    Palpatine is my favorite villian in all of fiction. Everything he did, from the murder of his family to lying to Anakin to pull him closer to his side, was all for his own gain. The thing is, the Vong would have always been beaten. They were a far smaller faction than any significant galactic power. The only reason why they managed to do such mess was because the Galaxy wasn't prepared to fight another major war merely 6 years after a treaty with the Empire that ended a decades long most devastating war of all. Even then, the New Republic could have beaten the YV early on had they responded with an immediate counterattack. But the leadership and bureaucrats on Coruscant dismissed the invasion as a local outer-rim threat.

    Palpatine was one of the pure evil Sith out there. Everything he ever did was in his own self-interest.
    However, an interesting topic is looking at others in Empire, like Thrawn who actually believed this was the best approach to stopping the Vong. He speaks to people in both Canon and Legends who point out all the evil and oppression, and tells them that there is an even greater threat and evil out there and he believes the Empire has the best chance to stop it, which is why he fights for it, he sees it as the lesser of two evils. Would we consider Thrawn evil because of all this? It is quite the question of debate. Palpatine was absolutely evil, so there is no debate to be had, he was never a hero, but characters like Thrawn, or as you pointed out, Raven, are a lot harder to determine and are much more debatable. I think either of them or similar characters would be a cool idea for a video topic later.
    Also, this is you're 996 video Geetsly, and at your rate of 4 videos a week, that means that this time next week you'll hit 1000. I can't wait for that. :)

      I think many folk, due to Thrawn being such a popular character (heck, I like em too!), are perhaps giving Thrawn a bit too much benefit of the doubt. Thrawn is very morally gray, however, despite him doing a fair few good things for his own reasons during his life, he still did a lot of evil things too. While he didn't do it out of malice, I want to mention that his intent hardly matters when consequences are as they are. Thrawns personal motivations and intent are interesting, but do they excuse what he did? Thrawn also ultimately always had his spots where he had no clue or little clue to what was going on. He was a tactician, not a people person. A military man, not one who is there to talk and look out for people. He thought of the world though the lens of battles, conflicts, and tactical maneuvers. Whatever benefited the battle he was waging currently is the path he would take. If the situation calls for calm, he will be calm. If it calls for bloodshed, then there will be bloodshed. It's best to remember to think of what Thrawn looked like to an average citizen of the Galaxy far far away...a guy who could seemingly turn his table completely at the drop of a hat: One moment offering you amnesty, while the other ready to blast your planet to dust if it served a larger tactical goal in his battle plan, where the benefit of your planet being kept as it is gets shadowed by the benefits of it being destroyed. Most likely, in such a situation, Thrawn would take the useful pieces of the planet, and sacrifice what are not useful for a bigger payout later. Even if his tactical judgement is sound, this sort of policy system still isn't very people friendly. Though, it is entertaining to see play out as a far removed reader.

      @@videocrowsnest5251 Now to be fair, I think intent should be considered, as there were a lot of good people who did fight for the Empire, like Gilad Paleon. He seemed like a good dude, despite working for the Empire and doing some bad things. I wouldn't say he was evil. Not everyone in the Empire was evil, just like not everyone in the Rebellion was good. Both sides had people fighting for good nobel reasons and people fighting for evil selfish reasons, Palpatine being the biggest example of the evil selfish reasons side.
      That's the interesting thing about Star Wars, especially the Clone Wars, it shows how things are a lot more complex and there are a lot more greys in the world or galaxy in this case, instead of just simple black and white.

    • @videocrowsnest5251
      @videocrowsnest5251 Рік тому +3

      @@zexalbrony4799 Intent as defense only goes so far. The imperials in the Empire's military were fully aware of what they were doing. The trick here I think is not to drag the Rebellion into this (though I understand why in your example you used them to demonstrate a veri valid point), but to look at what the Empire did on its own merits. To use a real world comparison: How far can just intent justify really nasty stuff? This question I think is a good launchpad to look into how the Empire as a faction is to be examined. It's tricky business, to be sure. I think safe to say that intent doesn't really excuse exterminatusing entire planets, or the intent being to establish a militarized society, as this is just one being trying to put their will over that of the billions who ought to have a say in it too.
      While things are complex, the Empire is without a doubt evil to the core. Even considering how everyone is morally gray, it was a very evil regime by all accounts that helped nothing. Noble intents hardly justify cruelty, oppression, and all that. Though true, not everyone in the Empire was evil, it still does not mean the Empire itself was anything but evil.

