Although I live in Bavaria, Meersburg is one of my favourite places, the architecture against the backdrop of the lake is just fantastic and the castle is out of this world. ... especially for lovers of poetry, as it was here the 19th century poet Anette von Droste-Hülshoff wrote her wonderful poems and novellas.
The 2 castle like buildings on top of Meersburg which you can see in several of your shots is actually the boy school I went to 40 years ago . So nice to see it and remember it again . Thank you so much.

Asked whether he wants to enjoy the scenery he replies, that he will look at it at home. (Actually saw something like that with Japanese in Yellowstone park). Meersburg is wonderful. Have you visited the famous island of Mainau - known as the FLOWER ISLAND? If you come to Lake Constance again, you should definitely plan a trip on the Hohentwiel - a historic paddle steamer. And another historic ship is the MS Oesterreich. There are also special trips where you take a route with the Hohentwiel and the way back with the MS Oesterreich. Oh - and don’t forget to visit PFÄNDER mountain in Bregenz (Austria) - best view over Lake Constance and about 240 alpine peaks. Don’t worry - there is a cable car up there. 😉
Bodensee is great for families with children. We went there like 15 years in a row (several places though,). I recommend visiting the isle of Lindau, the water side of Friedrichshafen, the Zeppelin-museum of Friedrichshafen, maybe take a flight there (with the zeppelin). Don't forget visiting Konstanz (the name giver of lake constance), take a trip with the fast boats (Fridolin or Constance) from Friedrichshafen to Konstanz or back. Take the ferry from Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn (in the evening) to see the sun settle in the ocean/ äh, lake, have dinner at the harbor of Konstanz in the evening. If you have a baby sitter it may be fun to go the the Bregenzer Festspiele (opera on the sea) in the autumn. This list is not complete, I am just getting tired. And I am not working for the tourist office :-)
What GREAT ideas! We lamented that we only had an afternoon to spend in Meersburg and plan to make another trip back to the Bodensee in the near future. And love, love, love the idea of the Festspiele. I will definitely add it to the list! Thank you!
@@TypeAshton There are dinner Tours with a Solar Boat at the Untersee in Radolfzell (nice old Town with a Water Playground on the Lake) If you love very old romanic Churches and Monasteries - Isle Reichenau is a must see! Also the Peninsula "Höri" where Hermann Hesse and Otto Dix in the Nazi Aera lived (you can visit there Homes) it´s so beautiful there - not so touristy. Follow the Street you are in CH with small Towns like Stein am Rhein and Schalffhausen with the Rheinfall biggest Waterfall in EU (take the travel strawler and it gets little bit wet) In a 4-week vacation you will not get bored in this region!

Great. Castles, visited 3 or 4 during my time. One in particular (can’t remember name / location) stands out. It was really well maintained and good tour. You came through some trees and there it was perched atop a high rock shaft on all sides and you had to cross a wood walkway over a considerable drop to reach. Me being me my imagination went wild thinking about all the people and happenings where I stood. Tour was great, had to remove footwear and put on these big thick felt “slippers” to do the tour. Remember noticing that suits of armour seemed small but guide said they were authentic but few centuries ago people were generally smaller. Your shot of the old WC gave me a chuckle. This castle had numerous ones all located at outer wall. If you lifted lid just air with remains deposited along face of cliff - must have been something at height of summer.
In my opinion, two castles abolutely to see are Burg Hohenzollern (of one of the most influential families in Europe), and my absolute favorite is Burg Eltz near to Koblenz!

Btw: you seem to be a rosé lover...did you had a Pinot Noir or a Dornfelder Rosé? I once was in Mersburg...at the age of 3 😂😊 And there is a (private) video me playing at/on the fountain @4:48 😀👍
Thanks for the great feedback! I am normally a Pinot Noir lover. A good, dry red wine is right up my alley. But in addition to the Rosé we also tried a Müller-Thurgau trocken on the terasse and it was very refreshing!
The oldest stone castle (built 220 years after Christ by the Romans) in Germany is in the north-west of Germany and not on Lake Constance! The best boat trip is to the only "offshore island" in Germany, namely "Helgoland"! The other islands are Wadden Sea islands which are located quite close to the coast of East Friesland or North Friesland and are ideal for beach holidays. So the north is calling!
I'm sure that would be such a great experience to go visit! I hope to plan a trip up North near Bremen soon. Is it in that area? In Meersburg, the City Tourism Office prefaces this particular castle as "oldest inhabited castle in Germany". But I am not sure if they mean continuously inhabited, last to continue to be inhabited or what. 🤷🏻♀️ Nonetheless, it really was such a fun tour. We really enjoyed it
let me recommend a cruise on the rhein river expecially from wiesbanden to koblenz, dozens of castles and wonderful neat villages. i myself come from Rüdesheim, which is the start of the so called Mittelrheintal, you find the the best grapes there: riesling fr white wine and burgunder red wine. by the way: th name rhein comess from the greek word rhea, which means river (panta rhe = everything flows) so the name of the river is ..... "river" and if you visit the monastery eberbach, which is the oldest wine producer in germany, you may find it interesting that part of "the name of the rose" was filmed here. and the people there are a mixture of every ancient culture, from east and west, from north to south. don´t be surprised when you see men who look rather italian.. they left a lot of genes there
Meersburg is fine, but imho Überlingen is still superior. It is not as 'touristy', has fine architecture and views - and an interesting history as well.
The most beautiful town in Germany? No. It is just ONE of the numerous remarkable towns in Germany! They are all very beautiful! Each one with it's own history, each one with it's own style, but most of them severly hundreds of years old. I read that you're going to the north near Bremen. It will be VERY different compared to the south, but take a look of the castles up there, the large and very old farming houses, the flat coutry inviting to visit by cycle ! Visit the Eifel, the Westerwald, the Neckertal, the Frankenland, the Rheinland, Westfalen, all the beautiful parts of Thüringen, Sachsen, the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and so on... Greetings from a German living in France!
Well said! Every new city we are in we tell each other the same thing, "this place is so beautiful!" They all are, but just different enough from the other to make them great destinations to explore.
Our hearts break for the communities affected by the flood. Here in Baden-Württemberg we haven't experienced that kind of flash flooding, but our city has been sending resources to help the recovery efforts. You're living in Freiburg and call Meersburg "the most beautiful town in Germany"?! Sacrilege! :D No, just kidding, Meersburg is a wonderful city. Just totally unaccessible for wheelchair users if you don't have someone like Jonathan to carry you up the stairs ;) I can also recommend visiting Überlingen, there's an amazin restaurant at the top of a hill. A little bit pricy, but totally worth it, with a view over the lake and very delicious food and wines!
a lot of places are different in different languages. even the name "deutschkand" is only used in german speaking couintries, other nations call us germans francs, tedesci nemeci...almans.. even münchen is "monaco" in italian, which already has lead prople to the german town in bavaria instead of the small mediterranean state. of monaco

You should not take the stairs, once your boy is bigger. There is a spielplatz there and you will get stuck there (I always did with my girls)

We definitely have Überlingen on our places to visit. We got a sneak peak of the city on the dinner cruise and cant wait to go back. ❤️❤️

Why does the map say Lake Constance? It's known as Bodensøen in Denmark, and Bodensee in German.
