I think it's because single guitar that sounds good has whole frequency window/range for itself. problems starts to appear when you trying put in that window bass, drums, vocals, synths etc. Window won't become bigger...
Man that is so critical and I have trained myself (after years of struggling with this) to throw a tone into the mix prior to passing judgement. That weird "whatever" warble or frequency you are hearing on the solo guitar may just sound bad ass in the mix.

I prefer using a digital model and reamping that out a mic and cab that is in my bathtub. That’s how the black album was recorded and it is still lit af. They don’t call him bob rock for no good reason. He rocks!

1) so cabs should be flat like studio monitors or PA speakers. Because there are too many factors that affects the tone: pickups, tonewoods, amps, effects, eq, cabs and mic's. Those are distracting from the most important that is the composition itself. Too many factors. 2) how do you combine an amp's plugin with a cab from another...?
The simplest way would be to load up two plug ins. For example use the fortin nameless for its head and disable the cab. Then open say the Archetype Nolly and disable everything but the cab section. This method works fine for me.
There is definitely big difference with different IR-s but buying EQ curves sound absurd to me. Not only you're not getting the real thing, it maybe close enough but if you're gonna fiddle with it after, its totally not worth. I'm thinking, find one amp that you like, find a cab that you like, learn how it sounds and go from there, you don't need billion of IR-s.
I'm all about guitar sims/ir's nowasdays...however..with the current ir capturing architecture we will never actually mimic a real speaker cabinet. Things like cone speed ...cone mass...voice coil size...cone extension...and cabinet size and type...all play major parts in the guitars actual feel and response to any variable of keys or chords being played thru them....at least for now..there is no way to capture all the nuances that make our cabinets what they are...most all the feeling and insiparation a cabinet brings out is gone....in a cover band or mabey in a studio, I could use a cab sim...but if I were doing an original band/artist thing...it would have to real cabinets ...hands down... With the mixture of auto tracing /ducking filters it would be possible to mimick a real cabinet..but that is next generation technology barely even being thought about yet...and would require more processing power and a new rendering platform to used...not cheap or easy for creators or users....take anotger toke...crank your system to the egde of distortion , close your eyes and dream on...
I guess if I was in a band like Russian Circles or something then yes I agree I would work with a single cab and head and have a single sound. Short of being in a commercially successful band though I much, much prefer the vast options that modelling with IRs give you. And yes the people guzzling beer at whatever bar I am playing at will not be able to notice the nuance difference between an IR and a 4 x 12 Mesa cab.
And remember: The guitar that sounds good by itself might not be the one that goes best in the mix.

Basically, when anyone criticizes a digital amp for sounding too "fake" or "fizzy", the IRs are the problem, not the amp model.

That impulse at the start looked very fine!, almost flat curve. Any links to that?
Valhallir makes the most realistic sounding impulses, everything else sounds digital to me.
