I love that the history of all this stuff is being gathered up with interviews... it's truly fascinating, inspiring and just plain FUN to hear about it all!

I think We're at 50 years of Dungeon (official release anyway). Why is THAT not being celebrated?!

Working on several fronts, some major, some minor. A minor item is adding a 50th Anniversary tag to places where Dungeon is preserved like Board Game Geek and Wiki pages. The major thing is a presentation at Gary Con next year of the history of Dungeon put on by Paul Stormberg, the proprietor of The Collector's Trove on EBAY. There might be something at Gen Con next year, but they are focused on D&D this year. Who knows? Thanks for your interest.

Excellent little interview. I'd not heard of Dungeon! I had a great time looking up about it, and seeing all the different versions of the game, the different board and card art, etc. Fantastic! I guess a game like Hero Quest seems like a different take on this again.

Tolkein has a loooot to answer for. :D
Imagine big JRR, the grand master, behind the Dungeon Master's panel, or designing some epic computer game setting.
He would be next level. Heehee.

Thank you so much, David! My family and I have so much fun with this creation of yours, and D&D from Dave and you guys!
You mention the 10ft, 20ft, 30ft phone call thing, but it would be cool to hear you lay out and give us examples of how old school play sounds!
Getting rid of new school style play, and remembering what it used to be and sound like is hard for some of us older dudes! Blessings, sir!!

I owned and loved the 1981 edition as well as the 1989 "New Dungeon." Thank you, David, for providing so many hours of fun, and for sparking my imagination!

Your welcome! Little did I realize back in 1972 that the marathon session to create the prototype would lead to such a wide reaching enjoyment.

A classic fantasy boardgame from the early 1970's. Dungeon! 1975 (the Australian, Jedko version) was my introduction to world of D&D & FRPGs. The boardgame is a long time favourite of mine. I love how characteristics of the dungeon adventurer types carry over into Holmes' 1977 TSR Basic D&D RPG. For instance the Elf adventurer in Dungeon! has a 1-4 chance of detecting a secret door as does the Elf in Basic D&D. Classic D&D monsters are all there: Green Slimes, Black Puddings, Purple Worms & Red Dragons. Wizards cast Fireball spells. Treasures include magic swords, crystal boards, silver rings, bags of gold & magnificent gems & jewels. The game map features six levels of descending stair ways, secret doors, a crypt, wizard laboratory & King's treasure room. Adventurers can trigger traps, get teleported around the board, & the unfortunate can sustain serious wound, losing all their collected loot or even be killed. In optional rules dungeon adventurers can ambush one another, allowing team members to cooperate in preventing another player from winning. Megarry's Dungeon! has stood the test of time enjoying multiple reprints & revisions. A cracking game!

Awesome. My favorite board game's author and the first thief named McDuck. Great interview. My nephews and I played the 1990s version (by far the best quality edition) so much we added new rules, class bonuses vs monster types, level-ups, a boss that kept you in the Dungeon, to make things more interesting. Really, the game just needed some other reason to be there and more dungeons, which you can of course find, to increase replay value. Somehow I lost most of the time no matter what class I played! It set to make my own game that is between D&D and Dungeon, likely I will never publish it as lots of art is needed. (But Tolkien influencing D&D, No, you don't say. I do not think anyone anywhere ever noticed the resemblance).

Of course, if you don't scroll down from the clip, you might not see the comments! I hope you might still be around to read this reply after a whole year. I do appreciate your nice comments about my game and am glad you have received some enjoyment from my creation. Don't give up on your game seeing the light of day: we cannot control the Bird of Paradise landing in our nest, but we can draw comfort that creating something which gives us enjoyment, can be satisfying in and of itself. Game on!

This is really awesome Mr. Megarry. I’m currently working on a naval board war game called Keep Beating The War Drum! Based off of Admiral Yi and the events of the Imjin War. I don’t know if you’ll see this but I’m going to keep working on it and maybe I’ll sell it. Who knows lol have a good day

I love playing dungeon! I can get my non rpg playing friends to play and have a good time. Also I love not having to be the dm. I play solo a lot too and have some cool house rules that make a solo run more fun. I really want to watch secrets of blackmoor also.

Thank you for the praise! It is quite pleasing to see that my game is still enjoyable. That is a great thing to hear that you have house rules and play solo. Have you added your own monsters and prizes? They tell me the DVD for Secrets of Blackmoor should be available soon.

I realise that Zombies! is based on the same principles - a competive race in and out for loot and kills. But in that it's a competition, it's not roleplaying, which is co-operative gaming, and it prevents character roleplaying accordingly.

Well, you must realize I got rid of the referee from the entire system. I envisioned three games: Dungeon!, Castle! and Kingdom! Nobody picked up the other two games. I was going to have the Kingdom! game be the cooperative system that RPG's represent.

@@RobbieIsntAmerican It will have a map of the interior of a castle, with passages and rooms. It will have 4 secret entrances to the dungeon below and a resolution system for exploring the dungeon (unless you have a Dungeon! game, in which case, you can do the expedition that way). I am also going to add some cooperation between player rules. A preliminary map has been made and I am doing the map calibration analysis at the moment.

David created this in 1972. Parker Brothers rejects his idea, and then 5 years later, in 1977, they decide to jump on the bandwagon with a crappy copy-cat dungeon game called Dungeon Dice. Parker Brothers you're a joke!

    • @davidmegarry2125

They actually approached TSR in 1976 to be able to use the name Dungeon! It became a bone of contention between Gary and I and was part of the reason I left TSR.

@@davidmegarry2125 I'm sorry to hear that David : ( it's totally understandable that you should have been able to make the final call on this, since you created the board game, and Parker Brother's rejected your idea in the first place. It's unfortunate how power-hungry and dictatorial some people can get when they see some cash rolling in.. integrity & friendship just go out the door for them, and money is #1. Thank goodness that at least Arneson won his lawsuit. I hate it when someone tries to take credit and make profit from someone else's work and ideas. you deserve more credit and respect than how you were treated. Thank you for your contributions and all that you did David!

@@myau_cat342 EGG was punished for his sins with Arneson by the blumes just saying. Doesn't make it right and I do wish I lived in a timeline where the business guys hadn't pushed these dudes out, and that they had reconciled and collaborated during their working years though.
