Michael Hirst has profoundly connected the past to the present through these characters. Their struggles and epiphanies are timeless. A spiritually poignant portrayal of the human journey. I’m 64 yrs of age and exclusively a documentary fan, but this saga is epic bar none!!! I’ve watched the entire series about 7 times. And truly, all round, excellent acting!!! No good stories to be had anymore..shallow fly by night, predictable formula crap out there..might as well bring on computer intelligence/AI to write scripts. Hirst really brings out the best authentic characters! Much gratitude!!
Insightful and intelligent writing, also well researched. As someone with an ancestry from Norway I've always been interested in the Viking way of life so I've done a lot of reading about them and about that part of the world. I think he's done them justice which makes this a very unique show. I'm really glad that he's keeping true to what is known about Ragnar Lothbok and the times and climate in which he lived. It's not easy to weave a believable fictional story around someone when there's so little information, for a long time it was thought that the Viking Chronicles were myth and legend but there's always truth in what is written, obviously it depends on whose doing the writing, so this interpretation feels truer from the Viking angle. This show is completely riveting and I think it'll be one that I'll want to watch more than once. Great interview.
Watched vikings just this past year and love it. I have 6 episodes left to fully be done. Then I watched the tudors for the first time just a couple months ago and finished that after a binge and really liked it too. Watched the Elizabeth movie for the first time a few weeks ago. Maybe because it's dated but I didn't care for it too much.
Fascinating writer. Friendly tip: If the interviewer would try to cultivate the listening skill more and talk less, he and we would find the who experience more edifying.
Why is it that in issue 1 (free issue) of vikings, when ragnor and rollos father dies, ragnor sees odin and the valkyries take his father to valhalla but rollo sees nothing. You say they see what they believe, is this some hidden egg that basically says "you experience what you believe". which means that while the gods are true, are they false as well? I was willing to believe "all forms of gods, buddhist, viking, vedic are all real" solely for this show, but now, are their gods even real? or is it some brain effect....
Considering he's an academic, I don't get why the series is so historically inaccurate. I can appreciate making tradeoffs for entertainment value, but it seems to me that in this case you shouldn't have to make that sacrifice.

Because you have to make it relevant for today's society, as well as dramatise it, otherwise your audience will lose interest.
therefore Applestan was fictional as fuck.
18:07 to 18:38 totally agree with that 👍🏻 and I don’t like fantasies too.
