In this video which is the second of 4 videos where I try and review a car within 10 mins, I have a good close look at a car that has been teasing me for months, the new Arteon R Shooting Brake.
It's quite a lot more money than the Golf R Estate but is it worth it for the extra equipment and incredibly stylish bodywork?

that rear 3/4 view looks like a 4 door Scirocco on steroids! Great looking car.

The interior looks lovely add the buttons for climate control and also the steering wheel add buttons that’s it.
Does look nice, but too pricey for little old me. Would be fun though.
That was fantastic! It looks to be a proper machine for high speed autobahn cruising, but still capable of the odd little hairpin 😆

I'm currently in a focus RS and a Clio IV RS. Looking at selling both and buying a nice luxurious car that can fit anything/everything. Would this be a suitable replacement? Or is this too luxurious? I want something that handles almost as well as both my current ones, but realise there will be compromise of course.
Er, no. It’s an oddly proportioned car with massive overhangs. It’s bloody expensive too.

Hmmm, it's a lot of money that is true. Let's face it, the R brand is a money spinner for VW with greater profit margins than normal cars, simple as that. There's no other reason they'd be bringing all these models out and creating trendy videos to promote them.

Smaller boot/trunk than a golf estate. Nice shape though, the Golf estate is a bit utilitarian but suits my needs.
Golf 8 Estate is a little bit swoopier than the old one but still not a patch on this for aesthetics

Reminds me of the passat R36
The R36 is a cool car (though was massively unreliable when new), it's USP was the 3.6 litre narrow angle V6 under the bonnet which this car doesn't have. In fact it's like putting the 3.2 in the Passat putting a Golf engine in this. Just a shame they couldn't give it a bit more hp like the 333 PS engine listed in the Golf handbook. Problem is the Golf R is producing well over its stated 320 I guess.
Think im more impressed by the little FWD i20N clearly catching up from behind......
We were limited to 55 mph so it's not "drive as fast you can" plus talking to the camera would slow me down BUT I'd expect the I20N to be close as it's well suited to that track and power to weight probably isn't. massively different (it just needs to way 66% of the Arteon R to be a match roughly)

Missed opportunity from VW, such a good looking car. This should have come with a stronger engine and a better AWD system.
What’s different between this and the Passat estate?
Apart from the looks? Don't know about other markets but the UK the biggest-engine petrol Passat estate on sale is now the 1.5 TSi at 150hp, and the most powerful diesel available is 200 hp, and the car is only available front wheel drive. So if you want a high power 4wd large-ish estate then it's the Arteon or nothing, out of the VW range
Passat is being phased out. At least for North America.

Standard VW stuff. For the price you pay I would expect a more posh interior. They just recycled the MK 7.5 and mixed it with the Golf 8 interior. For Arteon I would like to see a brand new unique interior.
VW desperately needs someone to design a more pleasant cabins. They're utilitarian, but not very pleasant to sit in. Just an endless field of depressing gray. Even the leather seats look dull and entry level.
In other news, slow down. Move in and hold for 2 sec., them move back out. You moved in and out so quickly I couldn't focus and got dizzy.
VW have had to cut costs across the entire range to fund the lawsuits from the emissions scandal (mainly in the US). So the quality and feel of the components is less than previous models.
@@jixuscrixus1967 Cut profit, and put it back into the product. Best way to teach and learn a lesson. Anyway, having a good power-plant and drive train is great, but if VW is going to maintain its lead, they're going to need to produce a product that looks at least equal to what the Japanese, and now, the Koreans are putting out.
The R is go, the R-Line is all show. But when you approach 50 grand, you need to do both. Consumers need to see (and touch) where their money is going.
It’s a real shame they’re so dear at the moment… I may keep an eye out for used in the right spec next year though..
Nice review Andrew. Would you say it’s on a par with Audi for refinement?
A6 is in a different league, A4 is close but still edges it I'd say. Not sure pillarless glass is ideal for max refinement. I still long for the S4 and S6 TDIs I drove in 2019, awesome cars and proper quattro not haldex.

Problem with the Golf 7.5 Estate was road noise. Not sure what the 8R is like, nor the Arteon? Is the sound deadening better, as it really needed to be.
The bridge stone tires make then noisey
@@M_S-pf3bt My Golf R Estate came with Bridgestone, but Mich PS4 & CrossClimate still had too much much road noise intruding.

