- The Arrow looping coaster is a famous classic - it's the first steel coaster type to feature inversions - and variations of the model can be found throughout the world. In this video I'll show you how to build a typical loop/corkscrew combination Arrow coaster layout, share some pointers to keep in mind while building them, and give some tips on how to make custom track elements for them.

The documentary also explains a lot about Arrow's relationship with Vekoma, but generally, Vekoma loopers more or less look the same as Arrow loopers, so it's not a distinction I'd worry about much in the game. For instance, their crossties are slightly differently placed and many Vekomas now run Vekoma trains, but there's nothing you can do about this in the game anyway.

About Planet Coaster College: PCC is a series of video guides in which I cover many aspects of making realistic and creative parks in Planet Coaster. One of my goals with the series is to make a video explaining each of the coaster types avaliable and show you how to build them, but there will also be some videos about elements of theme parks and the game in general, such as buildings and scenery. Overall, the series is directed toward already seasoned players of the games, though I do sprinkle tips that may be useful for beginners too.
This design is cool. I can almost feel the awkward jostling of my body from side to side as the POV reaches the point where the coaster turns into the corkscrew.
Really excited for when you do Inverted coasters. Nemesis & Montu are probably two of my favourite rides out there and I can't wait to see what you do in the game with 'em :)

If you get it, be prepared to be blown away by the building features in the game. I've been messing around with a creative world (no money and stuff) and I swear I've spent +90% of my time putting trees down and building shops and atmosphere. There's so much you can do. I have a giant dragon that spits fire and roars when a coaster gets to a certain point. It's awesome. My only issue is that you can't have a cart return where the exit is in a different location from the entrance. Hopefully it's added later on. That said, it's been a blast playing it. Highly recommend it if you get $40 for the holidays.

We only have 1 roller coaster in my country and its one of these types. Single loop with a double cork screw and it has basically the exact same lay out as what Silvarret built in this video (Small drop at top of lift hill before drop, the weird banking rough banking before turns, the loop into a turn and then the cork screw)

I never knew the history of the company who created all these coasters, let alone one of my favorites of my home park; King's Island's Vortex.
I always heard stories about The Bat, but I never realized it was created by the same Co. and the first failed inverted coaster in history.

at my local theme park busch gardens williamsburg, we have the first and only arrow coaster with interlocking loops. its called the lochness monster. its actually a pretty well known ride
The 'Big One' in my home town of Blackpool, England was built by Arrow in 94. At the time it was the tallest and steepest coaster in the world. The first drop was brutal but great. It only ran for one or two seasons before they had to redesign that first drop. It made it smoother but also took some of the thrill out of it. Some time later, the giant turnaround was also replaced in a bid to make it smoother. It's had a few tweaks and refurbs over the years, getting smoother and slightly less thrilling as time goes on. It's currently having 45 meters of it's track replaced and parts of the old track are for sale to the public.
So interesting...I have never known much about coasters...thank you!

Silvarret, since you have direct communication w the Planet Coaster team, can you ask if they intend on improving supports for loops and inverted/flying coasters? They're terribly inaccurate at the moment. Love your videos btw!

This looks just like the python in the Efteling. I live in the Netherlands so I know the looks. Just the other way around and the first 2 sections look the same
True, the Python was built by a Dutch company but using Arrow technology!

Strangely enough, the corkscrews themselves are the smoothest part of an Arrow coaster, it's that transition getting into them that hurts however, due to already being banked as it enters.
This looks great! I think one of the most iconic parts is the supports. I don't know if anyone has mad arrow supports for planet coaster, but I used a CS pack is rct3 to build an arrow coaster.

Awesome job explaining the intricacies of building a coaster. Now I wanna redo my coasters. I have huge issues with them being too intense and high fear rating.
Boy! Does that bring back memories. 1979, the "Corkscrew" originally at Knott's Berry Farm (now at Silverwood). Remove the two loops, and there you are. (BTW - these looping-corkscrew coasters are commonly called "Loop-Screws".)
When you built your own loop with it going up before going into the loop reminds me of Anaconda at Kings Dominion, that one would have to be the worst Arrow, even though I had my head back through the loop and corkscrew it threw my head around in the seat, it was an awful experience and if Steel Phantom did that back when it was an Arrow and as fast as that thing went, I can imagine the head bashing really had to have hurt! Great video by the way!
Imo Viper is one of the greatest arrow coaster! It is soo rustic and unsmooth, but soo much fun.
Arrow's first looping coaster was the Double Loop at Geauga Lake Park in Ohio and it used two circular loops after each other. The bottom of the second loop went into the ground somewhat to keep up the speed. But after this they realized that a teardrop design was less stressful on the guests. It is so sad that nobody bough this coaster when the park was closed so this landmark coaster was scrapped.
Wasn’t Arrow’s first looper Corkscrew at Knott’s Berry Farm?
Probably the best example of a classic Arrow coaster that still retains it's charm is Kings Island's Vortex. Two loops, a half loop into a corkscrew and a full corkscrew with the helix at the end. Jarring as much as it physically can trying to induce a concussion. I believe there is a Planet Coaster recreation of it too.
Reminds me of The Great American Scream Machine @ Six Flags: Great Adventure. One of my all time favorite coasters.

