    Segal is already a big man and add Akido to that then he's more than a force to reckon with. I wouldn't want to piss him off!!

    Ok. Not only is seagal a 7th dan in aikido (that takes dedication), not only is he a respected martial artist (except with immature "im hard" teenagers and angry nerds who like to pretend theyre tough), not only are his films fairly enjoyable but he also has dedicated his ENTIRE life to martial arts and that deserves respect in its own right. A life dedicated to anything is admirable. Maybe if he was in his twentys now he would do some mmo fights, maybe not. He is 60 now, show some damn respect!

      We're now 11 years and a lot of sexual misconduct allegations, and a money laundering scheme later - do you still feel that Seagal doesn't deserve to be insulted? 😂 he's accomplished a lot on the basis of pure bullshit, and I can't help but admire that... but respect? Nooo no no....

    I've always wanted to study Aikido but I don't live close enough to the one studio that exists in my state. Has anyone ever booked Seagal at their own studio/dojo? Decades later Steven easily exemplifies his Art with precision and a humble demeanor.

    of course, I am not talking about masters here, just your average practitioners. And here's problem with Aikido, regardless how much I love and appreciate it - you need to be a real master, to be able to apply it successfully, in a real fight. But trust me, there are guys who can MAKE it work.

    Go take an Aikido class for a couple of months then come back and say he was cooperating. The fact is that when someone has you in a stress position you have no choice but to "cooperate", it's your body's natural response to avoid serious injury.

  • @unikad

    Now I already know how his irimi nage works - using only a hand. It's about perfect timing first, appropriate distance second and a top-down-crossways cut like through his neck which flings his head back third. If you tot this all up as a one movement, it perfectly works.
    A proper cut and its direction is very important because you use the reverse side of your elbow to fling the head back.

    @unikad In Seagal's technique it appears that he uses only his hand but he is indeed using his hip, sort of. The angle with which he enters uke's skikaku is so small and precise that it looks like a hand smack, but watch his footwork closely and you'll notice that he enters diagonally and extends his arm (and thus his energy) outward and slightly behind uke, taking his center. Direct or not, the basic irimi principles are still present in his technique. He just did it thousands of times!

  • @RealCoachRonn

    Aikido is to disarm, subdue and disable an attacker...period. It's effective in any fight: you don't have to strike first with Aikido as your skill. It's a counter strike art form for disabling an attacker

    We also use the hip, but we use the diagonal behind the back, and i can't say that its a soft form, because it's uncomfortable to fall. Better ask your sensei about the straight irimi nage, i'm sure he will explain you.

    there are some people said that this art didnt work against pro fighter like ufc or else
    i admit it, its real though,
    BUT, dont forget that this style is created for self defense, not for fighting, especially aikido created for disarming the ATTACKER and not for hurt them too, when in the ring the fighter must beat his OPPONENT to the pulp, so he can win,
    in the street, when you being attacked, you must disarm them and get away, there are no time for prepare just like in the ring

    @unikad if you try to channel your uki closer to your shoulder you can bring the arm up AS IF you were going to make it a hard strike but then soften it on contact (almost cradling the uki's head) and then continue to follow thru with your footwork and shoulder rotation. If you work on doing it that way you give yourself the choice of doing it hard or soft based on the situation...but the footwork and general body rotation stay the same either way.

    also, few ring/cage MMA fighters, have ability and knowledge how to survive a fight, where there are no judges to step in, three guys attack you at once, your groin area, throat, eyes, back of your head and neck are your opponents primary targets, etc. Many of them were to some rude awakening, when faced with styles which take that into account from get go. I remember sparing with BJJ guy on the ground, and taking him apart time after time, with dirty tricks - all he had to say was "foul" :)

    Then you know there are locks you can't get out of easily. I was talking about the 'lock' in this video: the way Seagal applied pressure to the wrist. And if your a martial artist, you should know that Aikido works OR stfu untill you've given it a shot in real life.

  • @serdar213

    @unikad Because of the speed and need of usage.If you enter enough inside your uke or opponent ,you dont need to use your torso again.Redundant use of torso causes wasting time.

