8:53 I so miss surrealistic CGI. Photorealism is fine and all, but I feel like we lost something when the VFX industry went all-in on it. Computers were capable of wholly unique expressive work impossible in any other medium, and this movie is one of the best examples. (And yes, I also watched the hell out of the 'Minds Eye' compilations back in the day. 😀)
I would love to see your take on THE RELIC based on Douglas Preston's bestselling novel. The books are fantastic and I enjoyed the movie, even though I wish they had kept more of the brains of the novel instead of focusing on the gore.
I think Stephen King hates this adaptation more than Kubrick's version of The Shining. After the success of Carrie, Salem's Lot and The Shining studios are prone to buying up every story (before any of them have even read it) from that writer and after a certain dollar amount has been spent in development, it has to be sold, the rights lapse or it gets shoved into production. Other infamous cautionary tales along these lines are Hudson Hawk (1991)and Hero (1992). I choose these two as they took place when I was working in LA. The latter, in my own small way, was something I tried to kill. Seeing this bizarre momentum of an incredibly bad idea is hypnotic and horribly detailed. Mitigating or erasing the red from the corporate books can lead to some astonishing folly. I was also trying to riff on a modern Frankenstein script at the time too. Damn, I forgot Jenny Wright was in this. Great background information on the CG effects houses, TUG
It seems a cut above the slasher films of that day. At the time there was the phrase "god on the system". It refered to people who had administrative access, which on certain systems, allowed them access to everything on the system.
An odd little movie with brosnan cast against type as a villain? Often regarded as a clothes horse brosnan a far better actor than given credit for. Fahey suffers much the same problem he always been a good actor to match his undoubted ability I don't really believe TLM offers either much. Sold as a virtual Reality movie I was massively disappointed by it (as were many of my friends at media college) it lacked something. After saying that it a long long time since I seen it so will try to find a copy to watch. Great review . T2 $100 million dollars budget wasn't sorely for the CGI used. although it still outspent T2 by a country mile & good to see a movie calling out the church so long ago for abuse
I went bananas over this movie when it first came out but looking back at it now it has not aged well 😂not as well as TRON. It was the story elements that seemed a little too fantastical especially when Jobe willed himself into the computer or the bees coming out of the computer. The graphics are so so, again not as crisp as TRON but serviceable. But like you said they are now forever connected to that Mind’s Eye video😂 I didn’t even touch the sequel.
I remember seeing Lawnmower Man 2 exactly once and I loathed it. It's like someone thought "We can't get Jeff Fahey back, who can replace him in this virtual reality movie?" Then someone chimes "Yeah someone like Max Headroom. He's like a virtual reality guy, right?" Then they literally get Max Headroom and NO CGI CYBER WORLD was featured. So corny.
Rip Taylor: What's this, an audience or a funeral? Now, pay attention, please. But I'm a little nervous because Harvey was a personal friend of mine, and there's not a person in this room that Harvey Pitnik did not touch. I must say, he touched me for 40 bucks and Steve for 20😅
I've not had the privilege of seeing it, but there is a "Dollar Baby" adaptation of The Lawnmower Man that, by all accounts, is far superior. For those who don't know, Stephen King has a long-standing deal where he retains overall rights, but a student filmmaker can make a non-commercial adaptation of one of his short stories and he gets one dollar and a copy of the finished product. Said films, usually shorts, can be screened in classes and film festivals. Some that also have "official" film adaptations are considered far superior to their studio brethren.
I'm not sure how this movie didn't have product placement for Mr. Bubble. The main problem with this film is that, as mentioned, it's been told before and with far superior results. Otherwise, it's pretty "meh". And I don't care what you or the screenwriter of The Foreigner say, Pierce Brosnan can never be the "bad guy". You take that back! Welp, we're done with the reimagining of Charly. Time to move on to the reimagining of Fantastic Voyage...
Pretty much a revision of OUTER LIMITS' 1963 episode THE SIXTH FINGER with "virtual reality" standing in for the "evolution machine" of the old series, so much so that Jobe even has a variation on the famous line OL's Gwyllm Griffiths snarls at the police sent to take him in: GG: Your ignorance makes me ill and angry! JS: Your naive idiocy makes me very angry! ua-cam.com/video/lBdJUuHl6lo/v-deo.html
Yeah, I know I mispronounced “Jaron Lanier.” What can you do?
well I believe there was some mention of crawling around naked behind a lawnmower chomping on the grass
He's certainly no Oskar Homolka...
I think you pronounced it correctly.
This movie was WAAAY ahead of its time, in fact many of the themes we seem to be wrestling with today and in our near future.

Amen to all of that! I completely agree.
That ending is TOO good!!
Absolute gold, it will always keep this movie in good stead.

Hero ? Is that Accidental hero the Dustin hoffman geena Davis movie
It seems a cut above the slasher films of that day. At the time there was the phrase "god on the system". It refered to people who had administrative access, which on certain systems, allowed them access to everything on the system.
Great review. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
I suspect the appearance of "Simple Jack" in "Tropic Thunder" was inspired by Jobe.
I suspect that too.
Find out more info on project Brainstorm!
It’s in the works!

I've only seen the movie once. Despite it's charms, it felt to me like a story that I've heard before. Maybe I should see it again.
Beyond the Minds Eye was so damn cool. I got the VHS when it was new. I have no idea how many times I have watched it.
I actually broke my VHS copy from overuse. I didn't even know that was possible!

I could only get about 15 minutes into the sequel. I have a HIGH tolerance for bad movies, but I just couldn’t.
Nice review!
My opinion is that the character of Job is terribly overacted as a simpleton, which - I must admit - ruins this film for me.
I can’t deny the acting is pretty hammy

They apparently did ask him to come back.

A decent watch during the early years of CGI.

Yeah, I have a Sifi classic I would like you to cover... the Bible
This movie is a cult classic in my eyes

Indeed. 😎
Stay away from the sequel. It retcons the ending of this film and it has zero mention of Dr Angelo.
Jobe has almost the same name as the suffering biblical character Job. Pure coincidence?
Definitely not. 👍🏻
@@TheUnapologeticGeekamazon women on the moon movie one of the funniest sequels ever made😅
@TheUnapologeticGeek Can U touch up on a sci-fi movie called "My Science Project"?! 💪🏼💪🏼🔪🔪🔪
I will put it on the list. I remember seeing it years ago!
