My favorite of Milhaud's arranged folk song / dance suites, and complete. Very happy... with gratitude and thanks.

It is inspired by a music of the French baroque composer Campra. Campra was from Provence and achieved his carreer as opera author in Paris. He told about the younger Rameau " This man will overcome all of us".

Milhaud's music is always great fun and very reminiscent of the French countryside. Van Gogh's painting is a good match for the piece.

Although Milhaud lived the first half of his life in France (emigrating to the US in 1940), he would become a major contributing influence on American music. Among Milhaud's famous students were Burt Bacharach, Dave Brubeck, Steve Reich and Morton Subotnick.

He didn't spend the second half of his life in the US, as he came back in France in 1947.

Also, Bill Evans considered the bitonality in this suite to be a huge influence on him.

Also, Milhaud and Kurt Weill became lifelong friends after meeting at Baden in 1927, when Weill's Mahagonny Songspiel was premiered. Unfortunately Mrs Weill and Mrs Milhaud hated each other.

@@MrBohuslav According to several sources (Wiki included), Milhaud alternated from 1947 to 1972 between Mills College in Oakland and the Paris Conservatoire.

@@rr7firefly In the mid-50's f attended Concordia, a Lutheran prep school near Mills College for Women. One day I was summoned by my music teacher to go to the chapel at Mills College because Professor DARIUS MILHAUD had asked the Mill's organist for an impromptu performance of a Bach piece for organ. I was asked to turn pages. The organist struggled mightily, and I heard much more dissonance than called for by the score!! Afterward, DARIUS MILHAUD graciously thanked us while shaking hands. I later sought out and enjoyed recordings of MILHAUD"S delightful compositions.

One of my favorite pieces by Milhaud having been introduced to it back in the 1960's. Brilliant development of the material. One of Milhaud's most listenable works. Thanks for this performance.

Darius Milhaud's Suite Provencale is also the theme song to my city, particularly the 4100 block of Dauphine Street, not too far from the Mississippi River, (and my grandfather's house) in New Orleans

Another great one was conducted by Milhaud himself in the late 1950s. Look for it in EMI's Composers in Person series.
