  • Video of the former Canadian Northern Railway/CN-Kinghorn (Dorion) Subdivision (MP 69.1-71.8) at Beardmore, ON. Features the grade as it cuts through the town with culverts and crossings and remains of the siding, water tank, permanent slow order signs and station grounds. There is also information on the origins of the name of Beardmore.

    Super good documentary. My cabin is at Polly Lake, i think Cronyn is directly in line across the lake from me. There was a CN bunk house, horse stable and a field at one time back there. The concrete foundation for the building is still there like 75 ft or so off the Railbed. One time at Wanagou lake, I was on my Skidoo and the train was coming round the bend and the conductor waved his fist at me, maybe thinking I was going to jump the tracks. Miss those days of the sound of the old EMD Jeep 40's pulling a load back there.

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I've documented the entire line like this (there are a few sections I need to redo).
      Appreciate the info about Cronyn/MacAskill. I was through that area several times, but I was not aware of the concrete foundation. I have a CN property map that shows the line and all the buildings but nothing like that is shown at there. I'll have to go back at some point and have a look.

      @@padwrr My dad is 91 and can remember a lot from the 50's. im going to show him this video and see about the cn bunkhouse, because he had a story about it. And i will either post it here or email ya.

    I think that building with chain link fencing has to do with the fibre runs in the RoW. Behind the fence, those units look to be some sort of AC.
    Beardmore and tanneries. Back in my twenties I worked at a leather outfit making equipment cases and equipment holsters. One of our suppliers was in downtown Toronto at roughly Front and Cherry, Dominion Tannery, ultimately if memory is correct owned by Beardmore.
    They still had the original earth tanning pits in the basement, dating back, so I was told, to the 1840-50's, though I don't know if they were in use. Unlikely but you never know. All gone now, replaced with housing for the 2015 Pan-Am Games.
    "It's worth the drive to Acton". Heard that many times on commercials back in the day, for leather coats.

      I think you maybe right about the building. There is one that is exactly the same in Red Rock and I always wondered what the purpose of it was.

    So you said there were water towers every 20 miles. Did the railroad have their own well driller for the towers or did they contract out for wells. Good video, Thanks.

      You got me with that question as I unfortunately have no idea who put in the water towers. If I had to guess, Canadian Northern had their own outfit to put in the wells. This section of their line was 550 miles long, so some quick math says they needed 25+ water tanks along the way. That would keep some people busy for quite a while.
