My response to those who are complaining about replacements of certain voices: According to recent press releases, there are plans to re-record all of the announcements, in anticipation of the R211s. Social Media Influencer NewYorkNico will be in charge of organizing the personalties-a mixture of NYC Native Celebrities and neighborhood figures are in the running (in the coming months, he will hold a poll for people to choose the personalities) It may be sad to some that Jessica Ettinger and Dianne Thompson’s voices are in the process of being phased out (which is bound to happen, the original recordings are over 20 years old), and Catherine Cowdery and Kathleen Campion are no longer available (they have both retired professionally-Velina Mitchell is the only one on contract now)-but the reality is that within the coming years, ALL of the current announcements will be replaced. The familiar voices will disappear from the trains, but not from UA-cam (thank you Mr. Railfan!) and of course, our memories. Nothing is forever, especially in NYC. At least they will be making an effort to keep the voices human-most transit agencies have switched over to digital TTS systems. Perhaps the new voices will be a welcome change! I certainly wouldn’t mind hearing Debi Mazar or Pat Kiernan’s voices! (Too bad Bob Sheppard is no longer with us, I always thought they should have used his voice for 161st/Yankee Stadium)
Mr Railfan, you forgot that announcement about the elevator at Pelham Bay Park! "This Is An Accessible Station! The Elevator Is At The Rear Of The Platform!" And then at Hunts Point Avenue! "This Is An Accessible Station! The Elevator Is At The Front Of The Platform!" And at 125th street! "This Is An Accessible Station! The Elevator Is At The Rear Of The Platform!" And At Grand Central 42nd Street! "This Is An Accessible Station! The Elevator Is At The Rear Of The Platform!" And Et Cetra, Et Cetra!
@jared jenkins they didn't start updating the a division cars until mid 2021. In fact I've seen a few sets without them until a few months ago. This was recorded in 2019 and 2020.
Okay...I never heard those Cowdery announcements for "Westchester Square", "Parkchester", and "Morrison Avenue" before. When I was still working on the line, the Ettinger "Morrison - Soundview Avenues" was replaced with a Cowdery "Morrison Avenue - Soundview" recording when the station name was changed to the latter. (Although only a handful of trains ever received this station name update. Same with the rarity of hearing the Cowdery "Flatbush Avenue - Brooklyn College" on the (2) or the (5) lines.) Changing "Parkchester - East 177 Street" to Parkchester makes sense, but honestly could have been better done by just cutting the last part of the original announcement out. Removing "Soundview" and "East Tremont Avenue" makes zero sense. So, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and suggest that these new station name files accidentally slipped in from the failed (2)/(5) line pilot of shortening announcements to reduce dwell times. I believe Cowdery had recorded all of the station names in the A Division into "shorter" versions. (Like 14 Street - Union Square becoming just Union Square.) Maybe that's where these came from. EDIT - And now that I'm watching the rest of the video, I've also never heard the Cowdery "East 143 Street" (RIP St. Mary's Street lol), or "Third Avenue - 138 Street". Nothing was removed from the latter, so I guess it was rerecorded for the pilot to avoid confusing with Third Avenue - 149 Street. Still a mystery as to why it shows up here, unless the person programming this simply didn't care. DOUBLE EDIT - Hunter College is gone, too?!!? TRIPLE EDIT - Interesting if this program apparently somehow kept the Ettinger station names for Bergen Street, Grand Army Plaza, and Eastern Parkway - Brooklyn Museum, when the (5) lost them at all stations shared with the (2) and (3).
If they had Cowdery re-record all of the A-Division announcements for that pilot program, they probably should’ve actually replaced all of them instead of only swapping out a select few stations, like Union Square or Grand Central. It might’ve actually made the pilot more successful than having that hodgepodge of announcers like it was 2003 on the 5 or something.
Shorting the hyphenated parts are stupid, that doesn't cause dwell times. I don't understand why they think announcements did that when it's the damn passengers
