I am a Deputy Sheriff and when I was going through Jail School's defensive tactics our instructer encouraged us to learn Jujistu(sp) for the ground fighting but said and I quote " if you get a chance to learn Aikido, do it." Aikido is a great style to learn for controling your opponent and facing mulitiple foes.
Seagal was definitely one of the best in Aikido. I know a lot of people would say he'd get owned in mma and I don't disagree to that, but when it comes to Aikido, Seagal was head and shoulders above a lot of instructors.
I agree, I really hate it when people argue which is the ultimate martial art in the world. Each style has their own speciality, talking badly about other styles only reflects poorly on yourself.
so honed and in tune with whats going on around you that eventually nobody will be able to touch you which is the ultimate goal. That way you can move where nobody is and down each person one at a time. But to do that require practice and this is what this demo is, a practice!
Are you kidding? Steven Seagal was one of the first "Anglos" to be accredited to teach Aikido over in Japan. He teaches nothing but practicality & "real" Aikido. His speed & skill is one to be respected & feared. I would confidently match him up against any master martial artist. Those UFC fighters would be the first rung...
seagal will always be one of the best, don't think of him as an old man, there's no age for aikido... in fact the older the better for this fascinating discipline.... besides, seagal is an actor who's just playing a character to keep in fashion.... as an aikidoer he's got all our respect.
actually ive been studying aikido for about 2 years now and im only 8 kyu and i have been in several situations since i started to study with 3 people going at me full attack and this has probbaly saved my life if not prevented a serious beating. this martial art is now "b.s." and does work in real life situations you just need to open your mind to it but i wouldn't expect people to believe this from one video it took me awhile to start to believe this would work to.
All Aikido demos are like this. I've seen a 90 yr old woman do the same thing. The most skill is in the attackers, who at least must take the falls. I trained in it for years...
Some of you are questioning the use of the kotegashi wrist lock. I suppose cause the uke didn't want to get hurt he rolled safely. I used kotegashi in a fight at the end of a long night at night club years ago. The guy didn't roll over like an uke, I broke his wrist and still threw him. Not proud of it but the technique works in the proper trained hands. Best of luck in your training.
Aikido and Jiu Jitsu are the 2 most used/taught martial arts in the Military. The majority of hand to hand taught in Infantry school at Ft. Benning are a derivation of Aikido. The gracie family run several training programs in the army (most notably for the Rangers). It's useful, effective, and anyone can learn it. A firearm isn't always an option, whether in combat, or for self defense. True, it is preferred, but hand-to-hand is your contingency should your firearm fail.
I guess you never watched any of his movies. Definitely one of the most effective fighting styles out there. It great to watch it used against MMA fighters! Its almost to easy!
You're right. They don't determine the best but you do have to showcase levels of mastery which is done through certain tests and then when you pass those, you are allowed to work with swords. With these swords(tanken) utilizing the Tomiki style there can be a sort of competition but not similar to Karate or Taekwondo.
@solpapisolmook I agree... Real fighting involves two opposing sides. The opposition can't fight you when their wrist has been broken... Hence, doesn't resemble real fighting... Just kicking butt!... This is a perfect Art for self defence.
We did randori this week in class. And my sensei called me up and some other guys and I couldnt even get a hand on him. I hit the floor about 6 times. It was my first randori.
Also getting choked out by Gene Lebell isn't anything to be ashamed of, after all Seagal allowed him to apply the choke first. It was vain of him to think he could get out of it for sure, Lebell is a badass at choking.
I don't know if he was drunk. Never heard that in any of the versions of the story. But the guy who was involved in the alleged fight was the legendary "Judo" Gene LeBell. Gene was/is one of the toughest guys around. He did MMA style fights 30 years before the UFC was created.
Sincere training will help you become the best that you can be. That should be the goal, right? MMA takes very sincere training and dedication, as does Aikido or other styles. A person who is prepared for death, not injury and a tap-out is a true "martial arts practioner" Most just go to class, perform techniques, get pretty good and go on with life. Many walk different paths. Is is best to walk some path or just stand still. MMA and Aikido can both be very practical in situations
I have seen 74 years old 5'6", 100lb Wu-Dann (WuDan...however written I dunno) Kung-Fu "so called MASTER" to easily overpower my friend's uncle - 35 years old 6'2, 220lb. That uncle is master in ju jitsu and kickboxing. I would never believe that if I haven't seen it myself. Uncle tried a lot of times but always lost ... that old one was really amazing. At the end, the Kung-Fu master raised his hand in horizontal position and that 220lb uncle grabbed it and did about 10 chins (pull ups)...
I agree K_C. The "Why" is being forgotton. O Sensei taught the why, the how, and the when. Rock & water are both very powerful entities. Each in it's own, can subdue each other, yet they both can exist harmoniously. Sorry for sounding so "Kwai Chang Cain-ish"
im only gunna say this one untill you have studied this martial art i have not then you should not even say if it is real steven seagal is one of the best aikido masters of all time
why do people think that mma techniques can't be used in a self-defence scenario? mma involves boxing, jiu jitsu, muay thai, kick boxing, wrestling, and probably a whole host of others, like karate etc. there is no reason why an mma fighter could not use different aspects of his fight techniques in a self-defence situation. surely the main difference between mma and martial arts is the philosophy - one is about self control, self defence and growth, the other, just about fighting.
