Rebuilding The Steering Cylinders! | Franna Crane Project | Part 19

  • Watch this satisfying transformation of rebuilding the steering cylinders off our Franna Crane! First up, we have a bit of a battle on our hands with a clevis seized on a rod. But with some strategic drilling, boring, and careful removal we free the clevis while saving its threads. The culprit? Roll pins AND Loctite! Next, we use the lathe to turn some tough induction hardened material into two brand new cylinder rods. After getting all the components cleaned, we install new seal kits in both the piston and glands. Then, the hydraulic press comes into play for the meticulous reassembly of both cylinders. Finally, a fresh coat of paint completes the rebuild and gives our steering cylinders a well-deserved makeover. This video takes you straight to the action, showing the entire satisfying process from start to finish. Stay tuned for the next Franna crane project video or catch up on all the previous videos below 😎👇

      @austinadventure 3 місяці тому +12

      @SlartiMarvinbartfast exactly, I work on a fair amount of kubota tractors, and toyota forklifts. The oem replacement part costs are just ridiculous...

    • @Beakerbite
      @Beakerbite 3 місяці тому +20

      @@SlartiMarvinbartfast It's not all exorbitant. Curtis doesn't ever talk about the cost of shop time because he doesn't want his competition to know what he charges, but it's a real cost. Manufacturers have to keep molds, jigs, and whatever else special tooling they require to build bespoke parts. That space and maintenance of tooling comes at a cost and has to be factored in to the sale price of replacement parts. For anything that's kept in stock, there's also the stocking cost to maintain storage of the available parts.
      Curtis is definitely saving customers money and doing good work recycling as much material as possible, but he cannot replicate the hardest manufacturing process, casting. Any issues with casting require paying for those custom parts to be remade which is the bulk of the expense of new parts. And those extremely expensive parts typically have very large castings that are even more expensive to produce. So the manufacturers are definitely taking a juicy profit, but the parts are expensive to manufacture.

    We used to send all our cylinders to the shop if they were leaking. Since I’ve been following you I now do all our rebuilds in house. Unless there is damage to the rods or cylinder bores.
    Thanks from Warsaw NC, USA

    Ms. Karen, a question please. Which takes longer.. the actual work Mr. Kurtis does in the shop or the time that you spend editing the video. I must say that as proficient and knowledgeable he is, the same should be said about your contributions. You are, in my opinion, one of the best videographer and content editors on UA-cam today. Cheers and keep up the good work!!!

      I couldn't agree more. The quality of the videography contributes a great deal to the channel. Different shot angles, special shots (i.e. "through the headstock"), and attention to background noise just makes every video a work of art.

    Loved the trick of the curled paper to stop the paint on the pins surface in the clevice. That was working smarter not harder... lots of little things you do that seem simple come from a lot of experience. It really shows. I hope you both continue to enjoy putting these together as i certainly enjoy watching and learning new approachs. I so need to get your banana calipers to give to give to an american collegue of mine coming out soon, that i stir him up about his freedom units.

    OMG you really are pronouncing words differently now. All of a sudden when you say the word "Banana" it sounds a lot like "Inch". Now that's weird.
    You are really putting a lot into that crane, I'm super impressed.
    I'm looking forward to when you rebuild the cab. I never thought you'd take that on too. I'm sure it will be just as awesome as the rest of the stuff you've done.

Thank you for acknowledging our July 4 celebration. Your understanding of your viewers many different cultures is another example of your professionalism. I would like know how you determine the amount of relief for the O ring set back. I don’t remember ever seeing you with such clean hands at the start of a shoot. Really like the price comparison Kurtis provides between 'just buy new' and refurbishing the old part. Looking forward to the full comparison once the crane is up and running again versus buying a used one in 'just needs some TLC' condition.
    Knowing Kurtis, his Franna crane will probably have the most tricked out cab on it, though :)
