It has to be one of the most inspiring films ever made with a lot of heart. You cannot watch this film and not feel uplifted or emotional at the end. It didn't win the Best Picture Academy Award in 1976 for nothing.

Rocky 4 is pretty damn iconic with him beating the Soviets on their own turf and the fact that it was made during the Cold War..
The sequels all vary in quality. Rocky 2 and Creed are the best ones.

I remember going to visit my girlfriend in Monessen PA many years ago when I lived in Midland. We were looking to do something for Friday night. There wasn't much going on but we saw a semi-interesting movie in the paper that would get us away having to stay in with her family. That movie turned out to be Rocky. It is to this day one of the best movies I've seen. We were not boxing fans but we were blown away by the story and the characters.

Even the trailer gives me goosebumps. Stallone really is a brilliant writer. To come up with such an original idea & write it in 3 days is unbelievable. The score by bill conti is the only one that rivals the great John William's. When u watch it you feel the grit & realness of that philly neighborhood in the 70s. The Oscars really screwed up in the 70s. How did Stallone & burgess not win their oscars?? Same with al pacino not winning for either godfather. Are u kidding me ?? Brando as great as he was did not belong in the lead actor category but supporting actor & pacino should have been in the lead spot. It's like with the men if they are new & young they dont want to give it to them. Even brando went through that. He should have won for streetcar named desire. Art carney won over pacino . Does anyone even remember what movie art was in? They always do the sentimental award or the pay back award. If the godfather won best picture & rocky won best picture then how do the actors who carried those films not win ? The only time I thought the Oscar's got it right was when the silence of the lambs historically swept the top 5. The movie was brilliant & every person nominated for that film deserved their awards.
Anyway sly got robbed again for creed. At least he got the golden globe. The man deserves an oscar. Also its the opposite for the females. They give it to the young ingenue bc they are dying for actresses to take over. Really since Julia Roberts broke out no actress has really taken her place. Anyway rocky is def in most peoples top 10. It's a great tale of an under dog story. It has as much to do with boxing as gone with the wind had to do with the civil war.

Loved this movie and easily see why it won best pic that year. Being from the Philadelphia area, I truly believe that part of its success was in Stallones ability to capture the feel of the city during its filming, especially the Kensington area where alot of filming took place.
He used the cities lack of culture, economic recession and general malaise as a template for his character.
The Rocky Statue ( which at one time was thought of as trash by the city and art museum) has become the go to destination when visiting the city. A city that has the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall !!.
I tell young people from this area to see how Philadelphia was in the 70s and 80s, all you need to do is watch Rocky.

What's great about the trailer is it doesn't tell what the movie is about entirely. You know he is a nobody trying to become something. Sure you see him hitting the beef and see his hands taped up, but for many they wouldn't have known he was a fighter.

My father watched this every night for over a week strait, as in went to the theatre, we didn't have video machines then. I went along for about 4 nights, guy just couldn't stop watching it.
Aww He probably could relate. How did he like the rest of the sequels? Did He get to see up to Rocky 6?

5. Rocky along with Star Wars Brought the Escapist Movie Genre back into the Mainstream. Rocky had the same appeal of Star Wars. Rocky had a Real Hero and a Happy Ending.
6. Rocky Balboa (2006) a great sequel that came out 30 years after the original and even Creed which was a great spin off