Though it it pretty nice, these guys have been practising falling down. When you know what the guy is going to go, you will fly on the ground, for sure.
Seagal can fight but this demonstration is ridiculous and doesn't simulate what would happen in a real street fight. Even an experienced fighter will usually be overwhelmed by more than one opponent by virtue of being outnumbered. A couple of hard nosed street guys that gang up on someone will bumrush the individual, grab him, and pull the individual to the ground to pound him out. This is simply what happens in most street fights.
@allosavros21 Aikido is an excellent martial art for one to use to defend against infants and the elderly. Especially if they attack you in slow motion and exactly how you want as they do in training...
An Aikidoka who knows what he is doing isnt going to let a street fighter gracefully fall to the ground. Firstly he will smash his neck so he cant breathe, dislocate his shoulder and crack his head on the ground and thats all in one move. Now does that turn you on? Or would you prefer a nice gentle landing so nobody gets hurt? Your choice.
I though it was too before I learned it. It's really not. I've done (in order) TKD, Ninjutsu, Shao Lin, Kickboxing, Muai thai, then Aikido. Aikido is the ONLY one that worked in a real life situation. Goit!!!!!!!!!
I think when he was a young man seagal would have been a handful for any man to fight. You dont become a 7th dan black belt and teach akido in japan if you are a wanker. What a lot of people dont think about now, is seagal is an old man., but his movies are still popular. You know what you are getting when you watch a seagal movie, action and entertainment that's all and thats why the guy is an icon. ..
I have to agree with you. History has shown that superpowers last only about 200 years. Our time is up and its coming to a close. It has also been proved taht Republics can only last so long before it finally implodes on itself. America is by far the most arrogant country but even in its weakened state, it is still the most powerful until someone finally brings the fight to us. That is when I plan to head to Japan.
Shhhhh....Let em think it works. I'm glad that people choose to do aikido rather than MMA. It just means there are fewer people walking around that pose a legit threat to the rest of us!
@sasat1986 While I agree with you to some extent, I do think that martial artists can gain a lot from a bit of cross training at a decent mma club. It's like separating true martial arts from sports martial arts, there is an element of mma, something about having to use every shred of energy, courage and willpower you have into one moment, one fight, gives it value as personal growth and a new view on what it feels like to be in a fight. All of which can be applied to whichever art you train in.
I agree-If you dont know what your doing. Your going to break a bone or sprain something. Its funny lots of people think its fake..its not. "All" of thoses techniques hurt.
i agree with you martial arts were developed to make soldiers and and warriors better and what they did. which was to kill each other. the spiritual side is just a by product and some scholls don't even stress that because they are teaching combat not religion.
The Main Problem With Aikido Is That In UFC Opponent Rarely Attacks You While Running At You And Trying To Grab Your Chest. Rather, They Try To Use Fast Strikes With Hands While Keeping Their Body Away, And In Such Case These Techniques Prove Utterly Useless.
My response would be that you're confident, in shape, and know how to throw a good strike, which means you'll win a fight against most people walking the earth. But someone with decent grappling skills is eventually going to get the takedown and smother someone with this skill set. Defininitely not a personal attack on practitioners of any martial art. I'm not a wrestler or grappler myself, I think I'm being objective. Thanks for keeping the debate so civilized.
segal had to fight other dojos and the yakuza to keep his school open. he was the first westerner to open a dojo in japan. the other dojos didn't lile it too much and the yakuza tried to extort him and make him leave
@billysue2 Exactely. Gentile way in a fight to death means weaponless way. There is nothing gentile according to our understanding of the word. Bujutsu is the word which is used when weapons are used.
@bf2335 But IT IS the same that was taught in Japan earlier in history. Judo schools in the beginning (before they make it an Olympic sport) were doing the same techniques. So, Jujitsu is Jujitsu, the same thing, all over the world. And Aikido is jujitsu with emphasis on avoiding the conflict in the process of fighting. Possible or not, I don't know.
Aikido would be ideal in a zombie apocalypse, thats about the only time people would come at you with both there arms and hands raised and out like that. Take boxing or mt instead kids.
I can't help but wonder if this type of martial art is so good, why isn't an Aikido master at the top of those ultimate fighting competitions? Usually it is Jujitsu that wins in those bouts.
and thats exactly the point... not saying that self development isn´t possible with other arts... Maybe the essence of aikido isn´t even possible to attain. Maybe it´s an Ism just like different politacle ideals, but maybe, just maybe it´s an ideal to strive for?
@bf2335 well, jujitsu happens to be a Japanese term and it stands for "non armed combat", hence the Brazilian origin is impossible. Non armed combat exists in every culture of the world. What does that mean sorry? How did your Sensei reassure you? As in, does aikido work on the street against a trained boxing. And does someone have to rush towards you for Aikido to work? Can't it work in a square off on the steet?
Well it wasn't met for fighting other martial artist who know the same principles as you do, it was met for self defense against non martial artist. Most people dont know how to fight and dont take the time to do what we do. Awesome, thanks!
I just checked ebay for it and am now going to purchase it.
It looks great....

