500
scotty can you make a video explaining how to tell and put spark plug wires in the correct cylinder? I changed my spark plug wires and I think I might have crossed them but how could I tell which ones are crossed? My car has been idling before the spark plug wire change so determining crossed wires by the idle: I don't think will be of good use.
Replace them one at a time and you'll never have that problem
Doing this when I get home and hopefully it works!
600k subscribers coming up soon. Congrats!
Hey, I know a lot of Scottys viewers are in the USA. Who you guys voting for tonight ?
I'm voting for Scotty Kilmer and Free Vehicle Care.. 👍
I have another question for you what if you did with what what you did but it still does it what can it be wheel bearings or what
Thanks Scotty! Worked for me!
Did you spin the wheel around while up in the air to check for visual runout? You can usually see a bunch with a wheel bent enough to shake the steering wheel.
yea, and it showed nothing
Would having a single slightly bigger tire also cause wobbling?
cute kitty but what if swapping wheels does'nt fix it? and steering only wobbles at high speed (70mph) could be the rotors?
Thanks Scotty! That did the trick!
Won't hurt anything on the rear?
Would remount/ rebalance of the tire on the rim work as well? Guess it depends if the rim has damage from hitting the curb.
once bent, aluminum rims can not be properly balanced in most cases, so this is a spare tire now, as this car had a good full rim and tire as the spare.
If it shakes while you're turning can it be the same reason like in this video?
thank u scotty . you are an angel
My Honda c'rf is doing this bad I'm going to try this thank you that would be great I'll let you know
Wow, must be extremely humid there in east part Texas right?
Shouldnt you use a torque wrench or torque sticks to tighten lug nuts?
Hi? How it going? I have a 2016 Jeep . When I go 60 mph the steering wheel shake? How do I fix the problem?
your the man scotty
can this also be caused by warped brake discs?
They pulsate and shimmy when applying the brakes.
wholeNwon thanks thats whats happening on my golf 4 at the moment
wholeNwon I hate when the rear brakes stuff up, my ass vibrates like crazy 😜
Great show and thanks,
Ted Murphy (based in London, UK)
those are bears to put timing chains on, obviously something went wrong on that work and will have to be put back on correctly and PRAY no damage was done turning the engine over and bending valves possibly. Good luck
Scotty, re. the Mercedes as discussed:
The problem was discovered when the drive belt ( which was renewed) was removed and, before removing the timing chain cover, tried turning the engine and IT TURNED once again.
Ted Murphy.
Thanks again scotty. I swapped my front tires with the rear tires. It was wobbling at high speed over 140kmh. Now it's gone 😃.
It was fine before I got the tire put on
Great video Scotty
