I don't watch WWE routinely anymore but I have seen some of Gunther's stuff. Gunther has some talent and I can appreciate him being a safe in ring worker compared to the modern day spot fest/50 dives in a match where guys are always getting injured. I also like that he lost a lot of weight and got himself in good shape. But I don't see what the big deal about him is in terms of being a big star. His chop looks like it hurts, sure, but what is his character? I know they call him the "ring general" but that's a wrestling term used by internet fans or people that worked in the business to call someone who leads a match...it being a name on tv in a kayfabe sense doesn't work. If he at least was named General Gunther and he came out and cut promos like he was a military guy and cut down a person by telling the person their weaknesses to their face and what he will do to destroy them...and he either does it or gets himself DQ'ed and goes to far to do it and then he grabs the mic and says "mission completed" then that would look pretty intimidating, maybe even scary at times. When his stooges lose matches as well, you show backstage footage of him drilling them and making them do punishments as well to amplify how psycho/bad-ass/dangerous this guy could be. That'd be so much better than what they are doing with him now. Also being Intercontinental Champion for 600 days plus is unnecessary. A year reign as IC champ where he beats a ton of guys and then you push him into the main event scene and he beats Seth Rollins and forfeits the IC title would make him look strong as it is (he can claim he was an undefeated IC champ) Plus if this guy is holding the IC title...where's the belt to start to build up another star? It's how Miz, Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler got to be bigger stars...they had a mid card title they could win. None of the other talent on the roster are going to be able to get to experiment with the IC title because they are just wasting it on Gunther who doesn't need it at this point.

While it's okay to compare, it's unproductive when it becomes a constant theme, especially when AEW isn't yet competing at WWE's level in terms of attendance and ratings. Also having so many ex-WWE stars on the roster who often criticize their former employer doesn't help either. The show has just become washed WWE stars & indy talent. WWE featuring indie talent or stars from other promotions like TNA is different from AEW's situation with ex-WWE stars because of how each company approaches it. This constant comparison creates a narrative of competition even though AEW may not yet be on the same level in terms of audience size or mainstream recognition.