steven seagal is the bigest and best aikido master....
Best video from steven seagal
Best randori. This is real fight!

wowww ....thank you that's the rality of Aikido ...amazing:O
Some martial arts, like Aikido and Wing Tsun, include multiple opponent combat, you learn how you position yourself. I've tried it, it works.

Steven Segal is the first american to ever teach aikido in japan. He is a 7th degree blackbelt. He taught Aikido in LA before becoming an actor

He WAS a good fighter.
Haha, I love how they say you cant think while fighting - nowonder Seagal was so good!
I guess you never watched any of his movies. Definitely one of the most effective fighting styles out there. It great to watch it used against MMA fighters! Its almost to easy!
OUCH! That's a dead on assesment right there.

correction - he is 7th dan and he was one of the best.
Totally agree with you mate. I studied Aikido then moved to BJJ.
dude...it's called martial ART!
Now I'm gonna go all the way to Wal-Mart, just to buy this "Steven Seagal" energy drink.
I still want to dry that "Hulk Hogan" energy drink!
it's so awsome i gonna try Aikido :D
We did randori this week in class. And my sensei called me up and some other guys and I couldnt even get a hand on him. I hit the floor about 6 times. It was my first randori.
man, he may be lazy today, but he was real fast at those days... Impressive technique.
he is soo good :)
Yes, it is a documentary, search here for:
"The path beyong thought"

Ummm..Fight fire with fire. You started it, so, in a fit of weakness I dropped to your level...
*Smirk*
i bought a steven seagal energy drink from wal-mart yesterday =D
great post
It's Seagal his arms defy physics.
Those guys aren't tiny, he's huge. Aikido doesn't resist once they know where the counter is going. Resisting will get you injured.
steven seagal vs. chuch noris?
im only gunna say this one untill you have studied this martial art i have not then you should not even say if it is real steven seagal is one of the best aikido masters of all time

I agree, I train in a diffrent martial art and you have no choice but "jump" unless you want an injury.