@@M_S-pf3bt Jeez. Tyre/road/wind noise and engine noise are two totally separate things you tool. As it is, I note the Arteon has double glazing as an option which I guess deadens the tyre/road/wind noise to some degree. And by the by, got rid of the R for a M340i

You and me both David! SUVs handle really well considering the weight, but that tech and engineering applied to a lower car is even better and always will be
Very nice. Effortless at those speeds. The little I20N would probably be rattling it’s bolts off at 100mph, but as you say, a lot more fun car in the twistys. It’s interesting all the different markets and demographics that car manufacturers try and cater for now. Ultimately, more choice is better for the consumer…..great video. As per👍

Looks very nice, I would rather have slightly smaller wheels and a little more tire though.
I also miss the gear shifter from the original Passat CC.
Problem is that it's such a big car the 19s look lost, if only they had a bit more offset, that would help, even the 20s sit in too much
why don’t you have a 4k camera they are not expensive at all
It’s the processing that’s an issue, my laptop struggles with file size as it is. Video editing is very memory hungry. I will try on shorter vids soon though. At least audio quality is sorted now 👍

Andrew. If you get to it can you talk to us about the gearbox? MK 8 has the all electronic chicken nugget shifter, this I presume, the MK 7.5 stick manual link?
Why so if it's running the new platform, new engine etc or am I missing something.

Hi Graeme, when Arteon launched in 2017 it had the 7.5 style shifter and nothing has changed there, the platform is the same as before and is basically the same as Mk8 Golf (as well as 7 and 7.5) so presumably it can run either form of shifter (like it can run manual and auto parking brakes). The engine is "new" but still basically the same as the EA888 280 that was in the Arteon from launch.

I'd enjoy a Dacia Sandero on that circuit (probably shouldn't admit that but anyway!). Seriously though the fact I can drive pretty quickly in a big heavy car on there and talk to the camera and not have a mishap is a testament to the hard work of the engineers.

Andrew , I was offered a demo recently with 1500 miles on he clock for £42000 very tempting when compared to the top spec Golf R MK8 Performance Pack and I don't need a noisy expensive exhaust.
Jeez that is cheap, clearly RRP is pie in sky (again)
@@volkswizard Car was the fastback saloon demo at 1500 miles ,advertised at £44990 so I cheekily offered my T-ROC R PX plus cash. they agreed to offer £34500 for it at £42000 for the Arteon R

Arteon is possibly too big for a lot of people plus yes indeed price and mpg and Co2 are not in its favour. I wouldn't say Golf R Estate was cheap at £40k but they are clearly going for heart not head here and buyers generally pay more for that. Just not sure a VW badge can carry it off. It's a lot cooler than equivalent Audis though

I think it's misses a trick having the same power as the golf r, I think it should of been about 350bhp to distance it self from the golf, still looks a good looking motor

However, the same spec Golf R estate will not be cheaper. The basic spec on these Arteon R’s is crazy you literally don’t need to spec anything and you can pick up a pre-build in registers Arteon R for 46k… I’ve seen people asking 50k for used Golf R’s.

I really like that car - I'd have it over a fast Audi Avant any day! Looks much classier.
The price difference over the Golf R isn't quite as pronounced as £10k - I specced a Golf R (to roughly match my own 7.5 Golf R Estate) & it came out at over £47k! The Arteon R Shooting Brake has a lot less that I'd need to option.
In short: I love that VW have encroached into the market occupied by more premium German brands (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc) & come up with something that's the measure of them - well done VW👍.
I don't think I could afford this motor, but I'd love one!
In reality it isn’t a measure because the Audi S4,Bmw M340i & C43amg all offer silky smooth V6’s.
@@johnguidetti5839 if it goes the same, who's caring! The Arteon R will have a harder 'edge' than those sort of executive cars anyway - yes, it probably isn't as fast as an S4, for instance (although that's a diesel, I believe?), but it's not as costly.
I've the earlier version of that engine in my 7.5 Golf R Estate, it's pretty good (& smooth). I'll grant you, a V6 would be nice (& sound amazing), but, sadly, 4cyl turbos are easier re emissions, etc

The prices of cars in general are getting ridiculous. Yes, i realise im in the minority buying cars in cash but the monthly prices are reflected in the higher prices anyway. Its about the same as an S5 Sportback

You are getting the Golf R and a choice of gearboxes which EU doesn't get. Arteon would fit right in I'd say but maybe 4 pot engine just won't cut it?

@@volkswizard We actually do get the Arteon but I'm sure it'll be short lived. I hear the GTI we get won't have both port and DI.
Sorry boys you lost me completely here... I'm a hatchback man and will only look at a saloon if its a rental and there's 4 of us on holls or a wedding at a stretch but the only time i want to be in a bus like this is when I'm lying down in a box in the back!