Arrow always had beautiful, smooth, and perfectly circular corkscrews, though.
Nice Guide. I like to think about how a plane does acrobatics, like bank the wings then use the elevator/rudder and not use throttle control, when i build these classics. Not talking modern fighters that are built to be fly by wire and compensating with electronics, which is deliberate so it inherently unstable without so it can perform more agile moves.
Just want to add, you couldn't help yourself and I smiled seeing the extra details in the path leading to the coaster :)

Nice video! I wouldn't personally leave the transitions rough like that because not all arrows are THAT rough (Tennessee tornado, loch ness monster etc.) but this is personal preference.
With regards to making the transitions into the corkscrews, there's an easy trick you can use to build a corkscrew as smooth (if that's the right word) as the pre-fabricated ones but still be able to smooth them.
1. Simply build both halves of the in-game corkscrew as normal (ignore the terrible transition for now) and then build a straight piece of track after it.
2. Now delete either side of the corkscrew and then try and connect up the missing piece in whatever way you can (don't worry about making it smooth - the smooth tool will forgive you for your sins). You can use as many pieces as you want for this but I would say try and aim for 2-3 because then the supports look nice, any more or less than that and it'll look under or over supported. You may want to set the banking offset to -1 or -2m if it's appropriate for the type of coaster as this will help a lot.
3. Now smooth the shit out of the, probably weird looking, piece of track you just built and if you did it right, you should have a perfectly formed half corkscrew which you can now use the smooth tool on.
4. Rinse and repeat for the other half of the corkscrew if necessary.
Note(s): You may notice that over smoothing the part of the corkscrew with the transition may cause it to deform slightly but I personally have never had a problem with this because it looks smooth from both on-ride and off-ride perspectives but for you purists who want it to be the right shape only smooth it once or twice. Also NEVER smooth the corkscrew as a whole (i.e. not the 2 halves at once) otherwise you'll ruin it (this goes for basically all custom inversions btw esepcially heartline rolls and zero-g rolls). You can use this trick on other kinds of inversions if you're feeling adventurous but it won't work for loops.
The reason you were having trouble with the loop at the end is because you should start curving it more to the side on the first piece of the loop rather than the second (top) piece. In the end though it doesn't matter because the smooth tool will straighten out any kinks but it just makes it a bit easier imo. It's also a good idea to look at the loop from the top down when building the first part so you can see how far you need to curve it away from the entry. There's a really fantastic set of tutorials on building all kinds of custom inversions which you can find here:

they're old but the same sort of principle applies in most of them. Perhaps he'll update them at some point or someone else will re-do them.

I really like how the track looks for these and like to ride them IRL, even if they are painfully rough like Goudurix in Parc Astérix. Some Arrows and Vekomas feel like they were designed in Rollercoaster Tycoon
I'd pay $1000 to go to Disney with this guy and just listen to him talk about his wisdom and know-how of theme parks, rides and architecture.

Very Nice Tutorial. Probably Going to add an uncomfortable Arrow Coaster in my park. The only thing I'm having trouble with is actually planning the whole layout of the park. Will you be able to do a tutorial on how to plan a decent park?
I know this is an old video and no one will see this comment, but oh well. The entire time this coaster was being built, I couldn't help but think of Ninja, a roller coaster that used to be at six flags over Georgia. The thing I remember most about it was it being very rough, so I thought that maybe arrow manufactured it. Turn out I was wrong, and that it was Vekoma instead.
I love these tutorial videos. Really interesting. In game, I've been playing in challenge mode, and I usually only have a limited amount of cash and some specific area I want to fill, so I've been making these really weird, statistically-optimized coasters that are probably nothing like anything that exists in reality. They're often kind of terrible and follow no sort of ride logic. ;) I'm enjoying this series, though, and it kind of makes me want to go in and make something normal now.
Dear Silvarret, this series is wonderful. I take a great interest in historic coasters. Have you/do you have any interest in making precise recreations of coasters, for example, the original corkscrew design? Does the game allow for that? For me it seems like the American Arrow can't get enough speed to make the original Corkscrew work.