I though it was too before I learned it. It's really not.

Anyone who trained Aikido seriously knows Seagal is not a complete fake, you can see it in his technique.
Four! Even better.
Thats right. You have a good point ;)
i don't care what other Fool people say about AIKIDO.... Because my Sensei already prove how dangerous the art of AIKIDO was.....

the point is that if you resist the attack, you'll get real injured, with at last 1 luxation. :)
thats why you always learn how to fall first.
No, it doesn't but try applying it with BJJ or Judo, and you have a very powerful grapple and throw game.
What's the source of this documentary?
Is this a DVD?

i agree
i studied aikido then moved on to something i could acutally use in a fight
Yet iv been in a shit load of fights and my years of doing Aikido has always helped...care to explain that?
surely more than you probably except
Go to a dojo and say that to the sensei. He will invite you for the training, then you come back here to repeat that. Let's see.
this looks fucking awesome O.O
Aikido would be ideal in a zombie apocalypse, thats about the only time people would come at you with both there arms and hands raised and out like that. Take boxing or mt instead kids.
I can't help but wonder if this type of martial art is so good, why isn't an Aikido master at the top of those ultimate fighting competitions? Usually it is Jujitsu that wins in those bouts.
Believe me, you have to "fall" in such a way... Just for the simple reason, that if you don't,the technique Mr.Seagal did, will break your wrist...
and thats exactly the point... not saying that self development isn´t possible with other arts... Maybe the essence of aikido isn´t even possible to attain. Maybe it´s an Ism just like different politacle ideals, but maybe, just maybe it´s an ideal to strive for?
I like how all the attackers sell spins and inside-out bumps. They give almost no resistance.
Fuckin lame-o.
@bf2335
well, jujitsu happens to be a Japanese term and it stands for "non armed combat", hence the Brazilian origin is impossible. Non armed combat exists in every culture of the world. It is correct though that the Gracie family from Brasil has developed one of the best schools of this type of combat and advertised it trough MMA (one-on-one fighting).
Who fights by running and falling to the floor without even attempting a strike...
The attacks are very real, I have practice with Seagal students, and at real level, the uke will attack straight and direct, and if you as nage can not see or feel it coming/premonitions, you'll get your face injury. This is to practice your mushin.I have experience when i wasn't focusing as nage as the result my nose were bleeding.Hope this will clarify
I can see how his techniques would work good with weapons.
watchers1988, you've been an martial for 40 years and according your profile you're 27. So it seems you're likely to mix up things! Seagal has a 6th dan in Aikido, and he's an actor. I strongly doubt that Mr. Seagal get his ass kicked by many people, but of course nobody is unbeatable. Being human doesn't make one a fake.
Looks more like a performance than martial arts to me.
hey !! akido is cool !
just like throwin some1 with a hand !!
damn !! its cool !!
They're not small, Seagal is just very tall with 1,95 m.
MMA is a brand, and a fighting art - not a martial art.
What does that mean sorry? How did your Sensei reassure you? As in, does aikido work on the street against a trained boxing. And does someone have to rush towards you for Aikido to work? Can't it work in a square off on the steet?

aikido = the art taking dives for your master
@sinhaserpente
I see where you're coming from.
From my observations, most of the MMA fighters are highly trained in a form of martial arts, so they're somewhat of the same... the MMA fighter has some additional training. It'd be interesting to see an MMA fighter match off against a traditional martial arts enthusiast, that's quite unusual, lol.