      @zexalbrony4799 Рік тому +4

      @@videocrowsnest5251 Oh yeah, the Empire as a whole is 100% evil. There is no doubt there.
      I was just pointing out how not every in it was evil themselves. Some of them would probably actually get along with some of the people in the Rebellion. In fact, I recall hearing in Legends how when the Rebellion became the New Republic, they were very fair to the people of the Empire they had captured. Those in just support roles, like the tech officers who just made sure the equipment like the computers were running properly, they got off pretty easily with very light sentences, which is fair. Like I imagine it was at worst a year or 2 in a New Republic prison, and the best they got was just some community service. Then the soldiers who blindly followed orders, they got harder sentences but not unreasonable ones, like several years in prison, but the actual decent ones who only followed the Empire out of fear or just wanted to be good soldiers like Dogma from The Clone Wars, probably got off all right, with a chance to get time off their sentence for good behavior and maybe even a chance to work for the New Republic when they got out so they could fight for an actual good cause instead of the lies of the Empire, since I don't see all of them as evil monsters, just brainwashed by all the Imperial propaganda and do want to do actual good. And then of course you have the true evil monsters like most of the Moffs who no doubt got executed for all their horrible crimes, which again is fair and what those monsters like Palpatine deserved.

The higher-ups of the Empire, which would include Thrawn and Paleon were Absolutely responsible for the greatest crimes of the Empire, not only for those they did directly, but also for being complicit in Imperial atrocities by knowing about them and still continuing to fight for that system.

    Exactly! Thank you for finally clarifying this. Palpatine is the MAIN villan of Star Wars (both canons), not the Vong or Tenebrae. It is him, who's the primary threat. Yes, he did know about them and yes, the Empire at its prime was far stronger than the vong fleets and would have stopped them propably before they could even enter the galaxy but it does NOT mean destroying the Vong was Palpatine's motivation. If he hadn't found out about them, everything would've still played out as it did. And if the Rebels had lost the Galactic Civil War, the galaxy's fate would've argubly been even darker than the goals of the Yuuzhan Vong. The latter wanted to destroy all of technology and replace it with their biotech, they wanted to build their civilisation on top of the previous one's ashes and subject the galactic society to slavery, transform it as part of their's or if not possible - destroy it. The Sith however wanted to ultimately saturate the entire existance with the dark side, brainwash ALL life and dominate it with their will. I don't think this is any better than the Vong. So yes, everything said in this video is correct.

    I actually have been voicing the thought of the theory that Palpatine was actually trying to prepare for the Yuuzhang Vong war for a really long time, I just didn't expect someone would twist that into portraying the horrific things Palpatine did as heroic. They were tyrannical, horrific and mercilessly brutal (and incompetent, holy Terra was he stupid sometimes...) But the lack of shields of Tie Fighters, the fact that the Empire NEVER adapted to fighting the Rebellion but stayed the way the way they were and so many other factors play into the concept that Palpatine wasn't even interested in combatting the Rebellion to the point he never took it seriously (till it killed him) because he was possessed with preparation for something far bigger and far more horrific.
    He also never told the Galaxy about it because he just didn't care about the wider Galaxy and as with Operation Cinder, if he wasn't around to deal with the Yuuzhang Vong, he wanted the Galaxy to suffer as a result.

However, the military machine of the Empire -- especially if it had more officers like Thrawn, who actually cared -- would have been a very effective weapon against the Vong, certainly more than the infighting of the New Republic. I wish Thrawn had succeeded in his campaign. At the Battle of Bilbringi, he specifically wanted Home One to be taken intact. I think he wanted to talk to Ackbar, to give him proof of the Vong's existence and of their threat tot the Galaxy. I'm sure Ackbar would have listened, and Thrawn's Empire and the New Republic *together* could have really prepared for the invasion. It's a real shame we didn't get to see *that* future for Star Wars.

    If Thrawn, or someone else, had managed to inform Palpatine that the Yuuzhan Vong COULD overthrow his world, it may help explain the motivation behind his unrivaled ambition to control everything; as plenty of powerful sith before him either never bothered, or were unsuccessful... It helps to show that Palpatine perhaps felt a threat as justification of his goals and potential. I think Palpatine already inherently believed (being a sith), regardless of an external military threat to justify it, maintaining order through force and dominance is inherently the only way to rule - and that anything is permissible to get to that point, and to win.
    Palpatine does say to luke that he's mistaken about a "great many things" which is vague enough to work here.
    It could very well be that Palpatine took it upon himself to finally act, using the Yuuzhan Vong threat, or potential of another force taking advantage before him, as motivation. He chose to become every side of a war of his own construction, to build up a supreme standing galaxy wide military force... If he didn't do everything possible to become a living god of a military empire, than many forces that could possibly take over (post-galactic empire republic, for example) would be comparably incompetent to stopping a force-resistant military like the Yuuzhan Vong.
    Palpatine wasn't inherently concerned about the safety of the galaxy, but he was concerned about the safety of HIS galaxy, were it to become his.