  • @pepsyman1
    @pepsyman1 14 років тому

    @unikad, I will give you a little different insight from what other have already written. The Irimi-nage that Seagal does (some schools classify it as a kokyu-nage) starts long before what you see his arm do. As the attack approaches his initial step channels the attacker toward his closest shoulder as his hip and shoulder rotate thru. His personal style is to catch the uki with the crook of his elbow (his size lets him catch it further from his body) most of us use the inside of the shoulder

  • @Lordkeggles
    @Lordkeggles 11 років тому

    A fight is a physical challenge between two or more individuals! Where the you beat one into unconsciousness or hurt them to a point of tapping out, it's still a fight. Aikido is a very intelligent way to defend yourself. If a MMA fighter throws any part of his body towards aikido, he will be stopped and submitted.

  • @distortedbsd

    You are right. If u are afraid u cant do aikido. It will not work. That is complete thrue. Aikido suggest that when attacker is striking u go directly in to attack not to run away. And u need courage to do that. But if you have that courage then this shit works and works fucking good.

  • @TheSubwaysurfer
    @TheSubwaysurfer 11 років тому

    People always argue that this doesn't work against "trained professionals" which is a code word for MMA fighters. What people need to understand is context. The Budo arts aren't ring sports, they're used for personal defense, and FEW so called street thugs are going to have the training and knowledge of an MMA fighter.

  • @TyHatfield

  • @TheSubwaysurfer
    @TheSubwaysurfer 11 років тому

    Akido,Aikijitsu, and other Budo arts were and are used in fights to the death on urban battlefields not in the comfort of a padded ring with lights and spectators. I'm not arguing against the effectiveness of ring arts, they're very effective, but come on people, these arts that Seagal is teaching were used by real warriors in life encounters. What didn't work, they threw away, or modifies. You appreciate arts like this when you get older.

    there is a world of difference between showing or knowing an impressive technique on a (cooperating) trainingspartner in your dojo in calm relaxed situation than applying it in a real life high adrenaline situation against an uncooperating
    fighter.!!

    Hi, I´d like to ask some of you who practise aikido, if you know how Mr. Seagal does the direct form of Irimi nage. He uses only his hand to knock an uke down. Could anybody explain the princip to me of Mr. Seagal´s Irimi nage? In aikido I practise, we use the entire body (mainly the hip) to knock an uke down (a little soft form). Thank you very much

    Steven Seagal really should consider settling down and becoming a sensei again. He was the first non-Japanese instructor in Japan, before he became an actor. He's admittedly not a very good actor so much as a martial artist, and he's getting kind of old to be doing his current stuff. I just think that it would make sense for him to have returned to the dojo permanently. He's a nice guy, too, I just think he's trying to not look "old and fat" in the eyes of the media.

  • @salsalover69laters
    @salsalover69laters 12 років тому

    Actually she could if she new the technique really well which is unlikely at 9yo. He's not saying she could beat bas rutten in a UFC match. He's saying that strength is not needed in aikido for defense, because it works against the attackers strength... There are many japanese women who are very small that can defend easily against a 6ft guy, but they have done a lot of training to get their technique down. He's not saying that a 9yo girl could just stand there while bas punches her...

  • @salsalover69laters
    @salsalover69laters 12 років тому

    Aikido wrist locks have all been taken from jujutsu... wrist locks were invented because samurais wore armour, and the only option for defense was to use wrist locks. Punches and kicks don't work well on armour! So wrist locks aren't fake at all... there are more wrist locks available in jututsu, but many of them are designed to cause damage to someones wrist, and were therefore left out of aikido. Aikido wrist locks can hurt and are good for control, but don't cause damage (usually)...

I keep training irimi nage perhaps all the time to get the right practice but it´s a bit hard because Sensei Seagal´s irimi nage is, IMHO, based on a hard strike as well as on timing. Which is a problem for me because if I want to strike that hard, my uke wil not like it ´cause we practise a bit soft form of aikido:(

But a good instructor will show you it works and then show you how to do it yourself. As long as your respectful its his job to show you... But usually you get to swap around between beginners to black belts, so a beginner might not be able to do it to you, but a black belt will... not even the instructor