Hey sillveret!! I know this is an old video and you won't see this comment but Arrow had pre set loop sizes and never deviated till the end of their company. So if they had a really tall fast coaster with a loop they would have it go up hill for a while then loop. And if their is a double loop after the first loop they drop down a little further. Look at pictures of the arrow custom Loopers and you'll see
Viper does that at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
I think the Vortex at King's Island was the first coaster to have a *pretzel twist.* They didn't call them _batwings_ back then.

@@Canadas_Wonderland_Nerd Nice, introduced in 1980. It beat it by 7 seasons since Vortex, also by Arrow Dynamics was 1987. Took me a few tries to find a good POV to show this. The rcdb calls it a Kamikaze Curve.

It's inspired by Python, IRL it goes left from the station, not right and the end is a bit different. Cool easter egg though for Efteling-fans! ;)

At 11:32 you mention the block brakes being snd issue with timing, there is a simple cure to that withoht making the train loading at the station wait longer. At the end of the coaster, add a second block section. Back it my RTC2 days that was a little trick I picked up on. Adding that extra block stection at the end always ensures a free block ahead for a running coaster. On the Down side that does mean a lobger brake section at the end. But realistically speaking, coaster that run 3 trains do always have longer end brake sections.
I don't have Planet Coaster yet, but I plan to get it as soon as I get a machine that can run the game.
I rode the kind of coaster yesterday at Eworld at Daegu (called Hurricane)
I dunno if it's an Arrow or a ripoff, but everything was here.
Plus the park (and the rides) are on the side of a hill so the scenery was awesome
I love watching the way you design your theme parks. You're theming is gloriously insane! I'm in love with this game but I can't get it because I have a MAC. This is unrelated to your video but do you know if you Planet Coaster is planning to include observation towers, boats, or sky buckets in the future? I saw the riverboat in the beta but it's only scenery. I would love to see a sternwheeler or pirate ship that people could actually ride. Is there a way to contact Planet Coaster and give suggestions?
this is my 3rd favorite type of rollercoaster my first is the rmc hybrid and the 2nd is the hyper twister coaster.
The arrow hyper coaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the U.K. Is about 80 metres high I think. It's the uk's second tallest coaster.
It is still the tallest in the UK. Stealth is 62.

The coaster at the very start of the video is remarkably similar to Canada's Wonderland's Dragon Fire. 2 loops in quick succession, followed by 2 corkscrews.
the Demon at SFGAM is also the same elements, slightly different layout though

I'm really struggling to create smooth elements in PC. Could you do a tutorial next which shows how to build custom loops, corkscrews, barrel rolls etc that are smooth and have good in-game stats?

Arrow made the Steel Phantom @ Kennywood which is not far at all from my home. It was redesigned (not by arrow) in 2000 to the Phantom's Revenge because the inversions were painful... one of the things I noticed a lot with arrow coasters how rough those loops are!
the second loop is actually the same size on arrow loopers, its just slightly lower to the ground ;)
Great video I just want to correct one thing you said that arrow built the first steel roller coaster ever but they actually built the first steel roller coaster with tubular track

its the same layout and almost the same model
TVA Recordings Python was built by Vekoma, a different company. They shared the same track design. Vekoma originally tried to imitate what Arrow did, then tried to make more modern layout with the Aroow track, which resulted in rough rides. Vekoma don't use that track anymore and are a much better company and make glass smooth rides now.
"Horrible Transitions" Yep... As I recall sore ears from riding Arrow coasters from my childhood.

Metashrew somewhat and there are two others demon and Carolina cyclone that are very similar to this arrow coaster
thx for the video and the link to the documentary. just a question how big is MACK Rides in the coaster world? i just work near them (accross the street) and they own the Europa Park in Rust.
I ask because they are not mentioned in the documentary at all.

I have worked at Avonturenpark Hellendoorn for a couple of years and there's this Rollercoaster called "Tornado". Is that the Vekoma variant of the Arrow looping coaster? If so, I want one in my park. :D
If I remember evacuation training correctly its lift hill is 27 meters high and its top speed is 64 km/h.
