Well deserved honor for a fine actor giving a brilliant portrayal. In fact, the series' entire ensemble gave terrific performances which merit recognition. Among these: Sian Phillips as Livia, Brian Blessed as Augustus, George Baker as Tiberius, John Hurt as Caligula. Also the many supporting players all contributed their best to an excellent series.
That was a great speech...so humble. It was cute at the end after they played the clip of him in Claudius, he was bashful & bowed his head. What a sweetie! :)
This is wonderful! He looks so cute. I like his shirt, I have a similar one. ;) And his voice, when he speaks... I'm melting. Thank you so much for posting this! :)
To judge from the last seconds of this video, Derek seems to be a very humble and sweet person. Watch his reaction when the camera hits him again - total confusion!
The "night of the stammerers" quip was a reference to the fact that Brad Dourif had won the BAFTA for best supporting (film) actor for the stammerer Billy in Over Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
At any stage in history could anyone have thought that those ruffles spilling out of his tuxedo collar and cuffs were a good look? Surely the 70s were the decade that Time forgot.
I'm Italian, but glad to know you're not a bunch of rubes ^^ ...these days I feel like we are a bunch of idiots, here in Italy and Europe...but that's all another story :))
Back when awards shows were a joy to watch. Today, it's all about the most obnoxious virtue signaling, activism for profoundly sickening and out of touch causes, or a forum for rewarding failures who tick the right ideological check list
what an omen... "666 views". All my idols are so old, like 40-50 years older than me.. In a way that really sucks, but in another that's what makes them my idols, isn't it. Bittersweet.
I think it's Annette Crosbie. If you watch the series Edward VII here on UA-cam she is excellent as Queen Victoria. (I think she won the BAFTA for that herself?) There was also a movie musical version of Cinderella written by the Sherman Brothers (who did the music for Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) called "The Slipper and The Rose" starring Richard Chamberlain in which she was fabulous as the Fairy Godmother. She also had a small part in Calendar Girls many years later. She always has the most crisp, clean diction.
One of the most well-deserved awards ever given for any acting performance.
His acceptance speech is of a truly noble and civilised quality; with a modest, natural eloquence that is magnificent.

Wonderful and talented actor and lovely guy. I had a HUGE crush on him after seeing I, Claudius.
Jessie Lansdel Who didn't? I had a crush and still have...even if I saw the series 30 years later! ;)

The way he is reliving the performance at the very end, says a lot. What a great actor, and what an achievement of artistic idea, for as all to enjoy!
A stunning series crammed with brilliant performances, none exceeding Derek Jacobi's mesmerising portrayal of the eponymous character.
Sooooo Sweet! His expression at the end was so endearing!!!! What a great man and extremely good looking now and then! Thanks for posting Rosa!
To stand out so brilliantly in such a fantastic cast makes his performance exceptional and to this day I have yet to see anything comparable.
Derek Jacobi is simply the greatest actor ever-and a brilliant person at making speeches.
An insightful watch! I could listen to Jacobi talk all day anyway, thanks for this, much appreciated!
His commotion at the end, after they showed the clip of the series, was wonderful. Marvelous person!
This is the most well polished, humble, lovely acceptance speech. He's soooo cute!
From a time when everyone still was not crazy, today, some decades later all there have probably gone insane
This is wonderful! He looks so cute. I like his shirt, I have a similar one. ;) And his voice, when he speaks... I'm melting.
Thank you so much for posting this! :)
very humble and a class act
He's adorable...shy and humble...
what a lovely voice he has!
He' s so humble and gorgeous!
Back when awards ceremonies were worth watching
Thanks for posting.
The reference to stammerers is about Brad Dourif, who win the best supporting actor BAFTA for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
He was brilliant as Claudius.
25 years later, he won the Emmy award for Outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for playing Jackson Hedley in Frasier.
@ravaldo11 I agree completely. What a class act! I loved I Claudius, and Sir Derek has been one of my favorites ever since.
What a speech!
Very well said!
Briliant!
Oh my GOD......that's Princess Anne giving out the award!! :-O
Before the BAFTAs went all Hollywood.
You're welcome! Thanks for your kind comments!
He's really cute and his voice's always a thrill to me...and he's clever too...I love clever men!
What a nice boy

Classiest acceptance speech I've ever heard
The "night of the stammerers" quip was a reference to the fact that Brad Dourif had won the BAFTA for best supporting (film) actor for the stammerer Billy in Over Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
@peasblossom1973
No it's Annette Crosbie. You remember her, she played Victor Meldrew's wife.
@Escul1960
That, and Robert Donat's Academy Award for "Goodbye Mr. Chips."
DJ was also the best Hamlet ever.
Love that 1970's tuxedo! At least it doesn't have bell bottoms.
He could read a grocery list and make it sound like a sonnet.
Wow, the makeup people should have got an award as well - I wouldn't have recognized him as Claudius
Brilliant speech especially "night of the stammerers."
Actually, "I Claudius" was a twelve part series.
What a ham!
At any stage in history could anyone have thought that those ruffles spilling out of his tuxedo collar and cuffs were a good look?

Well, I guess we all do. ;)
Sorry Derek. I've had a few.
Not a bad “performance” from Annette Crosbie! 😉

who was the presenter?

@anonUK I know that he's gay, but that doesn't change a bit my respect and admiration.
When I was 12/13 my idol were Cary Grant & Sean Connery, so, don't worry, it's a common desease ^^
Nowadays, gay people would thank their husbands.
@rosapurpurea
It's a pity for you he's of the homosexual fraternity.
